Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Roadbike Curious

2024-04-20 Thread Sally Bidleman
Hi Leah,

I have nothing technical to add, per usual; BUT I do have a "new"
30-year-old custom Erickson road bike I bought recently. (My husband and I
share a Clem and a Platypus also.)

The Erickson happened to fit me perfectly, is steel and stable, but very
light and it moves like the wind! It's pure art in form and function.

I ride the Platypus most since it goes over everything easily and smoothly
and is so comfortable...and when my husband and I ride together, we can
switch off Rivs mid-ride for fun! But I am so thankful I can have both the
road bike and the Riv bike.

I think you'd love the experience of having a road bike, Riv or otherwise!

Best to you!
Sally

Perhaps excepting an invitation to a Century ride was overly
optimistic. I haven’t ridden more than 35 miles at once in recent memory -
Maybe the proposition should have given me pause, but a foolhardy challenge
is just what we need to feel slightly nervous about from time to time.

The plan was to ride from our homes here in Los Angeles to Santa
Barbara on a route exactly 100 miles away. A “Pier to Pier” ride, from the
Santa Monica Ferris Wheel to Stearns Wharf on the other end.

Hugging the coast, we would follow a “mostly” flat course, with about
2,900 ft of elevation gain over the entire distance.

Not without any climbing, but predominantly gradual climbing, of short,
and rolling hills along the Pacific Coast Highway.

It was fun to think about what food to bring for an average of 200 -
300 calories per hour of riding.

I tried out Tailwind, a hydration drink mix "with electrolytes and
 calories."

I had two bottles, one with water, and one with Tailwind in them at any
given time. I definitely think it helped to mix “drinking” calories as well
 as eating them.

Laying everything out the night before my kids were impressed with the
proposed undertaking. I had to manage expectations and tell them my goal
 was reaching half the distance.

The group met at 4:45 in the morning so we could be on the road by
5:00. Most of my cycling friends are younger, more frequent and thus
stronger riders than I am, and several announced they were now planning to
not only ride the 100 miles to Santa Barbara, but now also ride back.
They laid out a brisk pace with brief stops to get them to the finish with
ample time for their return trip.

Riding early by bike light is always a treat. Devoid of its usual
measure of traffic, Los Angeles is a different town in the dark, and your
required level of city-riding spatial vigilance can relax to a pleasant
 degree.

It was cool out but not cold, and I took off my riding jacket early on.

I had hemmed and hawed about cutting the zip ties on my racing basket
and leaving it behind... In the end, I recognized whatever loss in
aerodynamics was going to be negligible for me, and having a place to shed
layers and plastic bags of dry roasted peanuts was a welcome convenience.

The stretch of PCH in Santa Monica is one of the few that doesn’t have
an ample shoulder for bikes to stay out of the right

Maybe Will can send you one separately? I know it clearly stated there

Re: [RBW] Re: Who’s getting a Platypus tomorrow?

2023-12-10 Thread Sally Bidleman
My husband's (okay, really, OUR) 50 cm purple Platy complete arrived
yesterday by UPS!

We loaded it up asap to get it to our local bike shop before it closed (not
being as savvy mechanically as most of you all...but equally excited for
sure:)... I'd already ordered the pedals, kickstand, tape, twine, etc.

Xmas came early here in California!

Cheers to all...

When my mom was in her 90's, after leading a fairly prim and proper life,
she shared her favorite poem with me.

"Warning," by Jenny Joseph.

Ever since then, I have loved the rebellious spirit of purple!

Thanks so much for all the great advice and for sharing your experiences
re: the car racks! Yesterday afternoon we spent some time in our local shop
and ended up getting that Kuat NV 2.0, 2-Bike Hitch Rack. (Though one of
the mechanics had a 1UP himself and recommended it, too.) They installed it
and we tried it out today on Hwy. 1 (and on our neighborhood potholes!). It
seems very solid and the bike didn't budge...and the combined weight of
bike and rack didn't sink the Subaru either...so all good so far:) When we
get my husband's Platypus (50 cm) we'll see how it does with both bikes.
Here's a photo of the first time on the rack for Clem and of sunset into
the Pacific tonight. Cheers!

2023-11-07 Thread Sally Bidleman
Hi Omar and Chester,

Thanks so much for further info! I like that wheel stop thingy... very
useful I bet. And that quikrstuff rack video was interesting; I especially
liked how you can just fold the rack up and stuff it in the back of a small
SUV. I can see why there's a 2-month wait on those.

We're going to the local shop Saturday to preview the Kuat and any others
they have...probably too impatient to wait another couple months.

I'd really like to head up the coast and ride the 17-Mile-Drive ... haven't
done it since I had my old Stella in college:) But I understand the traffic
is worse now...maybe early in AM would work!

Thanks very much! I looked up Hollywood bike carriers and they seem great,
too. Our local shop is closed today but website indicates they may have
these in the warehouse...Hope to see one and compare.

Peter, great info re: the Mardi Gras colors! I'm thinking of gold + green,
harlequin-style, for the purple bike.

(I'm also remembering the smell of sweet olive blossoms and the taste of a
real beignet and the sound of Preservation Hall...my mom was born there and
I love to visit!)

Yes!

During last-minute stealth research, I discovered my husband actually
preferred purple! So this wonderful, very purple, bike will arrive between
his birthday and Xmas; I can cover both:) Best of all, his PBH is only 2 cm
different from mine; I can ride it, too...AND I get to pick out the color
for his handlebar tape...Much joy in the household tonight...!

Leah and Company,

Excellent reading; thank you! As a new Riv Rider, I've been remiss in
considering legwear (only sported old sweatpants that I can push up as
necessary). I've concentrated more on topsFrench-ish stripes and
Kule-brand "Thank you, have a nice day" t-shirts, etc. And Birkenstocks or
Hokas...Certainly, I aspire to being cuter, but have yet to find a fashion
that will minimize incessant eye-rolling of 22-year-old daughter, ha!

A trailer is the safest option. If you go that route I would consider a
Thule or older Chariot (these can be had very inexpensively). They have
weight adjustable suspension and you can use an infant sling. The general
age recommendation is to wait until 12-18 months but we certainly started
closer to 6 months (My wife and I are both nurse practitioners and got the
Ok from his pediatrician). It will very from child to child but once they
are demonstrating strong head and neck control they should be ok in an
 infant sling.

I personally prefer a Thule Maxi seat on a rack behind me. It’s just
nice not having to deal with the weight and logistics of a trailer. We only
just started doing that on our Cargo E bike now that he’s 16 months and
 gets to ride to daycare.
