Joe is absolutely right, to re use. Especially in times like these, I managed
to pull them off slowly with a pair of pliers and a silicone jar grip!

Is the Susie better suited for rear loading? I tend to do front loading for
ease of access. Has anyone experienced a front loaded susie over road/lumpy

I'm going to echo Kate's experience: Just bought a Platy, and it's
 amazing.

I had the privilege of visiting RBW in November when we took a trip up the
coast, after owning a half dozen of their bikes, and got to ride a couple
of Grant's bikes. I loved the MIT Atlantis, but was thinking the Clem was
the better bike for me. It rode great. I did not ride, but I did look
closely at Will's Gus (or Susie). I used to race mountain bikes, but
pretty much limit my off-roading to hikes in the Los Padres hills near to
our home. The Gus/Susie looked like more bike than I would need. Having
said that, I love the design of the Susie, at least as much as the
Platypus, and my first MTB was a filleted-by-Tom Ritchey. I love that
bike, but know I don't need the tire clearance it offers.

I'd read somewhere on this group that someone preferred a front load on
their Platypus over their Susie, and that's a big selling point to me. I
have a hitchhiker who tags along when I ride alone, as you can see in the
 photos.

I was going to give the thumbs up on a Clem with Will, and then thought
what the heck, I'll check Craigslist as long as we're in Sonoma - and
there was a Platypus for sale. I got there as quick as I could, rode it,
and bought it right away. It has the most wonderful and lively and
 predictable ride. Gobsmacked.

The roads I ride on can be a little rough (only on the Santa Barbara side
of the city - they are of course pristine over in Montecito), and the 48mm
tires are more than enough to accommodate the chipseal (again, see the
photos). I love the low bottom bracket, the chainstay length, and it is
the most beautiful bike I've ever seen.

So that's why *I* selected the Platypus, and it's a marvel of design. I'm
sure the Susie is the same for its intended purpose, and if I lived where
the trails were a little wider, and a little less rocky and steep, I'd be
 in your dilemma.

You're going to love whichever one you get, and we all look forward to the
 photos.

 Cheers,

 Chris

A local mechanic reasoned that the touring canti has the same mechanical
advantage as the neo retros that were modeled after vintage canti’s , the
implication is they are equal. Something about the neo’s being more sensitive
to brake ware. Can anyone verify this?

[RBW] Rapid rise polarizing

2021-07-12 Thread sam . perez . 2002
Hey guys,
Why is there so little info on rapid rise RD and why is it so polarizing.
Sources include bike snob grants blog and random internet sources. Takeaways
were finicky and needing frequent adjustment but also great concept and easy
down shifting. Any experience thoughts insights?

Thanks

I actually have them on my mb-1 , they don’t take bar ends but they remind me
of the north road bars. Plenty. Comfortable road them off-road a few times.
Would be curious to hear about others experience.

Re: [RBW] Re: I'm ready

2021-02-06 Thread Sam Perez
Chris ,
The long haul tucker (not featured because I no longer own it It was
stolen) was a nice ride I think it too had a long wheelbase. I remember
the bike had stout construction and the tires were the big apples. If I
remember were a little rough for the volume. I never experienced a flat. It
was a tank that was the bike I took of I needed to be somewhere and had no
time for incidents. It was a bit twitchy unloaded. Hauling groceries made
it feel stable like a motorcycle. I recall reading somewhere that the LHT
was loosely based on a RIV anything have input on that ?

[RBW] I'm ready

2021-02-03 Thread Sam Perez
I'm ready to get a riv bike but haven't ridden one yet. Bikes I've owned
and emulated rive bikes with are the following.

MB-1 26"
MB-0. 26"
Surly LTH. 26"
EBISU All purpose 650b
Salsa ala carte26"
84 stump jumper 26"
80s univega. 26"

Anyone have experience with same bikes? Do the rivs handle like 80s mt
conversations? after years of riding I'm beginning to get some neck pain
from drop bars. So really an upright sporty rando with day loads up diablo.
Haven't decided what model yet.

Thanks

I had a similar post. For me I tried so many things , I changed the
cassette and chain to eliminate warn variables. I was using a 9s xt deor

helped although I still experience the occasional ghost shift. Latest
theory is perhaps some rd's have a really tight spring but that somthing I
don't know how to test myself.

Re: [RBW] Re: Old school 10 speed

2020-11-12 Thread Sam Perez
Less than a fist on a mirella road frame , with old campy 5 speed and sun
hub up front . It's about half a fist and the top tube was so long I had to
put north road bars to compensate even with the upright position and 33c
tires it handled nicely , on climbs it doesn't flop around like my mountain
bike or dedicated rando bike.

[RBW] Old school 10 speed

2020-11-11 Thread Sam Perez
My old school 10 speed bike ( allthough definitely too big for me) rides
better than some modern bikes. I don't know of it's the frame geometry or
components. With a 42 up front and maybe 28 in the back i claimed hills
with less perceivable effort... Could it be the frame? Or the 10 speed? It
weighs as much as a fully fendered custom rando bike with bells and
whistles.

Any one weigh in on why my old 10 speed seems to glide?

Re: [RBW] Berthoud Aspin - To cutout, or not to cutout?

2020-11-09 Thread Sam Perez
ive had the B17 and B17 imperial and just purchased the aspin a few weeks
ago, so far it's still hard but not uncomfortable. a side by side I felt
that the B17 was more comfortable after a few rides. B17 is a bit wider
than the aspin and that makes it initially not noticeable under you.
another thing is the B17 and B17 imperial feel different, the imperial cut
out feels softer. the aspin is starting to show crease wrinkles where my
sit bones indent but no permanent indentation yet. ill share when put more
miles on it, curious about the cut out as well.

[RBW] Shock stop stem 90mm $120

2020-10-30 Thread Sam Perez
Hi all selling a 90mm shock stop stem originally $150 installed it on my
bike. soften the broken pavement especially from the hoods, However It
immediately reminded me of my t-rex reach. Comes with original box all the
gummies to adjust firmness as reviewed by pathless pedaled. Didn't ride it
long enough to put any dust on it. Local bay area pick up preferred but
will ship.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pacenti parri motos vs switchbackhill 48c

2020-10-23 Thread Sam Perez
I have a bike designed around a 42 with fenders , I just scooped up the
parri motos in 48 don't have calipers to measure but it's tight . Did this
to see if the switchbacks would fit before committing $200. The frame
accommodates 48 w/o fenders. But I think if it's any bigger it won't fit.
Really trying to keep the fenders .
