Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot Wool Sweater Preorder - Anyone In?

2019-09-23 Thread Sean McAtee
David,
That way that I understand this pre-order, is that I purchased and paid-for
a sweater. A delivery charged was added to my order. If I understand this
process correctly (and I may not!), Riv will contact those who have
pre-ordered when the sweaters arrive. At that point (I believe / hope . .
. ) we will have the opportunity to add additional items to the order -
taking us beyond the total purchase needed to earn free shipping.

Hopefully list members who have done this before can chime-in and let me
(us) know whether I am correct in my understanding.

Appreciate the comments. Like Ginz, I wish that I had purchased the
previous Riv derby tweed sweaters. I don't want to miss-out again.
However, I am a bit concerned about buying sight-unseen. I do want to
support Riv, and I tend to trust Grant and his decisions. I might as well
do the same with this. If worse comes to worse, I'll have a warm-ish, but
unattractive sweater to wear outside on my bike, X-C Skiing, raking
leaves, etc.

Anybody have any insight into the style of sweater this will be? A simple
crew neck sweater in wool would certainly work for me.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hand-Cranked Coffee Grinder Recommendation

2019-04-24 Thread Sean McAtee
Thanks again for all of your comments. After doing way more research than
seems necessary, I [think] that I have decided to purchase a Hario Skerton
- Pro model. This seems to offer the best combination of performance and
durability at a cost that seems fairly reasonable. It is a bit larger than
the Porlex. However, it is not so large that I cannot carry it with me on
a bicycle camping trip. I also feel fairly confident that the glass on the
Hario grinder is thick enough that durability will not be a problem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hand-Cranked Coffee Grinder Recommendation

2019-04-23 Thread Sean McAtee
Thanks for your suggestions. It seems like the Porlex mini gets a lot of
love, as does the Hario. I'm going to ponder this a bit more before making
a final decision. I guess I am a bit torn trying to decide how compact of
a unit to purchase. The Porlex mini is small enough that I can easily
carry it on the bike. I've also been reading a bit about the Hario "Mini
Slim Pro" grinder. Several list members have mentioned the Hario Skerton,
but that model is larger than the other models that I have mentioned (so
not as easy to pack or carry on the bike) and it also has a glass bottom,
which may or may not be a concern.

I'm sure that any of the models that have been mentioned would meet my
needs. The struggle, as always, is making the decision about which model
would "best" meet my needs. I should write the model names on small pieces
of paper, place the papers inside a hat, close my eyes and pick the winner.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-14 Thread Sean McAtee
Howard -

Congratulations on your frame order! I noticed earlier today that there
were only three grey Cheviots left. I have a funny feeling that I am going
to follow your lead before the day is over. A Cheviot is quickly becoming
the bike that I do not want to let get away.

I can't seem to recall past practice on "older" frames when a new set
arrives. Is it likely that the remaining "old" Cheviots in stock will be
priced a bit lower as a web special? I do like the green color of the
current frame. However, it lacks the cream headtube of the newer models.

I will be moving the vast majority of the parts over from an old Trek 520 -
Albastache bars, Brooks B 17 saddle, Shimano derailleurs, etc. However, I
will need to get a new set of wheels, as my current bikes all have 130 cm
rear hub spacing. I'm probably going to buy an inexpensive set of wheels,
such as these currently being offered by Rivendell: wheels
. I will also likely add
a new crank - likely the Sugino XD2 wide/low.

I am looking at using a Cheviot for the same general purposes as you.
Congratulations again.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-13 Thread Sean McAtee
This thread has been so informative. Thank you all for your comments and
stories. Having lots of data points certainly is helpful in determining
what course of action to take - to buy or not to buy a Cheviot.

I've read through the comments a few times and the consensus seems to be
that those who have purchased a Cheviot (or a Betty or any other Riv
mixtie). The biggest drawback seems to be the lack of a second (or third)
bottle mount. I certainly see that as a concern if the bike would be used
regularly on longer rides. After all, as Garth and others have noted, it
kind of sucks to spend $1,500 + on a frame only to add a cheesy bottle
holder if you want to carry two bottles. However, given my intended usage,
as a bike that would mainly be ridden around town (farmers market, grocery
store, post office, etc) the number of bottles is not really a concern. I
likely would also use this bike to ride on a few local bike paths (mostly
paved) where the lack of multiple bottle mounts would not be a huge concern.

My guess is that a Clem Smith Jr. would serve my intended purpose just as
well as a Cheviot. However, after riding both (a much more extended ride
on the Clem) I had a much bigger smile after riding the Chev - it simply
seemed to have a bit more life to it than the Clem. I don't know if this
was due to the tubing used on the bikes, the angles, the wheels or some
other factor - the simple reality was that I had more fun riding the
Cheviot than the Clem.

The more I ponder the Chev the less the "girl bike" thing seems like an
issue. One other silly question that is kind of related to the girl bike
thing is the color choice. I rode a green Cheviot at Rivendell. I really
liked the color. The new frames have cream headtubes, which the older
frames do not. One more reason to go for a new frame. Initially I thought
that the orange was the best color. However, the more I think about it the
more attracted I am to the grey. Perhaps this color will make the Chev a
bit more manly, as it will look more like a mountain bike. The description
on the website says that the grey is "old Clem grey." Anyone with a bike
in that color care to comment on how they like the color? Pictures
perhaps? Finally, I have an olive colored saddlesack and a green front bag
that I would use with this bike - is orange or grey likely to be my best
bet with those colors?

Thanks again for your comments.

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet or San Marcos

2013-10-13 Thread Sean McAtee
Thanks for all of your responses. I must admit, I'm not terribly shocked
that the Rambo is considered the way for me to go.

Bo, I'm really intrigued by all that you said. What made you sell the AHH
in favor of a Rambo? I'm curious because another option that I have
considered is saving up my cash to purchase a new or used AHH.

Also, Bo, as far as your 56 Rambo, I wish I could help, but it is too small
for me. Whenever I measure my PBH I end up somewhere between 86 and 87
(I'm about 5 foot 11). Based on those measurements I would be best fit on
at least a 58 Rambo - perhaps even a 60.

By the way, if anyone has a Rambo that has a PBH similar to mine, I would
be curious about your recommendation for size -- would I fit best on a 58
or a 60?

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet or San Marcos

2013-10-13 Thread Sean McAtee
I tend to agree, Eric. Still not sure if a 58 Rambo is the right size for
me. When I got fit for my Bob Brown custom, by a local guy using the
Serotta system, I ended up with a bike that measures 56.2 to the center of
the seat tube at a top tube length of 54. This bike is great for rides up
to about two hours. Beyond that time I end up with a sore back and numb
hands. Therefore, I am looking for a bike that will be more useful /
comfortable on longer rides. I've lusted after a Rivendell for years, but
never had the cash to buy one. Now that cash is still a bit of a struggle,
but I feel like I am in a position to pull the trigger if I get the right
deal. Since Buffalo, NY is a long way from Riv's world headquarters, I
have no real opportunity to get sized by someone at Riv. Thus, I waver on
what size would be best for me.

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet or San Marcos

2013-10-13 Thread Sean McAtee
Steve, thanks for the link to the geometry chart. Dan, I appreciate your
input also. The way that I read the chart and Dan's comments, I am
probably best on a 60. However, I don't know whether I am better off being
a bit big for a 58 or at the smallish end of a 60. The 58 Rambo currently
available on ebay is certainly attractive. I am really tempted to bid on
that one, but I hate to end up with a bike that is too small for me.

Seems like a 60 Ram would be a better bet. Just double checked the
brochure and the 60 was recommended for PBH 87-89 and heights of 5'9-6'1.

 The 58 is 5'7-5'11 and PBH 84-86.

A call to Riv is probably your best bet.

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet or San Marcos

2013-10-13 Thread Sean McAtee
I appreciate your $.02. The bike that I normally ride has the bars a few
cm below the saddle. This is probably one of the causes of the numbness
that I have been having in my hands on longer rides. I was just looking at
the geometry charts. My current bike has a top tube of 54 - the top tube
of the Ram is 3cm longer. Of course, the angles are a bit different on the
bikes.

In the grand scheme of things, when I look at the charts, a few centimeters
does not seem like anything that cannot be adjusted by seats / seat posts
and stems. The 58 Rambo has a standover height of 82.1 versus 79.2 of my
current bike. This seems do-able

Sean, do you like bars at/above/below seat height? As long as it's
below or at, the smaller size should be fine. Then at worst you'll
have an extra 2cm of seat post and stem showing, along w/ a 2cm longer
stem. Everything else would be pretty much the same. If the 58cm ends
up being a bit too small, you would be able to re-sell it pretty
easily, and maybe even find a 60cm to trade straight over for.

 My $.02

Steve, thanks for the link to the geometry chart. Dan, I appreciate your

 being
a bit big for a 58 or at the smallish end of a 60. The 58 Rambo
 currently
available on ebay is certainly attractive. I am really tempted to bid on
that one, but I hate to end up with a bike that is too small for me.

Seems like a 60 Ram would be a better bet. Just double checked the

  5'9-6'1.

  The 58 is 5'7-5'11 and PBH 84-86.

A call to Riv is probably your best bet.

I do agree with that. My Bob Brown custom is a deep burgundy red with a

Re: [RBW] Re: Saluki

My pbh is about 88. Riv recommended that I go with a 56 Sam. Not sure about
my size on a Homer and I can't seem to access Riv's sizing chart

 Hi Sean,

What's your PBH? If you're in the taller overlap zone of the Homers
and the larger Salukis (59cm-62cm), I may be able to contribute to
 your questions.

I recently added a 60cm Saluki to compliment and potentially replace
my 59cm Hilsen. For now, I feel I'm at the point where I've
identified a great size and ergonomic setup, nearly perfect, and now
begin the process of splitting hairs. The Saluki is able to run
slightly wider (Hetre) tires and has cantis and feels a hair larger,
but that's probably due to the puffier 42mm Hetres (my Homer is an
early build and has the narrower tire clearance).

Aesthetically, the bike looks to be of the same high quality. My
Homer was made at Waterford but the Saluki probably at Toyo. The lugs
appear to be mismatched, the top lug of the headtube appearing to be
like the current Homers and the bottom lug of the headtube appearing
to be like the older pointy lugs. I like it.

Here is an archive page on the Saluki:

I have noticed several Salukis for sale recently on ebay. I know that this
bike was produced before the Bleriot, but I have had a somewhat difficult
time finding information about it on the web. I am hoping that a list
member or three might be able to shed some light on this bike for me.

I'm in the market for a bike for longer rides and perhaps some short
touring - Erie Canal, C O Trail, etc. I've had my eyes on a Sam for some
time, but have not yet pulled the trigger (might on the all-blue Sam - what
a deal). Would a Saluki be well-suited for this kind of riding or is it
really designed as a country bike / credit card tourer / rambler / century
 ride bike?

How would the Saluki compare to a Homer?

I can't seem to find a chart that matches PBH to Saluki sizing. Should I
simply use the general chart on the Riv site, matching the 650b section to
my height to choose the correct Saluki?

 Thanks,

 Sean
