Re: [RBW] Re: FS - Ron's Bikes Fabios Fanny - Golidlocks

2023-06-13 Thread Sean Steinle
I think 44cm noodles is right at the minimum of what I'd consider running a
fanny on. On my 42 noodles, the bag fits with space, but I definitely
notice it's there, and there is some rub on my fingers if I wrap them
around the ramps. Also, the side pockets are very finicky with 42s,
couldn't say how they'd do on 44s but they're almost worthless with 42s.

Doug, I think it could work, any chance you could measure from bottom of
the bolt to bottom of the bend? My bike is going to be a french fit with
the stem just a touch above the headtube, want to make sure it'll fit.

[RBW] ISO short quill stem (60-80mm) for my Albastache

2022-04-22 Thread Sean Steinle
Looking to try out Albastache and need a short 26.0 quill stem. Would like
a Nitto deluxe, as I don't need the extension of the standard technomic.

thanks,
Sean in Kansas

[RBW] Re: Casual WTB: Small-Sized Roadish Riv/Any other short riders out there?

2022-04-06 Thread Sean Steinle
Following for my 5'2" wife with 74cm pbh, who is currently making a 50cm
Bridgestone RB-T work with Jitensha bars for casual rides. 700c wheels on
that bike was a mind-boggling choice. I'd love to see her on a more
appropriate 47cm(ish) bike, with appropriate (i.e. not vastly overbuilt)
tubing for someone her size/weight, and 26" wheels. I fear custom is the
only option...

[RBW] Re: Help me buy a Riv

2022-03-28 Thread Sean Steinle
I absolutely loved my 58 650b Hilsen. It was setup with Albatross and was a
total joy to ride. At the same time I had a Nobilette custom rando with
lightweight standard diameter tubing, so an extremely lively frame.
Switching back and forth, the Nobilette was noticeably more springy, but I
never once felt like the Hilsen was sluggish. All smiles everytime I rode
it.

Re: [RBW] FS - 60 Orange Quickbeam

2022-03-28 Thread Sean Steinle
Ok this QB is pending now, but to answer your question saddle height in the
picture is 73cm to top of the saddle in the middle (directly in line with
seatpost). I have no idea on fit because I never built it up, although I
suspect for a more traditional drop bar fit, it's too large for me, one of
the reasons I'm selling it.

Orange was factory, they ran between the green and
silver. http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/quickbeam/index.html

I'm quite confident now that this is a 60, and the TT measures at 58 C-C on
the 60cm. I know it's factory paint because I can still see/feel the decal
lines. I think someone 'de-Rived' it for anti-theft reasons, perhaps?

[RBW] FS - 60 Orange Quickbeam

2022-03-27 Thread Sean Steinle
Reposting with the correct size in the title, I've since discovered Riv
uses (used?) C-T for their frame sizes.

I've decided to go a different direction mid-build. This one is well used,
but no dents or dings. Took pics of a couple spots of missing paint, but
the paint has wear all over the bike. I can take more pics if needed. I
have a brand new set of QB decals and headbadge, so this is a perfect
candidate for a new paint job!

Measures 58cm from the center of the crank bolt to the center of the top
tube, 60cm C-T.

I'm offering this in a choose your own flavor fashion. As pictured it's a
total hodge podge. The crank is a VO Grand Cru double that has the inner
ring taken off. The front wheel is a vintage Trek take-off, 36h, nothing
special wheel.

The rear is the star of the show. 32h Phil flip flop hub, 16-18 WI dos eno
one side and Surly 17-20 Dingle on the other. Currently laced to a Mavic
Open Pro, but has hairline cracks on a few of the nipples.

I'm keeping the pedals, saddle, and seatpost. Cockpit is currently Nitto
Deluxe w/ Noodles. I've got other parts in my parts bin.

Frame/Fork/Headset/BB price - $800 + shipping from Lawrence, KS.

If you want parts, we'll put together a package and work on a price.

[RBW] Re: FS - 58 Orange Quickbeam

2022-03-27 Thread Sean Steinle
Thanks for the input, I've never found definitively how Riv measures their
ST. I always assumed it was C-C, hence why I called this one a 58. The
measurements of my Hilsen corresponded with Riv's geo charts when measuring
C-C. Anyways, this one is 58 C-C and 60 C-T, so take that for what it's
worth.

2022-03-27 Thread Sean Steinle
I've decided to go a different direction mid-build. This one is well used,
but no dents or dings. Took pics of a couple spots of missing paint, but
the paint has wear all over the bike. I can take more pics if needed. I
have a brand new set of QB decals and headbadge, so this is a perfect
candidate for a new paint job!

Measuring QBs seems to be harder than it should be based on other listings,
but this one measures 58cm from the center of the crank bolt to the center
of the top tube.

[RBW] Let's talk about the All Rounder

2022-03-17 Thread Sean Steinle
I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I honestly can't find
much about the All Rounder, in the way of ride reports, reviews, etc. It
seems to be a Holy Grail bike for several, and I'm curious, is it simply
the fact that they're rare and hard to find now, or is there truly
something special about it?

I remember Grant talking about the old Bridgestones in an article I came
across, and his sentiment was essentially 'They're fine bikes, but they
don't stack up against Rivs'. At least part of his reasoning was that he'd
continued to refine with Rivendell, and the improvements were drastic
enough that he felt the Rivs were in a different league. This makes me
wonder if Grant would have a similar feeling about the All Rounder. I'd
love to hear from those who own/have owned one. What's the verdict, is it
truly one of the best Rivs out there? Worth the price of admission if one
is lucky enough to find one in their size?

Thanks for humoring me :)

Trying to finish my Quickbeam build before Spring. Wondering if anyone has
a nice-ish crankset they aren't using. 165 or 167.5 arms strongly preferred.

Starting the search for a nice wheelset for my quickbeam. 700c, 120mm rear
spacing. This is my only bike so I'd like to do it up right, maybe some
Phil hubs. I'm a lightweight rider, only 130 lbs, so don't want anything
too overkill on spoke count, probably 32h.

[RBW] Re: WTB: 58cm Saluki Frame or Bike

This may be too many hoops to jump through, but last I checked with Riv,
they had a Saluki headbadge and decals they were willing to sell me if I
ever got my frame repainted. Since it's the same bike, it's not like it's
cheating, you'd have as much of a genuine Saluki as any of the others.

when I last inquired about six months ago, Roman inforrmed me that if I
decided to repaint, they still had Saluki headbadge and decals they'd be
willing to sell for it. Just sayin...

[RBW] FS - 58cm Toyo A Homer Hilsen (650b Hiluki) - Frame & Fork + extras

2019-12-08 Thread Sean Steinle
Selling my very early Toyo Homer. 58cm. 650b. From all accounts, this
appears to be a Saluki frame that became a very early Hilsen. It has a
Saluki serial #, and the Saluki fork lug. This is a special bike, and I
absolutely love it. Only selling due to pairing down of life stuff. It's
got lots of beausage, some shellac drippings, and a good amount of paint
chips, which I've tried to take lots of detailed pictures of, a couple tiny
ones with possibly some surface rust? I don't know, but look for yourself.
Haven't found any dents. Comes with headset, bottom bracket, kickstand,
tektro brakes, and fenders. Does NOT include water bottle cages or shifter
housing stops.

Asking price is $1,000 plus bikeflights shipping from Kansas.

Definitely don't uglify it. I mean, half of what you pay for in a Rivendell
is aesthetics (this is coming from a Hilsen owner). My experience is that
most people only think carbon fiber drop bar bikes and full sus. mtbs are
nice and expensive. Rivs basically look like old steel bikes with nice
paint jobs to most people.

[RBW] Re: ISO Homer Hilsen size 46

2019-06-25 Thread Sean Steinle
The blog EndlessVeloLove had a 47cm Saluki they sold like two years ago:
http://endlessvelolove.blogspot.com/2017/07/blast-from-past-former-rivendell-returns.html

They also post here sometimes as G.E. It might be worth shooting them a
message, if they still have the buyer's info, maybe they could contact them
to let them know if they're ever interesting in selling, that they know
someone who's looking? Maybe that's too weird? I don't know, two years is a
long time in the bike world, and I've found that wanting to sell something
doesn't always translate into actually listing it. People let stuff linger
in the garages/basemenst for months and years before finally selling it.

I've found them excellent on Jitensha bars, which are shorter than the rest
mentioned here, but similar shape. I do wonder about them on bars with a
little more sweep, though. I feel like the design is optimisted for
straight bars, but I've seen plenty on Map type bars.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hiluki vintage ??

2019-05-01 Thread Sean Steinle
following up: UPS man came early so I ducked out of work for half an hour
to put the bike inside, as it was propped up against my garage with nobody
home for delivery.

My bike seems to be an enigma in all ways. So, here's what we have:

58cm 650b Hilsen
early SA serial number (so confirmed Toyo build)
Saluki fork crown, like this:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/Images/rbw/rr38_pg45.jpg
AHH decals and headbadge
and to top things off, it's the lighter, Waterford Hilsen blue, not the
darker Toyo.

Previous owner is a list member, and he's promised to tell me the history
of the bike when he gets a break for work. I suppose it's possible someone
just repainted and rebadged an old Saluki. I also wonder if Riv had an
unpainted Saluki frame lying around, and decided to make it a Hilsen?

Either way, I'm excited by my findings, because A) I like unique things
with interesting histories, and B) I prefer the decals and headbadge of the
Saluki, so I thought about reaching out to the folks at RBW to see if they
still had any Saluki headbadges, and whether they'd sell me one for this
bike. That way, when the day comes to repaint, I can reincarnate it back to
it's 'original' form. I can't see why they wouldn't sell me one, if they
have them, but, who knows!

One thing that doesn't seem to get discussed with rebadged Salukis/early

[RBW] Re: Balance Bikes for Bouncing Babies

2019-03-11 Thread Sean Steinle
TLDR; Kokua LikeABike Jumper! By far the favorite of my kids.

Long Version:

I like to think I've had a pretty good sampling of bikes for the littles.
Our stable consists of:

Balance Bikes (all 12") - Kokua LikeABike Jumper, Yedoo TooToo, Islabike
Rothan
14" Pedal - Islabike CNOC
16" Pedal - Spawn Banshee, Prevelo Alpha 2

I've had two go through the ranks, a third who is another year off. For my
son, he was a couple months past his second birthday when he started on the
balance bike, and moved to his pedal bike (never used training wheels), on
his third birthday. Didn't miss a beat with the pedal bike. Both started
out on the Yedoo TooToo, and moved to the Kokua. The Yedoo is great for a
small kiddo, but the narrow handlebar makes for a twitchy ride as the kid
grows. Biggest points in favor of the Kokua are: the wider handlebar, 2
seatposts (short and tall), and the rear 'suspension' is a welcome addition
on the rough stuff. My middle guy is about to turn 4, has been riding his

[RBW] Re: OT: ReMarkable Paper Tablet Users

2018-10-29 Thread Sean Steinle
No help here, only chiming in to say that I really want one now! When
editing, I like to read my drafts on my kindle rather than on the computer,
as I feel the more book-like experience lends to better editing, but then I
have the conundrum of where to mark down my edits as I'm reading. This
would be like printing off entire drafts and marking notes ont he paper,
only it would waste no paper and you can do it endlessly at no cost (aside
from the initial investment). Sounds fantastic!

2018-09-05 Thread Sean Steinle
Joe, that's a really helpful pic, thanks! I see why you have reservations
about the 52 working for my wife. In the end, I totally get the advice, and
appreciate it. Any incarnation of a 52 Clem for my wife would be pushing
it, and I know the mantra, the best bike is the one that fits.

With that out of the way, and because this is fun to dream about, even if
not realistic, is that a standard B17 on there? The B17 is ~2.5cm taller
than the Cambium I'd put on the Clem, so that buys a bit for the amount of
seatpost we could play with. It'd be tight, there's no denying it...

Cam, I'm kinda shocked that you have to slam the seatpost on the Clem for
your wife with an 81cm PBH when Riv states that folks with PBH starting at
74 can ride the Clem, that's a 7cm difference. Do you have a super tall
sprung saddle on?? The seat tube is 52cm C-T, right?

[RBW] Re: Sharing a 52 Clem L with my much shorter spouse. Feasable? Crazy?

2018-09-05 Thread Sean Steinle
For a data point, my wife was able to ride my Schwinn High Sierra without
any complaints. It measures at 20" (~50.8cm) C-T seattube TT is 56.5cm, and
at the time was outfitted with a 120mm Deluxe steam and Albatross bars. So,
my thinking was, add 1 cm to the seat tube, I'll check and see how her
saddle height was on the High Sierra, but, it has the monstrously tall
original Viscount foam saddle. A lower profile saddle would effectively
gain her a cm or two. Honestly, I'm more worried about reach than saddle
height. She seemed fine with the Albas, but the 52 Clem has a TT almost 5cm
longer. I'm guessing this could negated with a 100mm stem and some Choco
bars.

I don't know, if Grant can ride a 60cm Cheviot, which the Riv chart would
have him barely squeezing on, and call it his smoothest riding, nearly
favorite bike, I wonder why the same couldn't happen with my wife and the
52 Clem L? Something to chew on I guess...

[RBW] Re: Sharing a 52 Clem L with my much shorter spouse. Feasable? Crazy?

2018-09-05 Thread Sean Steinle
Alas, seems like this wouldn't work out. Riv technically starts at the 52
at a PBH of 74, so I thought with my wife only being 5mm off, perhaps she
could squeeze it. I did think about cockpit swap where I would use ergons
and thumb shifters so I could switch over without recabling, so you and I
were on the same page there, Ed!

I'd have to sell my Nobilette rando to afford two Rivs, so I think I'll
just keep looking for an old ATB to convert for my foul weather commuter,
and continue to fix up the '94 RBT for my wife.

[RBW] Sharing a 52 Clem L with my much shorter spouse. Feasable? Crazy?

2018-09-04 Thread Sean Steinle
So, I've never really looked at the Clem L until today, especially not at
the geometry chart. Didn't realize the sizes catered to such wide ranges,
which of course makes sense with a step-through. Here's the dilemma, my
wife is 5'2", just measured her PBH at 73.5 cm. If I was buying a Clem just
for her, it would be the 45, no brainer. I'm 5'10", PBH 86.5, so at the
high end of a 52. Here's why I want to do it:

   - My wife doesn't ride *that *often, so it's hard to justify spending
Riv money on a bike for her.
   - I just bought a beautiful, but expensive rando bike, but it almost
feels too nice to commute on. I feel like something in a lower price tier
would be a bit more freeing. Locking it up outside of a store on the way
home, leaving it outside on a slushy day instead of dragging my rando
through the office (I'm not locking it outside, period).
   - Lastly, I just really want a Riv, and I feel like this shared
(multi-purpose, minimalist, need I go on?) bike thing could be the ticket
   with my wife.

My vision for the 52 Clem L: Foul weather (or just all the time, we'd see
how it goes) commuter for me. Then when we go on family rides, my wife will
hop on the Clem and I'll take the rando bike.

So what's my reservation? I think a 52 Clem would work just fine for me,
and I think my wife could fit it with a slammed seat post, the question is,
could I find a cockpit that she could reach that wouldn't leave me feeling
squished when I'm riding it? Thoughts on this idea in general would be
appreciated!

[RBW] Re: Effect of reach from changing stem length vs raising/lowering

2018-08-18 Thread Sean Steinle
To add to the number of variables we've already discussed, I stumbled upon
some articles on hand positioning for drops
(http://lovelybike.blogspot.com/2012/06/drop-bar-hand-positions-introduction.html),

which have introduced me to a hand position I haven't used much before and
hadn't really heard of, the ramps. Feel stupid for not having really heard
of it until now, but I think this may explain a lot. I always thought if
people weren't tucking in, then were either on the hoods or on the tops.
When I ride my new bike, I find my hands naturally gravitating toward the
ramps, but I kept thinking this wasn't a 'proper' position for long
portions of a ride. I kept thinking I needed to stretch for the hoods.
After reading Jan Heine talk about preferring longer reach bars and
primarily using the ramps and not the hoods, combined with the fact that
this bike was built up heavily with Jan's influence, I feel like this stem
and bar length might suit the ramp hand position more than hoods, for a
rider of my proportions. Not sure how other folks here feel about ramps vs
hoods, but I'm excited to give the ramps some miles as my primary hand
position and see how that goes.

[RBW] Re: Effect of reach from changing stem length vs raising/lowering

2018-08-15 Thread Sean Steinle
Thanks for the advice so far. In my area, I honestly wouldn't trust anyone
to do a good bike fit. Maybe I'm wrong. The only shops in my area are
Specialized/Trek/Giant shops and I've just been unimpressed with the
answers to most of my questions.

I went home and measured to get exact figures. Top of handlebar is actually
5cms below saddle height, and I took the stem out to measure. It's a
beautiful fillet brazed piece, painted to match the bike. The thing is, the
paint stops below the point where it's currently set, and there's only 3cm
left until you hit the top of the wedge anyways, so I'm pretty sure this is
a quill stem that's not actually meant to be adjustable. It's good to know
that the main thing I can do to feel less stretched is to shorten the stem,
and I'm pretty sure any stem I buy will have 5cm more of adjustability than
the current one to get the bars to saddle height should I desire. My
biggest hangup is taking off this beautiful painted to match stem. I kind
of feel like I should just keep riding for a while to see if I can get used
to it. If I'm honest, I think the stretched out feeling will start to
become more natural, I'm just not sure if I'll get used to the neck craning
having the bars nearly 2 inches below saddle height, combined with them
being far away.

[RBW] Effect of reach from changing stem length vs raising/lowering

2018-08-14 Thread Sean Steinle
I'm feeling a bit too stretched out on my new rando bike with noodles. It
currently has a 110cm stem, and the bars are a good 2 or 3 cms below saddle

As I set out to buy a new stem, I'm wondering, how much shorter do I go on
the stem if I plan to raise the bars to saddle height as well? I'm sure
it's dependent on HA & SA, but I'm wondering if there is a ballpark ratio

[RBW] Re: The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-14 Thread Sean Steinle
Update!

Thanks to everyone for the replies! This garnered more responses than I
expected, and the discussion was extremely helpful.

I've decided to go in a non-rivish direction for this bike. I think at my
weight, and with the riding I want to do, a lightweight tubing with low
trail is more ideal. I've taken the plunge and am now the proud owner of
the Velo Cult/Nobilette rando that was recently for sale on the iBOB list
(pics here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/113550232@N02/albums/72157650396039686). In
the end it's everything I want in a bike at an unbeatable price. I still
hope to own a Riv one day. I'd like an AHH, but that would probably be far
too much crossover with the Nobilette. We'll see what is Riv is offering
when I'm ready, which will not be for a long time if I want to stay
married. Small plug, in case anyone is interested, the Raw Lacquer Ti
Brommie is for sale on the iBOB list.

Thanks all!
Sean

[RBW] Re: The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-12 Thread Sean Steinle
Everything that's been said has been super helpful! Chris, your post is a
really good direct comparison for me, because our weight is nearly
identical. I don't prefer a rock solid feel, lively would be much more the
ticket. I think for a bike to feel lively to me, there aren't many Rivs
that would fit the bill. Given that I already know I like the low trail of
my Brommie, I'm thinking something like a Rambler would be more suitable
for me.

Honestly, it's kind of funny because I've gone full circle (owning probably
the lightest-weight "Riv" bike out there in the San Marcos) to wanting the
stoutest (Hunq/Bomba) back to wanting lightweight tubing (the San Marcos
that I already have!) San Marcos isn't built up though, and I want to go
650B, and low-trail, which the SM is neither.

I'd still like to own a Riv at some point, I think if I do, it will be a
650b MUSA AHH, or an old Atlantis (I think they were made with lighter
tubing than the are now??).

In the meantime, anyone have a Rambler they're looking to unload? :)

[RBW] FS - Soma San Marcos Frame & Fork - 54cm v1.5 - $500 + shipping

2018-07-11 Thread Sean Steinle
I'm the second owner, bought on impulse recently and decided I don't think
I want to build it up. This is the first version, second run with the fork
eyelets for a rack. The album is mainly photos of the blems, which the
previous owner treated with a gray primer. No dents, but and I missed any
blems they're more minor than the ones I pictured. $500 net to me plus Bike
Flights.

[RBW] Re: The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-10 Thread Sean Steinle
Thanks all for the responses. I'm trying hard to go N+0 with most stuff in
my life, and while I know I can't go wrong, I know I could go *more *right
:) Sounds like I could get a Joe, AHH, Hunq, or Atlantis and be perfectly
happy for any type of riding I'd want to do. Honestly, I think the Atlantis
fits the bill very nicely, I've just never loved the color, and paying
extra for paint on an already very expensive frame just doesn't seem right.
AHH and Hunq on the other hand have some of the most beautiful paint jobs
I've seen on any bike. App sounds great but since I'm trying to go N+0 I
want to go whole hog and get MUSA.

Justin & Shoji, I think that advice is spot on. I wasn't clear though, my
San Marcos is unbuilt, just F Unfortunately, my only bike to experiment
with at the moment is a Brompton, so not a great starting point. One thing
I did realize, before I sold my previous bike (Salsa Casseroll) when I took
it out for a few rides after riding my Brompton for several months, is that
I really have come to love the low trail of my BrommieI know, probably
sort of heresy on this list, but, it is what it is. So that's sort of
giving my pause about everything in general. I do know that I'd get used to
mid-high trail again once I started riding it regularly, it just felt sooo
wonky and awkward after riding low trail for so long.

But surely soliciting advice on a forum will end in an objective, unanimous
frame reccomendation to end my analysis paralysis forever,
right..right??? :)

[RBW] The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-09 Thread Sean Steinle
So, I see lots of discussion around how a bike handles for tall/heavy
riders. What I don't see is much about us featherweights. Is it because we
don't have to worry about it, or what? I'm 125 pounds if I'm lucky, and I'm
lusting after a Bomba/Hunq. The thing is though, I'm wondering if it's
overkill. I live in Kansas and have endless miles of country roads with
loose, large gravel that I want to explore, and dip my toes into some
bikepacking. I also commute to work, and buying a new bike will likely mean
selling my Titanium Brommie, so this new bike will see plenty of paved
roads for commuting duty as well.

I bought a Soma San Marcos (54 cm 700c version) frame on an impulse,
without doing any research. Everything that Grant has said about it though
is that it's made with lightweight tubing and is a road bike. I was
originally thinking about doing a 650b conversion to get 42s under there,
but now I'm second guessing it with Grant's "this is a road bike" remarks.
With my interest in lots of gravel riding and bikepacking, this frame seems
like a poor choice.

Sorry for the long-winded post. I think my real question boils down to:
does being very light let me pick whichever frame I want as long as tire
clearance and geo are good, without the worry about putting too much stress
on the frame on rough surfaces? Or is a Hunq/Bomba still a good choice for
me?
