Thanks, both, for the suggestions. That's the first I've heard of Frost

Patrick - that's great to know about waterproofing! I was eyeing a BagBoy

[RBW] Handlebar bags similar to Acorn waxed canvas?

2020-07-29 Thread Tully Lanter
I'm in need of a small, preferably waxed canvas handlebar bag like the one

Acorn makes.

Alas, they're out for 6 weeks or so.

Who else makes something similar? That combination of material + size and
shape has eluded me...

My experience on a 52cm Clem with Boscos was much the same: contact only at
very slow speeds--like U-turn-on-a-sidewalk slow. It was never a practical

[RBW] Rain Cape Recommendation

I picked up a Vaude Valdipino for about $40 shipped from western Europe
(France, I believe). So far, so good. It does flap something awful above
~15mph, but it has me completely sold on the poncho concept. The hood works
nicely, too.

RBW has a large Grundens poncho on sale for $80 now, too. Haven't tried one but
the waist tie should help with flapping. No hood on that one.

since I wouldn't have anything to use most of the parts for.

and keep the fenders to use elsewhere.

[RBW] FS: Misc. Nitto, Sugino, White, Dia Compe, VO parts

2018-10-11 Thread Tully Lanter
After cockpit experiments and a partial bike sale, my parts bin runneth
over. I need these gone before I go looking for another frame to put them
them on...

Everything is solid with normal signs of wear unless otherwise noted.

1) Nitto Albastache bars, $40
2) Velo Orange Porteur bars, $20. Barely used.
3) Nitto Technomic 100m quill stem, $35.
4) Nitto Dirt Drop 80mm stem, $40. Lightly used.
5) White Industries DOS ENO 17t/19t freewheel, $50.
6) Sugino chainrings (38, 42, 46, 52), $10 each.
7) Sugino bashguard (up to roughly 42t), $30. Barely used.
8) Nitto Crystal Fellow seatpost, $50. 27.2mm diameter. About 25cm to the
clamp, 20cm to the setback portion.
9) Dia Compe 980 cantilever brakes (the new ones), $40. Barely used.
10) Dia Compe non-aero levers, 2 pairs. One has slightly better hoods.
Includes 3 olive ferrules, just one shy. $15 for both. Older.
11) Dia Compe inverse brake levers, $10. Older.
12) Suzue QR front track hub, $30. Older. (Still in an original Quickbeam
wheel, but the rim is probably too worn to justify shipping the whole
thing.)

Everything plus actual shipping from 98052. Probably ~$15 for the bars and
down from there, less whatever I can combine.

2018-10-08 Thread Tully Lanter
Lum, lambbo - Agreed on looks! Striking from end to end, head badge
included. Not sure it could get nicer.

Bicycle Belle (great username!) - Yes, it would be the 52cm, and I found
the thread you mentioned just yesterday. Our local buses can accommodate a
wheelbase of 46"...and Mr. Pythagoras tells me ~46.5" on the 52...so I
imagine it's close enough.

Joe, Adam - Interesting to hear pretty much opposite takes on their
stoutness! If nothing else, that speaks to the difference that the right
tires make.

Aesthetics push me toward the Cheviot, no question. V-brakes would be nice,
but I'm satisfied with long-reach Tektro sidepulls and salmon Kool-Stops on
my commuter. But the tire clearance...and *budget* clearance...of a Clem
are appealing. Perhaps wisest not to split too many hairs, but take
whichever comes up first, knowing I *really *can't go wrong here.

I've tested a Clem L and liked it. A lot. Silky smooth, 650b (in 52cm),
step-through for those unplanned traffic/trail dismounts, ample tire
clearance...

However, it felt overly stout for my 150 lbs and minimal cargo.

Theoretically, the Cheviot seems like it would have a spritelier feel à la
Sam/Homer while keeping the long chainstays and low, stretched-out top
tube. For whoever has ridden some/all of these, is that about right?

Not sure whether long-wheelbase models would fit in our buses' bike
racks...but that's another matter!

[RBW] Ride recap - country biking on local paths

2018-10-07 Thread Tully Lanter
Riv content: Albatross-inspired handlebars ;)

Seattle-area weather gets fickle around this time of year. There's an equal
chance of crisp, sunny days and gray, drizzly ones. Saturday was closer to
the former. With the Quickbeam en route to a new home, I took my commuter
out into the fall foliage for a between-Rivs "country biking" session.

Some photos and comments are here
.

It totaled about 20 miles with, perhaps, a couple thousand feet of total
climbing. I previously rode that route last winter on a light, 20-speed
"gravel" bike (long since sold due to lack of utility). The fairly upright
single-speed was a totally different experience, but a *more* enjoyable one
despite the grunting and groaning that a sole, 62" gear induces on 15%
hills. I was delighted with the combination of 480mm chainstays and a
longer top tube with Albatross-like bars, even on fairly harsh 35c tires
that weren't totally up to the task.

It took all of five miles to become clear that a little more of the same--a
bit more chainstay length, BB drop, tire clearance, not to mention Riv
build quality--would be sublime.

[RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2018-09-28 Thread Tully Lanter
Great thread!

For sporty riding, the Quickbeam makes me a Golden Ager by default.

For utilitarian riding, rougher trails, and/or just cruising, I'd almost be
certainly be a Clemster. In the spirit of scientific rigor, I should get
one just to confirm...

Re: [RBW] A gravel jaunt on the Quickbeam

2018-09-25 Thread Tully Lanter
Lum - Yes, indeed we do. The glorious summers and early autumns make all
the gray, drizzly month a lot easier. Hope you get to ride out here one of
these days. Sequim is a *really* beautiful place.

Patrick & Patrick - These are 35c Delta Cruisers, so a very supple 38 like
the Barlow Pass sounds promising if the QB stays with me a while longer.
Clearance will be tight but I can picture it working. Just mildly concerned
about puncture protection. It has a 17/19 DOS ENO, by the way. Gear-inches
fall in the high-50s and mid-60s, if memory serves.

[RBW] A gravel jaunt on the Quickbeam

2018-09-24 Thread Tully Lanter
You can't ask for better weather than late September in the Northwest.
Unless warm, dry, and sunny isn't your cup of tea. So, with my Quickbeam
apparently not on the verge of selling, how better to enjoy a beautiful
afternoon than to take it on a longer, gravelly-er ride than usual?

We live near a beautiful path that follows a utilities right-of-way a few
miles before connecting with the similar but far longer Tolt Pipeline
Trail. The road crossings are relatively few but, like most east-west
routes in the Seattle area, the climbs are remarkably steep!

Here are a few hasty photos and notes
 from the ride.

The Quickbeam was a delight, and even more enjoyable than I expected on
this sort of ride. Quite a revelation to enjoy it without my usual
commuting load. The VO Porteur bars--necessary for a comfortable city
riding position--were too relaxed. I found myself mostly on the curves,
wishing for a bit more reach, even though I appreciated their height during
the steep, twisty descents (not pictured since they're not conducive to
stopping mid-way!). I'll revert Noodle bars with a taller stem to try to
split the different.

More tire clearance would have been nice, less for smoothness (not that I'd
object!) than for traction on steep, loose segments. Toe overlap also
becomes a problem during the twistier portions, especially uphill. Removing
the fenders would help, but they're necessary during most of the year here.
All the more so on a bike that serves first and foremost as a commuter. I
haven't yet decided what to replace the Quickbeam with, but does seem like
a longer 650b frame, or even 26" (if available for an ~86cm PBH), would
suit me well.

Anyhow, I plan to extend this ride significantly next weekend, and perhaps
catch a few photos of the gorgeous forests a few miles (and a thousand feet
of climbing) past where I ended. Not a bad little corner of the world!

[RBW] Here's my new Atlantis

Looking good! I haven't seen many blacked-out Rivs, but the contrast with the
vivid frame color is striking, and a great look all the way around.

I would love to read your impressions of how those two compare.

[RBW] WTB: Non-aero levers + Dirt Drop/similar stem

2018-09-23 Thread Tully Lanter
I'm continuing my Quickbeam cockpit experiments in hopes that something really
clicks. Next up: an 80-100mm Dirt Drop stem, or something comparable.

Also looking to mount some non-aero levers at the same time. Anything
functional is fine by me, so long as ferrules and the like (if missing) aren't
tough to track down.

Thanks!

2018-09-21 Thread Tully Lanter
Minor update: I've mounted the new Dia Compe 980 canti's front and rear, which
went on with ease and nicely compliment the look of the bike. Will include the
original Suntours just in case the buyer finds them useful.

I can confirm (as I was advised in another thread) that there is no heel
contact with these brakes, at least for me.

To come down slightly/give a break on shipping, let's call it a flat $1300
*shipped* in the lower 48 (and packed by my local shop).

Quick clarifiations: the existing brakes (Suntour XC Pro) will remain on
the bike and the new Dia Compes will be in the package. Two-fer-one, or
one-point-five-fer-one anyhow. Additionally, I didn't plan to include the

Yes, I went with the 23.8mm Porteur and installed the levers without issue.
Will keep the Dirt Drop in mind should I get the itch to experiment

Fortunately, from today's initial ride, the Porteur (exactly as in

2018-09-10 Thread Tully Lanter
A few things to unload and others to pick up. First, for sale:

- Nitto Noodle bars, 46cm. Came with my Quickbeam, and they're nice, but not
upright enough. $35 + shipping.
- Nitto Albastache bars. Recently purchased used, also nice, but still not
upright enough. $40 + shipping.
- Cane Creek(?) aero brake levers with black hoods. Much older but work well
and feel good. Just switched to inverse levers. $15 + shipping.

Will update with photos next chance I get. Would guess at most $15 to ship the
bars in the lower 48 and $5 for the levers.

Meanwhile, I'd love to pick up:

- Cantilever brakes, preferably a pair, but I only urgently need one for the
rear.
- A front wheel with a 700c, QR, 6V3W dynamo hub and ample braking surface
left. Compatible front and rear lights are definitely of interest, too!

Keith - That's an interesting note about the spring colors and insertion

Dave - I'm running 35mm Delta Cruisers under 50mm fenders, and it's tight
but not worrisome. Wouldn't be surprised if (some) 38s also fit.

[RBW] Bar-end brake levers on Albastache?

2018-09-01 Thread Tully Lanter
Has anyone tried that combo?

I plan to put Albastache bars on my Quickbeam, and realized that levers
like these

 should
preserve more hand positions while keeping the brakes accessible from the
wide, short-reach position.

[RBW] Re: New(-to-me) Quickbeam

2018-09-01 Thread Tully Lanter
Thanks, all, for the brake tips. The mounts do have three holes, but this
particular model (Suntour XC Pro) uses an internal spring. Haven't opened
it up yet, but should be simple enough, based on this explanation
.
There's more cable drag than I'd like for the rear (probably my own fault!)
so I haven't ruled that out, either.

Meanwhile, the front feels *excellent *and is already making me a fan of
canti's!

Philip - The other neat thing about the PDW mounts, as you might already
know, is that they can break away. Quite reassuring on wooded trails!

Thanks, all. Ample dirty, muddy, meandering to come!

Eric - The maddening thing is that no amount of loosening/tightening the
springs on either/both arms has done trick. Surely there's a simple

Yep, you'll notice. In my experience, that small of a reduction feels less

[RBW] Long(er) fender daruma bolts for basket/rack on Quickbeam

2018-08-10 Thread Tully Lanter
I've got a gorgeous green Quickbeam sitting on the patio, recently arrived
from a fellow RBW member, ready to roll but for a basket and rack.

Unfortunately there's just one eyelet front and rear, and mounting anything
to QR axles seems imprudent, if even possible.

The fenders (Berthoud stainless) are currently in these

 clever
daruma bolts, which are too short for the basket and rack stays (about 2mm
and 4mm wide, respectively). Longer daruma bolts seem like the most elegant
solution, but may not exist. Anyone know where to look?

If something like the SKS clips

 were
compatible with Berthoud stays, that might be even better. I considered
good ol' P-clamps but am concerned (paranoid?) about mounting loads where a
frame wasn't quite designed for it.

Open to other suggestions, of course!

[RBW] WTB: 58cm Quickbeam/SimpleOne (or others?)

2018-06-24 Thread Tully Lanter
I briefly looked for a Quickbeam/SimpleOne over the winter to no avail
(turns out I was seeking the wrong size anyhow)...but now it's time to
resume the search!

Seeking a 58cm frame (5'10" with 85-86cm PBH) and am OK with complete
bikes, partial builds, or just F/F/HS. Shipping would be to the Seattle
area.

I realize the QB/SO are hard to find these days and *am *open to a chain
tensioner on some other lighter-duty Riv model. Canti mounts and clearance
for 35mm tires with fenders are the only must-haves.

[RBW] Re: Stack and reach of 55 sizes of Appaloosa and (current) Sam?

2018-06-23 Thread Tully Lanter
It's the vertical distance between the center of the crank and the top(?)
of the head tube, so it gives *some idea *of how tall the front end will
feel. I emphasize "some idea" because factors like BB drop, frame reach,
head and seat tube angles, etc. can make the same stack number feel wildly
different...and that's before you even move the quill stem up/down!

[RBW] Re: Seems I stumbled across the most(?) Rivendell-like alternative out there

2018-05-27 Thread Tully Lanter
I'd agree with that speculation: things like the freewheel and long-reach
brake calipers (both serviceable but not remotely impressive) probably
knock $100 off the sticker price, plus another $100 or whatever for
comparable headsets and bottom brackets...zero frame embellishments...and
the numbers start to make sense to me. The 4130 was a (pleasant) surprise,
though.

[RBW] WTB: Quickbeam/SimpleOne size 56cm

2017-12-28 Thread Tully Lanter
Title about says it all! Finally unloaded my seldom-ridden mountain bike,
and am itching to get back on a single-speed.

I'd strongly prefer a Quickbeam/SimpleOne if anybody is looking to move a
complete 56, but non-Riv options with roughly comparable geometry would be
all right by me. Not sure how feasible, but I'd like to stay well under $1k
shipped (to 98052)...with some flexibility if needed.

Best,

Tully

[RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-11-04 Thread Tully Lanter
Thanks, Davey. That makes a whole lot of sense.

I ended up going a different direction, thanks to an extraordinary (and totally
unexpected) deal on a city/light cargo bike that meets all of my utilitarian
needs to the letter.

The savings were such that a second bike for recreational "needs"...the longer,
faster weekend road rides and whatnot...is totally feasible. And easily
justified. I'll be watching the Roadini discussions/reviews here with great
interest!

[RBW] Re: What is a Rivvish bike?

2017-10-29 Thread Tully Lanter
Not (yet) a Riv owner so take this with an extra-large grain of salt. What
put RBW on my radar--and keeps numerous brands off--is that the bikes all
seem to:

   - Favor versatility over specialization
   - Maintain a healthy skepticism toward technical changes with cost
and/or complexity that overwhelms any practical benefits
   - Let form follow function, but keep function practical (e.g., city and
trail riding, not triathlons or cliff-hucking), and then "pretty it up"
enough to enjoy looking at it.

I started modifying previous bikes with those priorities in mind. It got me
wondering if someone more experienced hadn't already done the same, but
more thoroughly. Turns out yes.

[RBW] WTB: 52cm Clem, complete or frameset

2017-10-29 Thread Tully Lanter
I am in the market for a 52cm Clem! Preferably a complete bike, but a
frameset/partial build could also do the trick. The L frame would be ideal,
but I'm not averse to an H, either.

I'm located in the greater Seattle area, and happy to drive a bit to meet
sellers in this vicinity. Thanks!

After your collective sizing feedback, plus confirmation from Rivelo and
elsewhere, a 52cm Clem L is definitely in my future. Just a matter of where
to find one! Will create a separate wanted post here, and keep my fingers
crossed. Thanks again to you all for the guidance.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-28 Thread Tully Lanter
I have in fact been leaning toward the Clem L (or a step-through version of
whatever else I might choose). After getting over the less-than-rational
"girl's bike" stigma, I came to appreciate it greatly on previous bikes and
would love to go back to that design!

2017-10-27 Thread Tully Lanter
Paul: great idea to visit Rivelo! The peace of mind plus an excuse to
explore Portland sounds like a solid plan.

Will contact Riv directly in the meantime, and look forward to (presumably)
getting on a Clem in the very near future!

[RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-26 Thread Tully Lanter
Thanks, everyone, for the helpful feedback here. Sounds like a great match
indeed!

Very doubtful I could try one in advance, since there are not yet any Riv
dealers here around Seattle. Will definitely chat with Rivendell about
sizing, since my short-ish legs + long arms combined with Bosco bars makes
for a non-obvious (to me) sizing solution. Thanks again.

[RBW] Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-26 Thread Tully Lanter
Hi, all. I've had my eye on a Clem for a while now, and would appreciate
your take on whether it's a reasonable choice.

   - 5'10", ~85cm PBH, presumably in need of a 52cm frame
   - Fairly short but steep daily commutes (in the Pacific NW., i.e., hilly
   and wet)
   - Occasional Costco runs and the like. Long chainstays are appealing for
the heavy loads and bumpy roads!
   - Random, long-ish distance rides on unpredictable routes. Pavement,
gravel, etc. in varying proportions. Bits of singletrack if I'm so inclined.

I'm drawn to the Clem's relaxed but not extreme geometry, total lack of
back-box components, and (relatively) accessible price point. All in all,
does it sounds like I'm barking up the right tree?

I'm inclined just to take the plunge on a secondhand Clem (if they're out
there...), but since even "cheap" Rivendells aren't cheap, I'd love to hear
your collective thoughts first!
