[RBW] how wide of wheels and tires will a specialized seqoia handle

2024-04-03 Thread bo richardson
there is a steel sequoia I am looking at remotely.
the tires on it say 23mm and look narrow as knife blades
there doesn't seem to be a lot of room beyond that
for wider wheels and tires.

I bet there are 20 people on the list with experience
with this situation

is the sequoia a good solution for someone hoping for
32s or at least 28s?

fenders would be too much to hope for?

thanks for the expertise

Why not just measure standover? Easy enough to measure from the floor
straight up to the middle of the top tube. I would think that would be a
good indicator of fit for the right person. I always try to go with
standover due to BB height, how Rivendell measures, etc. After owning 9+
Rivendell bikes Stand Over and TT length are to 2 figures I want to see.

[RBW] WTB/WTT dirt drop stem

2023-08-29 Thread bo richardson
I found a nice tall Shogun at a garage sale for our pal Matt Eiford. He
got busted up working as a bouncer. I have an albatross bar for his bike
and need a 10 cm dirt drop stem.
I can pay cash but would rather trade for it to keep the cost to him down.
I have some new Shimano clip in pedals, bar end shifters several size small
or medium Portland wool jerseys straight bars.

the jerseys I will be listing as well as a bike I built for someone who got
in a car wreck and has never even seen the bike. this is the queen for a
day section of the sale.

then our buddy Anne is moving a Miata 1000 frame set up as a touring
commuter with Schmidt hub silver shifters VO bars and comparable
throughout. She just bought a horse and we want this bike to pay for a
front quarter of the horse. Different listing for the bikes to
follow.

Thanks for interest

[RBW] brompton in airports and airlines

2021-07-14 Thread bo richardson
what do airlines typically do about bromptons
i intend to travel to europe on condor
if i take my brompton will they accept it in a ikea tyvec bag?
i have the brompton travel case with wheels
but it is heavy and bulky
and a sea anchor after i arrive.

Or does one build a cardboard box around it?

Thoughts experiences advice

Thanks

[RBW] For Sale Redwood 1500

2020-07-15 Thread bo richardson
I am helping a friend sell her Redwood. Her brother bought it and then found a
68 Atlantis frame
and built that up and sold the Redwood to his sister Kim. She upgraded the bike
quite a bit, including a fresh drivetrain
including shifters, Then she found a Rambouillet 66,root beer color and bought
that.

The Redwood is a very nice bicycle and needs to be paroled from the dark
crowded garage.
Paint is naybe9/10. included is a dark green Brooks and the pedals.
Lots of Nitto
check out the ad on craigslist Bellingham/ Seattle.
If those photos interest you enough I can email better ones.
Kim wants1500$ including everything, as it sits.
my phone is dead, but my email works.
thanks for your interest

[RBW] Redwood Rambouillet Atlantis

2020-07-12 Thread bo richardson
Kim is pretty tall. Her Rambouillet is a 66 with custom root beer colored
paint. Her Brothers Atlantis is a 68
and i doubt anyone has ever gotten more pleasure from their first ride on a
bike that fits. However Kim doesnt need to warehouse a second tall Rivendell.
The Redwood really is functionally new with the new drivetrain and top of the
line non moving parts such as bar stem racks etc. It would be a shame for this
bike to go back into storage in an already crowded dark garage...I am 5’6 and
rode the redwood down to Cafe Velow and it rides like a true Rivendell, i.e.
nice.

[RBW] Re: Dark Green B17 Special

2020-05-28 Thread bo richardson
you could get some Fiebing leaher dye
and a brand new saddle, probably honey or natural or lighter green
if they have such
then get the saddle warm, like sunshine warm
apply the dye with the applicator or a paintbrush
then follow with a coat of Obenaufs
to carry the dye into the leather and smooth out any streaks
and darken the leatherLeave it in the sun for a while then buff the saddle
with a soft cotton clotht to
clean dye and oil off the surface
which would be the contact point with your white linen summer pants
it would be best to ride in dark pants well worn till your body heat and
perspiration
and friction polish the saddle up nicely

These are beautiful heavy duty british walking and field shoes from the 1940s.
Leather double oak tanned soles

shipping. I prefer boots.

Blue Rambouillet, 54. Best gear throughout; Paul brakes, Schmidt hub Nitto

[RBW] Re: Things I wish Rivendell still sold..

2018-11-11 Thread bo richardson
i certainly miss my bridgestone jersey. Jack kimmes at Kulshan Cycles pushed me
hard to buy one when they were on sale. Bless his heart.

But the other things I miss more than anything were the Riv/ibex no fly
underpants. i would buy all of them i could afford today.

The reason Toyo is so highly valued is Grant made it such a strong case for
them back in the day. We still believe him.
I have two, my ram and my Atlantis. love them both.

[RBW] wheel build suggestions

2018-11-10 Thread bo richardson
my atlantis was loaned to a friend who was going to do some work on it for me.
a young womman on her cell phone hit him and the bike. he ended up on the hood.
Michael is banged up, mostlyok but wont know for sure till osteo visit on the
20th.
the bike seems mostly ok. Brooks is damaged, tape is damaged, rear wheel is
wrecked.

Am planning shop-based both wheel rebuild. Schmidt front hub.
Rear hub i think is DX, ie shimano 105quality.

is there a price/value upgrade hub i should buy? it will probably be out of my
pocket
I dont want White or Phil expense. LX.?IRD?
Will keep Schmidt front hub.

What about nice silver rims? I usually run 1.5” tires. But possible next owner
may want wider tires?

Thanks

my favorite call out was a couple of summers ago. I was riding from Bellingham
to Seattle
and was depleted in Snohomish. I bought a pint of HaganDasz and went to sit
down off the street by the river.
A rather overweight fellow and his girlfriend were up by the wall quite a ways
away staring a bit. I thought they might be hostiles till the fellow yelled
“nice Rivendell”.

Why do I never learn not to judge people by their appearance?
Boy that was some good ice cream.

[RBW] French aluminium constructeur pre war bike in Friedrichshaven

2017-06-26 Thread bo richardson
i am in germany right now. the woman subletting my little green shack is an
excellent human raising a couple of nice boys.
she is scraping bicycle money together so they can cut car use and so the kids
can
she would be an extraordinary candidate candidate for a little boost..
i could kick a bit.
anyone else with a bit to spare would be welcome to join in.

On another topic i rode down from Ravensburg to Friedrichshaven yesterday
and saw a prewar french aluminium constructeur, almost totally restored.
Fellow named erich has it and is putting on the finishing touches.
Wood rims and everything.
He also has a Singer.
will post photographs if Mein Host can cobble together the tech
was thinking of submitting a story proposal to Jann.
Erich has a few copies of BQ and a friend in Germany with a Riv

2017-06-03 Thread bo richardson
i live in bellingham.
vancouver and the galloping goose is a great ride with a moserate ride type
companion. i haven t found great food in victoria or sidney although the greek
place in the side street in sidney is ok/good enough.

getting a place in Port Townsend and doing day rides is a good option. PT has
good food.

another option might be Mt Vernon and ride up to Edison for freat food at
tweets.

if you rent a car, stay in bellingham and drive to edison and launch from there.
Bellingham is a bigger better town.

if you cycle out old samish from bellingham you dont need a car...

[RBW] I need a new helmet and am hoping for advice

2017-05-08 Thread bo richardson
i am in the market for a mid price range helmet that is not very aero.
not aero. i am not worried about air slamming into the vacuum behind my helmet
at speeds in excess of 12 mph.

polo helmet-ish would be nice. if i could get one with lights built an and
a mirror as part of the helmet that would be perfect.

mirrors on the glasses earpiece bend the glasses out of shape.

i would also buy a pair of glasses with an integrated mirror if that were
available.

does anyone have a suggestion?

thanks so much

i am not too clear why i like the ram so much. it is very comfortable and i
like it for the
50 mile rides we do whenever it isnt snowing up here.
i didnt like the AHH I had with650b wheels either.

it may well be the reason i like the ram is it is the same bike as the Tanguy
touring bicycle I
wore out after only 33years of racing, commuting, touring. After that many life
units together
anything else, even if better, just feels wrong.

Sure glad i didnt go for the second repaint before the BB shell broke on the
Tanguy.

[RBW] What's the longest you have ridden on your Rivendell period?

2016-11-13 Thread bo richardson
i rode bellingham to seattle on my Rambouillet last summer. 125 miles, mostly
on a lovely new trail
from east of mt vernon down to Snohomish.
South of Snohomish to the BG in Bothell was Hiway 9. Might as well have been
freeway but wide shoulders.
Highpoint was a pint of coffee Haggen Daz in Snohomish, down by the River. A
couple of non athletic looking younger people yelled "nice Rivendell" at
me.from the sidewalk.

Athletic triumph was climbing all the way up off the BG at 123rd, without
walking the bike. Kept the front wheel on the pavement most of the way up the
hill.

Ride took 11 hours including ice cream stop. Acceptable time for 65 year old.
