[RBW] Re: Is an Atlantis Worth It?

2024-05-23 Thread Bruce Byker James
I was in a similar situation to you not long ago. I had a heavily
Rivendell-influenced Fuji touring and a Kona Smoke. Last summer I was able
to stop by Rivendell and ride a Clem and an Appaloosa. I loved them both
about the same, except that I'm not crazy about the look of the step-thru
Clem. I get that it's super practical, but I wanted something I would also
love to look at. I lock up my bike in the city a decent amount, so it
couldn't be too flashy. I had some unexpected money, but not very much, so
the Appaloosa was out of range. I started paying close attention to the
used market, came across a Clem H in my size and purchased it in March. I
LOVE it!

Without the unexpected money, I definitely would have kept enjoying the
bikes I already had, but the Clem leveled-up my bicycle riding joy and so
far it's made me spend more time riding.

[RBW] Re: Bar Tape and/or Grips on an Albatross Bar

2024-05-09 Thread James M
I really like to use Oury grips with bar end shifters. First I slice off
the flange at the end, then I orient the grooves that run the length of the
grips so one lines up with the shifter cable. Then I use twine around the
perpendicular grooves t lock the shifter cable into place. Sorry - no
photos, but hopefully it makes sense if you look at a photo of Oury grips.
It works great!

 Hi Leah -

I would generally agree with what Ted said. Riding position and fit are
very important. But I don't think that's the only criteria I would use. I
have ten bikes. Five are Rivs. I have a Custom, Quickbeam, Roadeo, Ram and
Hubbuhubbuh. I find that geometry is important in my riding. Some bikes
 can
be more "twitchy" and/or less stable because of their geometry. Things
 like
trail, head and seat tube angles and bottom bracket drop can affect the
handling and stability of a bike. I don't get hung up on numbers, and
 judge
the handling and stability based on how a bike rides.

All of my Rivs are rock-solid stable and handle exceptionally well. I
know that the low center of gravity, trail and angles contribute to this.
Stability and handling are very important to me because I ride lots of
hills. Going uphill depends on gears, fitness and leg strength. The
stability and handling come into play going downhill. Rivs provide a level
of confidence I don't get on other bikes. You can be sure the bike will go
 where you point it.

About Albastache and Mustache bars - I have five bikes (some of them
Rivs) with Mustache and Albastache bars. I find I can get every bit as low
on Mustache and Albastache bars as on drop bars. The rest of my bikes have
drop bars. The main thing I like about drop bars is riding the hoods. On
drops, I find there are primarily three hand positions: 1) on the hoods,
 2)
on the ramps (slightly farther back than on the hoods) and 3) on the flats
on either side of the stem. I rarely get into the drops. With the
Albastache and Mustache, I find I have more riding positions.

Have fun on your road bike, whatever you get.

 Regards,

 Corwin

Re: [RBW] Re: Rack(s) for Clem

2024-04-19 Thread Bruce Byker James
I have the Axiom Journey on my Clem. I only had to spread the legs a little
to get them on the outside of the seat stay bosses, but I like that
suggestion to put them on the inside. It's really sturdy, especially on the
Clem. I've used it for probably 50 lb. of groceries pretty easily.

If I were buying this rack again, I noticed they now make one with the
spring on top:

from strangers? I'm looking to buy a bike from someone on FB marketplace
and it's not a local sale. So in essence I'm sending over $1,000 to a
stranger on their word. What have ya'll done, if anything, to make sure
you aren't getting scammed (asides from getting a sense of their character
over the phone)?

Some weird rare parts, some not. Heartily patinated racks with
internally wired dynamo lights and handmade wooden fenders (pretty

 ever
having held that light there and the fender steady, as I’m hesitant to

up the back of toptubeless frame.
I’m keeping the grips and the seat, but everything else you see is

 Very rare! Highly collectible?!

Thanks for looking, and happy rolling to all

[RBW] WTB: A Riv in SF on January 3rd. Also looking for some route tips

2023-12-22 Thread James
This may be a long-shot but I figured I would try. I am traveling to SF
this new year and my cousin and I were looking to do an overnight bike
trip, leaving from and returning to SF. I have been a long time lurker and
poster here, and I am wondering if anyone in the SF area would consider
lending me their Rivendell (size 59-65cm) from January 3rd to January 4th.
I have decided not to pack my 63cm AHH for the journey. I am happy to put
down collateral of sorts. It would be a pleasure to do the bike trip on a
Rivendell, and I think any model would do. If this is something you would
consider, please reach out and we can talk on the phone and make sure we
are both comfortable with it.

Secondly, I am open to any route recommendations. We are looking for 30ish
miles each way. Has anyone here camped on or around Pantoll? We haven't
reservations so we would use hiker/biker sites. Any specific trails ya'll
would recommend?

Thank you for considering this proposal and any route tips you may have.

James

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho vs. Nitto Albatross

2023-12-06 Thread James M
Another Choco-moose lover here. I had a set of Ortho bars from the first
run that I sold off. I just couldn't keep them from slipping in the stem
on trails - so much leverage! Switching over to a moose-style bar has been
perfect for me - they ain't going anywhere!

[RBW] Re: Brooks B72 Reissued!

2023-12-06 Thread James M
I have a B72 on my Hunq - I 3D printed (well, had an online service do
it) a 2-rail saddle adapter in glass-filled nylon, using this pattern
- https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3143229. It's going on 2 years and has
worked great. Awesome that Brooks is reissuing this though and making an
adapter!

[RBW] FS: Velo Orange Saddle Bag and 2 piece lugged stem

2023-10-12 Thread James
Hello fellow steel-bike lovers
I'm selling these two items as a pair.

*The bag: *I bought it new, used it 5ish times, and it has been in my
basement for 6 months where it proceeded to get a little moldy. I haven'd
done anything about it, but I imagine some vinegar scrub would get it right
off.

*The stem: *Got this in a trade. It's a 2-piece. The "vertical" but says
nitto on it. The "horizontal" but says "J.T" in tiny print. No other
markings. I don't know who makes it. Dimensions are in photos. 25.4
clamp diameter. The bolt to clamp down on the handle bars is not included
because, well, I can't find it.

I'd like to sell to the same person so I can save on shipping. Assuming
shipping will be $25 I am asking $100 for them both. Shipped. If that's
unreasonable, shoot me an offer.

[RBW] Sizing Upon a Clem?

2023-09-27 Thread james karlin
Hi everyone, I'm looking to get into the Rivendell world with one of their
complete Clems. I measured my pbh at 90, which puts me pretty squarely in
the 59cm range. I wondering if any of y'all have enjoyed sizing
up--according to the website, the 64cm would be doable for me. I'm just
wondering if it'll be *good*, or if it'll be a gamble. 64cm just seems like
a lot more bike than I'm used to!

(I'm currently on a 58cm Nishiki International for everything. It's a great
road bike, but I'm looking for something with more commuting, utility, and
trail capability.)

Sorry if this has already been addressed somewhere else in the group.

[RBW] Tire advice for my Toyo homer/max tire size

2023-09-14 Thread James
My Barlow-pass tires blew a sidewall the other day and I'm in the market.
I mostly ride pavement but take it on train and across fields on occasion.
I have my eyes set on the Rene Herse 700x44 Manastash, the Soma Cazadero,
the Rene Herse Hurricane Ridge, or Schwalbe G-One R or Overland.

Anyone got any experience with these tires they can speak to? Do ya'll
know what size a 700c Toyo homer accommodates? Not sure a knobby 44 would
fit...

Re: [RBW] Ebike Clem

2023-07-19 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,
I had our Clem converted to an Ebike with the Bafabg mid motor kit. 750W
system. We got the rack mounted battery. I did it for my 85 year old dad, who
only rides ebikes now. He found it too hard to get on and off the Clem and
stuck with his small-wheeled ebike.
I’ve ridden it several times.
1. The added weight does not affect the bike handling.
2. I generally pedal faster than the motor on the flats, so it is still a
workout
3. It is fun to go up steep hills at 15mph.
4. The wires and motor hanging off the bike kills my OCD, its ugly and my was
done by a professional.
5. You have to be careful when making tight turns, have the motor off or in the
lowest setting, else the bike will throw you.

My first build was a ridiculously powerful rear-hub Clem, Grant rode it!
Then I did a few with even more ridiculously powerful mid-drives, those

upload an imgur link with a few pics to spark some interest. Or maybe the
picture loads for everyone else and that's not necessary.

Sending this one back into the world. I bought it from J J, also tried it
on once, and also decided it wasn't for me. It's a cool hat though. I
even tried to convince my teenager that it would look good on her, but to
no avail. Selling for the same $58 (shipped) that I bought it for. Photo
below is a snip from J J's thread, I'll post a real photo tonight.

[RBW] FS: Castelli skully cap and vest

2023-04-12 Thread James
I was gifted some cycling apparel that I don't anticipate wearing, so I'm
moving them along.

Castelli Skully Cap, orange, and a Castelli Squadra Vest, XL. The skinny
cap doesn't lost a size but when I buy a hat I buy a L or XL. Both are
brand-new with tags. The skully retails for $25 and the vest retails for
$60. Selling both for $45 shipped.

Re: [RBW] Re: Let's talk about the All Rounder

2023-03-23 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,
Well that is interesting. I had the impression they hadn’t done the rack mounts
earlier, from the conversations I had with them when placing my order. Perhaps
it was a rare request back then.
Anyways - I am happy the mounts are more or less standard now a days, they are
so useful!

That green bike is very nice.

Re: [RBW] Re: Let's talk about the All Rounder

2023-03-22 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,
When I ordered my custom Rivendell in 2002 I requested rack mounts on the fork
blades. They hadn’t done this before. I had to send a drawing showing what I
wanted. They agreed and Curt Goodrich made my frame. Joe Stark was supposed to
be my builder, but he went of the reversvation before he started on it. I met
Curt a few times and I’m super happy with his work.

So, front rack mounts were not part of the normal Rivendell catalog 20 years
ago.

Yes, RJ the Bike Guy is great.  Especially when he’s making his own tools, like the homemade bottom bracket thread chaser, the homemade headset press… it takes some of the mystery out of these processes.  On Feb 20, 2023, at 6:58 PM, Garth wrote:Yep, three cheers for not underestimating your abilities ! [RBW] WTT: My 62 Appaloosa for a 60cm Platypus

2023-02-12 Thread James
Anyone in Asheville, NC or surrounding area want to consider this trade. I
have never ridden a Platty, so dong a test ride is the first order of
business to make sure it feels right. My appaloosa is silver and cream and
in great shape. I want to keep all my components. Really just testing the
waters on this one. Anyone local have a 60 Platy I can test ride?

Those Breezer seat sandwiches are so hard to find. I did, however, find a
3D printing plan for one that someone put on Thingiverse. I had Shapeways
print it in glass-filled nylon, and it's been working pretty well with the
B-72 on my Hunq.

Looks like mounting these with negative rise could be something like a
wider Choco bar, with a little less sweep, which could be good for trail
riding. (I love the ChocoMoose on my Hunq, but would be nice to be able to
lean into the bars a bit more off road.)

Hi,
I believe Jobst road bikes made by Peter Johnson of north California. Peter’s

seen his frames without paint, his craftsmanship was without peers.

Re: [RBW] Re: NorCal Cycling

2022-12-20 Thread James Warren
When a Mason-Dixon line needs to be established in CA, it'll be called the
Safeway-Vons line.

Quiz: for any major north-south freeway or highway, what are the two cities
that straddle the Safeway-Vons line?

Related question: King City: which store do they have?

Related Cliff Claven Trivia: when I was a kid growing up in Los Angeles and
San Diego suburbs, Vons and Safeway were two different stores. In 1989 they
merged, and all of our Southern California Safeways got renamed Vons. So
many of our suburban shopping centers ended up with two Vons's as anchors
on either end when it used to be Safeway at one end and Vons at the other.

I'm also totally open to going somewhere and doing day rides from a hotel

Mt. Tam, Mt. Diablo, etc... which could be cool.

What are the differences between Hunqapillar generations? I have a July

think getting 2.2" tires on the back would be dicey. Did the green
generation of the frame have bigger clearance? Longer wheelbase?

the Hunq but I'd be surprised if they were. Only GP knows what tubes cost
what. Plus the fancy lugs. I have no idea about the Hunqa frames lugs but
the Bombas sure are fancy, if that's you're thing. I don't ride a Riv for
the rep/status or the paint jobs or even the looks, I have two because
 they
fit me well and they're steel. I'm outside the bounds of most every stock
Riv bike and yet those two worked(Susie is the other). That's about it.
 I'm
 all for Practicability.

While the Hunqapillar was touted as a Bomba replacement, it was only
that in category as the frame itself was totally different in dimensions
and sizes, not to mention the diagonal tube which still looks odd to me.

Pretty cool - but another $250 for the shift lever. Still great to see
components like this being made!

[RBW] The Bombadil on Ebay

2022-12-06 Thread James
I'm so curious who bought the beautiful Bombadil that was on ebay
recently. The frame only, in a beautiful yellow, with the lng diagonal
tube.I've never seen one like it and I think if I ever get my appaloosa
custom painted I will go with a bright yellow
