if you are interested in any of them, I can send you pics and measurements.

Re: [RBW] Recommendation for a modern mountain bike?

2020-09-21 Thread kim young
Hi Michael,

Analog has a write-up on the Unit. (And what a great price!) They are
always worth a browse - they have so many great bikes and ideas and
randomly edifying things about the Melvin’s, etc

I’ve got the surly ecr. It can tackle anything and is very comfortable- but
it is such a tank. If I have to carry it over a stream or a log or
whatever, it feels like heaving a boat anchor.

Jeff Jones bikes seem so interesting.
I’m curious to try one of those.

And Cjel Mone is building some gorgeously impressive frames out of his
bread truck. I think (?) he is in the old post office in Silver City now.

[RBW] about rapid-rise derailleurs

2020-08-15 Thread kim young
I have a question about the low-normals. I know riv loves the RR’s, but I
hesitate.

I know that if the cable breaks- they default to the low gear. And that is
brilliant, because its still easy to get home.

But if my chain snaps, then the cage and whole mechanism - like its gonna
clam up without its chain and then the cage might go into the big gear and
possibly over into the spokes (if that makes any sense.)

Is this a legit concern or am I just being paranoid?

Thanks for reading :)

Re: [RBW] Cork grips shellac - clear vs. amber

I’ve used these. They save my wrists on long rides.
Not sure how much cork they have in them, because they are kind of
rubbery-but they don’t dry out.

Re: [RBW] Re: Help! Chain/tire rub problem with my Susie build

2020-06-26 Thread kim young
Hi David.

I was wondering with the long stays and chain if there isn’t going to be a
lot of chain flop when I go off-road?

I wasn’t planning on going bigger then 2.5 when I ordered, but I had
wondered about chain grab. I was going to use a shark tooth anyway, just
in case.

—-I had asked about the options if I ever wanted to go wider re: how to
build for that, grant sent me this info:

The standard thing-to-do is to use the 2.5 on drive side. We haven't set up
a ShimanoBranded crank, but the Silver 2pc is made to the same std as
Shimano. We've had 2.Eights Teravail tires with single rings, and Silver
normal triples and the chain barely clears the tire (I've ridden it in low
gear). So a 2.6 should be better. But still, a single ring will have more
clearance.

The thing is, the close chain is a problem only on bumpy downhills, when
you climb in low and forget to shift out of it for the ride down. Then, the
tire tread can brab the chain and pull it down. If there's a
chainwidth-or-less clearance btw tire and chainstay, it can jam up. You
won't skid. because the chain can't lock up the wheel. It'll just make
noise and drag.

BUT the Hillibikes have tons of clearance, even with a 2.8, so the chain
can't get jammed. I haven't pulled a chain below the chainstay, but I bet
it would just pop up and out again. I mean, what else could it do?

Thank you for this conversation.

Tube or tubeless that has been my question!
(IMHO)
there’s gonna be infrastructure one way or the other. w tubeless for me i
was intimidated due to the learning curve.

But I do like learning and once I got through some of that, tubeless isn’t
any more complicated than learning how to patch, etc. It’s just different.
I have bikes running both.

The thing with tubeless is that IF I get a flat I feel like it’s gonna be
more trouble (maybe due to inexperience. )
Yet I don’t get flats with tubeless- (I know it can happen, just that I
haven’t yet in a year or more ).
I have lost a lot of air a few times, so that my tubeless go squishy. (I
learned the old frame pump won’t inflate enough. Now I have a lezyne pump
I bring w.)

With the tube tires and where I ride, I am flat or slowly leaking - at
least once a month. So there’s gonna be a flat, but I know how to fix it.
It’s easier and I‘m ready. I just have to do so way more often. What i have
to be prepped for with tubes is the probability that I need to be.

There’s hardly ever flats with tubeless - so it’s the differential in the
maintenance reality of the two systems that I think about.

(W tubeless I fill up w stans no-flow whenever the tubeless won’t hold
their air overnight. I have the m12 makita portable mini compressor. It’s
smaller than a 6pack. I use it for the cars and wheelbarrow tires too.
But I don’t Re-fill my tubeless that much more often than my tube tires. )

Right on tim. It’s nice you are enjoying your new location and helping w.
that event.
There are people who would crew for it. I am sure you could manage but will
be better if you have some backup.
I will put out an email.

(think I’m on the main thread here. I will
write you directly for details.)

2020-03-04 Thread kim young
tim- i used to work on lots of bikes with homeless people when I lived in
Tucson. (IMHO:) don’t worry - you are more than qualified. People are just
so happy to have any kind of assist with their bikes at all.

Is it just you doing the bike part of the event?I could put you in touch
with some local people who could help.
