Jim,
Try some *Schwalbe G-One Speed
*' tires with
Schwalbe's Extra Light tubes. Expensive, but from my experience with diff
tires (from road to knobby) on my 59 Clem H, they are simply excellent.
About as light as you'll get, fast, grippy, no flats yet. If you go with
the 2-inchers, they'll fit very nicely under the VO fluted fenders.[image:

[RBW] FS: As-new 62 MIT Atlantis Frameset - Custom Hunq Green

2020-09-27 Thread tc
I bought this new from Riv in December 2019 almost as soon as I saw it on
their Instagram account (here's the original post
),
but don't see myself ever building it up. It has the $350 custom Hunq
green (AKA "Jay's Green") paint job, done by Rick Stefani of D I
believe...but since Riv didn't upcharge for the paint, I won't either, plus
I'm knocking $100 off of an essentially new frameset.

Sale includes frame and fork, plus the stock headset and bottom bracket
that came with it.

I will pack it up nice and tight, and ship it to you via either BikeFlights
or ShipBikes, insured (continental U.S. only).

I've never mounted anything on it; it's just been sitting in the garage in
the box. The pictures are from Riv's site. It still looks just like
this. If you're a serious buyer I'll be happy to answer specific questions
and take additional specific pictures if you'd like.

$1400 + shipping + insurance.

Thanks,
Tom

[RBW] Re: 1x drivetrain question

2020-03-23 Thread tc
My research turned up these suggestions to help chain on and 'ensmoothen'
your shifting, esp. if you'll be going over bumpy terrain:

   - Use a narrow-wide chain ring; the teeth profile grabs at the chain
better than a traditional ring's teeth. (Or, use a chain guide ... but you
might not like the looks of it...and it kinda negates the clean look of not
   having a FD anyway.)
   - Use a clutch rear derailleur to help keep tension on the chain at all
   times.

[RBW] Tires for Toyo Fatlantis?

2020-02-01 Thread tc
Tom,
I really like the Nano 2.1. I have them on my 64 Toyo Atlantis. They are
especially nice if you’ll be riding on some pavement and hard pack as well as
the trails you mention. They have a center thread that rolls fast and pretty
quietly on pavement. The edge has great grip, without any abrupt surprises as
you lean into corners. Mine are mounted with tubes on Synergy rims, which
creates a nice rounded profile.

[RBW] Re: Thinking about cycling for me in the future....

2020-02-01 Thread tc
Paul,
I don't think you're overreacting. Getting a spinner sounds like a good
plan to me, because you yourself thought of it, and it must feel like the
right thing for you at this point in time! Everyone has their own measure
for 'safety', and you're certainly entitled to yours. I choose not to ride
more than a mile radius from my house on the roads because it doesn't feel
safe. I also have 2 cyclist friends who've been in serious accidents.
Though I've lost touch with one of them, the other still rides, but only in
large groups, and more so on paved greenways these days. Speaking of
greenways, we're fortunate in Raleigh to have over 100 miles of paved
greenways; they're building more, and connecting more, each year. It's so
nice not to have to worry about traffic; you can enjoy the views, the
bridges over water, and wildlife that you just don't see that often on the
roads (or have the opportunity to pay attention to since you're trying not
to get hit). I wasn't clear from your post whether you have greenways
available and you just choose not to ride them, or, they're not available.
If the former, that might be a nice way to slip back into riding. Whatever
you choose, best wishes!

[RBW] Re: Ride length on Jitensha/Map type bars? Updated my Redwood.

2020-01-29 Thread tc
David,
I would say "No" to all-day riding with the Jitensha bar. It's not wide
enough, nor does it have a grip area large enough to afford multiple hand
positions, at least comfortable ones.

My recommendations for non-drop bars for hours of riding and multiple hand
positions would be, in order:
1. Albatross. See this excellent video: https://youtu.be/pGokAt6XAi0 (I
set up my Sam with extra long cork grips and moved the brake levers up as
he suggests ... really nice!)
2. Wavie
3. Ahearne+Map

If you're into more of a funky looking, but supremely comfortable and
functional bar, then the Jones butted loop H-bar, which you can get in
silver if that matters:
https://www.jonesbikes.com/jones-h-bar-butted-loop-aluminum/

...pick up the phone, order a Legolas in size 62, color xyz, and it’d be ready
in maybe 9 months. I’d get a cool bike, and Riv would make a profit. They could
use that profit to run their business.

What is not realistic about that scenario?

Ford sells really cool Shelby Mustangs that cost out the wazoo. At the same
time, they sell a gazillion F-150s with white paint, vinyl seats, and little
base model steel wheels. They make a profit on both. They have customers for
both, so they make both.

[RBW] Re: Legolas Mystique: If Riv offered a limited time only, prepaid Legolas run, would you buy one?

2020-01-26 Thread tc
I think that there’s middle ground to be had here.

If Riv can find a builder that will make a frame that people are willing to pay
for, and provide them with some profit (enough to make it worth it), then this
is a win-win. My understanding is that already-designed frames with blueprints
are simply waiting on a (quality) frame builder who has the bandwidth to make
them. The “market” will decide if it’s worth it.

If I decided that I wanted a new Legolas (or whatever the new name would be), I
assume the price would be somewhere between a Rodeo and a custom. It should not
cost as much as a custom because the design was done long ago. It’s a matter of
picking a size and colors.

I’d call Riv, ask them to pick up the phone,

2020-01-24 Thread tc
Thanks for the offer, Bill, but I’m good. Given Riv’s reply last year re: the
Hunq, I started looking for a used one. Took a while to find one in good
condition and sized right, but find one I did. Joe Bell has had it in his
paint queue for a couple of months.

As for the Legolas, I was just curious.

And, as this thread has proven, there’s a lot of curiosity out there, and
misinformation, about what can be ordered. The list of orderable bikes isn’t
large — at least not so large that Riv couldn’t maintain such an accurate list
on their web site. They are in business to sell bikes; hard to see why they
wouldn’t make that as easy as possible.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Stem Chronicles: Will this get me injured?

2020-01-23 Thread tc
Keep in mind that swapping out your current 5cm stem for an Analog
"Tanglefoort w(Right)" 0cm stem I mentioned above gets the bars 2" closer
to you. So, you might not need your bar any higher at that point. The
w(Right) stem has a 225mm shaft height, so, though I'm not sure of its max
height line (you should ask them how high it can safely go), you could
hopefully get them up at least as high as your current stem. I don't think
there's another option for you stem-wise...I mean, 0mm is pretty much the
shortest :)

Now, handlebar-wise, you DO have more options to get your grip higher than
even a Bosco. Search for "Cruiser" handlebars. Nitto, Wald, Trek/Electra,
Sunlite, and other companies make a wide variety of "sit up and beg" bars.

Leah,
This analog stem might work. They will have it in 0mm and 30mm reach versions.
Will need shims since it’s a 31.8 handlebar clamp, and your Bosco at the clamp
has a 25.4mm diameter. They can get you the right shims.

@aeroperf, Nice wine holder! A little classier than a king cage, isn't
it. I guess the whole Legolas thing, as you point out, seems to be so
niche that it wasn't viable to offer en masse like the MIT Sam, Atlantis,
Clem, -- even if the number of lugs were reduced, etc.. I, too, have
gotten to the point that it would likely not be a comfortable bike for me,
either. But whenever "Legolas" is mentioned, it's like bears to honey
around here. I would have thought that Legolas (or whatever its new name
would be) would be offered at a price point like the Rodeo, which is still
significantly less expensive than a custom. I guess the business case just
isn't there after all.

2020-01-18 Thread tc
Thinking out loud here, I propose that if Riv continued to offer these 5
frames, *some* of their financial worries would be diminished. Accepting the
fact that I’ve enjoyed 2 glasses of Frank Family 2016 Lewis Vineyard Chardonnay:
1. Original Atlantis geo
2. Hunq
3. Legolas
4. Rodeo
5. Sam. Who on earth, who’s been right-sized, does not love this bike??
Lordy, it is so wonderfully versatile.. Canti, likely would win. OK. But
sidepull is just as awesome!

I don’t care if the former Legolas is renamed. How silly to abandon an
apparently bucket list design because of a copyright or trademark name issue.
That’s why I’m wondering what my original post asked ... what’s the big deal?
If it’s a great design, why not continue to offer it?

I now have a 2016 62 *sidepull *Sam, my fav of all 3. The Sam oddly feels
more maneuverable, yet stouter to me, but not not slow (chainstays?
trail?). I haven't tried the canti Sam. The sidepull version works fine
for me with 44 Snoq Pass -- plenty of tire for that bike, though no
fenders. I believe the sidepull version has the shortest chainstays, if
that makes a diff to you. You might be able to find a bargain on a
sidepull Sam these days.

[RBW] Advice Needed: Tires

2020-01-14 Thread tc
Steve,
What width rim? How wide a tire does your frame allow you to go?

My quick ranking, having used them in the 38-60mm range:

1. Barlow (38 std casing). Most supple - like butter, quietest, easiest to
mount.

2 G-One (2” and 2.4”) second most supple, very slight hum on pavement, but not
objectionably so.

3. Sport Contact II (42) (I know you didn’t mention). Least supple, but more so
than marathons, least expensive, quiet, fast for money.

I should note my experiences are running with tubes.

[RBW] Re: Velocity Quill experiences?

2020-01-12 Thread tc
I'm no wheel builder, but it's interesting that VO recommended spoke
tension for the Voyager of 110 kgf, and not to exceed 115. I'm guessing
there's no universal "never go below, or above" a certain tension, and that
different rims will spec different tensions. But does anyone 'in the know'
(Peter?) have an opinion as to whether a rim that spec's 115kgf or lower is
in any way lesser quality?

Probably much ado about nothing, but reading this sentence, "High quality
wheels generally have drive side rear spoke tension anywhere from 130 kgf
on up to 155 kgf." in this article

made me wonder.

[RBW] Re: Velocity Quill experiences?

2020-01-12 Thread tc
Anyone tried the relatively new $85 VO Voyager rim? I'm not familiar with
the quality of VO rims in general. This rim hits the gap between Atlas and
Cliffhanger. Comes in 26", 650b, 700c, for 38mm to 2.4" (61mm) tire, 638g
(700c) and 597g (650b), stainless eyelets, tubeless compatible, rim or disc
brake.

The Quill is much more expensive -- yet is 1/3 lb lighter (insignificantly
so for me).
The Atlas is very slightly more expense, but not tubeless compatible
(insignificant for me, so far), and can't fit as wide a tire.
The Cliffhanger gives up a little on the narrow tire size range, but can
take a slightly wider tire, is insignificantly heavier, and very slightly
more expensive.

[RBW] Re: Tires

2020-01-10 Thread tc
Hey Carla,
I've have a set of Jon Bon Pass ELs (35mm) on my Roadini ...Awesome, light,
quiet, grippy, no flats ... and very cushy, zippy. Like they're not
there. I have about 500 mi on them. Highly recommend.

I have a set of Snoqualmie Pass (44mm) standard casing tires on my wife's
58 Sam, on my 62 Sam, and now on my 59 Clem (on the Clem, replacing 2.25
Schwalbe G-One Speeds (also nice), so I can fender it). Awesome, really
cushy, no flats.  I had almost gotten used to how velvet smooth they are;
then my wife rode them the first time (after the stock Kendas - yuck) --
and she was amazed at the difference in comfort.

The 'basketball tire' (Continental Sport Contact II) that Riv sells is
actually a very nice tire for the money. I had them on my SimpleOne for a
while. If that's your price range, I'd go for it.

I have used the Nitto big (rear) rack on my Toyo Atlantis and have hauled 30
lbs of groceries like it wasnt’t there. I don’t know if it’s aesthetics or

Carry heavy stuff on rear racks, and most Rivs designed to carry some amount of

[RBW] Velocity Quill experiences?

2020-01-03 Thread tc
I now have a 62 MIT Atlantis frame. I'm gonna order a new Rich-built
wheelset for it. Velocity Quill? Cliffhanger?

I'm leaning toward Quill because they fit a wider range of tires, esp.
narrower ones in case I want to go crazy and fender it. Also, Quills are
lighter by a pound, seem to be strong enough (I'm not gonna tour with heavy
loads). Jan's article, "Myth 18: Wide Tires Need Wide Rims
"
started me on this path. A chart in that article says a 21mm inside width
(what the Quill has) should be able to handle a 64mm ((!) tire ... though
Velocity recommends up to 47...which seems very conservative to me. I'm
running Dyads and 2.1 Nano's on my Toyo Atlantis...super combination.

I won't be putting a 64 tire on a Quill, but will think strongly about the
55 Antelope Hills. Also have some 29x2 G-One Speeds to consider.

Anyone have any experience with Quills?

Thanks,
Tom

I’ve also read where some folks keep a small piece of rigid foam in their bike
bag to wedge between tire and fender to equalize the “pressure” exerted on the
fender by the 1Up bar. Quotes around “pressure” because you don’t need that
much...certainly not enough to damage a fender. Nice idea, but I never had to
use it.

Um...well, *Sparky *should be able to whir there on it's own, or, it can go
on a car top rack, so you really only need a 3-bike hitch mount rack! Hey,
thinkin' outside the box here, only because I want you to experience the
relative nirvana that is the 1Up system. Do you take 4 bikes more often
than 1, 2, or 3? And how often does Sparky come along when you use a rack?

Sounds like it's a mute point for you now, but for others reading, many
people have tried and liked the 1Up fender cushions, so I guess it's
personal taste. I suppose if you had really weak fender struts, or struts
that aren't tightened properly, that might be a problem. But I know
first-hand that SKS fenders and struts are fine with the fender cushions
... and they're probably the 'weakest', compared to Honjo or VO or Berthoud
fender struts.

[RBW] Narrow-wide 1x chain ring question

2020-01-01 Thread tc
I'm contemplating a 1x8/9 setup, and cannot seem to find a narrow-wide
chain ring that meets all of these criteria:

   - 36+ teeth
   - 5-bolt 110 bcd (not deal breaker, but nice to reuse existing arms)
   - Fits non-direct mount, square taper JIS crank arms, like the Silver or
Sugino brand cranks many of of us have already
   - 8/9/10 spd chain compatibility
   - Silver color (anodized or polished)
   - Good quality

Hopefully some of you have searched for something like this before and
found it.

Sugino doesn't seem to make narrow-wide rings, or at least Google
Translator and their pictures lead you to believe that.

Raceface & Wolftooth don't make this in silver. As an aside: Wolftooth
recommends using a 10spd chain in 1x9 setups so the (slightly tighter)
chain holds their ring better.

VO doesn't seems to offer a narrow-wide ring.

Hope doesn't offer this in silver.

I love White Ind. cranks and rings, but they're direct-mount arms.

Some company could fill a niche here, I'm thinking...

I have a Sugino XD3BX-701D
 46/36 on order,
which I may end up using for a 2x setup instead, but wanted to see if any
of you have found a 1x crank and narrow-wide ring per above.

Thanks for your thoughts, and Happy New Year!
Tom

Leah,
1up makes a “Fender Cushion”, which is a piece of cylindrical foam, wrapped in
a soft material which attaches with Velcro. The Fender Cushion wraps around the
little bars that ordinarily press into your tire. Works fine, though you
could make these things yourself with foam pipe insulation for a fraction of
the $13 they charge.

[RBW] Re: First post, first Riv, first ride

2019-12-28 Thread tc
Welcome! You've got an awesome Sam there...big tires to boot :) I've
never seen the Crust Shaka bar mounted. With the flyout angle, it looks
like it slots in between the Salsa Cowbell and Cowchipper.

I also started my Riv journey with a Sam, which my wife stole upon her
first ride (she's tall, long femurs, and had never (NEVER) found a bike
that fit her like a glove like that Sam did - and still does. So I got
another Sam for me, but ended up selling it because it was really too
small, and I also had a 61 Roadini, which was an overlap situation; I
could've made it work, but it would not have looked like I wanted it to.
But I really missed that burnt orange color. Riv put the remaining
sidepull Sams on sale, so now I have a 62, and love it.

Good luck - they're super bikes, as I'm sure you've discovered by now.

Thank you, Marty - it's a wonderful tradition that I, and obviously others,
look forward to! Your generous gift is a reminder to me of all the
thoughtfulness and painstaking detail that goes into every Riv, down to the
headbadge. To think of all the effort on every bike, times 30+ beautiful
designs, is really something. Sweating the details, even if it's harder and
takes longer ... concerns about manufacturing... suppliers' rising costs
... all in the midst of where the industry is going, and continuing to
knock it out of the park is nothing short of amazing. I know I speak for
many here when I say that we are so lucky to experience all that is
Rivendell!

Complete bike for $1900, plus whatever packing and shipping costs.
Includes everything shown in the pic's except for:
- Saddle
- Grips
- Pedals

I really want to sell the complete bike; but, depending on interest, could
do F/F/H/BB too, or something in between if the complete isn't getting any
interest after a week or so.

Pic's here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/quLo3M3sRzkLEk987

I bought this pre-owned 1x8 setup from a list member this year to dip my
toe into the 650b world. Though it's a beautiful bike, there's not enough
of a difference to me, compared to my 700c bikes, to justify keeping it. I
know there are some big Saluki fans out there, so hopefully someone will
get it and appreciate it.

The paint is gorgeous; it is almost free of defects. Some very tiny
blemishes, but you have to get right up on it to see'em. When I got it, I
was taken aback by how well it had been taken care of.

Standover, with the current set of wheels and tires, is 86cm as measured
from the ground, straight up from the crank center.

Saddle height shown in the pic's is 79, from center of crank to the top of
the saddle, along a line straight up through the seatpost.

Build details:
I've put only about 50 miles on this bike since I bought it. Willing to
make *minor *changes (include or not include) some components, depending on
your needs. Let me know what you're thinkin'.

Components I bought new for this bike (~$300; 50 miles on them all):
- Ahearne+Map 610mm bar ($60)
- Tallux 120mm stem ($76)
- Rene Herse Babyshoe Pass 650bx42 tires ($140)
- Schwalbe tubes ($32)

Components on the bike when I bought it:
- Paul canti levers (green)
- Paul neo retro cantis (green spring nuts)
- Paul moon units (green)
- Suntour XC shifter
- Sugino RD 48t crank
- Synergy wheelset (both 32h). Sunrace front hub, Deore rear hub. 8spd
cassette.
- XT rear derailleur. No front derailleur.

Thanks,
Tom

[RBW] Re: Aero Albatross

2019-12-03 Thread tc
Aaron, if you haven't already, you might try flipping your Albatross, and
possibly switching out your stem for something a tad longer. I found that
a flipped Albatross still allows a close-enough grip position (raise your
stem a little higher than when you run it in the normal position...or use a
dirt drop), but to your point, also offers the more aggressive position
when you move up into the curves to crank it. And the downward slanted
curves of a flipped Albatross are actually very comfortable ... more so
than when not flipped.

[RBW] Thin Gripster alternatives?

2019-12-03 Thread tc
I have Shimano Saint PD-MX80 studded platform pedals on all my bikes. Thin,
strong, not too big, not too small, and the brushed silver and black goes with
everything. Amazon sells them for $96.

[RBW] Another Cork Grip Idea -- And A Devo Flashback :)

2019-11-30 Thread tc
Thought I'd share a slightly customized cork grip idea that, so far, works
well.

First, thanks to Luis Garcia (making longer cork grips) for the reminder
about the Dan Stroud video (Albatross bar more useful if brake levers moved
far forward).

I used grooved, constant diameter Meisha's cork grips for bar-end shifters,
plus a small section I sawed off of another pair of flared cork grips using
a mitre box and hack saw with a fine blade. After installing the brake
levers as far forward as I could before the curve of the bar, I slipped the
small flared grip section on first, with the bigger flare end facing the
front to act as a hand stop. I was careful to saw the rear (smaller) end
of the small section at a point where its diameter matched that of the main
(Meisha's) grip. Also, I cut this section a little long so that I could
use various sandpaper grits to hone the end flat and smooth. Even so,
there was a tiny gap, so I did a single wrap of twine in the tiny gap to
act as chinking, which adds a very small but cool detail I think.

This time I remembered to rotate each bar-end shifter so that the levers
flare outward a bit to better align with the natural position of my
arms/wrists/hands when I'm riding. Of course this requires that you play
around with the angle and twist the grips so that the groove is more
outward ... before the grip adhesive dries.

Lastly, some of you probably know that the handlebar twine wrapping
technique that Riv advocates is known as a form of "whipping", as in
whipping the end of a rope so the ends don't fray. This time I remembered
to whip my grips with the knot on the inside of the grip (unlike the Riv
demo video) so that the small knot/bump is not on the outside of the grip,
and is in a spot that doesn't rub anywhere. As I was looking around for
different whipping techniques, I came across these 2 videos demonstrating
whipping used as an accent in fine furniture building, as well as the more
typical use as a means to bind rope ends ... thought you'd enjoy:

Riv video: Cork Grips Installation

That's it! And now, in the immortal words of *Devo*, go forth and "Whip
it. Whip it good ." (sorry.)

[RBW] Re: New vs. old Homer geometry, ride characteristics

2019-11-24 Thread tc
Luis, thanks for posting. I'm gonna try this extra cork grip idea. I had
seen this video by Dan Stroud a while ago,
where he moved his brake levers fwd of the 'normal' position for the
Albatross bar. (But he extended his grip area with what looks like small
sections of ESI grips). Thanks for the reminder!

[RBW] FS: New Brooks C19 All Weather Carved - Black

2019-11-21 Thread tc
$75 + CONUS shipping.

Mounted only for a 10 min test ride, after which I removed it, having
determined the B17 Imperial is a better fit for me.

I have included pics of the black C19 for sale, below, beside a brown B17
Imperial (*which isn't for sale*) to show the differences, since most here
are familiar with the B17 size and shape:
