Thanks Patrick.
I also miss Deacon Jones posts and pictures. He certainly has a significant
skill in capturing stunning pics riding in the Pikes Peak area.

He still has a website I think under Deacon Patrick. A search should pop it up.

Cool pics and historical perspective Philip!

I've ridden up and down Swiss Avenue many times and always enjoy it.

Also your Platypus looks terrific!

Yeah, the heat and humidity. It does get to me also.

A break this week with slightly cooler temps...thank the Lord.
I measured 1.1 inches of rain yesterday and last night.

[RBW] Bizarre Winter Weather

2021-02-22 Thread True Golden
Over the years I rode in the Hotter N' Hell Hundred 14 times.

It's probably been around 10 to 12 years since I've done it.

Several years I rode it on my 1999 Riv custom before not knowing any better and
listenening to lighter is better rhetoric and sold it.

I usually rode the 100K but 4 different times I rode the full 100 miles.

All but two times I camped the night b4 in a tent there at the hosting center.

I always enjoyed the big bike gear show during the event.

Thinking back I must have been a bit crazy to sweat overnight in a tent and
then get up and ride that far in late August heat.

I still remember the sound of dozens and dozens of tandem riders passing in a
group. First time I heard those tandems coming I thought a train was about to
run over me.

Trying the HHH now I would probably have a heat stroke and cash in my chips.

A 40 to 50 mile ride at a slow pace is about my max these days.

Heck, even back in my early 40's when I first tried it my best was only a 16
mph average.

I recall a couple church buddies that were very fit back then went up and did a
flat 5 hours/ 20mph avg. for the 100 and I was in awe of that.

Safe riding in whatever temps...

who rode 20 miles today on my
Sam Hillbourne in wonderful 60 degree temps.

[RBW] Bizarre Winter Weather

2021-02-22 Thread True Golden
Patrick,

My area, not for from the northern portion of Dallas County, got around 4 to 5
inches of snow one day and then around another inch 2 days later I think it was.

It's a massive state.
The Panhandle and northern parts tend to have more snow and colder temps over
the typical winters.

The further south you go typically multiple inches of snow is more rare
although it does happen.

Our previous record was 11 inches 10 years ago in 2011 also in February.
I distinctly remember that storm.

The reports I saw showed even the Houston area received several inches last
week.

My understanding was it wasn't the amount of snow but the week-long frigid
temps and loss of power to several million causing so many problems.

Typically when we get snow a day or two later it's all melted with increasing
temps.

It's a running joke about Texas weather as Phillip alluded to that if you don't
like it wait a day or two and it will change.

My wife and I rode at 70 degrees yesterday. I was in short sleeves.

Plus with the rarity of snow and ice many here are terrible drivers on roads
with either snow or ice.

There seems to me to be many aggressive drivers not allowing for road
conditions.

Also the greater Dallas-Ft Worth area
is growing phenomenally with ever increasing traffic and demands on the power
grid and water resources.

Reports indicate the area is nearing 8 million population if it hasn't already
surpassed it.

Other cities like Austin, San Antonio and Houston are also experiencing such
growth.

I was very blessed to not loose power but know many did including two of my
nieces and a good friend.

Who perhaps within a couple years may become Paul in rural Texas.

[RBW] Bizarre Winter Weather

2021-02-21 Thread True Golden
Hey guys,
Thanks for the kind sentiments.

Yes, it's been a tough week for Texas as well as many other states.

I consider myself very blessed that our power did not go off or even flicker.

Riding in the snow often occurred to me and if I had studded tires I would have
tried it.

I was concerned about going down on the bike and I'm older now and decided to
walk instead.

I layered up on 3 different occasions when I had to alleviate the 'cabin fever'
and walked around my area in the northern part of Dallas County.

I did not take many pics but here's one from my back yard.

My area had around 5 inches of snow which is not a huge amount but it was the
week of freezing temps that was rough.

The roads were pretty terrible all week and I did not attempt to drive until
yesterday.

Some may have heard of the terrible pile up at the beginning of this storm
where black ice on a Ft Worth freeway caused 133 cars and trucks to crash
together during the morning commute traffic.
They said 6 lost their lives.
What a tragedy!

Also a report I read this morning told of other people dying from the extended
cold.
I hate that.

It's pretty much thawed out now and I hear lots of reports of frozen pipes now
leaking.

Plumbers in the area will be really busy.

I sure hope the people in charge get the infrastructure of the power grid
hardened up for future occurrences of this nature.

I went over to take my 95 YO good friend to the post office and when I pulled
up he was shoveling snow off his side walk.
What a sight!

I didn't think he should be doing that at his age but I think one of the
reasons he has lived so long is he is his determined attitude.

Here's hoping neighbors will pull together and help each other bounce back from
still another sore trial.

Paul in Dallas
About to hop on my Miele mt bike converted to urban cruiser and get in my first

[RBW] Larger alternate to rat trap pass tires

2021-01-10 Thread True Golden
Perhaps not quite as fat as you are looking for but this guy discusses a few
26x2.3 folding tires.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tQBYjMwE7Mg

I used an earlier version of that Michelin Pilot over a few years and over 2500
miles or so and was pleased with how they rode and and held up.
They're not too heavy at around 650g I think he said.

Also he mentions a Maxxis DTH folding tire in a 26x2.3.

I've ridden that DTH tire in a 26x2.15 and have also like it quite a bit.

The ones I tried were not quite a Rat Trap Pass but not all that far behind in
my view and for my purposes proving to be more flat resistant for my urban
riding.

Good riding

[RBW] Riv Bike Pics with Christmas Themed Background

2020-12-21 Thread True Golden
Phillip,

I really enjoy cycling down Swiss Avenue.

For the unfamiliar it's a neighborhood just east of downtown Dallas known for
it's beautiful and classic homes from the early 1900's.

Those classic old Victorian style homes are really remarkable.

I'm glad owners have invested in making them look so nice.

I wonder if there are craftsman today that could build with that level of
detail incorporating artistic style with functionality.
I would think there still are some out there.
They still do it with bicycles after all.

We plan on a least one more
 'looking at Christmas lights'
excursions and will make a point to go by Swiss and look for your old
Santa. If I spot it I'll try for a picture and post.

One Mother's Day I took my wife on a tour of homes along Swiss Ave which was
for some sort of fund raiser.

It's impressive the details the turn of the century architects designed into
those homes.

I learned before air conditioning was common they designed a number of tricks
to maximize cooling effects for hot Texas summers.

Safe pedaling to all,

[RBW] The “Is It Normal Or Is It Broken” New Bike Game!

2020-12-06 Thread True Golden
I expect most of us if not all on this list can relate to this challenge of
getting a bike perfectly
'in tune', 'in synch, 'riding flawlessly ' or whatever terms you want to
describe it.

When you have several bikes it compounds the challenge.

Decades ago I paid mechanics to build up and maintain my bikes.

I recall taking over my 1999 Riv Road custom frame over to a local home bike
mechanic with all the parts to build it up. I think I paid him around $150 to
do it.

Finally I bought 6 or 7 bike repair manuals and a dozen or so recommended bike
tools and took to figuring it out for myself.

There was quite the learning curve and at times I felt really dense but
eventually I got competent for my purposes at most of it after much trail and
error.

That was before youtube

Nowadays if I get stumped I usually find a video that helps me solve the issue.

I don't consider myself an ace bike mechanic but simply adequate for my
purposes.

I recommend RJ the Bike Guy videos. He's great!

Also this guy John is fantastic:

https://johns-recycled-bicycle.blogspot.com/?m=1

His documentation of the process is simply wonderful, best I've found.
Quite the artist of bike restoration , I think.

As already mentioned buying a bike stand might be just the ticket for you Leah
to further your bike maintenance/ repair skills.

Some bike shops or community colleges might offer basic bike repair skills
classes.

Just from observation on this list I think you are well on your way and have
more skills than you realize that you can build on.

Simply observation and patience can go a long way along with youtube, possibly
a repair manual or two and the help of this online community.

Even as I write this I think of several fiddly things I need to do on at least
two bikes.

I see bikes as rideable works of art always in a state of flux and change and
needing ongoing maintenance regularly.

Fortunately I love the entire process, from finding the right bike for me,
sourcing parts, disassembly, rebuilding to my preferences, maintaining and
most of all riding them.

Occasionally I get to work on bikes with a friend or two and we get the work
done as well as have great fellowship.

Possibly in your area there is a bike savvy lady that you could meet up with
and work on bikes together.

Long-winded Paul in Dallas

[RBW] Leah’s Rivendell Raspberry Platypus

2020-12-05 Thread True Golden
Thats a great pic in front of the house decorated for Christmas!

Glad your enjoying the new bike!
Its fun to read of other's enthusiasm for their bikes.
I think its contagious.

Leah, how about starting a thread leading off with that pic...something like
this...

Pics of your Riv or fave bike in front of house, business or place all
decorated for Christmas?

Perhaps that will spread some joy and Christmas spirit.

[RBW] New list member intro

2020-11-19 Thread True Golden
Hi Harth.

I remember you from the ibob.

Welcome over to the rbw-owners-bunch list.

I still read some of the ibob topics occassionally but have gravitated more to
the riv list which is more in sync these days with my interests.

Three months ago I bought a very lightly used, almost new Sam Hillbourne and
have been enjoying it.

What Schwalbe's are you liking on the Allrounder?

Are you still doing the wool jersey biz?

[RBW] 2020 miles in 2020

2020-10-12 Thread True Golden
Adding my condolences on your father's passing.

Also, congratulations on meeting and exceeding your 2020 mileage goal!

Thats super!

I'm right around that same mileage for the year.

I try for 200 miles each month, sometimes exceeding and sometimes doing more. I
think I have 3 months this year I got in 300 and a couple only around 100. I
don't sweat it too much. It usually averages out.

Riding does make a big difference for me in dealing with the challenges,
stresses, disappointments, and trials of life as I'm sure it does for nearly
everyone on this list.

Without it I would have gone completely bonkers by now.

Yesterday I got in a nice 22 miles with my wife.

Keep up the encouraging messages Leah. You have a gift for it.

Safe riding all,

Paul in Dallas

[RBW] Orange Sam in the House

Thanks everyone.

The orange on my Sam looks to me to be more of a pumpkin orange.

The orange grips are
OneUp Components Lock-On Grips.

I'm liking the feel and comfort.
I've temporarily removed them to try to stain them a bit to subdue the bright
orange.

I'm pretty sure the guy I bought mine from said it was a 2018 Sam.
He had ridden it very few miles.

I love the look of braided housing and gave used it on a several bikes.
I looked for a dark blue braided housing but couldn't locate any.

I got this blue housing from velo orange.

[RBW] Grand Bois Cypres 700 x 30 substitutes?

2020-09-17 Thread True Golden
Hopefully a month ago for the last post
is not too long to resurrect this thread.

On impulse I bought a pair of the Challenge Strada Bianca in the 700x36 size to
try on my Sam Hillbourne.

It took me about 20 minutes per tire to mount them on Dyad 24mm wide rims.

After inflating I'm getting 36mm wide initially.

I used velcro strips to hold in place as I worked my way around.

It wasn't terrible but it was tedious.
I went round and round several times b4 inflating to check for possible
pinching of the tube.

I'm tempted to take a light easy to mount folding tire in my bag just in case I
get a flat.

>From what some have said they will get a bit easier to mount over time.

It will be interesting to see how they ride.

After reading this thread I'm wondering why I didn't just order some Rene Herse.

2020-09-16 Thread True Golden
It seems perpetual for me.
I've already changed out most of my new to me Sam Hillbourne I've had a month
or so to mostly get it like I like it.
I just changed tires today.
New Dia Compe Ene Ciclo thumb shifters are on the way to be installed next.
If I get bored for a project I tend to look on CL , find a bargain bike with
decent tubing, take it apart,  build it back Riv like and on it goes.
I may need a AA like help group.I guess there are much worse hobbies/pastimes
to pursue.
The plus is I get to ride'em and it mostly keeps me out of trouble.
I have a friend at one point that seemed to be changing out handlebars every
other week.

[RBW] 26" road/gravel tire shortage

2020-08-29 Thread True Golden
I have also been quite pleased with these Maxxis DTH tires.
https://www.modernbike.com/product-2126217584

I think they are about a toss up with the Tioga Powerblocks in terms of weight,
rolling resistance, and flat resistance.
Both are folding and come in at the 550g give or take weight range.
They also make a fatter DTH in a 26x2.3 that's about 200g heavier.

PS: DTH stands for 'Drop the Hammer'

[RBW] 26" road/gravel tire shortage

2020-08-29 Thread True Golden
Hey Patrick and all.
Been out riding.10 miles out..several hours visiting a 95 YO friend.
Then the 10 mile return trip!
Very tolerable early but dang, about 1:30 this afternoon it was blazing. Mercy!
Glad to be in the AC now.
Its egg frying on the sidewalk time!
I have Sun Rhyno-Lite rims that I measured outside width at 27mm on this
particular bike, a made over Trek 950.
The Powerblocks in a 26x2.10 are measuring 52mm width.

I think they are a very decent smooth rolling,  not too heavy, not many flats
tire.

[RBW] Orange Sam in the House

2020-08-22 Thread True Golden
Thanks Mark.
I've had quite a few vintage mt bikes set up 'Riv' style particularly in the
cockpit with 'upright' bars, quality fatter tires and practical gearing making
for comfortable and fun bikes to ride on a modest budget.
Also, I've had several nice vintage touring bikes come through the bike stable
also set up similarly.(Have two now.)
For my personal riding I give a slight edge to the touring bikes over the made
over mt bikes as I tend to be a tad faster on them for some reason, perhaps the
lighter tubing on their frames. The old tourers do have have more limits on tire
sizes.
The 'faster' aspect is very relative as I've grown old and much slower
(Actually was never very fast)
Quantifying these things is not my strong suit.
Mind you,  my previous and only other Riv was a custom road I bought from Grant
all the way back in 1999 and owned about 4 or 5 years so it's been 16 or 17
years since last owning a Riv.
(Regretted selling it but that was during my phase of trying for lighter and
faster bikes.)
Now with my new to me Riv...
I can tell a difference.
Only 28 miles on it since picking it up Tuesday morning but it just feels so
comfortable, stableand seems to want to just go.Perhaps responsive to my input
is one way to put it.
Its definitely putting a wide grin on my face!
Another plus is when stopping for a break I get to admire the overall beauty of
it and the many cool small details.
To sum up, I'm loving it more each ride. It does have a quality I've really not
quantified very well putting it at a few notches above my other bikes.
I'll continue to mull it over as I continue riding it with a big smile.

[RBW] Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-13 Thread True Golden
I bought a Rivendell Road back in 1999.
I wish I still had it.
Around a year later I lamented to Grant it had slipped while leaning on the
corner of my house and slipped down said corner leaving an inch or so scrape on
the top tube.
He responded something to the effect,'He considered putting a scratch on each
frame b4 shipping so people wouldn't obsess about a scrape on a new bike, that
they are meant to be ridden and beausage happens.'
That is not a quote but you get the gist of it.
That said,  it still bummed me for a while.
About 12 years ago I had a friend and co-worker that had a Riv inspired Heron
in pristine shape he kept in his house.
His cat knocked over something on a shelf that fell on his Heron scraping it.
He wasted no time getting a local bike builder to restore it like new.
In the grand scheme it was minor as a genetic heart issue ended his life around
age 60.
My advice , polish up what you can , dont sweat the small stuff and enjoy each
ride.
Those pipe wraps are a great idea.
Also if overnighting at a motel,  camp ground etc, I would have multiple locks
on the bikes or carry them inside which you probably do.
God's protection to you and your family for safe travels and safe riding.

[RBW] Just Pics from Your Good Ride Thread

2020-06-01 Thread True Golden
Patrick,
Thank you.
I am definitely an amateur.
Three decades back I took a photography class and learned the basics.
I bought a good Nikon film camera and several lenses and practiced quite a bit,
even buying a dozen or so photography books to try to improve.
While my children were growing up I took many pics of them.
When I got into cycling the two hobbies meshed and more often than not I had a
camera with me on my rides.
These days with a decent smart phone or compact digital camera it's of course
easy to snap away.
It's also easy to get sloppy and not concentrate on the various aspects of a
decent pic and rush which I most often do.
Along with the improved cameras on phones the editing software has improved
which makes it pretty convenient to crop,  adjust, the light, exposure,
contrast, color saturation, tone and quite a bit more to one's preferences.
Also I make good use of the delete button.
I love playing with various special effects features also.
Photos turn out better of course if I  think through the composition, the
lighting, etc b4 snapping it,  having something decent to work with on the
editing.
Over the years I've had 3 friends that were quite good, one a professional that
inspired me to work at it.
I admire the Riv folks and other folks that take film cameras along and then
share their results.
Paul in DallasAmateur who knows what makes for a decent photo but often rushing
the processand perhaps liking a couple photos I take out of a hundred.

Jim,
That archway is a sculpture piece made to pay a bit of homage to a former piece
of playground equipment from 40 or so years ago that was shaped like a rocket.
Kids growing up in the area loved climbing on that Rocket Ship.
I think that when the decision to tear it down was made an agreement was
reached to put in that arch sculpture as a memorial to honor that beloved
rocket ship.
The park is in the other side of the sculpture and across the bridge.
A Rec Ctr is on the other side nearer the arch.
The kids used to refer to the park as the rocket ship park.
A bit of minor area trivia.

2020-05-25 Thread True Golden
Like others have expressed I also contemplate while riding my bike.
Some of my best thinking is probably done while riding.
The subject of the end of life is also something I think about.
I often pray for protection on my rides as the risk is there my life could be
ended while riding.
It's a subject that can get folks in an uproar real quick as the r word gets
involved and strong feelings generally come to surface.
Then the thread can get shut down.
We are all fellow human beings on our journey through this life which will have
an end.
It's something we all have to wrestle with and figure out how to come to grips
with it during our lifeas in forming our philosophy of faith or not faith or
whatever we decide to believe or not believe or try to ignore the topic all
together.
I don't think it's an easy process to sort out.Life's not easy and it's ending
is not easy either particularly for those we deeply care about.
I don't mind talking about it offline should anyone care to as I am very much
at peace with discussing the subject. I have found the answers I sought after.
I'm probably one of the older folks 'official old geezer status 'that
participate in the group thus perhaps closer to what's next than you younger
folks.
For me everyday is a gift and I try not to take it for granted.
Cycling adds to my enjoyment on many days.
I expect there are groups online that discuss this subject of life's ending and
finding purpose in depth and of course I agree this is not the group for it.

[RBW] 26x1.75-2" tire recommendations

2016-08-20 Thread true
I bought a pair or the Tioga Power Blocks on sale
and have only done around 4 rides on them and am very pleased.

I also have Compass Rat Traps and Maxxis DTH tires on other 26" bikes.

I give the edge to the Rat Traps but cannot justify price on all my 26" bikes
but
after riding the Power Blocks a bit don't think I am giving up all that much
for the economies
realized.
They are folding tires, feel pretty supple and roll nicely.

The Maxxis DTH have also proven to be a very nice folding, smooth rolling,
fairly supple tire
and I give 3rd position to them from my experiences
over various 26" tires I have tried. I guesstimate I have 1200 miles or more on
them
and they are wearing great, and only one flat I recall. The DTH have proven to
be very durable to this point.
I sure hope the Power Blocks prove durable as well.
If so I will be ordering another pair.
>From recall both these and the DTH come in at about 550 g's
and are in the $35 per tire price range.

The Rat Traps have maybe 500 to 600 miles on them and are superior, I think,
so supple and seemingly fast rolling from my experience.
They are somewhat lighter than the Power Blocks and DTH tires
but also seem more sensitive to air pressure with my 215 lb heft over the other
two brands.
I have had 3 or 4 flats on them. I would love to try them tubeless.

Safe pedaling,

Paul C in Dallas

[RBW] 26" vs. 700c for touring/load hauling

2016-02-18 Thread true
I love to read discussions like this and learn from the variety of feedback.

After having and trying bikes with 26" ,650b and 700c wheels
my take it is not so much about the wheel size as like others have pointed out
but the quality of the tires.

That said, I also think it is even more about the 'engine'.

These days with my 'engine' getting up there in age
and at the speeds I ride I can't tell a huge amount of difference
on ride times whether I am riding my 26", 650b or 700c bikes in my mostly urban
area rides.

Riding high quality and wide enough tires 39 to 60m wide on all of them has
really added to my enjoyment in riding any of my bikes
due to the comfort of the wider tires and I don't get as 'beat up' from riding
rough roads allowing me to ride longer.

For my self contained loaded heavy (60 to 70 lbs of gear) bike tours I rode
700c wheel bikes but that was in the US.
If I get to do further touring I would not hesitate to ride 26" wheels and
would probably prefer it
if riding in countries were 26" replacements were what was available.

Another essential aspect I have not seen mentioned (pardon if I may have missed
it)
over any of the wheel sizes you chose is to select a wheel that is very well
built, especially if carrying a load.
Subpar built wheels are going to go out of true with a load. That has been my
experience.
If you are going to tour I would never scrimp on the quality of the wheel set
whatever size is chosen.

It's fun to see pics from other folk's rides, including the scenery, the bikes

Thanks for sharing them.

Most of my riding is in the urban and suburb areas of Dallas, TX

As a result most of my photos come from this area with an occasional
ride in a country road setting.
This area does have a lot of interesting sculptures, various outside art and
architecture if one knows where to look.

As I have aged I take more time to stop and snap a pic or ten.
As cell phone cameras have gotten better I pretty much rely of it these days.
I think just about all of these are taken with my S5 Samsung phone.

I linked my favs from 2015 in a story format on photobucket.

[RBW] New Winter Project: Another 650B conversion, thanks in part to you

2015-12-08 Thread true
Sure Lee.

They came off ebay.

Note, I am no wheel expert.

I am guessing I may have 300 miles or so on them.

For my experiment with 650b they are working well.

I think he accepted $10 less which covered part of shipping so I don't have
much invested

into my test but overall they seem decent enough

The rims are Zac19 36 hole and the hub shells have no labels but look very
similar to what I have seen labeled Parallax / Alivio / Acera.

The bearings seemed way too tight so I opened them up and added a bit of grease
and adjusted them where they spin nicely.

They also currently spin true. I am unsure about longevity on wheels at this
price point.

I measured the outside width at 23mm. I guess the 19m he list is the inside
width.

I do not see 36 spoke wheels listed currently. You might send the seller a
message to inquire when he expects more.

Clicking on new listing links directed me to 28 spoke wheels.

Here's his description:

Silver 650B / 27.5 wheels, 130mm rear, 100mm front,

double walled aluminum alloy rims, 1"wide, 7/ 8/9 Speed,

( I can provide for free an adapter to convert wheel to 7 speed, just ask),

36 DT IND silver spokes, Alloy hubs, quick release skewers included,

Schrader valve drilling, ERTRO 584 x 19mm

Paul,

Can you divulge the source of this budget 650b wheelset?

I have 2 mid '80s schwinn travellers ('86 in black and '88 in teal/white fade).
I've converted the '86 to 700 x 37 paselas which fit but make fenders nothing
but a pipe dream. I'm considering converting the '88 to 650b.

thanks!

[RBW] New Winter Project: Another 650B conversion, thanks in part to you

2015-12-08 Thread true
Tim,

If you posted about those wheels here or on the ibob list I probably learned of
them from you.

I don't come up with much original but continually learn from the good folks on
these lists.
There are so many willing to share their knowledge and help others. Thanks to
you all.

Trying what many of you have found works well has enabled me to get a few cool
bikes dialed
in that are a pleasure to ride.

If I occasionally get one to look pretty good in the process it just adds to
the enjoyment.

I don't recall if I shared this but another bike I miss and probably about the
loveliest bike I have ever owned
(and I have owned a bunch over the years) since that 1985 Tempo was a brand new
1999 Joe built Riv Road
assisted by Grant to pick a size.
That's one I would probably take out a loan to get back and kick myself for
letting it go.

At the time I was in a 'lighter is better' frame of mind. Live and learn.
Somewhere I still have the tube set design sheet he sent me showing the mix and
match of tubes and the frame design.
It was a gorgeous blue color with contrasting creme head tube and terrific
looking lugs.
I have a few pics of it somewhere.

[RBW] Saturday Acorn Cruncher Ride

2015-11-24 Thread true

This past Saturday it was cool and very windy in Dallas but I layered up and
took out my current fav bike ,
an Nishiki Int'l from 1984 that I rebuilt into a bike that works for me for my
urban adventures.

It rides very nicely and is comfortable for me with the bars up high for
upright riding.
Your preferences may vary. This is mine.

Currently it is sporting some 650b wheels and Compass tires.

Sunday was the 52nd anniversary of that dark day in Dallas when JFK was struck
down.
Every time I ride a route that takes me past that site there are always people
checking it out and Saturday was no exception.

I guess it's a site many visitors and area residents want to check out.

Some of the pics are from the 'grassy knoll', some from Dealey Plaza. and some
from the triple overpass.
Also there is one with the formerly named Texas School Book Depository' now the
6th Floor Museum in the background.

The one by "original restored Pegasus' is in front of the Omni Hotel as are the
giant Christmas Balls.

Also there is one with Reunion Station and the Reunion Tower in the background.

This is one of my favorite type rides to leisurely pedal an area and take pics
of things that strike me as interesting.
Most of the time there is a bike in the foreground.

I refer to my fall rides as 'Acorn Cruncher' rides. This area has countless oak
trees and the acorns are falling to the ground
in abundance. I 'crunch' lots of them on my rides this time of year.
Some streets have 'acorn powder' covering patches of the street where the autos
have pulverized the acorns.

I hope these links work. If not I might need to try again or perhaps I can
figure out to do one link for the album.

Thanks
Paul in Dallas

[RBW] 1985 trek 870 rivified and rebuilt

2015-11-02 Thread true
Very nicely done Drew.

I really like your Trek rebuild.

I expect you are going to enjoy many great rides on it.

http://vintage-trek.com/images/trek/85All-Terrain.pdf

I took a look at the specs on the vintage Trek site, Tange Prestige...nice.

I am sure enjoying several rigid vintage mtb's I have rebuilt, two of them
Trek's but 5 years newer than yours (1990)
so the geometry changed by then.

However, last week I picked up a 22" 1985 or 86 Diamondback Apex that has
pretty relaxed angles as well.
I completely disassembled it yesterday afternoon and hope to start the rebuild
today as the paint is pretty good
and a repaint/powdercoat is not necessary. It has double butted Infiniity
tubing.
I wonder what the main differences were between the Prestige and Infinity of
that era?

Did you happen to weigh the frame?
I have been weighing the various vintage mtb frames b4 rebuilding and so far
7.5 to 8.5 lbs is the range of the bare frame/fork
weights although I had one tank of a Hardrock that was 9.6 pounds for bare
frame and fork. Sold that one.
Of course all of mine have been 21,22, or 23" frames.

These are cool bikes to build up on a budget.
I have done the donation/transfer of parts thing quite a few times.

Safe pedaling,

Paul in Dallas

[RBW] Bikepacking Pikes Peak

I choose adjectives stellar and splendiferous to describe your bikepacking trip
Patrick!

Enjoyed seeing the pics and video of your adventure.

I hope the health issues have settled down and you are feeling much better.

Three questions?

What camera do you use?

Did you take a small tripod to do the riding shots and then edit?

Do you take a cell phone in case of emergencies or to check in with the family?
(perhaps there would be coverage issues even with a cell phone)

Safe pedaling,

The copy on the page where these are for sale
(https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/26-inch/compass-26-x-2-3-rat-trap-pass/)
contains the conflicting measurement info:

  Compass 26″ x 2.3″ Rat Trap Pass

  ...

  The Rat Trap Pass (26″ x 54mm)

I also recall that actual measured width was reported to be closer to 50mm. I
ordered up a pair to see if they'll fit on my Handsome XOXO, which has handled
2.1 semi-knobbies with a bit of wiggle room. If they don't fit my 10-year old
is going to have the fanciest tires in the 'hood

Also, I remember reading these actually measured out to be 50mm on their

Reminds me of my broken Schwinn Cimarron.

work.

be any big deal.
These fat tires rarely flat in my riding.

Bearings all feel good, and it is my size.

My intent is to use it for real, but not hugely gnarley, singletrack --
it, beside a wee bit of nostalgia, it will be a user, for those 2-4 times/year

Said acquaintance is also selling an '80s Cannondale something STIX

My feelings tend toward the Dakota; my experience of so very many money
losing bike projects -- trying to turn the proverbial sows ear into a silk
purse -- makes me think that the '80s vintage might be more realistic.

The Dakota feels good when I ride it; tho' it has long stays, I don't
think it is the barge-like, early '80s design, a couple of samples of which
I've also owned (and disliked).

  Thoughts?

PS: Stevie, observing, tells me that the Dakota could fetch $350 if all
stars aligned.

[RBW] Bike Flights experience so far...pretty good

2015-08-11 Thread true
I have used them twice the past 4 or 5 weeks and have been very pleased and
saved money.

Both times they just had me enter all the info online, print a shipping label
and attach to box,
and then drop off at my nearest FedEx center.

They scanned the label, gave me a receipt with tracking number and
it was on the way.

I will be using them again for future bike shipments.
One of the packages was a wheelset.

This gets me to wondering, does it have to be a bike or bike part to ship via
Bike Flights.

[RBW] Dipping my toe into mountain riding at 8800 feet ...

2015-08-07 Thread true
Fun stuff.

Thanks for sharing.

I enjoyed seeing the pics on the other thread.

I am in the Denver area a few times a year.
It would be fun to try one or more of those rides.

Of course if Patrick of the Moore was lagging behind I would be really lagging
being even more of a flatlander and older than him.

On two different month long self contained tours ( about 65 lbs of gear) with a
friend who is a much stronger rider
it was common for him to wait 30 minutes at the top of passes for me to make it.

I think the worse was a 45 minute wait.

I kept telling him to go on and we could meet at the day's end destination but
he said
he didn't mind waiting and wanted to make sure I made it ok.

He is a great riding companion and friend.

We did do some of that terrain, south of Denver ,roads only mind you, on the
2nd tour
from Sedalia, Decker, Pine, Bailey, Fairplay, across Boreas Pass to
Breckenridge,
and then points north through Wyoming on to Yellowstone Nat'l Park.

That was quite a trip.

Lover reading reports and seeing pics of adventures like this, especailly with
the two Patricks.

Depending on where you are in town Oak Cliff Bicycle Company
http://ocbicycleco.com/ or Transit Bicycle Company
http://www.transitbikes.com/. Both have competitive prices and stock good
stuff and happily do special orders for anything else you need.

Now that I'm about to become a Rivendell owner I have the dilemma of where to
get bike stuff locally.
Do any of you know of a Rivendell friendly bike shop in the Dallas area?

Lover greports and seeing pics of adventures like this, especailly with the two
Patricks.

[RBW] WTB: Any 60 or 61cm Atlantis Frames and Fork Only Up for Sale?

2015-07-23 Thread true
I have a good friend who looks at the Atlantis bikes longingly fairly often
and makes do with lesser bikes but the Atlantis is his dream bike for his type
of riding.

Shoot, it's one of my dream bikes too but out of my price range.

I am asking on his behalf if someone has a frame and fork only they are
considering selling
in a 60 or 61cm (C-T measurement) A 63cm would be too tall.
(not sure what sizes they came in in this size range) If it has a headset and
BB that would be fine. Fine if not as well.

He has a bike's worth of great parts and wheels he likes to build up such a
frame/fork.

So , if you have such a frame you wish to sell please let me know offline
preferably, and what you are asking for it
so I can pass info on to him to contact you. truegolden@ att dot
net

Thanks,

Paul in Dallas

[RBW] Vittoria Voager Hyper Tires on Long Low.

2015-01-23 Thread true
On two of my bikes I have the Vittoria Voyager Hypers in the 700c x 38 which
run true to size on the wheels I have them mounted on
and I have been very pleased.

I have had several flats from goathead stickers and a small nail but most tires
would flat from those.
I think they are one of the better values in tires in this size.
If they had a 26 size I would be interested.

Safe pedaling,

[RBW] A bike for Mom

2015-01-21 Thread true
Very, very nicely done Tony.
It's a beautiful bike.

Saw the mention of Groody Bro's powder coaters.
Based on favorable comments here as I recall and on the ibob list I have been
contemplating sending
them a vintage rigid MTB frame to coat I plan on building up as a fatter tired
urban cruiser.

Thanks for sharing your project.

You recall about how much coating and shipping costs were?

Thanks

[RBW] Brisk November Ride

2014-11-12 Thread true
Deacon Patrick,

I enjoy your posts and pics and continue to be inspired by your minimalist life
style, hopefully enough to minimalize more myself.

Paul in Dallas (only about 32 degrees here this morning.

===

Deacon Patrick lamontg...@mac.com: Nov 11

We got an inch of snow last night and a brisk 4˚F at 7am, so I bundled up and
headed out, hopeful of making it to the top of Lovell Gulch or perhaps Rampart
Reservoir. Alas, the slick snowpack left me pondering my own mortality on the
hood of a diesel truck just learning how to drive in the snow (either being
from somewhere else or having forgotten in the last 6 months). So I wimped out
and turned around.

All clothing systems worked beautifully except for footwear. I have yet to sort
out what to wear that handles uber cold to wet and sloppy AND is minimalist.
But I am home now, and can feel my toes again. They are still pink and still
wiggle, so I wasn’t too stupid. Grin.

Photos show what felt like a quintessential November day in Colorado hills.
(There’s 12 all told, use the left arrow to see them all.)

Re: [Bulk] [RBW] Quick Swapping of Wald Basket on Front Rack

Quick Swapping of Wald Basket on Front Rack

Call Me Jay callmehamt...@mac.com: Sep 07 04:52PM -0700

“I'm thinking of getting a front rack and Wald basket for my newish Homer
for commuting use. I already have a Sackville Shop Sack so it seems like a
no brainer. That said, I'd like to able easily take off the basket for
weekend rides with a rando bag without having to cut zip ties. Kind of a
hassle and a bit wasteful. Any suggestions?”

Jay,

I am successfully using the velcro ties to secure my rear basket to my drop bar
converted vintage Specialized MTB 'grocery getter'

bike with no problems.

Contributing to my method working could be the quantity as I used a dozen of
them and some of mine

are a bit heavier duty than those linked.

I just removed it over the Labor day weekend for riding around Austin, TX
installed it back again upon returning.

It does take a bit longer with so many but not too big of a hassle and like you
I did not like wasting all the plastic zip ties/tie wraps.

I can lift the rear of the bike by the basket and there is no movement. I did
snug them down pretty tightly even breaking one by pulling too tightly.

The ties I used were purchased at Home Depot.

Sometimes I really load that basket down, lots of groceries, and even
occasionally carrying another complete bike on top of it.

Safe pedaling,

Paul in Dallas

[RBW] Upright

2014-08-16 Thread true

That is one 'uprighteous' video!

I enjoyed seeing it. Thanks for sharing.

I have one bike set up very upright with Albatross bars, an old mid 80's
Peugeot MTB, heavy but fun to ride.
Well, not all that heavy at 29 to 30 lbs. after reading that bike weight thread.

Sweet video, but the average uprightness quotient is a quamtum (new metric)
measure above anything on the Rivendell site.

I notice too how many of the riders lunge their torsos forward to get
torque.
