Saddle is in great shape no tears or blemishes other than the silver script is worn off a little.the leather was partially re-glued underneath the saddle but was done very well and not noticeable once mounted. $40 - Velo Orange Hammered 700cx37mm fenders. Includes all stock mounting hardware plus some additional parts. These were mounted once and then removed, test ridden only once around the block. The Fender Stays were not cut, a few of the bolts were cut down but they are easy to find at any hardware store for a under a $1. They are in excellent shape, not perfect since they were mounted but this is a great way to save $15 compared to new. $25- Nitto Dynamic II Stem 110mm/90 degree. I have two of these both were mounted once and then removed. no scratches or blemishes would be visible once mounted as the stems were never inserted beyond the max line. $25 - Cinelli XE stem 120mm. This stem came from a 90's Litespeed Titanium bike. Stem is in great shape. Classic Cinelli quality. $80 - Dura Ace 7400/Mavic Open 4CD 8speed sis wheelset. 32 hole hubs that spin butter smooth, includes original 7400 dura ace skewers. Rims have a fairly well worn brake track but still have life left on them. the wheels are pretty straight just not perfect, will work perfectly fine as is or get them trued up. I doubt that short (30minute) dips would do anything bad. I have never had a problem with pitting even after an hour soaking in draino gel. While I have never done handlebars, I have done chainrings, brake levers, cranksets and frames, etc..never had a problem. I wouldn't hesitate doing a handlebar myself. That is not to say that I am an expert or that you shouldn't be careful. Oven cleaner is another story, I have seen that eat at the surface of aluminum after an hour. Wasn't pretty, and turned the part black (black came off if you scrubbed it gently) I have had discussions with smarter people than me about this stuff and the consensus was that the draino gel isn't strong enough to cause issues for the short durations we are soaking our parts. Still if its your first time maybe try a junk part and see for yourself. I really don't think its an issue, but am happy to be corrected by someone with experience with this sort of thing. A separate issue: I have never had a problem with the finish over a long period of time due to oxidation, although I believe that is an issue, maybe it doesn't show itself for 10 years or more. One more point I should clarify in my instructions: when you dip the part check on it every 10 minutes. you may find that you only need the part in there for 20 minutes or even less before you pull it out to rinse the first time, if you have scrubby brush you can scrub the part gently and see the finish come off even while its soaking in the draino, that will speed the process up a little. I am not sure how even the finish will be if you can't dip the whole bar all at once, but wouldn't be a big deal if your wrapping most of it in tape eventually. Very easy...Draino liquid gel. takes about 30 minutes to soak and then hose it off. You dont want to let it soak more than an hour or 2 though. I did this to a black ano chainring and it looked factory matte silver when I was done. I had to gently scrub it a little and did it in 3 passes, soak, rinse/scrub, rinse, dry repeat. If you do it right they will look factory finished. I have this gorgeous Pashley Tube Rider Double Scoop in Pink/ Tourquoise Upgrades include: Nitto Periscopa stem, Nitto bars, mks touring pedals, shimano brake levers, cork grips, a suntour thumbshifter used in friction mode, and basket. I have the original twist shifter and grips as well as the original beach cruiser style bars. All will be included. This was the last one imported from the uk back in '10. I am not sure if these are available anymore state-side from a pashley dealer. I was told last year that the us distributer wasn't importing them anymore. perfect shape not a blemish to be found. no dents cracks etc. there are scuff marks here and there on the pedals and crank arms, just the normal wear. always stored indoors ridden about 1000 miles. wheels are true, everything works perfect. I havent had my frame long enough to know if the rust effect is growing over time or if its the same as it was when it left RBW HQ. Any other raw frame experiences? It's possible that people are confusing the idea of clear-coating frames with clear powder coating. A few years back, there was a short-lived trend to clear coat frames to show off the industrial nature of the TIG welds - the discoloration and metal scorching being a kind of tribal tattoo of toughness. This did not work well, as clear coating - the layer that you put over traditional wet paint finishes - is semi-porous. That means that enough air can get through to encourage the oxidation process. I saw frames go from no rust to completely rusted in a few months. It was not slow. Clear powdercoat is different. It has much less permeability. I'd be surprised if those rust areas changed much over years. As others mentioned, if you see a steel frame being put together, it's amazing how much surface rust is visible. If it were mine, I'd take some photos and measurements and put it in a file somewhere for reference. If I were worried, I might take it to a framebuilder to have that person evaluate it directly. Someone who is observing it directly and has familiarity with steel tubes and their processes is who I'd trust. Then I'd go ride the heck out of the bicycle. Which canti brakes do you have? Low profile or high profile? integrated straddle hangers suck for this reason alone. integrated hangers were made for ease of assembly not for flexibility in setup. Get a non integrated straddle hanger or if you have low profile brakes go with high profile brakes which allow a higher straddle cable placement. On my high profile cantis have the straddle hanger placed at about the bottom headset cup (650b wheel) well out of the way to cause interference. Braking performance is fantastic snappy and no feeling of sponge. [RBW] Is the light surface rust on the clear powdered Riv's a long term problem?
Just curious if anyone agrees with various statements/opinions about the clear powdered Rivendell frames I have received on some other forums. Personally im not too worried about it and I love the visual effect of the pattern (see link of pics I provided above), much prefer the texture over it being totally clean. I havent had my frame long enough to know if the rust effect is growing over time or if its the same as it was when it left RBW HQ. Any other raw frame experiences? Here are some of the posts: Curious, it looks like rust is popping up in various spots under the clear. Wondering if they simply cleared over it all, and it'll stay as is, or if it will spread, or is spreading? That rust is an issue. I have a number of clear powder frames that are 5+ years old with no rust and heavy sweaty use, and there's not a hint of rust. I also was a dealer for Salsa when they were doing a clear powder option, and I talked to Ross about a frame we got that developed rust on the tt in the form of a hand print... he thought it was a big deal and refinished at no cost. You can also see that I now have one of the Nitto R cages and a Electra Ticino cage, they look exactly the same. My favorite mod was running the Bell on the exposed threads of the Canti brake hanger. Its a little forward of where you traditionally would run it but I can reach my finger easily to the striker which is pointing up, the position keeps it out of the way which I like. I also had to swap out the headset which was pitted out from being run loose, the new headset is one of the really awesome Cane Creek 100 threaded units which are I think even nicer than a Chris King. I was also running the VO 1st gen brakes but got tired of them cause there was no toe-in adjustment and no spring adjustment. They stopped great but squeeled like crazy and one side of the brke arm on the front always ran too close to the rim. These Shimano brakes are pretty fiddly but I really appreciate the adjustments and was able to get them set-up perfectly. I havent tried the Albatross bars. To me the Singles Bar is comfy. You would have to do a side by side comparison. I ride with gloves and am comfy for 15 miles plus no problem. I havent really ridden it much further distance wise. The bars have more give than the Bullmoose bars thats for sure. Hey Guys, Here are some updated pics of my Bombadil after much tinkering, experimenting and of course plenty of saddle time. Everything functions wonderfully. Swapped out the Bullmoose bars for these Sycip Singles Bar, found my old Specialized branded Dirtdrop stem. This bar is so much more versatile and comfortable than the Bullmoose bars I could never get my hands comy on them, I figure it had to do with the fixed rear-upward angle. As you can see I have these bars rear-downward which feels much more natural. Decided I would run the thumbshifters under the bar so I would have more hand positions, they function near perfect except when I am trying to shift into the lowest gear in the rear its a little awkward but im used to it now and doable just a little stretch to do it. My Giant OCR has been a good friend on tours, but it doesn't have the same feel as my Bombadil. (I do admit to liking and missing my disc brakes= only when stopping-minor detail) Anyway right or wrong I've found myself looking at bikes and seeing that it's not just steel or a leather saddle or bags that is Riv'ish .. it's not some cult of practicality even. But as a package of geometry (I am dumber than box of rocks on that subject) size and style combined that make the rivendell bike. If I got the same ride quality and handling and feel from an LHT or a Gunner at 500 bucks I'ld go there, but I don't .. this could be because I'm 6'5 tall or it could be I'm delusional. What makes the Rivendell Different.. how does one explain that difference to those that just see a steel antique looking bke? There is a new option on the horizon. Yesterday I was in a bikeshop that sells cruisers and town/commuter bikes. They carry all the Electra bikes and as part of the Ticino line of bikes they make now, have released a copy of the Nitto Touring Cage, I bought one for $20 and its an identical copy of the nitto cage. and for $20 I thought what the hell. They call it their ticino tourist cage. Its a nice option these days. you guys should check out Electra's website for the whole range of components from the Tourist line. TA style cranks, TA style pedals, C- Record style hubs. and a lot more. Nice looking stuff, just not sure of the durability factor. I vote for option #2 that would seem like the most elegant solution. I have never seen a setup that used 1 1/8th fork with a 1 quill stem, using some kind of an adapter. perhaps something could be fab'd up. unless your married to the fork I would use the King devolution, I guess it comes down to which is more important to you, the existing fork or the bullmoose bars. FWIW, it's noticeably stiffer than my 66cm atlantis--especially out of the saddle. I've seen and ridden the customs that my other tall friends ride that don't have room for fenders and just don't ride as well. (note they don't have a bell either) Oh well.. nah its just a little shelf wear no scratches. It was laced up to a NOS wheelset. I wanted the rims so I just unlaced them and put the hub on a shelf. The front hub is not available though. Guranteed to be unused and I didnt see scratches on the hub I just checked it again. if your not happy I would be fine with giving your $ $ back. Proper setup of Canti Brakes is a bit of a lost art these days. Nowadays the Tektro CR720 Cantilever Brakes are just about as easy to setup as V brakes, mostly due to the fact that they use regular V- brake style brake pads. The only thing more fiddly on these is setting up the straddle cable correctly. The Pauls would also be just as easy to setup right, or again any canti brake that uses the threaded V brake brake pads. anyway thats my 2 cents. I have to disagree with some of the statements. V-brakes are just easier not to screw up during setup (fewer adjustments, fewer things to setup wrong), thats really the only major advantage, there is a small leverage benefit but canti's have better modulation in general. If you setup Canti's properly and run the right brake pads and proper short pull levers they will stop as well as any cable actuated rim brake will maybe even as good as cable discs. You have to have the Straddle cable setup right and then have to have the brake pads hitting the rim at 90 degrees and toed in, most of the poorly performing Canti brakes are not adjusted to the correct geometry. Proper setup of Canti Brakes is a bit of a lost art these days. Nowadays the Tektro CR720 Cantilever Brakes are just about as easy to setup as V brakes, mostly due to the fact that they use regular V- brake style brake pads. The only thing more fiddly on these is setting up the straddle cable correctly. The Pauls would also be just as easy to setup right, or again any canti brake that uses the threaded V brake brake pads. anyway thats my 2 cents. [RBW] Custom Stem? Who makes a worthy one for my Bombadil
Hey guys. So I am having a bit of a dilema. Been riding my Bullmoose bars all week and my hands just arent agreeing with these. I am going to run either Porteur bars or Albatross or something similar with not a whole lot of rise not drop bars. There arent a whole lot of options these days as far as stems go. I believe what I want is a stem that has a bit of rise to it. This way I dont need to run a technomic raised all the way. I really like the Nitto Lugged stems and have thought about running a threadless Nitto with a Quill adapter. But that seems kinda silly. Another option I saw that I really liked was the Nitto Reversable stem but it looks like the only ones around are 60mm and those are $130..not that bad really but I think I need at least an 80mm, man these are so cool. Wish I could find an old Diamond Back MTB that had a similar stem stock on em also a nitto made item. I know about the Nitto Dirt Drop stems but honestly I find them a bit uglyis that silly of me? So the last thing I am contemplating is a Custom stem. If I get a custom stem made I would like to get something made that is similar to a lugged nitto, something that will match the personality of my frame and lugged seatpost I have. [RBW] Got Rivendell Bombadil
I am very stoked Found this locally about 3 miles from my place. Bought it without a seat or rear derailleur. Replaced a few parts including new cables and housing swapped brakes, removed a few links from the chain. Rode a few times this weekend. Although my ass is sore from the new Brooks B17 special, I am in love! Rides so smooth and classy all the way. Now just waiting for my slicks to arrive. Plan on getting a front rack but not sure which one. I like the Mini racks and marks rack, but I also saw an ahearn rack at a shop that is amazing. Its more of a 12 pack rack. Let me know what you guys think, sorry for the lighting. I measured several times I have short legs and a longer upper body. Test rode a 52 Bombadil fits perfect and the owner has almost the same body type as I do he is 5'10 and has an 80 PBH.
