Thanks so much for all the great advice and for sharing your experiences
re: the car racks! Yesterday afternoon we spent some time in our local shop
and ended up getting that Kuat NV 2.0, 2-Bike Hitch Rack. (Though one of
the mechanics had a 1UP himself and recommended it, too.) They installed it
and we tried it out today on Hwy. 1 (and on our neighborhood potholes!). It
seems very solid and the bike didn't budge...and the combined weight of
bike and rack didn't sink the Subaru either...so all good so far:) When we
get my husband's Platypus (50 cm) we'll see how it does with both bikes.
Here's a photo of the first time on the rack for Clem and of sunset into
the Pacific tonight. Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Bike Rack

2023-11-11 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Rack shopping for Rivendells is my least favorite. There are so many things
I need a rack to work around for my Rivendells. Long WB, fenders,
step-thru… I have the 52 Clem (if memory serves, the WB is 52”) and the 55
Platypus, which is like 47.25in WB. I have the Saris Freedom 4 bike rack,
but the only way to make it work for my long bikes was to purchase the long
wheelbase bar, which no longer is made by the company. What does that
mean?! Is mine still safe?!

I’ve been looking at the Kuat racks but they neglect to show photos of how
the bikes sit in the NV2 if using the wheel trays - yes, I see the trays
but what is the mechanism holding the frame? Hollywood makes a simple and
affordable rack (Trail Rider) that *should* work for you provided that the
bar can get low enough on the Clem top tube while the wheel trays are wide
enough apart to accommodate the bike’s length. The Hollywood rack is
inexpensive and easy and will work for your WBs but if you plan to just
leave it on the vehicle, it’s annoying. The Saris Freedom folds up so it’s
not in my rear window’s line of sight all the time. Which is important,
since I leave the rack on the van from March-November.

I think working with a shop that sells these racks is a good idea. Let us
know what you settle on!

Jacob, Hopefully no harm to bike or others.

I had a Kuat beta and for a hanging bike rack, I though it was terrific. I
now have a Saris Freedom (tray) and like it even better. The part that
touches the frame has flexible channels for the wires to sit in, so very
little actually touches the frame. Reasonable price too.

Comes with a handle already and a chain lock.

[RBW] Bike rack suggestions

Looking for recommendations for a bike rack for a Prius for my fendered
Betty. Lots of tray mount racks seem to not be made for fenders. And the
hanging style would need a bar since my Betty is a step through. This
isn't for my car. I don't like to drive. Thanks in advance.

1up all the way. But if you live in Los Angeles don’t trust the lock and
special Allen key that come with them. We have thieves here who can get them
off your hitch without leaving a mark. I had a U-lock around mine andthe hitch
for years and two weeks with it only locked up with the stock lock and it was
gone. I’ve read stories about them getting stolen at trail heads (not sure
where) and that’s what originally prompted me to lock them up more.

Re: [RBW] Bike rack

2022-07-29 Thread Brian Turner
If I was starting from scratch, I would probably go for the 1-Up racks that
so many folks here recommend. Yeah, they look heavy a bit clunky, but they
really do seem the best fit for all variety of bikes, especially the
larger, longer wheelbase bikes and bikes adorned with racks, fenders,
baskets, etc.

I really love my Kuat NV 2.0 Base, but there are limitations to it. If your
wheelbase is over 50", they won't fit on a Kuat. That would immediately
exclude the L-XL Susie / Gus bikes. My medium Gus fits, but just barely.

Re: [RBW] Bike rack

2022-07-29 Thread luckyturnip
I’m always going to recommend the 1-up rack. Yes it’s very expensive. I finally
gave in and bought one because we have such a variety of bike sizes in my
household My only gripe is that it’s very heavy. (We do have the heavy duty
version because some of the bikes are quite large/long). But I’m very happy
with it (once it’s installed on the car).
