Can you post a few pics of your current setup? It could be that your daruma
bolt is too short (which could be solved with a recessed nut). Orthie-- I
think this is Rene-- has a pics of daruma-bolt setup on his Betty Foy:

Here's Somervillebikes's fender install with a stack of washers-- replace
it with your wedge.

There's also a pic of the recessed nut on daruma bolt:

I too, would like to see your photos. If you reference the photos on my
Betty that Shoji posted the link for, you'll see that I had to modify the
body of the daruma so the wedge would fit inside the steerer tube due to
the recessed washer on my brake. I also used a recessed washer under the
fender due to the very tight clearance with the Hetres on the Betty, but if
your clearance is larger, this isn't really necessary.

At this point, I'm not sure I understand what your problem is...

Re: [RBW] Fender Install Help (Fender Wedge)

2013-02-09 Thread Minh
So i think the problem is that i don't have as much drop from the bolt
inside the fork crown to the fender as you guys have, here's a pic of it
now, http://flic.kr/p/dTsLNn

i'm actually using a daruma for the fender stay instead of fork crown one,
the reason being if i use the longer fork crown one then the fender drops
down too low, with this setup the fender is held tight against the fork
crown.

If i use the longer daruma, the fender hangs low, and i was worried about
tire clearance on the inside of the fender if i just kept tightening the
bolt. with some amount of spacers i could get it to almost work, but i
think the bigger wedge would be needed, in the end i'm happy with the
current setup as it's held in place tight now, but i would've preferred the
cleaner setup. but i've grown to accept that all fender installations
require a certain amount of compromise...

[RBW] Fender Install Help (Fender Wedge)

2013-02-09 Thread René Sterental
Minh,

If the daruma is too long, you can always shorten it with a dremel after
measuring how much you need to shorten it after positioning the fender
correctly and seeing how much of it extends past the bolt under the fender.
Since you don't seem to have a center bolt brake, you have more flexibility
to fine tune the adjustment.

Re: [RBW] Fender Install Help (Fender Wedge)

2013-02-08 Thread Minh
Rene,

Thanks for responding, i feel really dumb because when i hold it in my hand or
read your instructions it sounds really easy but when i go to do it i cannot
figure it out. Maybe i have a spatial comprehension issue, but let me try to
explain my confusion.

The way i have it setup now with the metal washer and rubber washer the fender
is held up tight against the fork crown, there is now sag. When i tried
swapping it out with the wedge, there are a few things i don't understand.
-is the wedge actually bolted down? with the big hole in the center, even when
i bolt everything together, i can just lift it off the top of the daruma
(before i slide it into the fork crown)
-the 'well' in the wedge on the fork-crown side is so deep that if i try to
bolt the daruma only, the eyelet on the daruma that the fork-crown-bolt slides
through would be below the edge of the wedge, i wouldn't be able to get the
bolt through(and the daruma threads would actually be too deep in the underside
of the fender.

In order to get over the second problem, i added spacers to push the daruma
higher into crown, adding as many spacers as possible i am able to get
everything bolted and mounted, but it's not tight against the fork crown, it
sags 5mm (?), i can force it up by using a third contact point with my front
rack, but i'd prefer for it to be tight against the fork on it's own. Are
your's tight against the fork crown? Thinking about it now, if i removed the
rubber washer and added more spacers it would push it higher into the crown,
but then the eyelet on the daruma would't actually hang on the thru bolt.

Now i might have the wrong hardware as i've swapped out the different bits with
my fenders. I'm trying to do this with a set of VO fenders. and i've tried
two different daruma's that i have.

Thanks for any tips, in the end (after an hour of fiddling) i just put the
rubber+metal washers back in place and tightened everything back togther, i
really could've used a picture guide for this, but i've always had issues
trying to decipher fender installation instructions!

[RBW] Fender Install Help (Fender Wedge)

Ok, so in the middle of winter tweaking, has anyone installed a fender wedge,
http://www.renehersestore.com/servlet/the-520/Fender-Wedge-for-underside/Detail
on a Hillborne? I can't figure out how to position it to get it to fit, i'd
like to replace the rubber washer and get the fender a little tighter in that
one spot.

Re: [RBW] Fender Install Help (Fender Wedge)

2013-02-07 Thread René Sterental
I use them on my bikes. I assume you have the daruma already in place and
the original flat metal washer + rubber washer, correct?

The wedge replaces the metal washer and should fit inside the fork steerer
(narrow diameter section) and the thinner edge on the front to
help, accomodate the fender's curvature, although in my experience on the
Riv bikes you still need to pull the front upwards a bit.

If your bike has canti brakes it'll fit perfectly. If your bike has center
pull brakes, you'll need to file the front section of the narrower circle
as the long nut that tightens the brake pushes it forward and prevents it
from fitting inside the steerer. Depending on the clearances, you'll use
the black rubber washer or others to close the gap.

Let me know if still have questions.
