2024-04-27 Thread J J
Thanks Eric and Jim! Will's blog post was the first I saw of the full paint
job and the build. Up to yesterday afternoon I had only seen a few low res
teaser images, so I've been soaking in Will's fantastic photos. I'm blown
away by the care and detail of Rick's paint job. I had told Rick that I
hope he has fun with the bike, and it feels like he did. And Antonio did
such a clean, lovely build. Thanks Antonio! I can't wait to see the bike in
person. And to ride it!

@Jim, the blue ring around the pump peg really got me, too, as did the
lining around the top and bottom of the head tube and the little circle
cutouts in the fork crown. Incredible detail and beyond what I was
expecting.

@Eric, thanks for the kind words. I can see the deep rusty pink tones now
that you mention it. Like I said in the writeup, copper is super tricky.
There are so many colors posing as copper! You've got a great eye about the
lime
green Newbaum's with amber shellac. I went back and forth on tape and Will
urged the lime. I'm stoked about how it turned out.

This project has been a long time in the making. Everyone I worked with,
directly and indirectly — Rick on the paint, Rich on the wheels, Will and
the entire Rivendell crew on everything else — was super welcoming,
accessible, and engaging. And they made the entire process a lot of fun,
which above all is what bikes should be about as far as I'm concerned.

2022-04-24 Thread Dave Grossman
The fenders are pink! They are planet bike and I don't think they are in
production anymore.

The rack mounted really easily. The side mounts move vertically so they
are easy to line up with the brazeons. It is a heavy rack but pretty
bombproof. It can fit a Wald 139 on top with two bags. I haven't been
bikepacking on it with the rack but I plan on trying it out in the next
couple of weeks. I've normally just used a basket but I really want to try
the panniers.

Oh my goodness!! Where did you get the pink (or lavender?) fenders, Dave
and what brand are they? They're perfect with the dark green (and would
look great on my dark green Clem). Nice touch with the matching brake
cable color. It's all so perfectly complimentary.

Johnny - can you tell me about your frame bag? Custom, I assume? I'm
about to make one for my 62cm Hunq and am debating whether to do one zipper
like yours appears to be or two horizontal zippers with a divider. My main
use will be for storing tent poles and fly rods. (Plus a frame bag just
looks perfect in that top triangle!)

Re: [RBW] Re: A Hunq

2021-12-10 Thread Adam Moss
I have a 53cm Hunq. I believe it's the most recently built Hunqapillar,
built in 2019 by Steve Rex in Sacramento as a kind of one of
thing- https://www.instagram.com/p/ByGJjRtn1ED/

It's a bit of an amalgamation of some of their most recent frame designs
and I'm just smitten. It's become my only bike (other than the FS MTB and
the family hauler) and I am never left wanting. The Hunq owners club is a
good one to be a part of.

I have a 62 cm green Hunq that I bought from Riv in 2014. I believe I was
told the frame came from Waterford at that time. Ordered in April 2014 and
delivered July 10. I have Nitto Noodles on and use the bike as much as
possible. It's a pleasant ride, though I may change the Noodles out to
something more upright as I grow older. I am in my early sixties already.

I believe Rivs last run of Hunqs( Green) looked like a great bike but they did
a really short run of them. The chainstay was an in between length( 49cm) of
earlier Rivs and the current longer stays. It had less BB drop ( 71mm) and a
decent stack/ reach ratio where drop bars were a little more feasible. And it
was offered in 700c and 650b in the 59cm size which was pretty neat. And

Ah, that makes sense. I didn't remember that any Hunqs were built in Taiwan
but I do remember the first couple runs being priced that way..it was
originally the way-cheaper version of Bombadil.

[RBW] Re: A Hunq

2021-12-08 Thread 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch
My 54cm Hunq was built in 2013, and I thought I was told it was being built
by Waterford, but I don't see a "W" in the serial number. Maybe I'm
misremembering, or maybe I need new reading glasses?

+1 on never selling my Hunq, it's perfect for me. I can't see how anyone
can use bars that come back farther than Albatross bars though. I need to
use a 12-13cm stem with Alba's or I suffer from claustrophobia, even when
using a lugged seat post.

I think the first run or 2 is as the hunq brochure describes. They then
moved to waterford and used taiwan made forks. I think thats when it
switched to green but I can't confirm that. Tubing also became true temper

waterford back then, but was reading the brochure and trying to nail down

[RBW] Re: A Hunq

2021-12-08 Thread Al in SF
Just to confirm what Marc is saying, this is from an Hunqapillar brochure
:

"The Hunqapillar frame is an interesting mix of materials and people behind
it. It's our design, everything down to the last micro-detail. It’s made in
Taiwan by a team of builders trained by Tetsu Ishigaki, of Toyo. The main
tubes are superexpensive Japanese Kaisei 8630 heat-treated. The seat- and
chainstays are perfectly good Taiwan CrMo. The fork is made in Japan by
Tetsu Ishigaki at Toyo."

Best,
Al in SF

Not that it really matters, but that is a Taiwan frame, the Waterford built
have different lugs on the head tube as well as a different paint job.
Waterford only did one initial production run, so, unless that is a custom
order, it was built in Taiwan.

Indeed! Going to use it as a daily commuter (18 miler R/T) and do some
local mixed use trails. I might even try the Barry Roubaix on it in March.
I am probably just going to use it for most riding as of now. Bikepacking
over the summer for sure.

[RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-17 Thread Garth
A bike is a bike is a bike is a bike, we all know this. There are no
limits to a bike, regardless of it's name, shape, color, and every and any
concept of a bike. Tàke all those 80's mtb's for example, they were then
and still are ridden everywhere on any surface, they too are just a bike,
none came with "self imposed restrictions" becàuse there never were any.

I ride my Bomba mostly on road, sometimes off. I don't have special
tires for this or that condition, the tires are wherever I am, wherever I
go, no big deal. Are there better tires ? In a given moment, and all I
ever have is the given moment, no, there is not a better tire, ever,
regardless of all the special nàmes, like super uber carcass, uber rubber
and uber feel, etc. etc. , A tire too is a tire is a tire is a tire. Better
in this case inferring other-than what is here, which is double talk as
here is here and here isn't other-than here.

Comparisons, relativities, weights and measures . hmmm. I ask
myself , of what foundation could anything be judged, weighed, measured or
attributed to ? This is an honest question of which I can find no answer
to, nor has anyone else. A foundation to be true must be absolute, self
apparent to everyone , incapable of being hidden, divided, split or
separated. Literally, must be all being , Totality.

Re: [RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-16 Thread David Stein
Somewhat related to John's story. I bought my Hunq to be a majority trail
bike with some roads (usually necessary to get to the trails in Oakland and
Berkeley). I've since picked up a Jones for most of my trail riding so the
Hunq, while initially a trail bike, is now mostly ridden on roads. It works
fine for roads though. I've tried to replace it twice with more 'road'
bikes: I briefly owned and sold a SH and I also recently bought an Ocean
Air Rambler to replace the Hunq since it's more of a trail bike and not
seeing so many trails. Lo and behold, I still grab the Hunq almost every
time (hence why I sold the SH, and why the Rambler isn't getting the action
I thought it would). Or rather I should clarify, I grab it every time
except for club ride type rides when my go to is my Gunnar sport. When I'm
by myself on primarily road rides, running errands, camping, or going on a
mixed ride I usually opt for the Hunq. With Rat Trap Pass tires it's rides
so smooth on the roads and handles almost any trail minus mud and super
sandy areas where you'd want tread.

Wouldn't be the best choice? The Hunq tilts more towards dirt/trail use (and
loaded at that) so I imagine it's a bit stiffer then a road machine would be?
If you add fairly thin tires on top of that, even more so. My Atlantis is
nearly ideal for paved areas, but because it's designed for loaded touring even
it is a little stiff, Which is OK, because I am big.
I would think a higher volume tire 1.5" or so would be preferable.

If I were buying strictly road tires for my Hunqa, I would go with the
https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/components/tires/700c/compass-700c-x-44-snoqualmie-pass/

tires mentioned above. I have been riding the Thunder Burt 2.1 lites
tubeless, and they are also amazing on the road, but there is some noise
from the tread. For me, they are perfect as a mixed road/gravel option,
and since I generally use this bike as an all-rounder commuter/camper, I
like to have some tread.

I have the Snoqualmie pass tires on my Appaloosa. Been riding them for a while
now and they still measure 41mm on rims as narrow as velocity twin hollows and
as wide as the stock wheels that came with the complete Appaloosa. They ride
really nice though and feel bigger than they are when riding through the ruts.
I alternate between these tires and 2.1 Liteskin T-burts. Lately, when back on

Re: [RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-15 Thread Tim Gavin
I agree; I love Thunder Burts. I have a set of 26 x 2.1" Liteskins on my
'88 Schwinn KOM.

The TBs feel about as fast as my Schwalbe Super Moto tires, which are about
95% as fast as the best supple tires I've ridden (Pari-Moto, GB Cerf,
Lierre, Compass Stampede Pass).

What makes the Thunder Burts exceptional is that they're fast, but they
still have a reasonable amount of tread for occasional dirt wanderings.
Mine feel great on a local lazy singletrack. The TBs have great cushion and
enough traction; they only get squirrely if the trail is muddy.

Whereas, the Super Moto and Compass RTP tires have no tread. I washed out
the front Super Moto tire a couple times on twisty singletrack. The SM and
RTP are great for gravel and pavement, but not dirt.

2016-11-15 Thread dstein
I run Rat Trap Pass tires on my 26" hunq, alternating between that and some
2.1" smart sams. Mostly it's pavement this day with some trails mixed in.
Albastache bars (which I've tried to replace with no less than 3 other bars
and always go back to albastache - including dirt drops, jones, and map
bars), but the Albastache's for me are the sweet spot and an important
determination along w/ the tires for what kind of riding you do on the
bike.

It's a stouter, heavier bike for sure. But I find I go just as fast as any
other rivendell or similar bike I've had. Nowhere near as fast as my go
fast gunnar road bike with a light wheelset and 33mm compass tires, but
compares pretty well to everything else I've ridden.

[RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-15 Thread Shoji Takahashi
My 48cm Hunqapillar has 26" tires. Most of my miles are commuting miles
(Boston-area streets). I have Rat Trap Pass on it now-- fast tires on and
off road. I probably run them with more pressure than Compass would
recommend, but I've gotten more than a few pinch flats after hitting deep
potholes.

I've used Compass 26x1.5 before RTP came out. Those were nice and fast too.
TBH, it looked strange with all the clearance!

I've also used Big Bens. Those were very good, too-- felt fast, but not as
fast, as Compass RTP or 26x1.5. I think for the money and my use case
(commuting on streets, some in poor condition), Big Bens are as good,
perhaps better, than RTP.

Good luck!

2016-11-15 Thread Garth

I have used Vittoria Hypers 40/38 on my Bomba , which I ride mostly on
pavement, but I don't hesitate to ride it anywhere when I feel like it
regardless of the tire. That'd be the minimum tire I'd ride with it, the
Hypers also don't have alot of volume for their width. I've not ridden
Compass tires so I can't help you there, but if I were to I'd get that new
44mm one and not a Barlow pass. From reports I have seen here it's not
really 44mm wide either, but regardless you will get notably more volume
than the Barlow without any compromise. I'm currently riding some
43mm(actual) Kenda EZ ride tires on my Bomba which is good enough for me.

[RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-15 Thread Kevin Lindsey
John -
Most of my riding is on pavement; depending on my commute, about four miles
may also be on the packed clay and gravel of the local tow path. I started
out with 50mm Schwalbs on my Hunqapillar; the ride was great, the gravel
felt like pavement, the pavement felt like silk, etc. Unfortunately, I
simply couldn't keep the rear tire inflated - there was something stuck in
there that neither I nor the LBS could find and that continued to puncture
my tubes - so in frustration I ordered a pair of Compass 38mm Barlow Pass
tires from Compass bikes. The ride is great, they make the Hunq look a
little bit less like a tank, and feel a bit faster (latter consideration is
purely subjective). They work very well on the tow path and, as I don't
intend to ride my Hunq off-road, I plan to stick with the 38s.
Hope this helps.

[RBW] Re: New Hunq 650b

2016-06-17 Thread iamkeith
I'm with you, Bill. But based on those other rumored sizes, it sure seems
promising that a 56 or 57 might be in the works. I've complained so loud
and for so long about that size being missing (I even had a pre-sale locked
in when the model first came out, but backed out over concerns), that I'm
afraid I'll have no choice but to put my money where my mouth is and buy
one. Looks like I need to think about selling some bikes...

Brings up a question for you, specifically, though: As you'll remember
helping me analyze, I felt like I had the exact same
falling-in-between-sizes issue with the 55 & 58 Appaloosas. But in that
case I think I'd have leaned toward the larger one, with the bike being
slightly more road than trail oriented. How come you got the 55, and what
do you think of the fit, now that you have it?

Regarding the Hunqapillar, the increased clearance news is good to hear
too! I suppose that if they didn't increase that, but DID lengthen the
chainstays even more, it would start to have too much overlap with the
Appaloosa. This keeps it unique and even more trail-ready. *One thing I
really hope happens is longer fork legs!* I don't know if this is for
sure the case with the current Hunquapillar (maybe Patrick can comment)
but, on my 700c Clem which supposedly has a Hunquapillar fork, the
axle-to-crown height is far and away the most limiting dimension in terms
of what size tire I can fit. Especially with fenders. Width could
probably accommodate a 2.8" tire, but the height just barely takes a 2.3.

What will the sizes be? On the instagram it claims to be a 53, and

I talked with Riv yesterday, and they said that the new 60 Hunqapillar
would have about 3cm longer chainstays than my original geometry 62
Hunqapillar. Sounds like it is mostly for increased tire clearance and
won't be Appaloosa long.

Chainstays don't look any longer, which I thought was also coming on the
Hunqs. I hope RBW didn't size me out of the 650B Hunqs because I would

[RBW] Re: Share Hunq Build / pics and ideas?

2016-06-10 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Kevin,
The fenders are VO Stainless Steel 60mm Fenders, 26" ATB. Good clearance
with Compass RTP and Big Bens. (I haven't tried knobbies. The terrain that
I ride doesn't require them.)

I have moustache bars on now. For me, it's a good compromise bar for
commuting and riding with kids. I do miss the Noodles on the Hunq-- maybe
I'll swap to them soon.

Also-- the Noodles are great with a front basket. With my short headtube,
the Moustache bar doesn't really work with front basket.

[RBW] Re: Share Hunq Build / pics and ideas?

2016-06-10 Thread Kevin Lindsey
I'm currently running drop bars on my Hunq and find they work very well. I
originally set the bike up with Mustache bars and a Dirt Drop stem; they
worked wonderfully and were extremely comfortable, but they were ugly and
slow in a high wind (due to the very upright riding posture). Chiefly for
aesthetic reasons, I therefore decided to go for drop bars (Nitto Noodles);
I think a Hunq is much prettier in that configuration, it's easier to move
in and out of crowded bike racks, and it seems to run a bit faster
(although I'm willing to concede that any perceived increase in speed might
be my imagination; even if not, the idea of using the words "Hunq" and
"faster" in the same sentence seems somehow ungrammatical). It feels as
comfortable as it did with the Mustache bars and, on the whole, I'll
probably stick to the drops.

Is this a 48cm? Thanks for the pics. I see you've done a lot of handlebar
combos, definitely cool to see and ponder my own build.

There are a few 31.8 clamp stems out now but mostly people just use quill ->
thread less adapters.

2016-06-10 Thread Philip Kim
Thanks for the pics, I've definitely admired that Hunq.

Oh yeah, the Gravel and Grind dudes are the guys setting up my Hunq. I gave
them my Jones bar set up, but after seeing James' set up I've been thinking
drops might be doable. But he has a nitto dirt drop stem and dirt drop bars
up high. I was thinking more of a roadie drop bar configuration with the
Salsa Cowbells. I've tried dirt drops and I can't get along with them for
some reason.

I just wasn't sure if the geo of the Hunq would mesh with drop bars. I
might just go with the Jones, but might change it later in the summer. But
pics are always still welcome.

I have a custom 31.8 custom quill stem.

Just curious, how are you going to accommodate for the 31.8 clamp diameter

I say Jones Loop all the way.
