Thanks, Laing. I was thinking not just of the initial pair, but of
potentially having to replace a single tire several years down the road.
But, I guess I could always just get another matched pair. It's just
money. Not likely to be a real issue, though.

 Tim,

I've been using RTP Extralights on my Surly Trucker DeLuxe (a
26"-wheeled LHT, for all intents and purposes). I find they measure out at
53mm (2.08") on Sun Rhyno Lite rims. What is the inner size of the rims
you'll be wanting to mount your tires on? The Rhyno Lites have an interior
measure of 22mm. The RTPs fit under Planet Bike Cascadia ATB fenders. You
really might want to give them at try, if they're what you're really
looking for. Of the two other tires you mentioned, I'd got with the Naches
Pass EL over the McClure. The McClure is the last of the "Compassela"
tires, good as far as they go, but just not as supple as any of the EL
 variants.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis tires rec request

2018-05-07 Thread Tim Gavin
Tim-

St. Sheldon's dogma is pretty conservative in the regard of "proper tire
width for a given rim width".
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html
(Width Considerations chart is the red/green one most of the way down the
page)

However, many folks have ridden many millions of miles on 2" (54 mm) tires
on 17 mm internal rims -- because that was pretty much all there were at
the dawn of MTB/ATB/Trekking bikes.

The risk with a too-wide tire is the same as that of an under-inflated
tire: risk of the tire folding over when turning aggressively.
Keep your PSI above ~25 and you shouldn't have that problem with RTPs on an
Atlas rim.

probably need to drop to the McClure to add fenders. My current usage of

What would your recommendations be for this tire?

 Thanks.

Tim,

I've been using RTP Extralights on my Surly Trucker DeLuxe (a 26"-wheeled
LHT, for all intents and purposes). I find they measure out at 53mm (2.08")
on Sun Rhyno Lite rims. What is the inner size of the rims you'll be
wanting to mount your tires on? The Rhyno Lites have an interior measure of
22mm. The RTPs fit under Planet Bike Cascadia ATB fenders. You really might
want to give them at try, if they're what you're really looking for. Of the
two other tires you mentioned, I'd got with the Naches Pass EL over the
McClure. The McClure is the last of the "Compassela" tires, good as far as
they go, but just not as supple as any of the EL variants.

Awesome info. Thanks everyone.

The current set is Schwalbe Marathon 1.75" on Atlas wheels and there seems
to be plenty of space.

The RTP sound great, especially if I can still add fenders later if
needed. I'll go ahead and order a set.

Thanks again.

I have a 98' or 99' Toyo Atlantis and the Rat Traps fit fine. No rubbing. I
also run 2.35 Kenda straight eights without issue. I run fenders too. Rat

[RBW] Re: Atlantis tires rec request

2018-05-03 Thread DarinM
Rat Trap's are more like 49-51mm IME. That is on 17mm internal width rims,
but I doubt they get up to 58mm/2.3" even on wide rims. I've read that
Naches' measure closer to 40-42mm so fenders are probably still doable.

Tim,
I have 2.1 Nano's on mine, and they are surprisingly fine on pavement and
of course have a bit of off-road tread, too. Great on paths or gravel.
The center of these tires is raised to increase road performance...and not
too noisy.

Having said that, I will def be trying a pair of the 55 Antelope Hill
Compass tires when they become available, supposedly late this Spring or

[RBW] Re: Atlantis tires rec request

2018-05-02 Thread Tim Butterfield
I should probably add some clarifying thoughts. I know both the Naches
Pass and McClure Pass EL will have a plush ride. Are the Naches Pass EL
likely to be sufficiently more plus than the McClure Pass EL to prevent
possible use of a fender in future with the same tire? I'm not planning to
get fenders but, if I change my mind, I would rather not have to get a
whole new set of tires to do it, not unless the interim ride is enough
better to warrant it. That's why I was wondering about those two.

Thanks.
