you'd have your

If this sale had come up 4 months ago, I would've have been totally down
for this set up. I greatly admired the sage Sam's but thought they needed
the contrasting cream head tubes. I really like how they have expanded the
tire width accommodation.

I really love my Appaloosa and have put over 15k miles in the past three
months. But it would have been a much harder decision if this was on the
table.

As tempting as it may be, I do not need to see a FIXIE DISKY MIXTE. Maybe
it would be cool to see one with 584mm wheels, which might be called a SIX

in Titanium, in which case you might end up with a:

Joe is probably right that Rivendell won't likely add disc brakes to a step
through, but as a bike mechanic the thing I dislike the most about most
step-through bikes is the rear brake cable routing. A "DISKY MIXTE" would
eliminate those routing workarounds by running everything down the
downtube. Even if Riv doesn't ever build one, I want to see more DISKY
MIXTES. Ahearne has done several. This should be a link to one of them:

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-31 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Not a Cheviot, but I have similar drivetrain plans for my Clem. Well, I
should more accurately state that I've been trying to decide between doing
the Paul Melvin dingle thing with a single cog and spacers on the stock
rear wheel and Silver double crank vs. a 1x9 using a spare crank (or
1-at-a-time x 9 with the stock Silver double) and 12-36 9sp cassette.

I'd need to get a spacer kit if choosing the former but have the Melvin and
all other parts sitting around waiting. Nothing wrong with the current 2x8
stock build but I haven't been getting much mileage lately and found
the limited gearing of a single or 1x9 will be plenty for my expected
riding and I'm catching the tinkering bug again after a 6 month self
imposed moratorium.

Ha! I don't think Riv is ever going to do discs, but if one of the youngsters
talked Grant into it, it would be on a stout TIG'd model like the Clem. Which
currently comes as a step-through with cantis, so I don't see the need to

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-31 Thread lconley
The Eno eccentric rear hub had to be positioned rear and down the get the
rear Big Ben to clear. I had to use center-pull brakes to get the front Big
Ben to clear. "Clear" means not touching. The rims are Velocity Atlas. I
moved the parts to my V1 Roscoe Bubbe and sold the Sam frame (only Riv that
I have parted with) - it actually has less clearance in the rear - I had to
true the wheels/tires to the frame to compensate for slight variances in
the tire. Clearance is a couple sheets of paper - need to keep the tire
pressure down also. Do not try this at home.

I have an orange canti-Sam and ride both trails and roads. I do switch
wheelsets often lighter Synergies with Barlow Pass ELs for roads and A719s with
Smart Sams for trails. The Sam handles both pretty well. I'd thought about
trading to a Joe when they first came out for the wider tire clearance but
liked the Sam better on roads. I think I'd prefer the Joe on trails and for
bike packing (although Sam handles it). If I'd been debating it at purchase,
it would have been a tough decision. Since I would have had to sell the Sam to
buy the Joe, I stayed happy with what I had.

One thing I found is the cx50 brakes are a must on a canti bike if you change
wheels often. Will suggested that and it's been a great purchase.

2017-10-28 Thread RichS
Regarding the Sam/Atlantis question: I have both. The weight isn’t much
different between the two but in my experience the feel and handling are quite
dissimilar.

The Sam has a lighter feel on the front. The Atlantis feels more “planted” and
a bit stiffer overall. Tubing, geometry and wheel size obviously contribute to
the ride characteristics.
51 Sam being 650B; 53 Atlantis is 26”.

The Sam is the most comfortable bike I’ve ever ridden. I’m tempted to bite on
this deal! The black and cream color combo is gorgeous. Cantis too!

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-27 Thread Joe Bernard
Jay, my Clem L is literally three months old (maybe four) so this is
ridiculous, but I *really* like the fully-lugged Chev, and that color at that
price came at a perfect convergence where I had just sold a recumbent trike and
a couple bags. BOOM. Plus I have some heavy sentimental value invested in the
Roadini color which reminds me of my first Riv, a Romulus.

Now I just have to decide what to do with the Clem. I have the cranks and front
derailer that came on it, which I removed for the e-kit, plus the Boscos and
stem I just replaced with a Jones Loop. The Chev will need road calipers and
short-pull levers, so that leaves the brakeset on the Clem. Oy, now that I
think about it, I pretty much just need another 650B wheelset to have two
complete bikes! ;-)

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-27 Thread Bob Lovejoy
A canti-Sam has always been near the top of my list and a choice of black
or the sage makes my head spin. That said, I just built up a perfectly
good and fairly cool Raleigh Randonneur and have an Appaloosa that is
perfect for me. I also have a more-than-perfect Cheviot. I think I am at
or in a good place.

Still... a great price and a great chance.

Question... Would people consider a canti-Sam something of a sportier but
still do-it-all bike versus the Joe A.?

So, from sporty to less sporty (and not considering the Waterford's or
customs or, I suppose, the Clem's):

Roadini
Sam H.
Joe A.
Cheviot

I know, at least assume, the Sam is better for a drop-bar set-up (though
mine is currently successfully set-up with drops) and also has a shorter
wheelbase. Does anyone know if the tubing is the same on Sam versus the
Joe? I know the forks are different - and probably stouter on the Joe.

I should also add that I believe each of these four bikes to be perfect for
their intended purpose. I was just trying to imagine the ride difference
between the Sam and the Joe.

Anyway, I have backed away from the keyboard a few times but wow(!),
something of a deal on a bike I have always wanted is hard to not consider.
Anyone on the fence and without new builds or bikes in the recent past
should really consider this!
