[RBW] Re: Clem Smith fenders?

2015-11-23 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Looks good, Tim. Last night I was reminded how much I love setting up
fenders as I decided to make my fixed gear more useful with a pair of
vintage Bluemels I've had lying around forever. Got the word from Rivendell
that my Clementine has been shipped. ETA is a week from today, but if I get
lucky... And my Cascadia ALX 27.5 Wide should be here by then. Someone over
on iBoB just put a pair of these on his pink Elephant. They clear a 48mm
tire and have a flattish profile, but they are definitely on the short
side. I plan to add a few inches with some yellow reflective tape and a bit
of plastic.

Anyway, that's a generous offer, no pressure tho if you want to go through with

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith fenders?

2015-11-20 Thread iamkeith
Tim, did you happen to take any photos of the bike with the silver B65s? I
like SKS fenders a lot, and was just about to order some. While driving
around lately, I keep looking at dark silver cars with matte. light-colored
aluminum wheels, find the combination attractive, and was thinking it would
look equally great on the silver clem. You have me hesitating now - though
I suspect its mostly a personal preference thing. I won't use anything
less than a 2..3 or 2.4 tire, so perhaps the fenders won't look as
dominant? Anyway - would love to see a photo, even if the fender is just
sitting there loosely.

2015-11-20 Thread Tim Wood
Hey Keith, you and I seem to enjoy fretting over bike details together! I was
laughing at myself as I literally have 3 sets of brand new fenders for my Clem
and I can't make a decision. Every time I rule one out I look at a picture or
throw them back on and change my mind. Oh the curse of indecision.

So I took some quick photos of the fender selections on the bike. They aren't
great but hopefully they give you an idea of what will work. I actually already
had the B65's packaged up to be returned but I opened the box again for the
shots and they aren't as bad as I remember. I'm fairly certain I'll end up
ruling them out so if you, or anyone else wants them I'll sell them for $55 and
I'll eat the shipping in conus.

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith fenders?

2015-11-20 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Those photos are helpful, thanks. I see what you mean about the
pinstriping--it's always been there, but I think it is different on this
newer model. My 65s have three black lines very close together (middle one
slightly thicker) right down the center. It has 4 other "stripes" but these
are reflective, almost gives the fender a faceted look. The new ones look
like they are all black, no reflective. Or are they all reflective, and
that is the way they photograph?

Anyway, I will be putting some yellow reflective tape on my black 27.5
Cascadia ALX 27.5" Wide. I think I will go for a "bee" theme;^) The ALX
{aluminum} series look a tad less shiny than the polycarbonate--at least on
the tiny pictures planet bike has on the website. Might go nicely with that
charcoal Clem if ordering a 4th set doesn't send you over the edge...

The 55s are definitely too skinny for a 50mm tire, no?

Also I find once racks, bags, lights, etc are on, fenders are not *quite*
as prominent. But still.

Well, I think the B65s look pretty good too. I think you should reconsider
but, if you're sure you don't want them AND if nobody else here wants them,
then I'll buy them. Give it the weekend to see. Otherwise, I already
had them qued up as part of an order from the mothership that's big enough
such that shipping will be free for me anyway. (They just got re-stocked
with them today) Hopefully three parties can get what they need, while Riv
makes another sale too. Either way, we'll get them off your hands.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post photos, too.

If you are thinking of getting the SKS fenders that Riv sells: On the little

I built up, I put p55s on there with Panaracer Pasela 26x1.75. I know it
will fit p65s, so I think I would suggest those, unless you are planning on
running relatively small tires, like mine, or smaller

As far as the mounting, I have a spacer (just a rubber plug I drilled a
hole in) in between the fender and the kickstand plate and another one in
between the fender and the seat stay bridge.

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith fenders?

2015-11-19 Thread Zed Martinez
I'm with Edwin. I have P55s on mine with 48mm tires (not quite 2"). They
fit easily and look great, but I too could've fit the P65's and I'm getting
some splash out the side in stouter puddles since the tire fills so much of
the fender. If I was doing it again, I'd get the 65s. Just be sure and read
Riv's note about the one fender not being defective because it's got a
space cut out of it, that's just part of the fender at that size to fit the
frame.

Rather than rubber plugs at the kickstand plate I just used a longer bolt
with a few nuts on it to split the spacing difference between getting the
wheel out and maintaining my fender line. On the 52cm I had to bend the
mounting tab on the rear fender's positionable bracket to match the angle
of the seat stay bridge's boss. Didn't really have another troubles getting
them in there, massive fender clearance is one of the Clem's strengths
after all ;)

I am going to try these new fenders (just came out this week) from Planet
Bike:

I was looking for something specific to 650B for optimum fender line. I
have a pair of the older B65 (with the cutout) that have served me well on
an old Mt. bike, but are getting a bit dodgy anyway. I will probably give
them a spray for a fun project later this winter.

I found out about the new Cascadias (these are the PB aluminum series, not
the polycarbonate plastic) on the 650 forum, and the company sales director
was kind enough to email me when they became available. I hope they will
look nice and function well on my 52cm black Clementine!

Yeah, the silver SKS works with some bike colors--I have an older set that
look good on a dark green bike--but they don't go with everything, and I
imagine they would look cheapish on a black Clementine. As for the
