New bike day times two Clementines! Comments: "I feel like I'm on a smooth
horse and can leap into the clouds!" "I don't even feel or hear the
shifting it's so smooth -- I just feel the difference in the pedals."
"Smoother and lighter!" "It just goes where I want it to!"

We'd sized up for them so they can grow into them and have these as their
lifetime bike if they wish (they are 12 and 14). They definitely fit just
fine with lots of room to grow into!

Colors: the black is beautiful and the turquoise stunning.

Deacon:

You are taking really good care of your children. Those are truly bikes
they can grow into for life. I'll bet in 30 years they're going to say
"Yea, my dad got that for me when I was a kid, & it's always been just such
a good bike."

My wife rides an Atlantis. When we were at Rivendell in the spring, she
mosied off on a Clementine, & came back with the comment "Hey, this is
kinda cool." No, we didn't take it home but still, a pretty good
endorsement.

Here is a link to my pictures from my visits to BB and RBW HQ last
weekend.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/30490050@N04/albums/72157658301010553

The Clems and Clementines were lined up too closely together to get good
photos of them, so I just took a couple of shots of the place and some
components that interested me, as I'm still collecting parts for my build.
(For instance, the Silver cranksets look pretty good (although they're only
available on the complete bikes right now), and the Bosco Bulmoose bars
intrigued me; I think I'll be going with them.) But there are some
Clems/Clementines in the photos!

My wife's 52" orange Clementine shipped, reportedly will arrive next Wednesday.
Can't wait, her motobecane mirage and mb-3 are both giving up their best parts
to build it up... First brand new bike in our household.

I liked the original orange from the prototypes better, it was closer to her
college, Tennessee's orange. But I'm sure it will grow on her. Our it'll get
recoated eventually. I must have missed the warning that their would ends up
being variability in the colors.

Her build is going to start off pretty vanilla;

Albatross cockpit, single Paul thumbie w/ silver shifter, cork grips
1x8 gearing
Fatty rumpkin tires
Shimano cantis
Canti mounted mini front rack with Wald medium

I do have some Paul levers and aWI Eno crank that may find their way onto the
Tine but I'm still debating it. I also need to add a rear rack.

Nice to hear people's build plans. For me, I am happy that I don't have to
think about a thing. Aside from adding the necessary accessories, I plan to
leave it stock (maybe tires at some point. Partly for fun to see the
difference). I guess I'm a bit tired of builds right now, fun as they can
be. In fact, that is a good part of the appeal for me with this particular
bike. Just take it out of the box and go! In fact if they offered a version
with fenders and dyno light system I would have gladly paid that premium in
a second. Racks, too, except for now it will have a Burley Moose Rack for
the Piccolo.

If you haven't encountered rinko before, it's a pretty cool thing. Doubt
it'll ever be quite so useful in the US, but heck, I had still planned to
upgrade to a rinko headset on my Clem anyway, so this was perfect. The
basic idea is to make a bike that can quickly be broken down to fit in a
special bag to carry on the trains. The headset uses semi-sealed bearings
so you can take the whole fork out for that process without losing them or
having to spend forever at the end readjusting it. There's a lot about it
online, but a decent overview of the practice if not this specific style of
headset is this one from
BQ: http://www.bikequarterly.com/images/BQ_rinko.pdf

2015-10-29 Thread El Sapo
Mark, my PBH is 86. I ride 23" mountain bikes. I prefer riding a larger bike.
The downside being That they have a 180 crank. I did the Sheldon Brown crank
calc once and it came up 172.5. I think that's what is on my medium Clem. So I
set the seat at 28" like my other bikes, and that was too low. Moved it up and
that somehow lowered me into the bike. I've had a custom fit bike, and I'd
totally forgotten how that felt until I got this one dialed in. It's my first
new bike in 30 years. I think it's going to be a classic. I can't wait to see
some pictures, better pictures, my photography is weak.

Cockpit: dirt drop stem and swept back bars so that he can reach. Cotton grips.
Shifting: simple thumbie for a 1x8 with Altus derailer.
Crank: 165mm, 36t and a chainguard.
Cassette: shimano 11-30
Wheels: basic wheels from Taylor wheels. Thank you strong dollar. Basic shimano
Dynamo hub up front.
Tires: Pasela 26x1.75 (the smallest I should go, said Riv, but I want to keep
this bike small).
Dynamo hub up front.
Brakes Avid v brakes.
Levers shimano mountain.
Fenders: p55 sks
Lights: b and m lyt up front, topline plus on back
Racks: working on that. I have a pletscher for the rear and a Gamoh porter for
the front, but might be too much.

Looking forward to getting this thing and taking wy too long to build it

Re: [RBW] Re: Clems have shipped!

2015-10-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
Those rinko headsets have a cartridge bearing that is sitting inside the
cups, similar, but not identical to Shimano. With Shimanos, the cartridge
falls right out. With 'normal' ball bearing headsets there's a ring with
ball bearings that you slather with grease and install. The headset on
your Clem will have the cartridge bearings in there already. That's why
there seemed to be a missing step.

I think it will be Bullmoose Boscos, 1 X 8, Compass Switchback Hill 48mm 650B
tan sidewall tires, 2 1/2 inch Woody's compound curve fenders, Stronglight 49
crank with a Bespoke chainring (with a vintage Dur-Alum chainguard if I can get
it to play well with the crankset). Haven't quite figured out the brakes yet
-- I want to use Paul Neo-Retros, but I'm not sure I can make the cable routing
work on the rear -- if not, I guess I'll put on Paul Moto-Lites; Paul Levers
either way. And a matching set of funky Electra saddle and grips -- gotta
defer to the gift recipient's wishes!

I rode the proto at the shop and it was different. I think it had regular bosco

light compared to my 80's MTB's. This bike has a comfortable vibe that says
slow down and enjoy the ride.
