Howard I actually called and spoke to the owner this afternoon about the bike rack. When I asked about the rollers he said it was a different company and that this other company sells them but doesn't actually produce them (the "other 1 up usa) I did notice they were both WI located companies. I kind of had the feeling at the time that it wasn't kosher to bring up the topic of the rollers although he was polite about it. My takeaway is that they are separate companies with similar/same names and I'm not sure why that is. Well that is interesting. I kind of wondered what was up with different websites. I had read, I think, on a bike forum that one was an international company and the other the USA domestic. Don't quote me on that as my memory is fuzzy. So if the second site is the "real" company, they don't offer the rollers? I've been eyeing them up for years and not bought them yet - but still interested. With all the rave reviews here for 1UP racks, I decided to go that route. However, there seem to be two websites. Just wondering if anyone knows what the story is? When I inquired, the inventor/founder said the other site is using his trade name without permission. This site still allows ordering, but it looks like the old version? https://www.1up-usa.com/ This one says not available until December, but with a much-improved version. (this is the inventor/founder's site) https://1upusa.com/ Based on such key improvements, I think I'm going to wait for the new version. I'll also give a big thumbs up for the 1up racks. After a nuclear war, all that will remain will be cockroaches, and the 1up racks. (Maybe a bit of hyperbole, but seriously, they make most other racks I've owned or used look kind of cheap and flimsy.) The racks can be adjusted as to where they hit the wheel. I don't think you would have any trouble with your Wald basket, as on my 700c sized bikes, the arms generally come up to only about 40% of the wheel diameter, and this could be made less by lowering the crossbar between the arms. The only possible trouble would be fenders, as the rack needs to make good contact with the wheels. They sell a fender adapter, which appears to just be a short section of pipe insulation so you can snug the arms up against the fender instead. That doesn't strike me as terribly secure, as you are putting all the force through the fender stays. (I have't tried it myself, but I've read several reports suggesting that they work just fine with fenders. So, maybe it isn't that big of a deal.) [RBW] Re: Hitch rack recommendations?
For several years, I've had the Thule Doulbletrack Rack that I think is a generation earlier that the one you are inquiring about. I think you can still buy it new here: https://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Bike-Racks/Thule/TH990XT.html?feed=npn&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyL6gydHZ1QIVBZR-Ch1vQAu6EAQYASABEgJF4PD_BwE I like it because it accommodates all of the bike types and sizes that I deal with and will work with fenders just fine. Sometimes, handlebars and saddles will interfere with each other, but you can slide the wheel mounts fore and aft to make it work in most cases. It also locks. I've driven with bikes on it from Tucson to N.C. and back and Tucson to Portland and back without issue. +1 for the 1UP. If you get the single one (which can have another one or two added for a total of 3), you don't even need to open it to get to the rear door if you have an SUV. Must be the same with a car, but haven't tested it. I leave mine on permanently and folded; no interference on my Highlander. I recently picked up the Thule Apex 4. Pricey but so far I have no complaints. It has a knob to tighten a wedge in the receiver. fits 1-1/4" or 2" by way of a bolt on adapter. [RBW] Re: Hitch rack recommendations?
I use a Transit rack that I got for $200 from Performance a few years ago. It looks exactly like the 2-bike version of the Hollywood rack that Weth linked to above, and I love it except for one thing: I have to secure it with a strap leading from the pole to the front edge of the trunk, tightened down to prevent bouncing. The strap comes with the rack, but it's a minor hassle to install and prevents access to the trunk while it's installed. The link to the Hollywood says it "features patented 'no wobble-no tools' hitch tightening system" which would make this perfect for my bikes, all of which have fenders. I'm going to look more into the Hollywood when I get a chance. Dave Indianapolis, IN -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I have the Swagman XTC2 rack which is similar to the Hollywood one but IMO the fit and finish on the Swagman is a little nicer. (I've owned both.) I've had no issues with fenders, racks, or mixte frames, and I've even hauled our Xtracycle Edgerunner (long tail cargo bike) with room to spare. Not as fancy as the Thule so it costs less. http://www.swagman.net/product/x-tc2/ It doesn't come with a decent integrated system to lock the bike or the hitch bolt. (Workarounds are, of course, available.) There's no mechanism to move the bike out of the way to open the trunk or tailgate, so I just plan accordingly. And I wouldn't use it with a carbon fiber frame. As a side comment, I personally would be reluctant to get the Thule rack you link. It's a great rack but I don't like how it doesn't fold compactly when off the car. Platform racks are large and oddly shaped, so the ones I've owned have been a pain to store. With lots of room, that wouldn't be an issue, but garage space for me is a rare and precious commodity. --Ed C. [RBW] Re: Hitch rack recommendations?
John, The fix for mixtes (and kids bikes and bikes with extreme-sloping top tubes) is a top tube adapter bar. They run $25-$40 usually. I think mine are from Topeak, the maker of bike accessories, but Thule, Allen, Yakima, and others make these adjustable-length bars with hooks or clips on each end--usually to go around your bike's stem and seat post, creating a top tube. I use one all the time on my 1972 Peugeot mixte, which also has a Wald "Pizza Rack" on the front. Our 2007 Prius has a 1.25-inch receiver (expect these to scrape on low-riding cars like a Prius) and we use a Double Down Four hitch rack with it. The DD4 scrapes a lot when it is installed due to the flat tongue and long extension but I still recommend Yakima products. I found these videos in a quick search--no product or content endorsements offered or implied: https://youtu.be/B7qXbvllr_g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcH9dk4Iot8 Jon Spangler Alameda, CA USA On Monday, August 14, 2017 at 10:03:07 PM UTC-7, Surlyprof wrote: > > I've been using a loaner where the bikes hang from the top tube. [RBW] Re: Hitch rack recommendations?
Thule Double Track Pro is a great choice for your bike. It is a better design than the Yakima Two Timer in the way the Thule clamps work. Also, Thule racks are EN tested to Euro standards so there is some baseline for comparison with strict standards. FWIW, REI Labor Day sale always has Thule and Yakima for 20% off.
