the formula for a bike shop is building a riding club around it, so you build a loyal client base. This is where you hire young riders to run the weekend rides and sell bikes during the week. Their technopassion sells, and they're the guys who make the dumb antique comments. When I was a teenager, I thought 40 was almost dead. the formula for a fly-fishing shop is the shopping district in a tourist town, and devote at least 70% of the floor space to women's accessories. The bike rides like it did pre spoke breakage, so that's a grand sign! I'd love to do more of my own work (I did 90% of my own work before my bludgeoned brain), but the price I pay in brain energy (far too limited for me) to do fine motor skills is simply not worth it. I'd rather spend time with my wife and kids than spend a few hours working on my bike and then needing a day or two to recover. So anything beyond a tire/tube change or patch or brake adjustment and I need a quality shop to work on it. Time will tell which shop I frequent. None of the local shops are at the level I'd like, so I'll ferret out which is the best option available. and then stick with them. Re: [RBW] Re: LBS Love...
I do all my own work so far, so rarely need a shop. Every now and then I special-order parts, but try not to. I used to go out of my way to order through the LBS, but have pretty much given up on that. Invariably the part that arrived would be different from the one that arrived, even if I provided an up to date catalog part # (QBP or JB). That's if they arrived at all. Nice employees at both of them, but I think my weird part requests are a pretty low priority for them. I understand minimum orders and all that, so don't begrudge them too much. Jenson USA is a pretty big internet retailer, and about 4 miles from my work, so I use their will-call for most parts now. Good people as well, very into the local MTB community. When I first got back into cycling I had next to 0 dollars. I was lucky to have the (late) great Refried Cycles two blocks from me I. The Lower Haight. Benji was amazing with price and ferrous of his time. He introduced me to Sir Sheldon and would let my brother and I watch him do all the repairs so we could learn how to do it on our own. I ordered many parts via him, until I moved across the Bay, he moved to the Castro and eventually to Chico and I headed to Philly. I have found a few other shops that have parts of that experience but nothing with the whole package.
