[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-21 Thread J S

If I listened to rivendell on what size stem to use it would quite a bit
longer. I opted fot a shorter stem and that works for me. Maybe you should
call Rivendell to see that the stem length was on the bike you ride, then
go down a smidge on a 60 to bring the bars closer. I think I use an 8cm
stem on my Hillborne, the folks at Riv suggested at least am 11. I know my
body. Good luck.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-21 Thread Tom
I'm 6' tall with a 89.5 PBH. Someone here posted that, if on the fence
size-wise, they usually size down for a drop bar setup and size up for a
swept-back bar setup. That is also my experience.

For those close to my height and PBH, the following list of Rivs, sizes,
and bar setups has worked for me. I'll happy to answer any questions you
may have about them:
- 58 Sam: drop (Noodle -- best) & swept (Albatross -- a little cramped)
- 59 Clem H: swept (Albatross, Jones, Bullmoose, Losco)
- 61 Roadini: drop (stretching it, 5cm stem) & swept (Albatross (regular &
inverted), Jitensha, Ahearne+Map, Wavie)
- 61.5 Homer: swept (Albatross, Jitensha, Wavie, Ahearne+Map)
- 62 Saluki: swept (Wavie, Albatross?, Ahearne+Map)
- 62 SimpleOne: swept (Albatross (regular & inverted))
- 62 Sam: swept (Albatross, Jitensha)
- 64 Atlantis - Toyo: swept (Ahearne+Map, Albatross)

Currently I only own the 62 Sam and the 59 Clem H (and an unbuilt 58 Hunq)
in swept bar config's. Because I wanted something that would comfortably
accommodate a drop bar (Noodle or a B135 Grand Raundoneur), and knowing I
could play with stem length and dial it in, I put my name on one of the new
57 Sam's...which has a similar-enough geo to the previous 58 Sam with a
Noodle bar I used to own.

Thank you for the pictures and stating the saddle hight! Super helpful.

good about buying the 60cm as well.

Hey all, first time posting here. I'm planning on grabbing a Sam
Hillborne frameset when they go on sale this month. It'll be my first
Rivendell. I decided on the Hillborne as a replacement for my 56cm Cross
Check, which has never been comfortable for me. The short headtube puts
 the
bars too far below my saddle.

I have a pair of Billie bars I'd like to put on the Hillborne for daily
commuting, grocery getting, and some light off road riding. I'd also like
to have the option to use drop bars at some point down the line.

I went to the Rivendell shop a few weeks ago to test ride a few bikes
and get sized. I'm 6' with a 92 PBH (long legs, short torso), and based on
the Sam geo chart, my PBH puts me firmly in the size 60 Sam range. They
 didn't have a 60 Hillborne around, so I instead rode a 57 Sam and a couple
of 61.5 Homers with different cockpit setups.

- The 57 Sam was set up with wide, swept back bars (Ron's Ortho
bars) and was comfortable. We did have to raise the seatpost up pretty
 high
to get the saddle in a good position.
- The first 61.5 Homer was set up with Billie bars and was also
comfortable. The saddle was pretty close to the top tube, however -
 there
was maybe a little less than a fistful of seatpost showing.
- The second 61.5 Homer with drops made me feel a little stretched
out. The saddle was raised up higher than ideal for my height, but the
 bike
belonged to a staff member who wasn't around that day, and so we didn't
adjust the saddle position. Part of me thinks it might have worked with
 a
lower saddle, shorter stem, and higher bars, but I'm not totally sure.

I left feeling like a 60 Sam would work for me, but I'm now second
guessing whether it makes more sense to go down to the 57 for a shorter
 top
tube length. However, the size 57 Sam has a suggested PBH range of 86-89,
which is 3cm lower than my PBH of 92.

Could anyone share if you've had a similar experience being in-between
sizes for a Sam Hillborne, and how the size you chose worked out? Or
 better
yet, is there anyone near Berkeley who has a 57cm or 60cm Hillborne you'd
let me test ride to nail down my size? I'd be happy to buy you a beer or
some other beverage as a thank you!

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-06 Thread Ryan Bolesta
Hi David,

I am 6'1 with a 91cm PBH and ride a 60cm Sam from the most recent batch
from 2022.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the size, but can't help but think about how
I'd feel in the 57cm. I've never felt "uncomfortable" on the bike, it's
definitely the comfiest bike I've ever owned, but it does feel a little bit
too big at times.

The two handlebar configurations I've had:

*Albatross with a 100mm stem:* This felt really good with my hands on the
grips, but I always felt way too stretched out when using the hooks on the
front of the bar. I probably could have swapped to a shorter stem if I was
still using this configuration.

*Nitto M137 (Drop Bar) with a 60mm stem*: This is my current setup, and
while it isn't bad, it isn't the most ideal either. I switched to drops as
I started doing more off-road descents in the area and wanted more hand
positions with access to the brake levers. I find it uncomfortable when
having my hands in the drops or hoods for any extended period of time. I'm
typically resting my hands right before the hoods (the "ramps" or "corners"
is maybe what this means in drop-bar speak) or on the tops next to the
stem. I've also done a little bit of finagling to shift the hoods closer
to my hands at the expense of having the brake levers a bit further away
from my hands when in the drops.

I don't think either setup was bad, just not ideal. The drop bar setup I
currently have has been used on several loaded bikepacking trips, and
countless 20-60 mile gravel rides in Colorado with huge elevation changes,
and I've never once felt like I was in significant pain from the bike
(other than my Brooks B17, which I feel hopeless in breaking it in), which
makes me think that I can fix some of these issues with minor adjustments
or a different drop bar.

I can't offer any perspectives on the 57cm Sam, since I've never ridden
one. Also, the two bars I've ran are not as swept back as other Riv
offerings. I think there are plenty of bar/stem combos I've yet to try
which would be perfect for my frame size. Overall I love the bike, and love
the versatility. I originally built the bike to be my commuter and
all-rounder, and have since transitioned it into a more-than-capable gravel
bike (that I tend to underbike into some chunkier singletrack by accident
at times) with a simple bar swap and adding wider knobbier tires.

When you rode the 61.5 Homer with the Billie bars, did you try other hand
positions than the grips?

Hope this helps!

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-06 Thread David B
Thank you for the responses, everyone. I'm leaning towards getting a size
60 based on all of the feedback. I do envision running the Hillborne mostly
with flat or swept bars, and so it makes sense to prioritize that with the
sizing.

Andrew, your observation comparing the stack and reach of the two sizes is
really helpful. I'm thinking the added reach/effective top tube length is
small enough that I could compensate for it with a shorter stem length.

Really appreciate all of your help. Would still love to test ride a 57 or
60 if anyone in the East Bay has one.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-06 Thread awen...@gmail.com
Hi David,

Bike Insights can compare these two sizes side-by-side for
you:
https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=638a1581423463001c996235,638a1581423463001c996236,

The 60cm Sam is 30mm taller in stack than the 57, but only 5mm longer in
reach. If you had to raise the saddle and bars by a lot on the 57, then
maybe the 60 would work better for you.

Hope this helps,
Andrew

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-06 Thread Bones
I’m 6’1 with a 91 PBH. My 60 Appaloosa fits perfectly with swept back bars.
I had a 61.5 Homer (newer one, for which the top tube is really long) and
it was way too much reach for drops for me (long legs, short torso, not
particularly flexible). I replaced the 61.5 Homer with a 58 and the fit is
perfect with 48cm noodles and a 7cm Tallux. I also have a 61 Roadini which
fits well, but there is almost too much stack, as there is not much stem
showing. I guess to summarize, it’s not always easy to find a bike in
Rivs’s lineup that can accommodate both swept back bars and drops
interchangeably. If you’re cool with drops on a stubby stem and less
standover, size up. If you’re cool with swept backs on a long stem and more
seatpost showing, size down.

I find Rivendells sizing based on PBH to oversimplify getting a good bike
fit. They are very smart but they also have their preferences and I think
most of the time their suggestions lean on that preference more than it
should. The smaller size will be way easier to fit with drops if you really
think that will be something you want to do. I agree that you "could" make
a larger one work too but IMO its easier to get a sweptback setup to work
on a smaller frame than it is to get a dropdown setup to work on a frame
thats a touch big. If it were me and I rode a 57 and was comfortable on it
with sweptback bars then I would go for that one. BUT the best situation is
to find a 60 and give it a ride.

2024-05-06 Thread Stephen
For your reference I’m about 6’1 with a 92 pbh and i ride a 60 appaloosa
w/swept backs, and would not want to go smaller. However i have no interest
in putting drops on that bike, I’m guessing sam might have a slightly
shorter top tube than Joe. hesitant to tell you what you should do,
hopefully someone has something you can test ride.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-06 Thread Tim Bantham
My recommendation is to go with the 60 Sam. You said you want to ride with
swept back bars and use it for mostly commuting and general riding. Based
on your described use case I'd say go with the 60 all day long. If someday
you want to ride the Sam with drops you could still do so with a short
stem.

My PBH is 93.5. I ride a 62 Sam and a 58 MIT Homer. The only reason I sized
down was because my focus for the Homer was going to be a drop bar road
bike for sporty riding. The 61.5 Homer would have been too much reach for
my situation.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne Build Post, with links and Celebrity Endorsements

2020-03-25 Thread Nathan Mattia
Yeah, I actually thought these were going to be friction shifters (love it
on my Expedition tube-mounts) but not so! I’m disliking it right now
because of some phantom shifts on my last 2 rides. I’m trying to figure
out if it’s just new bike cable stretching or if my shifters suck, or if
it’s the derailleurs that are at fault.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne build

2019-03-17 Thread Adam M.
Because of the sitting position (upright) and my weight (270 lbs.) I
compress the springs somewhat when I sit on the saddle, but there is no
bouncing while pedaling until I hit a bump or dip and the saddle dips a
bit. It is the most comfortable bicycle that I have ever ridden over
bumps. I contemplated getting a sprung saddle with only rear springs, but
I am happy that I went with the one that has the front springs as well.
This is a Cadillac on two wheels!

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne Finally Arrived

2017-01-05 Thread Justin August
I believe the 174 is the Fairweather Allroad bar. I think all dimensions are
identical to the noodle except for a shirter reach. I have one on my Saluki and
love it. Paired with SRAM levers it provides enough reach without feeling like
I'm falling over and includes the pull back towards the rider like the noodle.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne Finally Arrived

2017-01-03 Thread Ian A
Very nice indeed - I like the handlebar arrangement a great deal. In terms
of the Brooks saddle, I find if it points slightly up at the nose until the
buttock-divots form, then almost completely level it, that works really
well (this is a process of quite a few hours riding time). I also like the
saddle to be tension-ed quite firmly, but not excessively so. When all
factors are right, the saddle is as comfortable as a well-liked broken-in
pair of hiking boots.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne

2014-07-28 Thread Matt Beebe
You can distinguish between actual TT length and theoretical/horizontal
length. Because of the ~6-degree upslope of the TT on the hillborne, at
least on the the original metallic green ones, the size 56 had a 57.5

I ended up with the bar too high for my liking -- some 5-6 cm above the

I personally would very definitely test ride one if you can, though if
you don't mind very high bars, you have less need to worry about top tube

I never understood the claim about front wheel load variation caused by
using different length stems. Unless you're talking about a feet of change,
a couple of centimeters are not going to make that much of a difference.
For instance, merely moving from drops to hoods to tops, the front wheel
load will change. Scooting a bit forward or backward on the saddle also
means the front wheel load will change. Pedaling off saddle, the front
wheel load will change dramatically. And no one has so far claim any
detriment from these. So I don't understand this stem length fixation.

If one is claiming aesthetic detriment, then yes, I will agree that short
stems (100mm) do look odd.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne

2014-07-24 Thread lungimsam
Most people seem happy with the Rivendell method of sizing for their bikes.

*If this is your first bike*, just go with their sizing. You can always use
a shorter or longer stem, and rotate the brake levers little more forward
or back on the handlebars (if using drops) to try to buy the centimeters
you need to get the reach comfortable for you. If using other bars, then it
is even easier to fit for reach because you are talking huge sweep back and
rise like on the Albas and Bosco bars.

*If you already have bikes that you are comfortable with:*

Find out your PBH. Then call RBW and find out the standover height and top
tube length of the size frame they recommend for you.
Does the reach seem reasonable for you compared to what you know from your
existing bikes? You can always adjust it with a shorter or longer stem.
Will you have enough crotch clearance?

You can compare those dimensions with bikes you have previously owned and
see if you think that will work for you.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne

2014-07-24 Thread Patrick Moore
A dissenting opinion: I had a 56 and found the 59 cm top tube too long. If
you have a preferred bar and a preferred bar position with respect to the
saddle, there are limits to adjusting reach by adjusting the stem -- I
could not get the Sam's Noodle close enough to the saddle with a normal
stem, even with the Sam's relaxed seat tube angle. I could have used a 5 or
6 cm extension, except that would put too little weight on the front wheel.
I ended up with the bar too high for my liking -- some 5-6 cm above the
saddle, when even for a country' bike I prefer it no more than 2 cm above
saddle. Top tube length matters!

I personally would very definitely test ride one if you can, though if you
don't mind very high bars, you have less need to worry about top tube
length. Me, I like my bars where I like them -- it's not a variable but a
given.

The Sam would be an excellent candidate for upright bars, though.

gripsters, Albatross bars and IRD thumb shifters. Jared at Rivendell was a
great help as he managed to find the last 52 Sam in existence which saved
me from going to a 51. Honestly with the rise in the TT a 51 would
probably have been good for me as I found the 52 feels slightly larger than
the 54 Ram I used to own. Never underestimate the affect of the sloping
TT. But I am still glad I got a 52.

Michael, no it doesn't seem to create any extra stress. The drivetrain had
been on another bike before this, and I've used the concept in the past.

Ian, it wasn't that I wasn't taken with the first Hillborne. Had it for a
few years, actually. More like it was too small and the present bikes are
considerably different than the ones back then. Plus, haven't owned a
brake that takes sidepulls in 30 years. Oh, and can't discount the allure
of two top tubes. Or the significant birthday coming up this year factor.

Edwin, yes, they are similar. I don't have the second chainring. But have
thought about a setup like your.

Did get out on a ride today. My longest of the year so far. Okay, it was
a mere 24 miles, Took it over to Hiawatha Cyclery. Nothing fell off the
bike or made an odd grinding sound, so it should work okay. Glad I had the
studded tires on, but they are getting to be a chore. Hoping to put the
Schwalbe Marathon Racers on soon.

Yes I have a Hobo bag that I use when I need to carry something. I
like this frame it fits me well and feels pretty solid. The handling
is real predictablein fact I had a moment of inattention that
found me wandering towards the ditch and I caught it just in time and
the steering seemed to respond quickly but not too quickly if that
makes any sense. Just a pleasant sensible frame designI think I'll
put quite a few miles on it.

you otherwise happy with the Ribimos? The shape looks great. I've been

for a larger and sturdier round tire.

2012-05-06 Thread charlie
I agree Mike.the Ribmos are fine but the ideal tire for my weight
is between 35-38mm (actual) with the Marathon Supreme being the
current favorite. The Ribmo seems durable and relatively flat proof
but not particularly speedy. Honestly though I have no data to support
that and don't even use a speedometer anymore. I wanted to try them as
I used to roll the Panaracer Urbanmax tires in that size and they
were great tires, speedy feeling but with a reinforced sidewall. The
Ribmos are heavier though and not round but more of a oval cross
section with the center of the tire making more contact it seems.
These days I just ride what I have until they are worn out. Perceived
speed is important I suppose and some tires do seem better than others
but except for the extremes I think its difficult to notice a huge
difference among most of them. Love the new bike thoughstill
dialing in the bar height/saddle position and haven't had much time to
ride yet..maybe later today when the rain stops.

Panaracer Pribmo's 700x32 but I plan on something about 35-38 mm wide
eventually. I'm liking the mustache bar, its really nice for traffic
jamming on a commute. The brake levers are in a good position for
powerful braking and the more upright position is nice for that too.
The wide sprung saddle makes it all comfy and makes up somewhat for
the 90 psi 32mm tires. Its a pavement rider so I'm leaving it the way
it is for now.

powerful braking and the more upright position is nice for that too.
The wide sprung saddle makes it all comfy and makes up somewhat for

pictures and comments did two things: they pushed me over the edge of
my decision to actually spend that much on a bike (as opposed to a Sam
H. or a Surly Long Haul Trucker) and they made me at least briefly
consider a color of paint other than the clear coat. That red makes
for the best looking non-clearcoat Bomba that I've seen (though I
decided to stick with the bare steel look.) You certainly haven't
shirked on the parts for any of your bikes and I shudder to think how
much money those pictures represent, but the results are beautiful and
the bikes are clearly both enjoyed and shared, so more power to you!
(And in a more rational moment I realize I should count my excellent
good fortune that I can afford a Rivendell at just shy of 30 and not
bedrudge someone who has worked a few more years than I their Paul
brakes and Supernova lights!)

Anyway, good taste, good pictures, thank you for sharing them with us
and especially good on you for sharing the bikes themselves so that
others can enjoy them!

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne

2009-11-12 Thread Rene Sterental
I agree with the color comment. I too, found you Bombadil when searching for
pictures to try to decide what color to have my Bombadil painted with. I
too, found it incredibly beautiful, but in the end, chose to go with a more
subdued look and went with the darkest green available, almost black in poor
light, so that I could get the darker frame with the silver parts (Bearded
Peter's black Bombadil's look was incredibly stunning) and still get some
very subdued green in, for my son.

I showed my wife and my son the pictures and they all agreed it was a tie
and told me to make up my mind myself... just like Keven and Mark did at
Rivendell :-)

So, in the end, you're still going to be the only one with an orange
Bombadil, but I wonder for how much longer...

I'll post pictures when my arrives in early December.

Have you seen the orange in person?
I encountered an orange Hillborne on the road last Friday. (Sandia
Crest, NM) and is was stunning! Closest I've seen to the old XO-1
pumpkin.
Of course I'm a sucker for anything orange ;-)

Nicely done Dick. I must say you have one of the finest collections of
bicycles (at least the type I enjoy) that I have ever seen. I also
realize there is someone else out there that enjoys moustache bars as
much as I do. Out of curiosity why the 48 spoke wheels?

Title: New Sam Hillborne

Excellent. The more I see the Sam Hillborne, the more I admire it.It's one of those great deals that you hope people take advantage of while it's available. Kind of like the 2003 Romulus. Or mid-to-late-80's Trek 400's. Or the 1991 MB-4.-Original Message-
