[RBW] Re: Quickbeams on Ebay
Price is relevant... how many 68cm frames do you run across? I sympathize, as I tend to be just outside the stock frame range as well. In the end it's worth what it's worth to the buyer only. Consider the price point of the complete bike, which used to be $1400 (and now $1600). How much do you think the parts kit for the QB is worth? I don't think there are nearly $700 worth of parts on these bikes, but I could be wrong. $700 for a USED frame does seem high, but it's probably not far off the mark, depending on the condition (it seems to be in decent shape). The seller also offers free shipping, so that is worth something? What else can you get for $700 in a 68cm, steel frame with nice lugs? Running an internal geared hub on the rear would require you to find something that has 120mm spacing, or you'll have to cold set the frame. Most bike shops can do this for you $25-40. My QB is a 65, I find it to be pretty nimble, but stable. Seems to have that standard sport/road feel to it. Bob H. Good bikes in this size are few and far between, and you know because you've been looking for a while, so I think you should be willing to pay a small premium. [RBW] Re: Quickbeams on Ebay
I still ride my QB with the front shifting a lot. I like it. I don't ride it for long rides, because I need gears, especially low ones. My lowest with the shifting QB is 24 x 18. In the Reader description, the QB only had two front rings operated by a front derailleur with just one cog in the rear. The idea being single-speed riding with two separate modes with ability to shift modes while pedaling. After a while of use, I found that I would prefer three front rings, so that's what I have now, and I like it better. I removed the pants-guard ring. I do have a derailer in the rear, and it has no cable bolt and no shifting ability. It is only there to allow varying chainslack as I shift in the front. The reason this rear derailer is relevant to you is that this is a derailer that clamps onto the rear wheel axle, since there is no hanger on the frame. So far, there has been no problem at all with this derailer mount. -Jim On Sep 14, 2009, at 6:05 AM, ed k wrote: On Mon, Sep 14, 2009 at 2:17 AM, CycloFiend cyclofi...@earthlink.net wrote: Options have been tried - http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/quickbeam/#qbhistory Yeah, I like these ideas, just what I had in mind. [RBW] Re: Quickbeams on Ebay
I wouldn't necessarily consider it over priced. Kind of depends on the buyer. If you have the money and want a quickbeam I'd say go for it. Not like they're making more 68's. I've got a 68cm quickbeam and am a huge fan. Definitely nimble with 32's and stripped down. I hop it over all kinds of stuff and ride it in fast rides with guys on carbon, alum, ect. Nimble enough. I would agree with cyclofiend though that if your looking to put gears on it you might consider if it's really the bike for you. BTW - I also suffer from knee issues and was surprised at how little single speed riding effected them negatively. You know, you only have one gear (actually two on QB) but you pick it. I would say my quickbeam has actually strengthened my knees. Your mileage may vary. On Sep 13, 12:16 pm, Jim M. mather...@gmail.com wrote: Two Quickbeams on Ebay currently. One is a green 68cm. [RBW] Re: Quickbeams on Ebay
I ride a 68 Redwood and I know how hard it is to find tall bikes or frames and how near impossible it is to find a used tall Rivendell frame. Now that exhausts my knowledge except this: I email the guy selling the 68 on ebay. Here is the cut and paste of his response to me: Hi, Are far as I know the main difference between the geo. of the Redwood and the Quickbeam is that the top tube on the Quickbeam is 63 instead of 62. I owned both the Redwood and the Quickbeam, and the Quickbeam is slightly heavier but also more stable with a touring load. If you like the 68cm Redwood, you will like the 68 Quickbeam. I would say that the paint job on the Quickbeam is a bit more utilitarian. The only alterations needed to run front and rear derailleurs is that you have to buy a hanger for the rear derailleur (these can be bought anywhere or ordered, they clamp on to the rear drop-out. You attach it to the rear drop-out in front of the rear wheel axle. It's a bit fiddly to get the rear wheel off, but it only takes a bit of care, it's not really frustrating or anything. You also have to buy a cable stop to clamp unto the right rear chain-stay. These can be a little hard to find, but ebay could be your best bet... Suntour used to make them. Also check with your local bike shop to see if they can get one. I got one off of ebay. There are already cable guides for both the front and rear derailleurs under the bottom bracket (Rivendell use the same bb. as used on the Redwood). The front derailleur is no problem. Also, you will need down-tube shifters or bar-end shifters... if you use the latter you will need to buy one of the clamp on dual cable stops for the down-tube (Rivendell used to sell them). In short, it's not hard to do this, and everything shifts really well. No modifications except some cable stops that clamp on and the after-market clamp on derailleur hanger. Cheers, Karl Wilcox Hope that helps you. Finally, remember that rarity always results in unusual pricing because the market requires comps. If you need a tall frame and you lust for a Rivendell, don't let a couple of bucks chase you off of this or any other frame right for you. [RBW] Re: Quickbeams on Ebay
As always, a lot of great and useful info from RBW. Thanks, everybody. After careful consideration, I am. *not* buying the $699 QB frame. I know its size commands a premium, and so the price probably isn't too high. But I really can't use a single speed bike on longish rides (which are my preference). I need a range of gears. So, I would be forcing the bike into doing something it isn't really meant to do, despite what Jim Warren has done with gearing his QB. I may not be up to that much fiddling. Besides, I would need yet another set of wheels for the SS 120mm spacing, and yet another crank (single or compact double) in no time I'm in for $1000, while my triples and derailers and shifters and 8-speed wheels continue to sit around waiting for something to do. Just can't face it. I thought I might have a fling with that hot little Quickbeam, but I am gonna stick with the trusty Bomb, and the two of us will wait and see what the future brings us. [RBW] Re: Quickbeams on Ebay
Consider a 3, 7 or 8 speed internal geared hub for it. They're the perfect bike for such an adaption. The price is a bit high, but if it's what you want and you can't find it elsewhere... You can't buy a frame-only QB, so it's hard to compare this price to a new bike. Any opinions about the price point? My knees won't take a fixed- or single-speed, so would I lose a lot of style points for adding a derailer with a claw adapter? Is it even possible with those dropouts? How about a multi-speed rear hub? I love my Bombadil, but it's not exactly nimble. How does the QB ride? Thanks! On Sun, Sep 13, 2009 at 1:36 PM, rcnute rcn...@hotmail.com wrote: My kingdom for a 56!
