Re: [RBW] Re: The Official Introduction of RoadeoRosa

2024-03-09 Thread Jim Kramka
Thanks, Bill. I'm not ready to give up just yet. Originally, I built up the
Soma with Tektros and they were okay but I did not like their aesthetic and
how they stuck out so far from the frame. The Herse are much more compact
and elegant. So I'll buckle down and work through my troubleshooting
checklist.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Official Introduction of RoadeoRosa

2024-03-09 Thread Russell Duncan
I like Bill’s description of a mechanical varsity maneuver for setting up cantilevers. It took me forever back in the day to set up Mafac cantilevers on my Alan cyclocross bike. Trial and error and you may work out how to do it. In my experience with cantilever brakes at present  (n=1 bike), I set my Surly Cross Check at first with Avid Shorties. They were noisy especially when they got wet. I then tried V-brakes (something made by Shimano), which were spongy. Maybe I used the wrong levers and I can’t remember which ones. I finally went with Paul Mini-Moto brakes with a stroke adapter. This I did when I decided to use Campagnolo brifters. Paul did an excellent job in designing those, and even though they say they’ll work with Campagnolo levers, they were soft in my experience, finally engaging as the levers were near bottoming out. So, I installed the stroke adapters, which worked like a charm. They are not aesthetically appealing but they worked. Russell DuncanOn Mar 9, 2024, at 00:26, Bill Lindsay wrote:If you gave up on them and consider yourself an inept mechanic, then I think you've probably made the right decision.  Setting these brakes up is a varsity maneuver.  BLOn Friday, March 8, 2024 at 6:05:32 PM UTC-8 Robert Blunt wrote:Bill, I would also love to know. think you've probably made the right decision. Setting these brakes up is
a varsity maneuver.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Official Introduction of RoadeoRosa

2024-03-08 Thread Bill Lindsay
Jim

My assumption from the start was that given how not-adjustable Rene Herse
Cantilevers are, the ONLY way I'd even start was on a frame built by a
builder who builds frames for these brakes, and who knows those are the
brakes I'm going to use. Given the degree of difficulty I experienced, I
will not be backing off that assumption.

My protocol for these brakes on a Soma would be to first look it over in my
work stand for a good long while and decide whether the whole thing is
pointless. After I've looked it over in my stand for a good long while and
decided that it's likely going to work, then I'd have to ride the bike and
hear what noise(s) we're dealing with. Different subsystems have different
resonant frequencies and give audible clues for what to do next.

As I said with my bike, one significant mechanical move was to change the
rims.

I don't know if that helps

Hi Bill,

Congrats on dialing in the Rene Herse cantilevers. I have a pair on a Soma
Grand Randonneur that squeals. I'd love to know what your protocol was for
getting rid of the squeal. I have some ideas but haven't reserved the time
to try them out. I'm pretty certain that front-to-back toe-in isn't the

against the rim.

[RBW] Re: The Official Introduction of RoadeoRosa

2024-03-08 Thread Bill Lindsay
A few weeks late, I've managed to get out on a couple "shake down" rides on
the RoadeoRosa. I normally don't need "shake down" rides because my
process of pulling builds together has gotten pretty dialed. This one was
a lot more challenging because of the brakes set up. I had never used Rene
Herse Cantilevers and I was experimenting with fancy wheels that are
purported to yield superior braking performance. The shake down rides were
aimed at hideous brake squeal. These Rene Herse brakes are super powerful
and super light, but their design is super simple which means they are not
"adjustable" in the traditional sense. You can do things but it's a
process where you want to go very slowly in very small steps, and avoid
having to un-do anything. The stakes are high. Anyway, I plodded through
with successful results and came out the other side, learning a few things
on the way. At least for now, that fancy wheel set with the special
braking surface is set aside to try on a caliper brake bike.

I think next weekend, the 16th or 17th, I'll do Mount Diablo Summit #3 for
the year, and there's no reason not to do it on the RoadeoRosa. This
weekend I'm doing a 300k on a different bike.

[RBW] Re: The Official Introduction of RoadeoRosa

2024-02-21 Thread R. Alexis
Bill,

That bikes looks nice!! I personally prefer canits over calipers for
brakes. My "Road Bike" is my 1987 Schwinn Voyageur touring bike. I do have
some actual road bikes with caliper brakes, but prefer cantis. The pink
color really looks good. Didn't realize the Rene Herse brakes were that
finicky. I thought they employed a wedge washer or something to set the toe
in.

On an unrelated note, really enjoy seeing some of your machining and other
projects.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Re: [RBW] Re: The Official Introduction of RoadeoRosa

2024-02-20 Thread Bill Lindsay
It's close, but not quite. I was going for more of a mineral pink.

Drunk tank pink is hex #FF91AF
Mine is #D7A0A6

Put them side by side on an online color comparator website and drunk tank
pink looks like candy and my pink looks more like a rock. Or maybe like a
floral pink compared to a succulent pink.

The strange backstory is that I was thinking of a pink bike for a LONG
time. One of the saddle models that just works for me is the Fizik Arione,
and there's a great market for them on ebay because they come in colors
that don't work on many bikes, so they are cheap as hell second hand. I
stumbled across one in the Rapha Cycle Club 'colorway', which is
pink/white/black. I bought the saddle and commited that I would paint the
Roadeo to match the saddle! Subsequently, as the frame delayed and
delayed, I slowly was acquiring lighter and lighter stuff for the build. I
knew I could get close to 20 pounds WITH fenders, front rack, bell, pump,
and pedals, so I spent big bucks on the Arione 00 saddle to drop another 90
grams. I still have the pink, white and black saddle, but it's on a yellow

[RBW] Re: The Official Introduction of RoadeoRosa

2024-02-20 Thread Bill Lindsay
James asked:

1. Why 32s instead of something wider. I've got a large stable of bikes
and each has its slot. This is my "road bike" slot. It's a totally
conventional "road bike" by all contemporary "road bike" standards. At a
2024 "club ride", I can roll up on this and it'll be weird because it's
steel, and lugged, and has cantilevers, and has fenders, but aside from
that, it's a straight ahead "road bike". Also, I did not spec a Legolas
fork. I spec'd a Legolas fork crown.

2. Why RH cantilevers instead of long reach side pulls. I decided on Rene
Herse cantilevers on this bike because I felt like it (for several
reasons). Me deciding to do that does not mean I think wide-mouth side
pulls are inferior. Lots of my bikes have long reach side pulls

2024-02-20 Thread MoVelo
Bill

Fantastic bike! Congratulations! I hope it is all that you wanted it to be.
It certainly has been fun following your postings and I hope that you
continue to share your particular thoughts, skills and musings with us in
the future.

I've a couple of questions for you.

1) I'm curious about your choosing to mount 700 x 32s on a frame that is
definitely capable of wider tires. I understand your desire to keep the
bike fendered but still I wonder. I own a Legolas (I understand that you
spec'd the Legolas fork) on which I am able to run Rene Herse 700x44s. They
are admittedly a tight fit and would not work with fenders, but I am sure a
38 or 35 would. I was pleasantly surprised when I mounted them and they
fit. This has now become my defacto allrounder. Some of the RH tires I have
run narrow for me and in fact the supposed 44s measure out to 41.8mm. Other
RH's I use include 650x42 which measure closer to 38mm width.

2)Related to above, I'm curious about your specing cantilever brakes as
opposed to dual pivot or center pulls, both of which, in my experience will
clear 42mm wide tires without deflation. The RH cantilevers are elegantly
beautiful and if you wanted to use them for no other reasons I totally
understand.

Please continue to keep the flame alive Bill, cause now I know that pink is
not only the lightest color but might in fact prove to be faster than
orange.

Respectfully yours with wonder, amazement and pride at your musings

What a build Bill.

I said to Leah when she was considering the plunge for some bespoke bits
that as you ride more, your experiences forge preferences for particular
bike pieces and components. Each part that stands above discrete makes the
bike you build or upgrade embody those stories and are a record of your
riding like a scrapbook. Those who don't understand won't notice. Those who
do will appreciate the richness of detail and see quite a story narrated

Love that you opted for cantis on this frame. The mix of silver and black
components is spot on.

Did you get the tubing specs from Riv/Mark as well? Curious what was spec'd
for this.
