In 2003, I thought I felt a bit guilty about spending around $2,200 for my Atlantis. 10 years and thousands of pleasant miles later, it's hands down the best bike money I've ever spent. Another deal was the late 80s Panasonic DX-5000 from a bike shop close-out. For $300, I got a complete bike with Shimano 600 components. I purchased it with the intent of using the components on another bike but liked the ride handling so well that I rode that bike until purchasing the Atlantis. The best return on investment I ever had was trading a Selle Italia Turbo saddle for a Brooks B-17. The Selle was on the bargain table at my LBS. It was some overly flashy red / green / white with gold trim anniversary edition or something, but really ugly and about $10 (this in the day of good $30 saddles). I picked it up as a back-up-just-in-case but never even mounted it. Years later someone was looking for that exact saddle for a collection, hence the trade. dougP On Friday, February 8, 2013 9:20:27 AM UTC-8, Eric Norris wrote: Here's a question for everyone: What's your best cycling deal of all time? Most of my cycling purchases are thrifted. My best deals, though, have been the two bikes I bought at retail: my $1400 Quickbeam, and my $1400 Bontrager Privateer. The Privateer was on sale, after Trek retired the Bontrager bikes. It rode better for me than the Ibis Mojo, and exactly the same as an IF hardtail that cost twice as much. It's still a joy to ride. Maybe it planes, who knows. The Quickbeam was exactly the bike I'd been waiting for (except I wanted more clearance). It's still the bike that is my bike. Actually, my wife's Trek Belleville was a great bargain at $250, since I traded the rest of the cost in design work. Her previous bike was $25, and she rode it A Lot. I sold it for $100. My low trail Ross was $25. Most free bikes I get involve some time and money invested, and then are given away to friends and neighbors who don't end up riding them... I would have to say my 1994 XO-4 which I purchased on closeout in 1995 for something like 60% off. So for less than $200 I got a bike I have had for 18 years and it is still going strong. [RBW] Re: Thrifty Cycling
My fondest memories of a deal in the cycling world occurred sometime back in the late 70's when I walked into a LBS in Fort Wayne, IN, looking for some components to complete the build of a Turin road bike (from back when they had a frame builder on hand). I was caught leering at a set of Campy Record SP brakes in the counter display case by a youngish employee who came over to offer help. I asked him what the shop wanted for those brakes and - so help me, I don't know if he was confused or what - he offered them for something like $50.00. Needless to say, I snatched 'em up and walked out with a big smile. [RBW] Re: Thrifty Cycling
Buying bikes is usually a losing proposition for me (and I've bought a lot), but I've had a few good finds. Took a gamble on a crappy photo'd 80's Woodrup for a decent price. Came with Campy Cobalto brakes that I sold that about paid for the whole bike (also sold the frame, other bits, and still have the wheels). My best find though is probably my Bleriot frame that I bought from the Minneapolis outfit that was blowing them out at nearly break even prices. Can't remember the exact deal but I bought one pretty early after they came out and it was really inexpensive. Afterwards Rivendell got PO'd (understandably), and the dealer raised prices...and went away?? Anyway it was good for me. Great frame, my first Rivendell, and to this day, my favorite bike.
