[RBW] Re: Wanna Join? Meandoneering in Colorado
A scent free Highland Entmoot next year. I like it! Dates: in general, this is open for me, so whenever you are here works. For this year, there are town events July 4-6, 11-12, 19-20, August 2-3 that I will go bikepacking if at all possible. For next year, those same weekend are usually when those same events fall. But I'm happy to go at other times too. Grin. Body oder: Anyone whose coming I can give off group suggestions for going scent free. It's more a long term thing, but interesting to note that without grains or veggie oils in our diet there is no stink even without soap or shampoo. So if you've ever smelled yourself after a few days out and wondered how people used to put up with the funk back in the day -- they didn't. Grin. Options: Emphasis on singletrack, or emphasis on dirt roads -- your call. We can focus on Pikes Peak area or venture to various spots on the Colorado Trail. Basically anywhere you see a Colorado trip on my Flickr. Ideal is 2 nights/3 days but plenty of options for S24O. Final thought: like a good idea to send a guinea pig first to see in what condition they return. [RBW] Re: Wanna Join? Meandoneering in Colorado
When I was a kid we used to take a trip to the Colorado Springs area pretty much every year and my memory of Phantom Canyon is that it might as well be singletrack. Is it still a one-lane, rock and gravel road with straight stretchs no more than a few feet at a time? One of the basic routes would go from Woodland Park (well Green Mountain Falls, 5 miles down the Pass, but whose counting?), and use the R2G2 route as a general guide, meandoneering off it as desired, likely camping in the Lost Creek area in the middle(ish), possibly adding a day to ride Boreas Pass. Another route would cobble together various of the old narrow gauge train routes, including Phantom Canyon and possibly Gold Camp Road out of Cripple Creek, connecting in with Salida, then heading North into South Park (figure that out!). My rib needs a few more weeks to heal before I head out for this, so looking at late June-September as a timeframe if you are interested in a 2-3 day adventure with who knows what outcome (brain injury adds extra fun). If you are interested, let me know and I’ll discuss what I need in terms of scent elimination from soaps, shampoos, etc. With abandon, Patrick *www.MindYourHeadCoop.org http://www.MindYourHeadCoop.org* *www.OurHolyConception.org http://www.OurHolyConception.org* -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Wanna Join? Meandoneering in Colorado
I think you mostly remember correctly, though it's clearly a two lane dirt road for around here (though given the terrain, folks are often uncomfortable near the edges, so drive near the middle, making it one lane). It's as wide as it appears in old photos from just after it was converted to road from narrow gauge railroad track. It is 3-4% grade most of the way, so takes it sweet time going up or down with lots of switchbacks winding and twisting it's way through the landscape, as all those types of former railroad roads do. It is likely more known and trafficked now than what you remember, but still fairly low traffic if you hit is at the right time of the season (May or June, September, October). A great country bike road. still has that old wooden bridge with a turn in it too. Grin. http://www.goldbeltbyway.com/phantom-canyon-road. Not sure when it's gonna happen, but next time I'm visiting the fam in CO, you're on my list.
