Re: [RBW] Comparing Fabio's Chest and Large Saddlesack in use [was:Volume of LARGE Saddlsack?]

2019-01-01 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've been looking at the BagsxBird offerings and the Goldbacks look so well
thought out and slick.
I still like my old Riv/Carradice Barley bag but am always frustrated by
the buckles which require two hands to cinch and have poorly covered side
pockets.
Jay's website shows both the largest (Mega) and smallest (Niño) mounted on
his A.Homer Hilsen.
The Mega is listed at 26L plus 5-10L dry bag capacity if the long flap is
opened. I think all models feature the long flap. And lots of cinch points.
Good graphic representation of the bags and their dimensions on his site.

Re: [RBW] Comparing Fabio's Chest and Large Saddlesack in use [was:Volume of LARGE Saddlsack?]

2018-12-31 Thread Drw
I’m having a hard time believing a Fabio’s chest is 44 liters. I had one and
there were a number of things that I didn’t like about it. Mainly, the more you
pack in it, the weirder and more unweildy the shape gets. On my saddle, it
would almost turn slightly upside down when fully loaded. Also, roll tops are
kind of a hassle. I’m not saying that’s everyone’s experience, but it was mine.

Anyway, I’d check out bagsxbird by Maybe a former rivendel employee? I can’t
remember. He’s worked out a lot of kinks in the carradice style bag and I’m
loving mine. He has a mega version and it has a long flap too.

2018-12-31 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the comparo, Ana. I did own a nice Large Saddlesack and found
the volume a bit disappointing, compared to my Ortlieb Rollers and even the
Medium I'd owned before. If I am smart, I'll stick with the Ortliebs

2018-12-30 Thread Ana Candela
Patrick,

Besides what Patrick suggested of strapping stuff on top, the Sackville bags
allow for expandability with their inner flap and extra long straps, so only
the sides would be exposed with really large loads. I’m sure you could carry a
few bags of cheese puffs! ;-)

I’ve never used the Fabios chest bag, but it looks like it’s expandable by
rolling up the top, so you would have the top of your load exposed. If you want
to fit the volume you mention and have it covered and tucked in nicely, you
would have to look for a another bag instead.

Looking at both websites, not only is the Sackville more stylish and better
quality but cheaper, too!

Re: [RBW] Comparing Fabio's Chest and Large Saddlesack in use [was:Volume of LARGE Saddlsack?]

2018-12-18 Thread Patrick Moore
I've done that too, with all sorts of bags, but it's too inconvenient (for
me, personally) -- I want a carrier that I can shove things in, cover up,
and click or strap closed. And I'll bet that the family sized 2 gallon bag
of Cheez Doodles won't take kindly to being cinched down on top of the bag.
(OK, I don't eat Cheez Doodles or Cheese Puffs or what have you, but I do
like the occasional bag of tortilla chips or potato chips.)

Really, the pair of Ortlieb Roller Packers at 40 litres is entirely big
enough, but I am a not-apparently-recovering bag fetishist and I am telling
my story.

Patrick Moore, who has spent enough on various bags over the years to fund
at least 1 more Riv custom.
