Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?
I like my RTPs and 700x44s. I had one flat with the RTPs on dirt that turned into a terrible experience because I’m bad at patching, but turned into a good experience because I begged a tube off the only other 26er rider at the West Point Inn pancake breakfast. The Snoqualmies handled Bolinas Ridge down to Olema (very rough and jouncy) great. Philip (Real name: Joe Bunik. Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?
Hi Joe, My shaving technique is very Luddite. I bought some end cutting nippers, inflate tire to max and nip as close to casing as I can. I am left with a very shallow, flat knob. Better traction than RTP and seem to roll as well. Very good on hard packed dirt roads I ride a lot. As learned here- https://bartthebikeman.wordpress.com/2013/06/28/schwalbe-racing-ralph-shaven-as-a-road-tyre/ Needs a decent sized knob for the nipper to get purchase. I have also used side cutter, but the end configuration gave me better results. Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?
15 flats in a year! Oooh! Sorry, I'm being mean; I'll stop. Moving on: I use the 178 gram ~29mm wide 559 Elk Passes, on pavement and firm dirt and gravel, as I've reported too many times already, and this in the Goathead Capital of the Universe. Without sealant, these tires would be like the original Parigi Roubaix, where I got 5 flats within the first 10 miles, before adding sealant. But with sealant, they're bullet- -- or at least, thorn- -- proof and I have over 3600 miles on the rear of one pair with many miles left. That's a *178 gram tire,* my friends! Aside: I believe that relative to their much huger bulk, the lightest 700C X 60 Big One (the 440 gram one) roll just as well, at least tubeless; we'll see how many miles they give me. They certainly float over sand! On Tue, Jan 30, 2018 at 8:13 PM, rob markwardtwrote: > I've tracked my flats for several years. Can you guess when I > experimented with Compass tires? Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?
I'll add that, my RockCombo is my RTP bike and *IT IS A BLAST* to ride on Compass RTP. I haven't had any measurable change in my on-the-road flat frequency (knock on wood), though I did go through a nasty spate of valve failures with cheapy tubes in the past couple of years. I have switched over to exclusively using the Schwalbe SV18, SV14 and SV19 lightweight tubes and the issue has abated. I now also am a religious user of the dork-nut. =- Joe On 1/31/18, Joe Bunikwrote: > hi Tom > > Not that I need any more bike parts or projects, but I'd love to hear > about your RR shaving technique! > > I mostly roll on Compass (RTP 559x54, BJP 700x35, StmpP 700x32), GB > (Cypress 700x32), and Soma (C-Line 700x38) tires, and have just added > a set of the SnoqP 700x44 to the mix (which I can confirm are a tight > no-go on a 1977 Sekai 4000). > > =- Joe Bunik (not my real name) > (just kidding) > Walnut Creek, CA > > > On 1/30/18, Palmer wrote: >> Hello Lum, >> Tried to love Rat Trap Passes, both regular and EL. hi Tom Not that I need any more bike parts or projects, but I'd love to hear about your RR shaving technique! I mostly roll on Compass (RTP 559x54, BJP 700x35, StmpP 700x32), GB (Cypress 700x32), and Soma (C-Line 700x38) tires, and have just added a set of the SnoqP 700x44 to the mix (which I can confirm are a tight no-go on a 1977 Sekai 4000). =- Joe Bunik (not my real name) (just kidding) Walnut Creek, CA On 1/30/18, Palmerwrote: > Hello Lum, > Tried to love Rat Trap Passes, both regular and EL. Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?
No, I did not stop riding Compass tires. Why? Because I love their amazing to ride, feel, handling, wear, overall value (by my way of viewing it), and I do not experience more flats with them than other tires (but I ride them with lower pressures than it seems many are comfortable with). Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?
I've been a LoupLoup user for a while now. I took them off and tried the old PariMotos, because they were cheaper and lighter. Holy cow you think Compass are flat magnets? I got 5 flats in 2 days on a 600K. Or was it 6? I dunno but any more and I would have been patching tubes. And/or hitchhiking. I went back to LoupLoup Passes standard casing and I'm happy with them. Use Barlow Pass on the Redwood also. Happy with those too. Re: [RBW] Did you stop using Compass tires?
I stopped using Rat Trap Pass standard casing, 26x2.3 - they were nice, but I didn't have an epiphany riding them - they were expensive, and I felt did not earn their keep. I switched to Schwalbe Thunder Burts, and those tires are amazing. I stopped using Snoqualmie Pass standard casing, 700x44 - they were decent, but they were also not epiphany-inducing and didn't feel worth the premium expense, and I switched to a Soma Shikoro that I picked up at a clearance sale. I started using Barlow Pass, 700x38, and I will continue to use and buy them for as long as I have a bike that can run 'em - they are perfect. -Jeff Silver Spring, MD On Tue, Jan 30, 2018 at 6:40 PM, Eric Daumewrote: > I really like the way Compass tires ride, but I don't have any in my > current fleet. I really like the way Compass tires ride, but I don't have any in my current fleet. My knocks against Compass tires: - they're hard to mount, it takes several tries to get the bead on straight, if I can - they're expensive My Vittoria Hyper something tires feel 85% as good at 30% of the price, and mount up fine on the first try.
