Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-03-03 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
There are some (randonneurs) who find the lack of re-routing if you get off
course to be a feature, not a bug.

If you’re riding a brevet, it’s against the rules to ride anything but the
official route. For randonneuring, you want a computer that has only the
official route and seeks to have you return to it.

Wayfinding on the fly with the Elemnt is, IMHO, better than the Garmin. You
basically have access to the same search functions as the Maps app on your
smart phone. Want to find a local coffee shop? Find it on your phone, map it
with the Wahoo app, and upload it to the computer. Way easier than the finicky
data entry on the Garmin (at least, the 800 series, which is what I still have
on my travel bike).

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-20 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Totally agree with the mapping issues, although I ride exclusively on roads and
well-defined off-street bike paths.

However, requiring a smartphone for mapping could be viewed as a feature, not a
bug. Yes, I have to stop and haul out my phone to map a route to a new
destination, but in my experience it’s much easier than using the menus in a
Garmin.

Downside is that you can’t edit the route—ask to find such-and-such a location,
and it will find what it thinks is the best route. Input that route and divert
from it, and the Elemnt won’t adjust to keep you heading toward the
destination.

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-20 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
I have an Element. I think it's a *great *bike GPS computer, but navigation
off piste is not it's strong point, at all. If you're planning your route
ahead of time (with ridewithGPS), it'll be perfect. But if you're trying to
wayfind in a remote location, you're going to be SOL. There's no topo info,
you can't pan/scan in the device, you can't add new routes without a
companion phone with internet access. In short, improvisation on mtb trails
or off pavement is hard. The Element displays some, but not all mtb/hiking
trails.

When I'm on riding in a remote area, I use the Element in conjunction with
a companion map app on my phone where I can download maps ahead of time,
like google maps, MotionX GPS, or Avenza. These apps will place your
location on your choice of style of map. Having both devices is really
important if you need to improvise.

P.S. Just checked, and my Elemnt already has maps of North American and Europe
installed. If I wanted to go to South America, I would need to remove one of
those and install a new map. But for 100% of the cycling I plan to do in the
next few years, I’m covered.

Maps are already in the Wahoo Elemnt. You can download *routes* via WiFi or
using your phone, but the maps are already there.

The maps also cover huge areas—all of North America is one map, for instance.

worthwhile getting in and out of urban areas where paper maps are of
little use. Very helpful in finding our lodging most evenings. Some of the

Joey:

Sorry for jumping into this thread (this may have already been addressed), but
my Wahoo Elemnt absolutely does show offstreet bike trails. I ride almost every
day on the American River bike path, which shows quite clearly. A friend and I
rode across several East Bay cities on Sunday, and again we were using Elemnts
to navigate on bike trails.

Maybe there’s a setting you’ve turned off?
