Re: [RBW] barsack & lights?

2017-11-21 Thread Eric Norris
I keep a light on my helmet (Exposure Lights “Joystick,” but any reasonably
bright lamp will work) year-‘round. In blinking mode, it helps make me more
visible to motorists, and it helps light the way if I get caught out after
dark, which happens occasionally even in summer.

Re: [RBW] barsack & lights?

2017-11-21 Thread Patrick Moore
A separate but still closely related question: In your (2nd person personal
pronoun, plural, genitive case, otherwise stated as "y'all's" or even "all
y'all's") experience: where is the best place to place a very bright light
for moderate off road riding -- rough and sandy, but generally flat, with
some roots and gravel?

I know Surly says, at the dropout, but I've tried that and found it too
low. Presently, on my Matthews, sort of by default (because the system is
designed to have you mount your bar there) it is mounted on the bar just to
the right of the clamp, and I've found it fine. but I wonder if any of
youse have gotten better off road illumination from crown or mid fork
height mounting? The light is a K-Lite, the one with high and low (1200 and
600 claimed) and a 10 minute capacitor.

Noted about the 2 lights for off road suggestion.

Regarding light height, I've found that a two-light solution works best
off-road. One light on the bike, and another on the helmet to light around
corners. I keep the light on my helmet all winter.

Something to consider if you lower the light height and don't like it.

Re: [RBW] barsack & lights?

2017-11-21 Thread Tim Gavin
You could get an extender/adapter that adds another mount above the bars.
Like the Topeak BarXtender
,
or similar products from Minoura or others. These types of mounts aren't
elegant, but a battery light on the bar isn't elegant to begin with.

But personally, I have a rando bag on a Mark's rack, and a dynamo light
mounted to the tang on the nose of the Mark's rack.

Re: [RBW] barsack & lights?

2017-11-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Maggie: if your light is bright enough to ride by, it will be easily seen
by oncoming traffic even if it is attached at the dropout -- there are
little doodads that bolt to the eyelets and let you mount lights down
there. At fork crown height, no problem either.

This is interesting, less for the components than for the information about
lighting and positioning.

FWIW, 10 or 12 years ago, with the first LED battery lights, I'd attach 2,
one to each fork leg about 2/3 of the way up from the dropouts -- dual
beams! I never had problems. Now I prefer my lights at the crown if I can
arrange it.
