[RBW] Re: Mid-Atlantic 2016 Snow

2016-01-26 Thread Lungimsam
During the blizzard (Saturday?) I saw a guy on the news dressed in modern
looking kit with a carbon looking drop bar bike going down the road in DC
or Baltimore, can't remember which. May have been Va somewhere. Alexandria,
possibly? They briefly interviewed him. He had what looked like a Supernova
headlight on his helmet. He was just talking about how nice it is to get
out and ride, or something like that. I thought it was cool how he was
pedaling along on a non-optimized bike for the conditions and seemed to be
doing just fine. It may have been a modernish cyclocross bike, But it
definitely wasn't a fat bike. It was modern roadie looking. Tough man.

[RBW] Handlebar set-up swap

2016-01-26 Thread Adam
Greetings all,

I am looking to switch up my handlebar set up with a recent hand injury
(computer caused) and am curious if someone out there might be open to a
trade.

What I have- Nitto Mustache Handlebars, Shimano Tiagra Levers-
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/bl1.htm , Red (faded) cloth tape over cork
tape, bar ends corked as it's on a single gear (can be removed easily for
shifters), Nitto Dirt Drop Stem 10
cm- http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/st4.htm

What I want- Something more upright like albatross or Bosco with
appropriate stem and brake levers

Local preferred. I am thinking a strait trade but am open to other offers.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: [RBW] Re: joe appaloosa photos

2016-01-26 Thread El Sapo
That's a valid observation about the bosco bars lack of a forward position.
I've slammed my bosco bars down to their lowest possible position and I still
feel better with my hands forward of the grips on top of the brakes/shifter. I
thought I saw a bosco bar setup with some type of knob or something attached
right there where the bars dip. Something like that would be really useable.
I'm starting to think about putting drop bars on my Clem. I just need to clear
the bad skinny tire / drop bar experiences out of my head.

[RBW] Re: Mid-Atlantic 2016 Snow

2016-01-26 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Thanks Marty! The garage is a work in progress but I love having the space
for bikes and other projects.

My trail reconnoiter was pretty successful though I wish I'd found better
conditions. My main route along the Mount Vernon Trail looks untouched by
plows or treatment and impassable on my 26x1.95" studded tire bike. It was
still a fun outing though. And if I needed/wanted to go to Shirlington on
the Four Mile Run Trail I'd be in very good shape.

Mount Vernon Ave (different from the trail) is a secondary road for
Alexandria and is reasonably clear in both directions.

While the sidewalk alongside Rt 1 at Four MIle Run bridge was covered this
protected trench did provide decent access accross the way. It does end
abruptly and with no way other than a climb over 4+ feet of snow to get out
though!

XO-3, single speed via WI Eno hub with studded tires did just fine. Need to
do some handlebar wrap and trim some cables but felt safe. This was my
turnaround as I coudln't make way with out digging in significantly in this
much snow. If it freezes up it might be more passable.

Intersection of Four Mile Run Trail and Mount Vernon Trail... end of the
road for me as it is untouched. Looks the same in both directions
unfortunately.

Back the other direction on Four Mile Run Trail it looks like Arlington did
a very nice job with getting a plow out on the trail. I wish the Park
Service (NPS) did more with their responsibilities.

Agree with Deacon, a bit more speed gave way to more stable tracking and

[RBW] New Bike Day!

2016-01-26 Thread Amit Singh
Hi Everyone!

Here's a cheerful story. Please give a warm welcome to my dear friend Dan Woods!

Dan first moved to California and sold his car 3 years back - so he's been a
full time bicycle commuter and loves to ride in general. He currently rides an
aluminum frame "Motobecane" that's too big for him, a hand-me-down that was
originally purchased on BikesDirect.com. He loves his bicycle dearly, despite
problems with everything ranging from brakes, crankset, headset, handlebars,
brakes and shifters, etc. We did a complete overhaul and replaced everything on
his bike 6 months ago.

A few days ago I saw the message re: Bleriot for Sale posted by Eric Norris. I
contacted Eric on behalf of Dan and asked him if the bicycle was still
available, worked out pricing and pitched the idea to Dan, who was all for it.

Dan and I drove to Eric's house yesterday to check out the Bleriot. It was the
first time Dan had ridden a quality bicycle. He pushed off, rode a while and
returned with a smile on his face like he wasn't sure what just happened - was
he supposed to feel this good on a bicycle? Was this too good to be true?
Should he even be smiling or take this moment for reflection and be serious? It
was awkward. And joyous to behold.

While Dan was riding this bicycle it looked like the bike and him were made for
each other - it was BANG ON PERFECT. Wow. We made a few quick adjustments to
the saddle and handlebar height, took a tour of Eric's incredible bicycle
collection (phew, maybe the nicest bicycles I've ever seen in one place!),
settled on payment and drove back. I was going to drop Dan off to his apartment
but he asked if we could go back to my house so he could ride home. I obliged,
gladly.

After a few fender adjustments, reinflating the rear tire and a quick seat post
adjustment he was on his way.

Dan's text messages to me over the last 12 hours are:

"Amazing#!!!:%/6/=%/" "So fast. So smooth" "Serious style"

I asked him if he was going to sleep with his bicycle and he told me "That's
None of Your Business!"

Dan rode his bicycle to work this morning, and instead of locking it outside
his building like he normally does the Bleriot is in his cubical with him. He
sent me a picture.

He says this bicycle is a blessing and that he loves it.

Anyway, I just wanted to take a few moments to introduce Dan to the Rivendell
Owners Bunch, congratulate him on his new ride and wish him a lifetime of safe,
happy and amazing adventures riding his new bicycle!

Pictures to prove it happened:

Tony,
Great photos and update on road/trail conditions. In driving around
Kensington/Wheaton there is a great deal of plowing to be done for roads to
handle peak rush hour traffic.
Tom,
Sorry to learn of the flooding and glad you emerged relatively undamaged. You
got a lot of snow too!
Stay safe out there - the snow may have stopped but things are far from normal.

i.e., they've just never learned?

I'm guessing the several thousand American dollars in the price rather than

[RBW] Re: A Soma San Marcos (Amos) Build

2016-01-26 Thread lucero
Thanks!

I believe the fork styling was switched to a tight, low bend at some point
in 2015. I bought my San Marcos frameset new in April 2015, so I must have
gotten one of the last 2014 frames laying around. If I knew the fork change
was coming I would have held off a few months, but the banana bend is
aesthetically pleasing in its own right IMO.

2016-01-26 Thread LeahFoy
I love new bike stories! Thanks for posting this one. This Bleriot will not be
a garage queen, it's going to be used every single day just as Grant intended -
how wonderful! And after a week on his Bleriot, Dan will believe that no other
bike will do. I am just a bit envious of both Dan's excitement and the fact
that Dan lives somewhere that his bike can be used for most/all of his
transportation needs.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day!

2016-01-26 Thread dougP
Dan:

Welcome to the group & congratulations on getting such a perfect bike.
It's so wonderful when any bike can transition from one rider to another, &
especially such a win-win-win (I'm counting Amit's involvement as a win
too!)

Amit:

What a great story & how satisfying to be able to connect someone who needs
a bike with someone who has one for them. I'm sure Eric is pleased that
it's going to a good home. I especially love the third paragraph where you
describe the ride & the smile like he wasn't sure what just happened. My
wife had the same reaction the first time she rode her Atlantis. At 5'-2"
not much fits her, and she was test riding just to humor me. 5 minutes &
she came back with big eyes & said "I've got have this bike...now!".
Rivendell's just have that magic. Amit, you are now officially a
"Rivendell Enabler", bringing joy to the bicycling world.

2016-01-26 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
Cleaning out the cabinets. Organizing and slimming for a new rig.
Sales in the US please. Paypal preferred.

WTT: Ocean Air Cycles x Swift Industries Docena bag.
I wanted the Camo and chickened out, so I got the original Grey/Yellow

Would like to trade for camo, or sell @ $250 shipped. Its in excellent,
near new condition.

WTT: New Cambium C15 natural, for the same thing in Black.

Mavic Alpine XL shoes, new in the box. Size 8.5 although I generally wear a
9, these fit. $100

Merino Skins wool top. Picked this up on a visit to Rivendell. Never wore
it. Marked mens small, it's stretchy, but it's REALLY small. $25

Barbour International Waxed Cotton coat. Same as McQueen wore. Made in
England. Mens small/med. Marked 38, but is quite roomy. Fits closer to 40.
$250

Other assorted clothes, frames, stuff.

[RBW] Old Man Petersen's House of Ferrous Velocipedes and Vinyl Seat Tube Decals

That's a great sticker Zed. Just to be clear, was it made with Grant's, BSNYCs,
or both of their blessings?

BikeSnob's. No leaking it to Grant, the Snob asked for some to give to him
himself, since it was his joke.

I remember it, the OP wanted either a 58 or 56 as I recall, but I can't
find the WTB posting either...

[RBW] Re: Chris King Rear Hub

2016-01-26 Thread Garth
I realize the original message concerning King hubs has been removed, but I
read the warranty online and it does clearly state that items returned for
warranty claims must be prepaid by the customer. So as usual, know the
terms of the sale before you buy if this is important to you .

Myself, I know of few companies who really stand behind their warranty
without making one go through hoops of "exceptions" and "conditions" . In
the bicycle world I know none.

Most warranties though are not worth much more than their print when it
comes down to actually implementing it as they are filled with written
and/or unwritten terms and conditions. It's "lawyer speak" , which the
customer has no idea what it truly means . Written by lawyers to shield the
company from any loss . So most warranties are but for appearances .
