[RBW] FS: Pletscher Dual-Leg Kickstand

2018-07-28 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Like new dual-leg kickstand like this one:
https://www.modernbike.com/pletscher-two-leg-kickstand

Came with a bike I bought. Installed and used a few times by the previous
owner. Uncut legs, so it should fit any bike. All hardware except the little
rubber feet.

$30 shipped in the CONUS.

Note that I’ll be away from home until Tuesday, so I can’t ship until then.

Re: [RBW] Paris Bicycle Shops

2018-07-26 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Definitely the Alex Singer shop, at 53 Rue Victor Hugo in Levallois (a separate
city adjacent to Paris). The shop has been in the same location since the
1940s. If you ask, they will take you in the back to see where Ernest Czuka
built frames for some 50-60 years. Their supply of vintage NOS equipment is
definitely drool-worthy.

[RBW] FS: Keven's Bag

2018-08-10 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Looking through my closet and found this … Didn’t remember that I had it! Not
currently on a bike and not likely to be, so off it goes. The classic Keven
bag—holds a lot in a nice, square-ish shape that tucks nicely under the seat
and won’t hit your legs. Genuine Baggins Bag quality, made of thick canvas and
leather.

Nice condition—a bit of patina, but no tears or damage. Includes all of the
straps.

$65 shipped in the CONUS.

[RBW] FS: Brooks Saddle Bag

2018-08-10 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
I ended up with two of these, so one has to go … Nice Brooks bag in luxurious
“pleather” with leather trim. Very good condition with the exception of one
wear mark that will be mostly hidden when it’s on your bike and a few minor
tears in the lining on the inside (see the photos).

Works as a handlebar bag *or* a seat bag. If used on the seat, it will benefit
from a holder or stabilizer to keep it from swaying.

These went for about $150 new—this one can be yours for $60 shipped in the
CONUS.

larger light, which I have used for some (but not extensive) night riding. Glad

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?

2018-08-18 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yes. Busch and Muller makes the Ixon light, which uses 4 AA batteries. Nice
light that runs 3 hours on high, 15 on low. The low setting is OK for me in
dark places (our in the country away from streetlights); YMMV.

I’ve never seen them for sale in a US shop. Bought mine from a German online
store.

[RBW] RBW Emails Being Tagged as Junk

2018-07-08 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
I’ve recently noticed that Apple’s Mail apps (on computer and mobile devices)
has recently started sending many (most?) messages from this list to a Junk
folder. Ads about stuff for sale seem to be especially affected—the original
post goes to junk, but the replies to the list come through. Other than that,
there’s no readily apparent logic. Posts about cool rides and interesting
photos also get the spam treatment.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Re: [RBW] Latest Ride Video

Lum:

50 is young! I’m a little older than that, and I’m enjoying long distance
riding as much as I ever did (although I’m a little slower than I was ten or 20
years ago).

You should look into randonneuring. Rando rides start at 100Km (called a
“Popular”) and go up from there to the big 1200Km events. Pick your distance
and challenge and go for it.

Paris-Brest-Paris, the granddaddy of them all, is coming up again next August
(it’s run ever four years).

There are many randonneurs in their 60s and 70s, and riders well into their 70s
ride in and complete PBP!

Randonneurs USA (RUSA) is online at www.rusa.org You can
search their nationwide listing of official rides (held by RUSA chapters across
the US) here: https://rusa.org/cgi-bin/eventsearch_GF.pl

Re: [RBW] 650B conversion for my Road Standard?

2018-10-30 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
My Riv Road was converted to 650B by the previous owner, using Tektro 559
brakes. It’s a marvelous bike, and I love the way it rides. I have a set of
Synergy rims and am currently running Gravel Kings (38mm), which is the widest
tire I can fit in the frame. I enjoy the option of diverting off the paved
American River bike path and exploring a bit on the unpaved areas.

I haven’t had any problems with pedal strike. As noted here
 and
elsewhere, wider 650B tires have almost the same overall diameter as 700C, so
in reality there’s no appreciable drop in bottom bracket height.

No flats so with the Gravel Kings, which are advertised as being more
flat-proof than other tires (e.g. Paris-Motos).

Re: [RBW] Slightly OT PSA IndyFab/Hampsten Tournesol

Looks a lot bigger than a 54!

P.S. Try as I might, I just can’t love a TIG-welded frame. Call me
old-fashioned, but a steel frame should be either lugged (preferred) or fillet
brazed (second choice). I do have one TIG-ed frame, and it’s just fine, but
it’s a bike that’s built for utility rather than beauty.

Re: [RBW] Seat post slippage

2018-10-09 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Carl:

I had a similar problem once. Take the post out and feel around the inside of
the seat lug. You’ll be looking for a ridge or imperfection … and it looks like
you may have one on the left side toward the rear, based on the scratches on
the post. If you find anything like that, carefully file it down so it’s smooth
all the way around.

A ridge or high spot like that will keep the lug from holding the post firmly
all the way around, which can lead to slipping.

Good luck!

[RBW] Film Processing

2018-10-01 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Following up on the recent discussion about film processing, I wonder if anyone
has advice on mail-in processing labs. I’ve used TheDarkroom.com
several times, and they do a very good job processing

to getting the scans. No additional charge for black and white.

Anybody using a different lab that you would recommend?

Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for floor pumps?

2018-10-01 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Go-to pump is a Zefal HP Husky, but I also have a classic Silca. I would still
be using the Silca that I bought back in the 1980s if it hadn’t been
accidentally left by the side of the road at a race out in the country a couple
of years ago.

Silcas have the advantage of being reparable. You can buy the leather plunger
if it wears out (or just take it out and put a little grease on it in most
cases), and the hose/chuck assembly is easily available. Take care of a
Silca—and don’t lose it—and it will last forever.

[RBW] Fil Processing

2018-10-01 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jeffrey:

What would you charge to process and scan (no prints) a roll or color (c-41) or
BW film? Would it be $8 + $13 (for “prints or CD”)? Can you upload the scans,
or do you just put them on CD?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [RBW] Truing wheels question.

2018-10-06 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
It’s not that difficult. I recommend putting the wheel in a truing stand,
rather than in the bike (there are consumer-level truing stands available) and
going slowly. 1/4 turns of the spoke nipples. Don’t make big changes—a little
at a time until it’s true again.

Most of the time, a spoke or two will have gone loose, and all that’s needed is
to retighten it.

That works for me. If the out-of-trueness exceeds my skills, I’ll take it to my
LBW (local wheel builder).

Re: [RBW] Re: Truing wheels question.

2018-10-08 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
For the home mechanic doing a minor truing, the age-old technique of “plucking”
the spokes works pretty well. As the tension of a spoke increases, its sound
when plucked goes up in frequency. Plunk the spokes to find the ones that are
loose (lower tones) and avoid putting too much tension by getting the tone of
the adjusted spokes to more or less match the tones of the spokes around it.

[RBW] Lights and Tariffs

2018-09-24 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Story from today’s All Things Considered on NPR about tariffs and their effect
on Light and Motion, a well-known California-based maker of bike and other
lights:

https://www.npr.org/2018/09/24/651221317/u-s-tariffs-on-china-may-force-california-company-to-move-production-overseas

Take-home points:

—They make lights here from parts sourced from China and other Asian countries
—The parts they import are subject to a new tariff, but completed lights (made
overseas from the same parts) are not
—They are considering moving their assembly overseas to avoid the tariffs by
assembling the lights there and importing them as complete systems

[RBW] Film photography - subject matter?

2018-09-24 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
A little late to this thread, but ... I recently purchased a fully manual 35mm
camera (Leica, made in 1950, with a lens from 1940) to sample film photography
again. I started shooting film way back in high school, developing and printing
black and white photos in the family bathroom. Kept on shooting film when I
went to work as a newspaper reporter in the early 80s, and finally gave it up
for digital in the late 90s.

I love digital, and I'm heavily invested in equipment for that type of
photography, but for now it's fun to take photos and then wait, wait, wait
while the lab develops and either prints or scans the images. Very nostalgic
for me.

Here's a sample from the first roll of Triple-X:

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn4eOfEn_pR/

I plan to carry the Leica on a 200-mile ride this weekend, where the plan is to
set the exposure, turn the focus to infinity, and snap pics of the scenery and
fellow riders. I'll let you all know how the images turn out.

Got some new photos back from the lab today. Here’s a cycling-related example:

I could have easily gotten the same basic shot with a digital camera (or my
iPhone, even), but taking it with an old manual film camera makes it more fun.

Re: [RBW] Recomendations For Cycling-Specific Vehicle

2018-09-25 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
I bought my Honda Element for precisely this reason. Bikes roll into the back
with the wheels on. No disassembly at all. Carries a bunch of stuff, durable
and very dependable.

Unfortunately, Honda stopped making them a few years ago. But … they made a lot
of them, so you should be able to find one used. They all look pretty much the
same; the later models had some minor exterior changes that included a switch
to having the entire vehicle painted in the same color.

I’m planning to hold onto mine until gas goes out of style.

[RBW] WTB: A Bit of Fender

2019-01-20 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
I need a small segment of aluminium fender to use to repair one of mine. I plan
to cut out a piece and put it underneath my fender to keep a small crack from
spreading, so appearance is not a big deal. My fender is about 40mm wide edge
to edge (probably Berthoud, but I’m not sure), but if yours is reasonably close
in size I can adjust to fit.

So … got an old fender that you could sell a piece of?

Thanks in advance!

I get a kick out of Strava. My Wahoo Elemnt automatically uploads my rides to

Re: [RBW] Centerpull/Cantilever brakes and saddle bags

2018-12-18 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Depending on the height of your seat, the bag would have to hang pretty low to
be in contact with the exposed part of the cable. Even then, I would think it

Re: [RBW] Possible issue with Nitto Tallux stem and Nitto Albatross bars

2018-12-28 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
I know it sounds basic, but you’re sure the bars and stem are the same size?
It’s hard to tell by looking at them.

With long bars like the Albas, you’re applying a lot of torque on the stem/bar
connection, so it’s going to be a little harder than usual to keep them from
rotating.

Re: [RBW] Possible issue with Nitto Tallux stem and Nitto Albatross bars

2018-12-28 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Sean:

If nothing else works, get an aluminum soda or beer can and cut out a small
shim—enough to wrap around the bar. An aluminum can is about 0.097mm thick, so
wrapping it once around the bars will add about 0.2mm diameter, which might
make up a small difference between your bars and stem (the stem must be larger,
or the bars wouldn’t fit into the stem). If a full wrap is too much, cut it in
half or a little less. Tighten it up and test it carefully at low speed.

You could also try scoring the clamping area on the bar so it’s not quite as
smooth. The pointy end of a small file should work, or a scribing tool.

Re: [RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-04-01 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Given that there’s so much concern out there about whether motorists notice
cyclists at all, it’s nice to see that some drivers (see item #5) pay so much
attention that they discern whether we’re wearing a helmet and adjust passing
distances accordingly. I wish that was the case, but I don’t think it is.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights

2019-03-31 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
The only quibble I would have with the Supernova is that it has what I would
call an “American” beam pattern, which is basically a cone of light that shines
equally up, down, and side to side. All of the quality lights out of Europe
(think Edeluxe) have a cutoff pattern that shines down on the road and to the
sides, but not up (like the headlights on your car). A lot of the power of the
Supernova is wasted shining up to the sky (and into the eyes of oncoming
motorists and cyclists).

A friend has one, though, and likes it. He’s fond of the feature that turns the
three LEDs on in sequence as your speed increases.

I have Edeluxe on four bikes, IQ-X on two. All work very well—light years (pun
intended) better than the incandescent headlight I used for randonneuring and
PBP in 2007.

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-03-03 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
There are some (randonneurs) who find the lack of re-routing if you get off
course to be a feature, not a bug.

If you’re riding a brevet, it’s against the rules to ride anything but the
official route. For randonneuring, you want a computer that has only the
official route and seeks to have you return to it.

Wayfinding on the fly with the Elemnt is, IMHO, better than the Garmin. You
basically have access to the same search functions as the Maps app on your
smart phone. Want to find a local coffee shop? Find it on your phone, map it
with the Wahoo app, and upload it to the computer. Way easier than the finicky
data entry on the Garmin (at least, the 800 series, which is what I still have
on my travel bike).

Phil:

Here’s an idea. How about giving everyone a limit—24 or 36 frames. Shoot just
that and post your best pics. I enjoy the discipline of shooting film, since it
requires that you think much more carefully about what you take.

I’ve just started processing at home, so it’s just BW right now. Mattias

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for satellite mapping thing

2019-02-20 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Totally agree with the mapping issues, although I ride exclusively on roads and
well-defined off-street bike paths.

However, requiring a smartphone for mapping could be viewed as a feature, not a
bug. Yes, I have to stop and haul out my phone to map a route to a new
destination, but in my experience it’s much easier than using the menus in a
Garmin.

Downside is that you can’t edit the route—ask to find such-and-such a location,
and it will find what it thinks is the best route. Input that route and divert
from it, and the Elemnt won’t adjust to keep you heading toward the
destination.

Photos are just as they came out of the scanner; no post production applied.

This year, I'm planning to take my Leica iii (d), and just shoot film.
Probably more people than bikes, but i won't know till I'm there.

My challenge to y'all, is to do the same
 Make film pictures at NAHBS
Upload your best shots wherever, and post a link here
Talk about the pictures and the experience
I plan to tag my pictures with #NAHBSfilm and #ridebikesshootfilm

Sorry for jumping into this thread (this may have already been addressed), but
my Wahoo Elemnt absolutely does show offstreet bike trails. I ride almost every
day on the American River bike path, which shows quite clearly. A friend and I
rode across several East Bay cities on Sunday, and again we were using Elemnts
to navigate on bike trails.

Maybe there’s a setting you’ve turned off?

Re: [RBW] Re: Threadless Headset Questions

2019-04-15 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Try changing the height of your bars on the road with a threadless stem. If you
set it up correctly (extra length in the steerer+ extra spacers), it can be
done ... but it will take ten times longer than with a quill stem.

OTOH, it’s impossible to get a threadless stem stuck inside the steerer, which
has happened on several of my standard-quill bikes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Threadless Headset Questions

2019-04-15 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
You’re right—I don’t do this often. However, in 2007 when I was near the finish
of PBP and suffering from some pretty bad numbness in my hands, it was *so*
helpful to be able to raise the stem easily on the road. That took some weight
off my hands and allowed me to finish the ride (although my hands were tingly
and a bit weak for several months after).
