Re: [RDA-L] Unknown date
Gary, If supplying a date per 1.9.2 is not possible, then you can apply the 2nd paragraph of 2.8.6.6: If an approximate date of publication for a single-part resource cannot reasonably be determined, record *date of publication not identified*. Indicate that the information was taken from a source outside the resource itself (see 2.2.4). Re: [RDA-L] Difference between Introduction and Preface
You can choose the higher-level designator writer of supplementary textual content if you don't want to or cannot identify a more specific relationship. Dana, RDA 2.20.13.3.3 applies only if the condition at 2.20.13 applies: In some cases, the identification of a multipart monograph or a serial is not based on the first released issue or part (see 2.1.2.3). Re: [RDA-L] 2.20.13.3.3
The instruction only calls for an additional note for the latest issue consulted, not for every issue consulted. So, if you follow the instruction as written, you'd update the note each time you added a volume and either confirmed that no elements in the description have changed or you've added information about new, deleted, or changed elements. Applying this aspect would also be a matter either of cataloging policy or cataloger judgment; that note is not core in RDA. There is an LC-PCC policy statement for that instruction. If we can use the more specific indented terms, how were we supposed to know that? I wasn't sure if we are allowed to use these indented terms, or if they're just further (and more specific) examples of what is meant by the bold faced code. If we can use these more specific indented terms, I think it might be helpful if RDA specifically said that following the definition of a bold faced term (or you can use these more specific terms, or something to that effect). Using the example of the term author, I see that there are MARC relator codes for the more specific terms librettist[lbt] and lyricist [lyr], but there isn't a MARC code for screenwriter, so I would not automatically assume that I could use those more specific indented terms as relator terms in a |e. There also seem to be MARC relator codes for terms which are not named in RDA, such as Music copyist [mcp]. Are we able to use relationship designators or terms such as music copyist in a |e if they have a MARC 3-letter code, even if the term does not appear in RDA? 2. I've searched the list and couldn't find if these questions had been asked before so here goes. 1. We are cataloging a Great Courses DVD and course guide. We have the lecturer and course guide author in the 100 field. What should his relator term be? Is $e creator sufficient? Though he isn't the creator of the DVD.? He is a kind of performer and author.? Using $e lecturer seems silly. The presence in the 100 field also would mean that the name would form part of the authorized access point for the work, but this is not appropriate for moving image works (Great Courses DVDs are cataloged primarily as moving image DVD videos, with the course guide being accompanying material). For moving images works, only the preferred title for the DVD is used alone for the authorized access point for the work (RDA 6.27.1.3), so the lecturer would not be found in the 100 field. As a lecturer, the person would be contributing to the expression, essentially as a 'performer'. In the list of designators under 'performer' are 'speaker' or 'teacher'. The designator ' speaker' is the best fit, as RDA refers specifically to the delivery of a lecture (as opposed to a 'teacher' who is providing instructions or a demonstration). The lecturer is also the writer of the course guide, so that is a clear work relationship. Instead of a contributor to the expression, the lecturer is the Creator of a work, specifically an 'author.' Adding these two designators to the lecturer in 700 field would be the best fit for the two roles: $e speaker $e author 2. Related note: Can the relationship designator just be left off entirely? Yes, but the person would not be found in the 100 field because the description is primarily for a moving image work. A name in a 700 field can have designators supporting relationships to works or expressions in the resource, but the 100 field is reserved for allowable names that can form part of the authorized access point for the work. Re: [RDA-L] RDA Update History
There are two categories of changes in the RDA content of the RDA Toolkit: -- updates: major changes resulting from approved proposals to the JSC; -- releases: minor changes resulting from corrections and Fast Track entries handled by the JSC. So far, there has been only one update of the RDA content in April 2012 for proposals from the November 2011 meeting of the JSC. The next update will be in July 2013 for proposals from the November 2012 meeting of the JSC. The revision history in the Toolkit applies only* to updates. The final versions of the approved proposals are posted on the JSC web site as Sec final documents in the proposal series (see the specific proposals on the JSC web site). Documentation of minor changes issued as releases and minor changes in the updates are in the Sec document series. I post and then announce on RDA-L the Sec document for each release; the document listing the minor changes for the May 2013 release is 6JSC/Sec/8 ( http://www.rda-jsc.org/docs/6JSC-Sec-8.pdf). Earlier minor changes are documented in Sec/2, Sec/3, Sec/4, Sec/5, and Sec/7. No instructions have been renumbered since the April 2012 Update; some will be renumbered in the July 2013 Update. Judy K. * Including minor changes such as correction of punctuation, change from bold to italic, correction of typo in one word, etc., in the revision history would definitely add to the complexity of that record. Minor changes such as clarifying wording, adding an example, adding a glossary term, etc., are included for your reference in the Sec document series. Re: [RDA-L] Abridging statement of responsibility
Jim, The element being discussed is the Statement of responsibility relating to title proper (RDA 2.4.2). So, before you get to this element, you have already selected the title proper. Then, you follow 2.4.2.4: If a statement of responsibility relating to title proper appears on the source of information in more than one language or script, record the statement in the language or script of the title proper. If this criterion does not apply, record the statement that appears first. Also, I agree that if it takes too much time to decide which is first, I'd go beyond the core requirement (the first) and give all. My personal opinion is that giving all statements in different languages/scripts is important because the cataloger cannot know which will most serve which user. In such cases it might be best to say something along the lines of record the first statement of responsibility when it can be easily determined but give several when priority can not be easily determined. Re: [RDA-L] Most appropriate language (RDA 1.4)
Note that RDA 0.11.2 has general information about language and script. Judy Kuhagen JSC Secretary On Mon, Mar 25, 2013 at 11:18 AM, Heidrun Wiesenmüller wiesenmuel...@hdm-stuttgart.de wrote: Paul, RDA is actually quite clear on this matter. In this case (unlike the one I was talking about), it's not a complete element which is supplied, but only a part of it. The basic rule for this can also be found in 1.4 (Language and script): When adding data within an element listed above, record the added data in the language and script of the other data in the element unless the instructions for a specific element indicate otherwise. So, ordinarily it should be the same language as the rest of the element, but note the exception in the last part of the sentence. There is indeed a specific instruction for your case in 2.4.1.5 (Statement naming more than one person, etc.): Optional Omission: If a single statement of responsibility names more than three persons, families, or corporate bodies performing the same function, or with the same degree of responsibility, omit all but the first of each group of such persons, families, or bodies. Indicate the omission by summarizing what has been omitted in the language and script preferred by the agency preparing the description. Indicate that the summary was taken from a source outside the resource itself as instructed under 2.2.4. So, if the library in question has decided to use English as its preferred language, than the [and twelve others] or such also has to be in English. My personal explanation for this is that the [and twelve others] is seen rather as something like a note (which traditionally is recorded in the language of the agency), and not as a different way of transcribing the statement of responsibility. I'm not really happy with this language mixture myself. And it doesn't really fit in with a rule like 1.7.5 (Symbols): Replace symbols and other characters, etc., that cannot be reproduced by the facilities available with a description of the symbol enclosed in square brackets. Here, there is no specific instruction, so according to the rules you must describe the symbol in the language of the resource, although this will certainly often be difficult for catalogers. Maybe there should at least be an option in 2.4.1.5 to use the language of the resource instead of the language of the agency. Heidrun On 25.03.2013 13:30, Paul Davey wrote: I'm not quite sure if I'm talking about exactly the same issue, but this is something that is worrying me: (Also, I do apologise to be mentioning a MARC subfield, which I don't think purists like, but it's useful shorthand; also not to give the RDA rule number, but I don't have access to the Toolkit, but I'm sure readers will know what I mean) Assume I am cataloguing a record for a non-English language resource (in this case Finnish, but assume any language) but I am working for a library that wants records with English as language of cataloguing, ie value 040$b eng If I am creating a 245$c and I want to make use of the option that allows abbreviation to and twelve others what is the appropriate way of expressing that? [and twelve others] ? [ja kaksitoista muuta] ? The first must stick out like a sore thumb, and I wouldn't countenance it in the case of value 040$b fin, but I just don't know how to reconcile it with RDA 1.4. Paul Davey daveyp...@tiscali.co.uk In RDA 1.4, we read: When recording an element listed above as a supplied element, record the supplied element in the most appropriate language and script. (The elements listed are those that are normally transcribed more or less exactly in the bibliographic description.) Now I was wondering what might be a good policy for the most appropriate language. The LC-PCC PS for 1.4 doesn't comment on this point, although I think there can easily be different opinions as to what is most appropriate. For instance, according to AACR2 (1.4C6.), the probable place of publication, distribution etc. is to be given in the English form of name if there is one, whereas the German RAK rules (§ 144,3) call for giving such a place if possible, in its original language form. So, you'd have to use Florence according to AACR2, but Firenze according to RAK. The example given in AACR2 1.4C6. is [Munich?], and this example is still there in RDA 2.8.2.6.2. But taking into account that RDA examples are not prescriptive, but illustrative only, I think that RDA 1.4 would also make it possible to write [München?], if one believes the original language form to be the most appropriate. Re: [RDA-L] Statement of responsibility naming more than three persons etc.
Dear RDA-L people, After an email conversation with Barbara, I'm writing with some additional information, making the distinction between transcribing information in a statement of responsibility and giving authorized access points for responsible entities. [Barbara is traveling and typing long messages on her phone is not easy.) RDA doesn't say you can choose what you give in the statement of responsibility for the title proper. The basic instruction is to transcribe the complete statement. The optional omission at 2.4.1.5 is the AACR2 rule: if more than three, record the first and then a summarizing phrase. However, you can choose which entities to include in 7XX authorized access points in a MARC bibliographic record; those access points do not need to be justified in a transcribed element or by a note. Also, as Barbara wrote, a change to RDA can be proposed to the JSC. This sounds as if it were possible to leave out e.g. all names after the fifth. But on the other hand there is an explicit reference to 2.4.1.5: When omitting names from a statement of responsibility naming more than three persons, etc., apply the instructions given under 2.4.1.5. The general feeling was that although everybody ought to try and follow the standard rule (i.e. transcribe all names), it should be possible to use the optional omission for very long lists, if transcribung all names simply cannot be accomplished. I assume that a very similar idea is expressed in the LC-PCC-PS for 2.4.1.5 in the word generally (Generally do not omit names in a statement of responsibility). But I'm not happy that the only alternatives are either all names (standard rule) or only the first name (option). Why shouldn't it be equally possible to transcribe, say, the first three, five or ten names and then put [and x others]? This might be a more satisfactory way of dealing with longish lists than reducing them to only one name. Of course I'm aware of the fact that the only first name rule corresponds to AACR2. But still, I can see no reason why there shouldn't be more flexibility here. Am I the only one who feels like this? Ben, Re: Finally--I certainly agree with you about DVD's, and I don't really think RDA content/media/carrier vocabularies improve upon that situation. If anything they go backwards--under AACR2 it was common to code the 300 $a as 1 CD-ROM or 1 DVD-ROM, but under RDA we're supposed to record the extent of the resource by giving the number of units and an appropriate term for the type of carrier which leads us to record 1 computer disc. It has always been my understanding (or my hope) that these lists were not meant to be canonical for all time--that we should expect new terms to come into the vocabulary as people find new uses for it. I think that if content type is meant to categorize the fundamental form of communication in which the content is expressed and the human sense through which it is intended to be perceived then none of the existing content type express the fact that ludic material is meant to be perceived through interaction. Text implies static content (and anyways not all game are textual in nature--have you ever played Set? If not, I recommend it for any cataloger--in fact, I use it my cataloging class to demonstrate what facets are.) It also occurs to me that RDA 6.9.1.3 states, Record as many [content type] terms as are applicable to the resource being described so a computer game, for example, could be described: 336 $a computer $b c $2 rdacontent 336 $a interactive $b i $2 rdacontent Finally--I certainly agree with you about DVD's, and I don't really think RDA content/media/carrier vocabularies improve upon that situation. (Which currently cannot be answered, for computer games or otherwise, by the RDA content/media/carrier vocabulary.) I'm not sure it seems to me like less direct or less usual, probably depends on the environment (maybe in a public library it's a usual question?). But at any rate. You can't do that with AACR2/MARC GMDs/SMDs either, can you? Perhaps the right place to record something to answer this question is actually in a 6xx/LCSH $v form/genre heading? I know LC is doing work on revising the LCSH form/genre heading thesaurus too -- like I said, this is a difficult thing to make a generalizable taxonomy for. Perhaps that's the right place for there to be a 'games' heading (entered in a 655), as 'game' is really more of a 'genre' having to do with the content and the author's intentions for it's use, than it is a form/format/carrier having to do with the physical properties of the item, that the RDA vocabularies we're talking about focus on. This stuff is really tricky to encompass with standardized shareable general and universal vocabularies, it's probably not possible to do so completely (and nothing libraries have tried yet comes close either. For instance, trying to display or limit by whether an item is a DVD (let alone blue-ray vs standard dvd!), which seems to me to be a VERY common user need in contemporary libraries accross communities and types (public as well as academic) -- is a somewhat herculean task with our legacy metadata).

Re: [RDA-L] RDA Music Joint Working Group
Dear Jean and other colleagues, When RDA was being developed, there was not consensus in the music cataloging communities within the author countries about how to revise the AACR2 special rules on music to make them be more principle-based, to reflect the FRBR Group 1 entities, to reflect appropriate relationships, etc. As a consequence, most of those special rules were just moved from AACR2 to RDA. The JSC knew that more work was needed in this area. Since the release of RDA, there have been a few revisions to RDA music instructions. The goal of this new working group is to identify and propose more far-ranging revisions to RDA music instructions; they will make joint proposals for music cataloging communities both within and outside the author countries to consider for the ongoing development of RDA for these resources. [RDA-L] JSC web site not available
The website of the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA (JSC) has not been available since mid-June. Below is a portion of a message from the information technology people at the American Library Association; I'm including it in this message with the permission of staff at ALA Publishing. When the JSC website is available, I'll send another announcement to this list. On Sunday June 17st during a hardware upgrade, our web site host provider dreamhost experienced a massive hardware failure on the server hosting the JSC website. In addition there are also issues with the backup server as well further delaying the restore from a backup file. At this time, they are migrating all data to a new server. The server has a massive amount of data, so this process will take some time. So far we do not have an estimated timeline form the hosting company when this server will be back online.
