Re: [RE-wrenches] Grundfos SQFlex

2014-10-20 Thread Ron Young
Awesome responses thank you! And yes I did mix up the IO-101 operating voltage
with the CU200.

So because efficiency is important we’ll keep the CU200 in the system.

Client wants a large pressure tank because of garden irrigation so we're
looking at an 86 gallon model so pump will not cycle as frequently and pump
efficiency will optimize with longer running times. Aside from bulk and weight
problems of the tank I don’t foresee any other issues. Appreciate comments if
otherwise.

2014-10-20 Thread Allan Sindelar
Ron,
Brian's advice is sound.

240 vac is fine for the pump and the CU 200. The SQ series is rated 90-300 v AC
and 30-300 v DC, although the pump is happiest at around 90 v and up. If the
CU200 is already in the system and paid for, keep it: the diagnostics are nice,
and the signal circuit is nicer: without it you must independently control the
AC input.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Grundfos SQFlex

2014-10-20 Thread Brian Teitelbaum
Hi Jay,

You are correct about the CU-200. It has an operating voltage range of
30-300 VDC and 90-240 VAC.

However, the IO-101 transfer switch is another story, and I think that is
what Ron meant. Up until recently Grundfos was only importing the 120 VAC
version of the IO-101, but now you can get the 240 VAC version here also
(it's basically the European 230 VAC model).

One thing to note though with the IO-101 is that its max DC voltage is only
225 VDC (even though the pumps and CU-200 are good for 300 VDC), so make
sure the PV array it's connected to is below that.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Grundfos SQFlex

2014-10-20 Thread William Miller
Friends:

The IO101 will accept only 120 VAC into the auxiliary port. This is the
connector with the threads on the bottom of the unit. It has a label
indicating 120 VAC. This will cause some confusion. The CU200 will accept 240
VAC and it will allow you to use a float switch.

The IO101 will not allow a float switch and there are some idiosyncrasies as to
how it switches from solar to AC and back (or not).

Re: [RE-wrenches] Grundfos SQFlex

2014-10-20 Thread Brian Teitelbaum
Hi Ron,

What you describe with using a pressure switch and pressure tank, and just
running the pump with 240 VAC, is fine. You don't need the CU-200 to do
any of that, if all you are doing is switching AC. The diagnostics is
nice, but probably not worth the cost in this kind of simple setup.

One issue though. The SQFlex pumps are not exactly instant-on. There is a
slight delay between when power is applied and the pump starts. Just make
sure that you use a large enough pressure tank to keep the pressure from
dropping too far before the pump starts filling it. You may have to raise
the starting pressure on the switch a little above where you set the
minimum pressure, to let it fall some at startup.

When it becomes time to replace the pump (hopefully many years from now),
I would just go with a Grundfos SQ straight AC pump instead of the Flex
model. If you are not going to be using a PV-direct arrangement, there is
not much advantage in using the Flex pumps.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Diode Failure

2014-10-20 Thread Dan Fink
Corey - yes, nearby lightning can zorch PV array diodes en masse, and not
always all the diodes at once. Provided they are accessible and not potted
in epoxy DigiKey can provide replacements. When the module manufacturer has
gone out of business, getting the precise specs can be impossible, but
there's nothing special about bypass diodes, the usual products should work
fine.

Wrenches,
Since my previous post (see below) we have recovered the faulty modules and are
now looking to replace the diodes in order to make them functional again. I
have had no success sourcing replacement diodes from the original module
manufacturer, Mage Solar.
Can anyone recommend a source for replacement diodes?

Wrenches,

We recently were contacted by a customer who reported a lightning strike
close to his house. His online monitoring revealed that 30 of 35
microinverters simultaneously stopped producing power. On initial visit to
the jobsite we measured Voc on many modules - either 12V or 24V instead of
rated 36V. On a second visit we discovered that bypass diodes - either 1 or
2 corresponding to observed voltage loss - had failed on each of the faulty
modules.

My question is: Can anyone support the theory that a nearby lightning flash
can cause mass bypass diode failure?

Wrenches,

Since my previous post (see below) we have recovered the faulty modules and
are now looking to replace the diodes in order to make them functional
again. I have had no success sourcing replacement diodes from the original
module manufacturer, Mage Solar.

Can anyone recommend a source for replacement diodes?
