John,You did say that the Line tie LED was on so you must have it in Sell mode;OK.The INV/CHGR is likely in a Bulk charge mode(is the Bulk LED on?).Once the INV/CHGR has completed the Bulk charge then it will drop down to the Float charge mode(Float LED ON).Now that the INV/CHGHR is in the Float mode it will then begin to export(regulate the battery voltage at float level) power to the GRID.I will typically go in and adjust the Absorb timer way down just to do a quick test;don't forget to adjust the Absorb back once test is complete.Hope this helps, Louis.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Charging two battery banks

2018-11-12 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar

Chris,

When I do this for a client, I add a second inverter/charger
and make a completely redundant system. This way it can be powered from the
DC bus or AC trickle charged which is very easy to automate.

like to do is add a separate battery bank - perhaps a set of LFPs (like
SimpliPhi). He wants a set up where, when his Solar One batteries are full,
the excess voltage 'automatically' charges his secondary battery bank.

I
am wondering if a dump load controller would suffice (so when his Solar One
batteries are full, excess voltage is dumped to the secondary battery
bank), but I'm not getting much help from any manufacturers as to what
might work. Any suggestions?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Charging two battery banks

2018-11-12 Thread Ray
I don't think I quite see the advantage of that plan.  The HUPs do not
die with quick catastrophic failures like L16s often do. They usually
just slowly lose a little capacity each year, begin to use a bit more
water, and become a bit less efficient in charging.  How old are the
HUPs and what are the symptoms that lead him to think they are on their
last legs?

As far as the charging 2 batteries scenario, I suppose you could set
that up with a relay controlled by a SOC meter.  The Midnite Classic I
believe has that capability when used with their WhizBang Jr.  Diversion
load is a possibility as you thought, but it just sounds like a lot of
trouble.  He might get 5 more years from the HUPs, and by then the Li+
pricing will have dropped more.

If you do the 2 battery bank scenario, you also have to set up some
fairly high amp transfer switching, and figure out whether that would be
manual or automatic as well.  The closest I've seen folks do that is
using a Marine type battery selector.  It works, but no inspector is
going to ever let that fly.  LEt us know what you come up with.  I've
had a few customers want that over the years.
