Re: [RE-wrenches] Simpliphi Phi 3.8 48V Case Color

Hi Jason,

It looks like all the black casings are 12 or 24 Volt.

White 3.8kW @ 48V nom. are either AmpliPhi (with comms.) or SimpliPhi without.
They can't be mixed.

Not sure of the maximum number, but UL 9540 listing up to 3 x BOSS.12 with 12
batteries each.

Best regards,
Lloyd

Is there a difference in the batteries in a white case vs. black case? Are they
compatible in terms of paralleling them?

Secondary question - I can't find the maximum number of these batteries in
parallel. Is anyone aware of the capacity limit?

Thanks everyone, the person I started with a SolArk asked me to call them, so
I've left a message. I'll let everyone know what the determination is.
Bradley raises a good point about shutting down the back up loads panel. We
would like to have an outdoor accessible disconnect switch between the back up
loads panel and the inverter so that can happen more easily for first
responders. I have to go back and understand a few more things and will let
you know. Thanks again. Chris

On 11/16/2022 10:14 PM, Bradley Bassett wrote:
The issue as I see it is that the Tigo RSS Transmitter and the APsmart
transmitter are both rated to draw up to 800ma. The 12VDC output of the Sol-Ark
inverters is limited to 100ma. Since some have used this successfully I suppose
that means that either these transmitters don't really use more than 100ma, or
the 12VDC output of the Sol-Ark can actually handle more than that, or some
combination of both. If I owned a Sol-Ark I'd test this to see what the answer
is, but alas I do not. I design systems using a 48VDC to 12VDC power supply
(Online Components has a Mean-Well device for a reasonable price, sorry no link
from here) and a fairly rare IMO shutdown button (we have that) that has both
NO and NC contacts. This is needed because to shut down the Sol-Ark inverter
requires a NO contact that closes on initiation which is quite rare in RSD
initiators. And you do still need to shut down the inverter as well as the RSD
devices so that it does not continue to feed voltage back into the PV circuits
(I think). This also shuts down the AC output of the Sol-Ark which tends to
make the inspector happy. Since it also shuts down the inverter, that limits
the battery to its own circuits, does this count as a battery disconnect also??
I'm seeing some inspectors calling out for battery disconnects which is much
more problematic.

I wanted to happen as that would stop the battery charging when there is a loss
of utility power. I said I wanted the 120VAC source to be the back up loads
panel. After about a week of calls and emails, I got an email back saying to
use the SolArk 12VDC terminals for RS. I just emailed them a screen shot of
the SolArk manual that says not to do that.

At this point, I am asking anyone on the list to let me know how they wired the
transmitter successfully. Thank you for any guidance, Chris Warfel

Hello Wrenches,

I have an inspector who doesn't like my heavy duty square D disconnect loaded
with 20A Littelfuse FLSR RK5 Littelfuses for use as a OCPD and disconnect on a
PV circuit. I am operating below the 300Vdc rating for this fuse but I'm
having trouble finding documentation that states that this fuse is listed for
use in PV systems.
Does anyone know if these fuses have this listing for PV specifically? Its not
easy to find if they do.
Or perhaps a solar listed fuse designed for this disconnect?

If not, is there another disconnecting device that can work for this? I am
looking closely at the MNPV6-250 DISCO but again, the 300Vdc breakers that come
with this are listed to DC branch circuit protection (UL 489A, IEC / EN
60947-2) not necessarily calling out PV specifically.

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks

My question concerns the Radian battery terminal connections. I don't need nor

That means the battery-to-inverter connections will be exposed, unless I find

Do those OB snap-on terminal covers used with the FX series work with the

initiation device, should be all that is required."

That is what I have found most inspectors will accept, but not all. A strict
reading of the code does come to the same conclusion that William comes to, and
some inspectors will require that. The code is not very specific on where the
PV system disconnect should go. It seems to be mostly accepted to be on the PV
side of the charge control, but when I read the code strictly it seems to me it
should be on the battery side of the charge control since it is only a PV
device. Fortunately the PV side is more accepted because that makes things much
easier.

What I'm still having trouble with is the requirement for breaking both pos and
neg legs in the PV system disconnect unless solidly grounded which most systems
are not (690.13(E)). I see that most installers do not break both poles, but
only the positive leg, which is of course easier and less expensive. I've
quoted the use of dual pole breakers when possible, but OutBack does not really
call for that always, and if you ask about their 2 pole 300V breakers they (and
Carling) don't say they can be used that way. And if you do, you have to run
the wires in opposite directions for polarity. I've asked for clarification but
have not received it yet. Then there are the high voltage charge controls like
Schneider, where often one uses the SqD HU361, which can be wired in various
ways to meet the 600V requirement. It can be wired one pole for up to 18A Isc
for PV, or up to 30A if two poles in series, or one pos and one neg pole in the
circuit. The Schneider RS Disco does break both poles, one of the few devices
that make it clear. I'm curious what others are doing.

Ground mounts do NOT require RSS. We hashed this out years ago on the
Wrenches list, when NEC 2017 came out.

See Figure 690.1(B) Note (2): " The PV system disconnect in these diagrams
separates the PV system from all other systems".

Thus, the PV disconnect is defined as the transition point from the PV system
to all other systems, like battery or inverter systems. The installer/ designer
decides where to put that disconnect. I usually put it on the wall before it
goes into the building, and I have never had an inspector question that.

My first thought would be a small nick in wire insulation going to ground,
causing the fuse to fail over time.
We had a similar situation with a much larger system where the culprit was hard

Subject: [RE-wrenches] SolarEdge inverter blowing fuses

Hi All,

I am servicing a system that keeps blowing fuses on the AC side, although it
appears that everything is sized correctly. It is a SolarEdge SE11400A-US
inverter.
 Max continuous output current is 47.5A x 1.25 = 59.4A. There is a GE TG3222R
60A AC disconnect, and it is wired up with #6 THHN wire. The terminals were
tight
and there was no evidence of arcing or burning in the past. This is indoors,
and not
exposed to sunlight. No extra conductors are in the conduit.

But they say that they need to replace a fuse roughly once per month. Has anyone
seen this before? Could there be some kind of fault in the inverter itself that
occasionally induces extra current? Is there any way to tweak the settings so
that it
actually produces a bit more than 11.4kw? I appreciate your thoughts.

Cheers,
Dave

I will say that their tech support guy did at least try to be helpful, but the

less than ideal. Their response to a request for compensation was that they
would not be profitable if they had to pay for truck rolls for such a low cost
item. I really don’t think they GET IT. We’ve been in business for over 16yrs
and this one failure could easily have ended that run.

I cannot imagine we’re alone here. I was told by AP that their failure rate
was 0.2%. Now, I come from a reliability engineering background in petro
chemical/ big pharma where a 0.2% failure rate would be catastrophic. Can you
imagine that 2 out of every 1000 pills made could cause death? We engineered
secondary systems and multiple quality checks to contain catastrophic
consequences for components that had know failure rates higher than acceptable
values. A simple solution to this fire initiation issue would be a metal
enclosure instead of plastic casing. That still doesn’t really solve the
problem of extra connections though.

Hi All,

I am going to be working with someone who plans to completely electrify a boat.
The electric motor is meant to run on nine 12V batteries, or 108V. The motor
manufacturer recommends a charger that can run on 120V or 240V. But has anyone
seen a charger that can take solar power and directly charge a battery bank of
108V? The alternative that I see here is to have two separate battery banks,
one for the motor, and one for house loads. Then we would have the solar charge
a 48V battery bank, and then use an inverter to charge the 108V battery bank.
It seems inefficient, although that may be the only choice.

A separate but related question: what is special about a marine inverter? If
there is a 5kw charger for the battery bank, we will need a large inverter to
handle this plus other AC loads, and I am not sure if there are "marine"
inverters this large. And so other than concerns about getting wet, is there
harm to putting a Radian, or a Sol-Ark on a boat?

Cheers,
Dave

Wrenches,

I’m in need of some troubleshooting help on a newly installed system with rapid
shutdown. System consists 2 SMA SB5.0-1 SP-US-41 (RSD version), RSD devices are
APS RSD-S-PLC. Each SB is configured with two strings of 9. Modules are REC
Alpha 360s.

This system was fully functional for about 1 week before things went awry.
Initial symptoms were that one of the two strings read 0V 0A on the display
while the other read ~315V, 5A. The RSD devices output ~700mV each when in the
off mode (a nice verification feature). I’m reading the correct voltage - 6.75V
- on both strings when in off mode. Once the Sunny Boy comes on line I’m
reading around 10V on the faulty string and the correct voltage - ~315V - on
the other string.

The above seems to indicate that each RSD is getting sufficient DC voltage from
the module. Short of pulling each module and doing a visual check what else can
I look at? How do you isolate a faulty RSD device?

And as luck would have it, everything is functional at the moment.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] unfused disconnect before service disconnect

I'm looking to the hive mind here to see if others can weigh in on an issue I
am having with an inspector. Grid tied PV system, with a line side tap in an
automatic transfer switch. There is an outdoor utility required system
disconnect right next to the transfer switch. But there was not enough physical
space to get something that was service rated with overcurrent protection. So
we installed a QO200TR, which is a tiny switch that looks like a circuit
breaker, is rated at 60A, but does not actually have overcurrent protection.
Then just inside the basement is the service disconnect with the neutral ground
bond, etc. The inspector is telling me to bond the neutral and ground in the
outdoor unfused disconnect, and remove it in the disconnect in the basement.

I am having trouble finding a code reference. Does anyone know of one showing
that the unfused disconnect is not the service point even though it comes
first? Or is this not something that is allowed? We are on NEC 2017 here in NY..
.
Thanks!

Goats are definitely off, I found they ate everything except what you
wanted them to. Very cute though. The low profile "Robo mower" idea
has merit.

The best I've seen was a wild flower seed mix, that all grew only a
couple of feet high max. They probably needed some weed wacking a few
times a year, but much less than grass. Totally depends on the
location. On the wet side of Maui, you would have the array disappear
into the jungle in 6 months, never to be seen again. In the desert, it
might be sage brush after 10 years.

I worked on a project once that used 4" deep gravel spread over 160
acres. Total disaster in my opinion; think how many cubic yards had to
be trucked in. Vehicles got stuck in the loose gravel, it slowed
everyone down, and 3 ft high weeds were growing up out of it in 6
weeks. Then when you went to weed wack, you had gravel projectiles sent
flying into the glass.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] combining 24v and 12v systems

G'day and Happy New Year to All,

Recently came across this offgrid OB FX system. The first part is a 12v battery
system w/ 2 PV modules, 2 Trojan L16 batteries used to power a frig and
freezer about 6 years old. The second is a 24v with 3kw of PV, 4 Trojan L16's,
twin OB FX inverters installed by an HVAC contractor back in 2016. This was
their first offgrid project. Oh boy, lol. The client would like to add more
battery capacity to both. My thought here is since we are powering only a 12v
frig and freezer why not simplify the system by creating a single battery bank
and then tapping off of the 24v bank using proper fusing and creating a 12v
buss? Admittedly I live in a 48v world so I'm asking our esteemed colleges as
to options on how to address this.

Oh yeah, the installer is unresponsive (no surprise there) and they are also
having firmware issues with an old Mate 3 and would like me to install a new
Mate 3s but that's another issue I'll tackle when I head out to site.

Thanks All,
Christopher-

Subject: [RE-wrenches] 705.95(B) and Sunny Boys - current on Neutral?

Hey Folks,

So does anyone have a reference I can show my AJH as to whether there is any
current on the neutral of a single phase 240 VAC SB 7.7-40 inverter?

705.95(B) states:

Neutral Conductor for Instrumentation, Voltage
Detection or Phase Detection. A conductor used solely for
instrumentation, voltage detection, or phase detection and
connected to a single-phase or 3-phase utility-interactive
inverter, shall be permitted to be sized at less than the
ampacity of the other current-carrying conductors and shall
be sized equal to or larger than the equipment grounding
conductor.

Be great not have to run 3/0 wire to my dedicated PV subpanel with 5 SB7.7s.
At 200 Amps I could use 6 AWG according to 705.95. A huge savings in wire pull
hassle not to mention copper.

Are there any other practical considerations for those SBs to operate well if I
were to go that low with the neutral?

Anybody have any field experience with AJHs on this?

Thanks,

Jeff

They used propane I believe for a lot of years. I think Freon maybe in the

We are working with Turning Point Foundation a 501(c)3 to provide off-grid
power for their River Haven project which is providing transitional housing for
homeless folks in the Ventura CA area.

The site is truly off-grid and currently uses propane to power three
refrigerators and cook stoves. There is no space heating for the single
occupancy rooms as of yet. But that’s another problem.

We are looking to specify DC refrigerators and PV-powered battery storage for
the River Haven project. We are looking at the Goal Zero Yeti-3000 system (3000
Whr, 500 full discharge cycles, to 80% residual capacity) at a sale price of
$2,400 but are finding the extra cost of their PV modules quite steep. And
looking at other 36-cell (12 volt) modules, I can’t find anything for less than
$1.10/W.

Since Goal Zero is looking at the recreational market, I thought that there
might be o ther companies with comparable product offerings that are focusing
on other markets like developing countries.

Any advice would be appreciated and you may contact us off-line.

I would love to hear more about that install. Design, sense of equipment
quality and development (is programming and function well thought out and
implemented), availability, pictures, etc. are all significant questions.
Thanks for the offer!

Does anyone know anything about that market? I've searched the archives and
see no recent references, and the only thing I can find on the web are old
Uni-solar modules on Amazon.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Generator backfeeding enphase?

2015-10-20 Thread Lloyd Hoffstatter
We have tied in the PV to operate when the generator is operating, but only on
a very large generator when the PV output was very small compared to both
generator output and load (in which case it apparently looked like a reduction
in load the to the genset, and actually saved some fuel). But I agree that
there is significant potential for damage to the generator controls, etc., and
would not validate or recommend it.

Solectria has a nice white paper on the subject:

http://solarprofessional.com/articles/products-equipment/inverters/q-a-interaction-of-grid-direct-inverters-with-backup

Also, discussions we’ve had with Enphase have been that it may be possible but
would void the inverter warranty, which may well be the case with other
inverter manufacturers.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Rooftop DC disconnects

2015-09-24 Thread Lloyd Hoffstatter
Wrenches,

UL has done testing on various materials for use as array covers, and lists
their results. While perhaps not too practical as a means of shutting down a
working system, this can be one of firefighters’ only effective methods when a
fire has occurred and has damaged modules until PV pros arrive to disable
system (UL tests have also shown destroyed modules still can produce high
voltage).

<will...@millersolar.com<mailto:will...@millersolar.com>> wrote:
Dear Fellow Wrenches

Below is a design conundrum that may resonate with some of you:

We are finalizing a design for an off-grid residential system. The customer
insist the PV should be on the roof and pre-installed a 1-1/4” PVC conduit from
his roof to a crawl space, in anticipation of a solar install. This created
real problems, because we all know we can’t pull PV source or output circuits
in (or now, on) the envelopes of habitable buildings.

There was no practical way to replace the PVC. We contrived a method to sleeve
¾” liquid-tight through the 1-1/4” PVC to the crawl space, continuing on with
EMT. This is the largest metallic conduit we could fit. The distance was
greater than 10 feet so we couldn’t use EMT. Due to the conduit size
restriction, we upgraded to Morningstar 600 volt charge controllers, allowing
us to reduce conductor size.

(As a sidebar, although the Morningstar is listed as a 600 volt charge
controller, we have found no circumstance were we could take advantage of that
high a voltage. With the currently available high wattage modules, by the time
we added enough in series to get to 600 volts, we were well beyond the wattage
capabilities of the controller. For sake of design considerations, I suggest
one regard these units as ~300 volt charge controllers.)

We now have plans for 300 volt PV feeders running down an interior wall and
under the house, with no roof-top disconnecting means. It is my understanding
none are required. I am not comfortable with this.

In this scenario, there is no safe way to replace either of the two Morningstar
controllers. Should someone drill through or damage the EMT in the wall or
under the floor, there would be no way to turn off the feeder.

I don’t like putting HU361RBs on a roof. They must remain vertical and so they
stick up too high and are hard to provide mounting for. Sola-deck units are
another option, but they require integrating with shingles, not practical on
this job or many others. I finally settled on a DC-Sunvolt PV-X16A-4X-RG
disconnect as a possible solution. At $216 it is not out of range. The unit
will provide means to turn off the feeders for service. I will report back on
my impressions of the unit.

To distill this scenario, I don’t believe the code requires a disconnect, but I
feel morally obligated to install one. I’d be interested in verification of
the code interpretation and others response to similar situations.

I found no other options for rooftop disconnecting means that would be small,
reasonably priced and not present a high profile. If there are products I
don’t know about, I would be most grateful to receive your input.

While researching the hardware I stumbled upon this article, linked below. It
seems to present a real dilemma, but I am not convinced. Please remain
skeptical

Re: [RE-wrenches] Rooftop DC disconnects

2015-09-24 Thread Lloyd Hoffstatter
Thanks Glenn, that’s the one – there are also some UL videos showing the tests
and the results, sobering yet valuable information.

Under the NY-Sun program, we are both training and listening to firefighters in
the attempt to provide practical information for working around PV systems and
ultimately how to provide safety in the aftermath of an event. As shown in the
UL report, 4 or 6 mill black plastic is opaque enough to provide voltage
reduction to safe levels when fully covering the array. For fire companies
that already carry clear plastic and clamps to cover venting skylights, the
switch to black is a simple and inexpensive example of same.

Best regards,

Lloyd Hoffstatter

Interesting. I'd like to get a hold of those test results.

It is not always practical, but I have never had an issue using opaque
black-out type tarps (of course - testing for voltage is a critical safety
step). The flimsy blue stuff will definitely not work. At one time I had a
sports field cover, but it was too heavy to manage. Then again, we deal with
low-slope roofs around here, making roofs easily walk-able. I challenge the
assertion that it's ineffective and unreliable. Practical? Judgment call. How
effective is a disconnect at de-energizing the conductors between the array and
the disconnect itself?

There are many module and inverter manufactures that prescribe opaque covers
while conducting wiring operations in their manuals. Here are some other
resources that point to this same method for "shutting down a PV system"
including:
