Re: [RE-wrenches] Equipment ideas for very large residential PV and battery backup

2019-01-11 Thread Darryl Thayer
just a thought, when trying to parallel 4 XW inverters several years ago,
the problem arose with paralleling the internal relays, going from grid to
back up power and back, burning the contacts. If you truly want 60 kW or
close you need 9 or 10 XWs in parallel. Outback uses the same relay. Is
your project 3 phase?

On the batteries, the max anyone talks about on discharge of Li-ion is 2
hr. suggesting a120 kWh battery for a 60 kW inverter.

 Hi Wrenches,

We have a new potential client who wants a 60 kW PV system and a
battery backup system with 200 kWh of storage. The system will be grid tied
and the client insists on some sort of lithium battery technology and
doesn't want Tesla. For such a ridiculously large system, what kind of
equipment would you recommend? I'm thinking maybe Sunny Islands with Blue
 Ion LiFePO4 batteries?

Yes is the answer on Schneider. When do you need to order? I can get you a
sales engineer as I am working with a few right now. Here is a link to the
XW Pro that will meet future needs as well as California Rule 21.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Equipment ideas for very large residential PV and battery backup

2019-01-11 Thread August Goers
Hi Jay - The battery kW rating isn't necessarily set. Assuming a 60 kW-DC
PV system, we might have about ~50 kW (or a bit more) of PV inverter rating
so I'd by default match the battery inverter rating to that (about 50 kW)
if it was AC coupled. If, for example, we go with four SMA 6048-US Sunny
Islands as our constraint then we might need to split up some of the PV to
be solely grid tied. Long story short, I'm not sure yet.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Equipment ideas for very large residential PV and battery backup

2019-01-11 Thread August Goers
Thanks All for the ideas. For the battery inverters, I'm most interested in
sticking with SMA or Schneider which I've had good experience with in the
past. Over the past year and a half our experience has been focused on the
Tesla Powerwall with SGIP incentivized
projects. Tesla is now allowing up to ten Powerwalls per Gateway which is
about 135 kWh of storage - more than enough for most folks! But this
particular client doesn't want Tesla and insists on wanting more the 200
kWh of storage. As many of your know, SGIP is not for backup purposes but
rather for advanced grid support functionality. I'm curious whether we can
program with Schneider XW to meet SGIP requirements and I've been under the
impression that we can't with the SMA Sunny Island. Regardless, it might be
easiest to just program the inverters for backup only operation and just
skip the SGIP all together.

Best, August

Couldn't agree with you more. When I got involved back in November 18' I
did just that and spoke to the North American team while they were at the
home factory over in Europe. They stated that they hoped to have full UL
approval sometime in 2019. I could feel my eyes rolling in my head as I
thought back on SMA's claim to provide us with a Sunny Island 240vac 60 hz
unit. The joke is on us as when is the last time any of the manufactures
actually listened to us out in the trenches. LOL! Good to know Alan has
landed on his feet as I'll miss him from the M team.

Hi Jay,

The large 3 phase SMA off-grid that we did actually used Midnite charge
controllers and the MN-SMA comm adapter. It has worked well for us.

I believe that you can use the SB X.X line in off grid applications.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Equipment ideas for very large residential PV and battery backup

2019-01-09 Thread Jason Szumlanski
I recently came across Racepoint Energy out of Massachusetts. They have an
integrated solution in a steel container with 100kWh storage and add-on
storage enclosures. I believe it comes as a UL Listed unit with easy
connections for PV, AC in, and AC out. I have seen it in person while
investigating solutions for a client with similar desires, but my knowledge
of the product and company are limited. I believe the one I saw was 40kW PV
with 100kWh storage. I see value in pairing the battery with a suitable
inverter/charger in an integrated unit from the factory. Everything should
play together nicely.

Racepoint is part of Savant, a company focused on high-end home controls.

It might not be as ridiculous as you think. There is growing demand for
large battery solutions. While generators remain the most practical
solution in most backup cases I encounter, there is no question that
consumer demand for batteries is high... until they see the price and
understand the limitations, that is.

Hi August - in addition to the suggestions below, I would give Iron Edison
a call here in Colorado. They have supplied many gorgeous 200-300 kWh LiFe
systems, and they generally use Schneider products.

You should also take a look at the latest Schneider offering. It is made
for the new grid requirements and has the 600v mppt's along with the
Insight monitoring/remote configuration. Also warranty/product support can
be allowed in to help you if you let them. 75KW and going up I hear.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Equipment ideas for very large residential PV and battery backup

2019-01-08 Thread Mac Lewis
Hi August,

The limitation with the Sunny Island, (if you don't go 3 phase), is a quad
stack of 6048s in a 120/240 system last I checked. I think you can double
that with your islanded Sunny Boys. The 6048 had a ridiculously high surge
rating so it can cover pretty high loads.

If you go 3 phase with the multicluster box its above 100 kW.

We have done a 64 kWh Blue Ion and it seems to work extremely well. The
Sunny Island SOC algorithm and Blue Ion SOC don't track perfectly but both
are useful.

I think you can stack 10 x 8048 Radians but AC coupling then becomes a
problem.

Good luck with this.

Hi all, i would keep LG in the mix, and also Pika using Panasonic. My
experiance is only small systems 10 kwh and smaller. Besure to look at
demand charge reduction operation.
