Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress Avalon

2024-05-15 Thread Kirk Herander via RE-wrenches
Does the Avalon system have the ability to monitor an AC 400 amp service?
I know the Envy does not. I ran into this in one of my installs, the envy
does not support paralleling CTs to monitor paralleled main feeds.
And besides, you can’t, at least several months ago even monitor a single
feed 400 amp service using their CTs.

I would have much more confidence in Fortress generally speaking if they
would finally come out with some of these upgrades they’ve been promising
for a while.

2024-05-15 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar via RE-wrenches

Hey Darryl,

I got involved with the Schneider Home all in one (same thing as
Fortress Avalon) Before that I was involved with another Schneider HV
all in one long before Solark. Omnia failed to get to market. I get the
hee bee jeebies with that kind of voltage offgrid. The numerous various
failures of the LG hi voltage batteries.

There is no way to replace the battery without waiting for Fortress to
help. With 48v, I can go to Costco or Walmart and build a temporary 48v
bank in 3 hours. Pretty simple requirement that I have. Especially in
this world!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress Avalon

2024-05-15 Thread Jay via RE-wrenches
It’s an interesting design. I went to a seminar on it. Wiring the main power distribution center, is a bit tricky with how they designed or not wire room. Probably want to use cobra wire.  The battery voltage design is unusual in that more batteries increases the voltage, not bad just different. Web management looks good I presume you’re installing 5 of the 11kw units for 50kw or did you mean 50 kWh with 1 inverter? As to the high battery volts, I’m old enough to remember the push back against 48v. Or when GT solar was 48, and when SMA came out at 600v, it was way too high. Makes a lot of sense to go higher battery volts because with lithium it’s possible vs with lead it isn’t really. Hopefully there becomes a new common high voltage the OEM’s agree on.  New times. JayOn May 14, 2024, at 7:33 PM, Darryl Thayer via RE-wrenches wrote:I am looking at going high voltage as opposed to 48 volts. I say this being firmly stuck in 48VDC off-grid systems.

level of near 100% where the problem exhibits. As soon as the weather gets
sunnier and the days get longer I will see what happens and report back.

Yes, the site I mentioned is only for the fortress envy inverter.

I’ve had the same weather as you, being in northern Vermont, that is where
that system crashed that I mentioned in the previous email, definitely did
not reach a full state of charge in January.

The national weather service reported it was the cloudiest January since
1951.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress

2024-02-15 Thread Dave Tedeyan via RE-wrenches
Kirk,

That site looks specifically for the Envy inverters. Do you know if the
Guardian site is working? My credentials will not get me in at this time.
www.app.fortresspower.io

My sites have no comms between the batteries and the inverter, since it is
an Outback system.

And yes, there is certainly an issue with SOC drift over time without
getting a full charge. I was told by Fortress tech support that the eFlex
batteries needed to get over 55V to calibrate the SOC. Yet, in their
settings, the generator is only supposed to bring them to 54.4V. The solar
will bring it higher. But this was a problem here in upstate NY, where we
did not have a sunny enough day in the entire month of January.

Cheers,
Dave

The battery below was suppose to be networkable but it looks like not
much progress.

A question, it looks like Outback is not closed loop with any battery

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress

2024-02-15 Thread Dave Tedeyan via RE-wrenches
I also have been having some issues with reported SOC through the Guardian
with Fortress. Fortress is generally responsive, although no one has
specifically addressed my concern yet. What I have seen with two recent
eFlex installations (replacing an existing battery bank on an off-grid
system) is that the reported SOC in the Guardian app for some batteries is
way lower than it should be. For example, one system is at 92%, 92%, 92%,
62%. Yet the lights on the batteries all indicate that they are in the
75-100% range. The other system is reporting 23%, 63%, 62%, 25%, 48%, and
again, all the LED's on the batteries are in sync. This has led one
customer to keep disconnecting the batteries and trying to charge just one
of them up and then fiddling with it until they are all back within a good
voltage range, when I am nearly certain that they are all the same voltage
even though they are reporting different SOC on the Guardian app only.

I am looking forward to when they have the website up and I can look at
historical data to see whether this battery is actually doing more work. I
suspect it is not, but then maybe I can get Fortress to look more closely
at it. And for all these batteries, the cables are exactly the same length
and going to a bus bar.

Has anyone else noticed this discrepancy between the guardian app and (what
I think is) reality with the SOC?

Cheers,
Dave

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress

2024-02-14 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar via RE-wrenches

Hi Peter,

I was called in to consult on a new existing 4x Fortress E flex /
Schneider XWP system that worked fine open loop but never communicated
with the Schneider gateway. Fortress to their credit sent a tech out and
he did Fortress FW and a PC exchange. Still not working.

The owner was upset and replaced with Discover AES 42-48-6650. There was
zero configuration to do which surprised the installer. Worked fine
closed loop from the start.

I do not like to be negative about companies in North America and I
still think Fortress could have fixed this with more time.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress

2024-02-14 Thread Eric Smiley via RE-wrenches
The BMS in the eVault Classic has been a headache.
Fortunately, we were able to convince Fortress to let us proactively
replace the BMS in some of our systems - especially the remote off-grid
systems. We are still having problems with weird SOC readings on many of
the batteries. Apparently the SOC reading can get stuck at 100% and
Fortress is aware of the bug. It is frustrating because the owners rely on
the SOC reading rather than voltage.
This experience did convince me that Li-Ion in off-grid applications is not
a reliable solution unless there are multiple independent batteries with
their own BMS. The battery itself may be robust (how long have these
actually been in the field in real-world applications) but the BMS is a
complicated piece of electronics on which the entire system is dependent.
Li-Ion violates the KISS principle. So we talk our off-grid clients out of
using Li-Ion.
IMHO relying on firmware and circuit boards to keep your system running and
protect it from catastrophic failure is not sustainable.

The Guardian app does not provide any historical data. Fortress says they
are working on that. They claim that on request they can provide
historical data but the one time I asked there was an hours-long gap in the
data at the exact time I needed. Maybe Rose Mary Woods’ incarnation is
working for them.

Yep, I found this out when I installed my first Fortress Evault / Envy
inverter combo last month.

What was also a bit different at first is the fact there are -2- different
apps: the Guardian gateway app and the Envy inverter app. I bought the
guardian thinking it was the only way to see the system remotely, but this
is not true IF you've installed the Envy inverter also. The limitation of
no "fleet" monitoring is puzzling.

But now I'm glad there's a unique app for the inverter. The inverter app is
much more detailed and allows most parameters to be tweaked remotely. The
Guardian app id for basic system monitoring only.

So the single-user per app has worked out OK. My customer uses the
at-a-glance Guardian app, and I use the Envy app for more detailed
monitoring and programming.

As of right now, the Guardian app is designed to be used by the end user
only and does not have "fleet management" capabilities as you have
described. This is a highly demanded feature so we are working on getting
this added by Q2 2024.

Interesting on the "mesh" wifi. That is good to know.
And yes, the site I linked is for the Guardian data. I don't know if there
is a separate site for the Envy data, but I'll find out in a couple weeks
when I install my first Envy inverter system. For what it's worth, their
tech support has been easy to get a hold of.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress remote monitoring

2023-11-30 Thread Kirk Herander via RE-wrenches
Yeah, I tried that site the other day, my browser gave me warning messages,
so I left it alone. So that site will be online access to the Guardian
gateway data? I wonder if thats true for the Envy app also.

PS I found out the Guardian gateway will not recognise a newer "mesh" wifi
signal. Fortress is working on a fix, but the physical LAN connection does
work.

I know that with the Guardian Battery monitor the app is working, but they
are doing a major overhaul on the website. My login info does not work on
the website right now, and I am told that it will not be available until
the new year. The website is:

I installed an Evault 18.5 with Envy 8kw inverter the other day. I'm
wondering if there is any way to actually monitor / download system data
from a desktop computer? Can't find anything in the Fortress docs (some of

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress LFPs & ENVY 12kw inverte

2023-06-01 Thread Jeremy Coxon via RE-wrenches
Kirk,
I was going to make the jump to Fortress Envy after the recent NABCEP
conference. Seemed like a good way to go, i.e. one company to deal with and
about same features as SA. When I went to purchase from well known (unnamed)
dist, I was warned away due to unresolved issues with AC coupling. I couldn’t
get more info or details - just got pointed to other solutions. I’m waiting
and watching to see how they do before I make the jump. I’m not in the
business of being front line support for these guys. I will say they were very
good at responding to my design questions, but when I brought this little AC
coupling issue up - crickets. I also don’t like their “ticket” system for tech
support. Frustrating!

Personally I would go with solark that's what they do, make inverters not
other stuff just like I would use Fortress for the battery because that's
what they do, is it similar sure but why? If it's the same then go with a
known product and track record, we are seeing this mre and more and that
does not always turn out that well.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress LFPs & ENVY 12kw inverter

2023-06-01 Thread Howie Michaelson via RE-wrenches
Kirk,
I have not tried the new Envy inverter, and at the moment am slightly
reluctant to do so, mostly because I have gone all in on Sol-Ark/eVault Max
setups for battery based systems and I hate having more and more different
products to stay on top of. That being said, I attended an Envy webinar,
and on first pass, programming and interface seemed pretty well thought out
with the Envy (although in general, I've been pretty happy with the
Sol-Ark, but from a distance the Envy looked like an improvement). The
advantage with an Envy is the single company so interface issues won't
devolve into a guessing game between 2 companies. None-the-less, for the
time being, I'm staying with the Sol-Ark...

[RE-wrenches] Fortress LFPs & ENVY 12kw inverter

2023-06-01 Thread Kirk Herander via RE-wrenches
Hello All,

I am sizing my first Fortress system, 18.5kwh LFPs w/ their new ENVY
inverter. Or would a Sol-Ark be a better fit? I understand both inverters
are somewhat similar.

Any opinions from the real-world of installs would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

[RE-wrenches] Fortress Envy - AC coupled

2023-04-18 Thread Jeremy Coxon via RE-wrenches
Wondering if anyone has used the new 12kW Fortress Envy inverter in an AC
coupled system yet and what sort of results you might have seen? I’ve heard
that this inverter is made by the same manufacturer as SolArk. Don’t know if
that’s true or not, but find it interesting.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress Battery Heater

2023-02-09 Thread Kienan Maxfield via RE-wrenches
I've wanted to find a thermostat that could handle DC Voltage for a while now,
but I haven't done the research. What I've wanted to do is to tap right off the
PV input, through a thermostat, into a simple resistive heater. That way, it
won't drain the battery to warm the array. If the resistive heater is designed
for 120V AC, then it should work pretty well with 3 60 cell modules in series.
I'd want to actually do the math with the Voc and Vmp and temperatures before
suggesting an actual design, but shooting from the hip, If you have 5 or 6
modules in series, then just wire 2 heating pads in series. If you have 10 to
12 modules in series, just put 3 heating pads in series. You get the gist. I
think the only difficult part to really figure out is the thermostat. I don't
know if anyone makes a thermostat that would work with the DC voltage.
Otherwise, you'd need a DC relay or contactor, but then you'd need a source for
the control voltage...

Anyways, just some food for thought. If anyone has ideas about a high voltage
DC thermostat, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks,
Kienan

I'd suggest reaching out to the Fortress techie's as they just introduced a

the E Vault?

Here are ideas that I have not tried, but am considering:
1) add a 240 v, 1000 w baseboard heater in the room near the battery
that is wired to only run off the generator. Run the generator until
the heat comes up, and then hopefully after 30 minutes, the battery
would begin accepting a charge.

2) Add an 120 vac heating blanket under the evault that would be wired
to a thermostat, but also have a relay control from the PV system, so
that the heater would only operate when the sun was out, and the battery
was below 50F. I don't quite know how to set this up with the Solark's
load controls.

I've considered some DC options, but they don't make much sense, since
the inverter has to be on to charge from PV anyway.

The long term plan is for the client to finish the insulation, and sheet
rock, and add a gas wall heater in there as needed.

2) Add an 120 vac heating blanket under the evault that would be wired

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress Battery Problems

2023-01-12 Thread Kienan Maxfield via RE-wrenches
Ray,

I'm curious if your Fortress system is doing better now. Fortress used to do
their support using a platform that was open to the public. It allowed anyone
who wanted to see what they had suggested to other people. I've seen them
recommend a one-time charge of up to 56V to get everything in sync. When
charging above the normal charge voltage, it's advisable to use a low current.

As far as the master/slave configureation... the batteries don't control how
much they discharge/recharge. They shut themselves off for certain protective
reasons, and they balance themselves when they're above a certain voltage, but
other than that, they don't have any control. The master/slave is for
communication and safety purposes only.

Thanks,
Kienan

I finally heard back from Fortress, I'm going to try their suggestion of
"equalizing" the batteries at 55.5 v, and adjust some settings. I'll report
back to the list on what I come up with. This is an interesting application:
quad stack of VFX inverters with Midnite CCs. Using the aux out on the
Classic to control a relay to turn on/off the inverters for LVD, since Outback
programming (like Schneider) won't allow LVD settings above 48v.

better solution than others I've seen. However, we are having issues.
First the two batteries are supposed to be linked together in a master/
slave configuration, but they charge and discharge unevenly, and have
SOC often 20% different. Batteries are connected to a common buss with
equal length 4/0 cables.

I've been truly disappointed with Fortress customer support. First, I've
called multiple times over the past two weeks, and never got through to
anyone. Their online support system is quite flawed as well, and I had
a very difficult time even setting up a support ticket. Now I can't
even log in to view the support ticket, and I've only received one email
back asking if I had properly paralleled the batteries.

Has anyone else had a hard time with Fortress support? Does anyone have
a direct contact? Customer is beyond pissed now, after almost 2 weeks
hearing nothing, and having spent tens of thousands.

Hey all, I really like Fortress and I’ve had amazingly good experiences with
their support. I have had 3 different interactions with Fortress technical
support. They’ve supported me very very well. They don’t have a good phone
number for me to call, but I fill out an online ticket and then the appropriate
support agent calls me. Sure, occasionally I’m in a place with no internet, but
then, there’s probably no cell phone coverage either.

Overall, their technical support was the most helpful team I’ve ever
experienced. Outback Power has some really awesome techs (like Lones Tuss) but
when you have to deal with the low level techs (which is most of the time),
it’s pretty bad. I haven’t had good experiences with Schneider tech support or
MidNite tech support. I’ve dealt with many other companies, and I felt like
Fortress had the best tech support I’ve had to deal with.

[RE-wrenches] Fortress support call

2022-12-01 Thread Howie Michaelson via RE-wrenches
Jeremy,

I would love to have an opportunity to talk with Fortress about their
support process. I am just in the tail end of installing 2 Sol-Ark/Fortress
off grid systems (one 15k with 2 eVaults and two 15ks with 5 eVaults). I've
been very impressed with both pieces of equipment so far. However, I sent
an email to Fortress expressing my distinct disappointment with the support
I was getting. Particularly after they basically blew off my problems as
being inverter issues, since they couldn't see how anything on their end
could be causing the problems we were experiencing.

I continued to make noise about my problems. Finally, it turned out there
was some incompatibly between a firmware update Sol-Ark did recently and
the eVault's communication protocol. After that was determined, I have
been impressed with the support response I have been given by Fortress,
consistently getting relatively quick return calls and follow up calls.
They have dedicated lots of resources toward getting a new firmware rolled
out in a very timely fashion and so far it has proven to be stable and
functional. I will have more to say about this once we install the Fortress
update on the larger system, as we are waiting to make sure it continues to
work on the smaller system (we have only had this "beta" firmware on the
system for 2 days now).

I wish there were more online resources for programming and troubleshooting
smaller issues. The wait time between contacting Fortress's support system
and getting a live response is still problematic, especially for off grid
systems, especially in more remote locations, since waiting for hours on
site for a response to even simple issues is not sustainable. My sense is
Fortress is working to improve the situation, but I'm the mean time...

To be fair, I've found this to be pretty much common place with most
manufacturers' support systems these days. I need to remember to build in
more time on my installs, particularly when dealing with new (and/or new to
me) equipment, as my learning curve speed is greatly improved when I can
talk to a live, knowledgeable tech.

I finally heard back from Fortress, I'm going to try their suggestion of
"equalizing" the batteries at 55.5 v, and adjust some settings.  I'll
report back to the list on what I come up with.  This is an interesting
application: quad stack of VFX inverters with Midnite CCs.   Using the
aux out on the Classic to control a relay to turn on/off the inverters
for LVD, since Outback programming (like Schneider) won't allow LVD
settings above 48v.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fortress Battery Problems

2022-11-16 Thread Howie Michaelson via RE-wrenches
Hi Ray,
I have been having a difficult time communicating with Fortress as well. I
filed a support ticket several times and only got a response a couple of
days later asking another question that was easily answered, but then do
not receive any reply to that without filing another support ticket, which
again takes days for them to respond to. Very unsatisfactory and
frustrating after having invested in 7 eVault Max for a long time client.
Don't have any suggestions for you.

[RE-wrenches] Fortress Battery Problems

2022-11-16 Thread Ray Walters via RE-wrenches

Greetings Fellow Wrenches;

Based on glowing reports from the RE list, I finally used Fortress for a
battery replacement for a long time customer. Overall, it seems to be a
better solution than others I've seen.

Thanks;

Re: [RE-wrenches] fortress power question

2021-02-01 Thread Eric Smiley
My experience and advice from Tech Support at Fortress was NOT to network
the eVault 18.5 with only 2 batteries. We just installed two eVault18.5
with one Sol-Ark12K. The communication doesn't work properly with only two
batteries. The tech advised to run both batteries independently as Masters,
which was the only way we could make it work. All attempts at networking
them failed. We didn't try to network the batteries to the inverter.
Of course, Murphy's Law dictated that this was a remote system with no
internet or cell reception. So, I had to make a second trip out to make it
work after I found this out from Tech Support the next morning.
Apparently you can network one battery with the Sol-Ark in closed loop but
the tech I talked to said how this is done (special com cable) varies with
the version of the Sol-Ark one is using since Sol-Ark has been making
changes to their circuit board.

 Jay,

I worked with them on the XW to close the loop. They did get it working
with Eflex and it is easy to commission. However, they were not able to
 get
the conext insight data out to the cloud totally implemented. Until they
prove that to me, I will stay with Discover AES. The site at the bottom
showing state of charge is an AES battery BTW.

I think this was mentioned by others, but Fortress confirmed to me today
that closed loop only works with one or two evault batteries with Sol-Ark.
More than that and communications breaks down. They're working on a fix,
but they told me that there are no guarantees. They could not give me a
date. It sounded like it was a hardware fix and existing batteries would
not be upgradable.

Hi Jay,

Yes, when installed in a closed loop configuration, the Sol Ark uses the
SOC% provided by the BMS...which can be used to control the AGS.

Re: [RE-wrenches] fortress power question

2021-02-01 Thread Chris Sparadeo
Jay,

I have installed the eFlex paired with Sol Ark and it was very straight
forward. You need to make a modified RJ45 cable, but other than that, it’s
pretty much plug and play. I believe that Fortress is still working on
their WiFi monitoring for the eFlex...They say the eVault will be closed
loop by Q2.

Jay,

I worked with them on the XW to close the loop. They did get it working
with Eflex and it is easy to commission. However, they were not able to get
the conext insight data out to the cloud totally implemented. Until they
prove that to me, I will stay with Discover AES. The site at the bottom
showing state of charge is an AES battery BTW.

[RE-wrenches] Fortress LFP batteries

2019-07-31 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar

Anyone have any comments on Fortress LFP batteries please?

I already
know that they do not integrate directly with Outback and Schneider. One
must use a battery monitor.

I believe that the Fortress battery does not
have a display for Soc, could be wrong.

Thank-you!
