  Hi Jay,

I'm with Daryl on this, except I'd say RUN AWAY, right now, no matter what.
When a potential client in a problematic location starts dictating oddball
terms right off the bat, that's more than just a problem with the contract.
It's a telltale that something is wrong with the whole situation. It speaks to
the attitude and motivation of the client. If they are that picky about the
pricing they will pick you apart on everything you do. Most people are fine,
but some clients are just born dissatisfied. Even if they suddenly agreed to
all your terms I still wouldn't take the job.

  Best of luck,

  Hilton

Not to mention that the Baja and the mainland are very different also. I
lived down there and did business for 10 years and so all of my knowledge
gained is probably very outdated 18 years later. It probably was old news

wow, such great information I’ve gotten from you all.

It all seems pretty clear that this cost + is quite unusual, and I take to
heart what you have said.
As an aside, pretty unusual to have almost unanimous opinions here on the
wrenches, no?

FYI, I”ve done many systems in Baja and I get paid 100% in advance before
anything ships. To either the end user here in the states or to a freight
forwarder. Yes once it reaches them, I no longer have control. And the client
is responsible for any damage enroute in MX. Yea lots of weird stuff happens
down there!

OK now I’ve got to contact their money guy.

Thanks again all,

Re: [RE-wrenches] has anyone ever had this happen?

2018-01-23 Thread Peter Parrish
Ho Jay,

I’d be extremely careful.

First with your pricing, don’t forgive some of your legitimate costs. Add
Shipping & Handling and taxes to all equipment purchases. Carefully estimate
your labor costs, travel to Mexico, shipping across the border to Mexico. Are
there any import costs? What will be other “costs of doing business”?

Second, you know what it costs to run your business. Add the appropriate
overhead and general and administrative costs. Office staff and your salary;
insurance; and other indirect costs. You might tell them what your indirect
cost schedule is (e.g. 15% on PV panels, inverters, batteries and any other
hardware; 10% on wages and other fees), and if they don’t agree, decline to do
business with them.

Third, I’d set up a progress payment schedule. Arrange for payment in in $US
bank draft (be careful of bogus bank drafts) or other form of payment you are
confortable with.

Fourth, does your existing insurance policies cover equipment and auto theft
(in Mexico)? Get a rider if it doesn’t.

Fifth, don’t provide them with any design information prior to signing a
contract.

HI All,

I’ve had a large company want to do a project and they want me to invoice it as
follows. They said it had to do with knowing the cost of the system, but that
doesn’t seem right to me. Now I don’t want to get screwed here, and it sure
seems that could happen.

I’m pretty sure I know what you all will say, but I feel like I needed to get a
bit of a reality check.
As I mostly do projects on a handshake, dealing with large companies isn’t too
common for me.

1. give them wholesale pricing ( line item by item)
2. add margin, but small one is all they’ll accept

Project is an off grid, no permits, in Mexico, remote site and pretty big:
16kw inverter, 9kw PV, etc.

Thank you but no thank you might be the best answer. Mexico can be a
tough place to do business and potentially dangerous depending on where the

Re: [RE-wrenches] has anyone ever had this happen?

2018-01-23 Thread Darryl Thayer
I had it happen two ways, one asked for more and more details which i gave
then they shopped my design out to another installer. The other time when
the job was done they refused to pay mark up and said my labor was to high
and said take it or leave it.

Re: [RE-wrenches] has anyone ever had this happen?

2018-01-23 Thread Chris Mason
I've done this once because the client had duty free concessions, he had to
have the manufacturer's invoices. I quoted him Cost plus 20 for the
materials plus a labour fee and a management fee.
He took the quote and I never heard from him again, guess he tried to buy
the goods at the same cost.
One way around this is to explain that you have confidential pricing and
giving that to them would break that agreement.
On the other hand, I work with a large company that handled the shipping
and brokerage, so they had to get my supplier invoices. But, and this may
work for you, I first signed a Per-Watt contract with them, so what they
seen afterwards didn't make any difference.
You can always edit the invoices to make them higher.

We dont ask that and if we did we would get an ear full. However in the
past with government projects they ask, l have heard different reasons why.
But it in Mexico so anything could be required

Re: [RE-wrenches] has anyone ever had this happen?

2018-01-23 Thread Starlight Solar Power Systems
jay,

My view: My cost is no ones business but mine. You either pay what I charge for
materials and labor or go elsewhere. FYI, with that position I still have a
continual 1-2 month waiting list of people waiting to pay for our services.

Being on the Mexico border, I’ve had a few developers contact me for large PV
solar power systems for RV parks and small communities in Mexico. They want
quotes and lots of info; lots of my time. A few years ago I decided to charge a
large refundable consulting fee to discuss any details for systems like that.
No takers. And, these projects never get done either as they were just
fantasies to begin with.

We do international shipping fairly often and always require prepayment.

It can be difficult to do international wire transfers so we offer PayPal as an
option and add on the "convenience fee".

Don't ship without payment you have no way to get it back once it's gone.

Sounds like a shaft but no mine involved !

Can you get your money and have it clear before it ships ?

I understand that doesn’t even work with credit cards and a bogus cashiers

[RE-wrenches] has anyone ever had this happen?

2018-01-23 Thread jay

Thanks
