Re: [RE-wrenches] Looking for insulated #6 bare standoff

2018-04-21 Thread Jason Szumlanski
I discovered last year that there is a process for formal and informal
interpretations from Florida's Building Officials Association (BOAF) and
BOs are obligated and strongly encouraged, respectively, to follow their
opinions. The process takes a little time but has proven to be very
effective. If your state has one, I would encourage you to get familiar
with the process.

We recently had a ruling in our favor in less than 30 days for use of Romex
in the attic for AC microinverter circuits and also to omit labeling on
these circuits. Essentially it asked if 690.31(E) (2011) applied to
inverter output circuits. An "overzealous" plans review and inspector was
causing us headaches. The BO, who happened to be on the association board
but for a different discipline, gladly accepted the informal interpretation
in our favor before it was even published and directed his reviewers and
inspectors to approve our request!

I've dealt with tough inspectors in many jurisdictions.  I seem to spend
50% of my time doing education.  I do not just take the AHJs word as
gospel and blindly follow.  I meet with them, sit down with the code and
we work it out.  I am not afraid to question or protest a decision.
After a few years, the inspectors know I'm not trying to get away with
sub standard work, and that we all want the installation to be done right.

It's probably nervous inspectors who feel their neck is on the line,
and are interpreting defensively thinking that is the safest thing for
them to do. We have taught a lot of Code officials and they really
feel exposed when it comes to PV.

The key to me is just taking time, if the Building Official has it, to
go over the NEC sections and their relevance. It has to be made
understandable and easy. These people are suppose to approve
everything from house wiring to appliances to pools, to anything that
requires a permit. It is just too much for almost everyone to

6AWG is the size that meets several tests for exposed installations.
By that I mean that it is not protected. If you are running the array
EGC exposed, you would use at least 6AWG depending upon the size of
the overcurrent protection device towards the charge controller/array
disconnect. 250.120(C) and T250.122.

We have run into the conductor covering rating problem too. #4 can be
color coded so you can use black conductor. A reasonable inspector
should allow this for 6 since a lot of the non black coverings are
not holding up as well to sunlight as black.  I think NEC2017 takes
this into consideration and allows you to color code because of the
superior performance of black coverings.

I have never seen any bare ground wire with a UL stamp on it. The
braided strap we use is rated as 4 AWG.  Its also tinned, so its more
corrosion resistant.  Further, I think everyone (including your
inspector) needs to read 690.31(E); you'll see more flexible cables are
required on trackers.  PV wire is acceptable.

On tracking arrays, I have had both solid and stranded copper ground wire
strain harden and break. The cyclical motion will slowly work away at coarse
cables. I've even seen solid #6 break off on just a tilt adjustable array. I
now use a braided ground strap at least for the rack to pole ground connection.
This is the same strap that is used to ground generators and other moving
electrical equipment.

https://www.delcity.net/store/Ground-Straps/p_818655.h_818654

I isolate it at the connection to the aluminum with a sandwich of Stainless fender
washers and a 1/4" bolt with toothed lock washer to bite into the AL, or it also
works well folded in ground Lugs and buss bars. You can open up the weave of the braided
copper in the middle to get the 1/4" bolt through. I've checked these years later:
no corrosion, wire not broken off at the connector.

The bare #8 is an EGC for #10 USE PV wire on the tracker to the array

Would #8 meet code? I thought that exposed ground wire had to be #6

I isolate it at the connection to the aluminum with a sandwich of Stainless
fender washers and a 1/4" bolt with toothed lock washer to bite into the AL, or
it also works well folded in ground Lugs and buss bars. You can open up the
weave of the braided copper in the middle to get the 1/4" bolt through. I've
checked these years later: no corrosion, wire not broken off at the connector.

Platt was the one who said I needed to order 10,000 LFT.

I have ordered & now received the insulated standoffs from Fastenal and will be
running the #8 bare copper.

As always thanks everyone for your input time & efforts.

Dana,

There are probably some others, but you can buy #6 copper use-2 green online by
the foot ($0.64) from
https://www.wireandcableyourway.com/6-awg-xlp-use-2-rhh-rhw-2-building-wire.html

Re: [RE-wrenches] Looking for insulated #6 bare standoff

2018-04-19 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar
A question on this thread for you folks. Have you seen or heard of anyone
building a single axis or dual tracker like the old Array Tek AZ 125 ? I
really miss that tracker as it was on a 6 " pipe that I could install by
myself. The 8" is just too hard for me to do at this ripe age.

I could get 2KW on that 6 inch pole and very quickly give a huge positive
impact on an offgrid home. Anything out there?

How about an insulated loop clamp like this one:

You can get them in stainless and they have the rubber grommet so it
 won't
 touch the rack.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Looking for insulated #6 bare standoff

2018-04-19 Thread Mike Kocsmiersky
My quick thoughts would be using a sunlight resistant insulated wire, and
stripping the insulation where needed to make the grounding connection. Second
would be to use a tinned copper wire, where I believe eliminates the galvanic
corrosion / dissimilar metals issue, but perhaps not depending on the metals.
I've always used for metal roof applications.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Looking for insulated #6 bare standoff

2018-04-18 Thread Ray
That was my question as well.  USE -2 with green insulation is
available.  Sorry to hear about AHJ's in Idaho being stuck over a decade
back.  I thought that array grounding was UL listed and better spelled
out now in NEC 2017.  What code cycle are you all on?

How about an insulated loop clamp like this one:
https://www.fastenal.com/products/details/0216763

You can get them in stainless and they have the rubber grommet so it won't
touch the rack.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Looking for insulated #6 bare standoff

2018-04-18 Thread whitley forman
You should not have to run a EGC/GEC along the with Array Technologies. When I
have installed these in the past we always mechanically bond within the
bicinity of the conduit or box we are running our wiring through. No need to
non-mechanically attach anywhere.
