Re: [Refresh Austin: 5557] Trail of Lights

2010-10-15 Thread Infinity Mark
We could create a website no problem. I was just thinking that Austin tech
companies are as much a part of this community as the Trail of Lights, and
Refresh Austin is an obvious choice for appealing to this group as a whole.
The drive would stand a much greater chance for success with an organization
like this behind it.

Three quarters of a million dollars is a lot of money to collect in such an
ad hoc manner. I think you're probably talking about starting a non-profit
with that kind of budget as these are donations and there are reams of
laws and tax codes governing these. Also, I'm not sure the CoA is looking to
crowdsource the funds for Trail of Lights so you would probably need to get
their buy-in unless you're aiming to force them to reconsider canceling it
ala the Cactus Cafe uprising.

I thought they actually talked about allowing it to continue if there were
contributions to cover the cost. I'll check on that. Obviously any formal
effort in this cause would need to be worked closely with the Austin City
Council or City Manager at least.

Re: [Refresh Austin: 5561] Trail of Lights

2010-10-15 Thread Adrian Nye

This whole discussion should go off-list, but I don't believe it is just money
that has curtailed the Trail of Lights. If support for it was so overwhelming,
it would have been continued despite the cost, since it's cost is a drop in the
bucket in this city's multi-billion $ budget. The city has just approved over
$1 Billion, with a B, for a water plant we don't even need, and they can't find
750K? Doesn't add up.

One issue is the large amount of energy it consumes.
