 Hi
I'm thinking about putting 1 or 2 bandpass filters

is: MSR 2000, VHF 2 meter, about 50 watts out of
the duplexer, 1/2 in hardline, 1/4 in hardline
jumpers, el cheapo antenna (I know, I know), stock
 pre-amp, etc.

It would be better to find the source of the problem.
If it is desense and what's causing it. Some simple
checks could give you an idea of the problem source(s).

 Question is:
 1. Is the jumper length from the pass filter to the
duplexer or PA to the pass filter critical?

Most generic repeater people will say no. But it
does make a difference. I say yes and follow rules
of thumb on certain repeater system cable lengths,
this specific cable being one of them.

 2. If I use more than 1 filter, is the length of the cable
between the added on filters critical?

Yes

 3. Will the interconnect cables within the duplexer need to be
 changed?

Probably not the lenghts.

 4. Will the duplexer need to be re-tuned?

Yes, everything should be checked and probably re-adjusted
slightly.

 5. Would I be better off using notch filters as opposed to pass
 filters?

You don't know what the problem is yet... and you
didn't indicate what type of duplexer you are using.

Number 5 alive says... need input?

Do you have a isolator or circulator in line?

I'm at a somewhat low noise site...closest RF stuff is about 200
yards away with the exception of my micor GMRS UHF repeater (50
watts) that's co-located at the site.

Nice to be at a low noise site. You might not need the additional
filters. You should find and address the desense problem first.

Okay, but I'll not agree that everyone is 'either' one flavour or the
other. I say this as I am (finally) rebuilding my 145.27 machine the
way I want it. The repeater is a Motorola Micor Non Unified Chassis.
The transmitter is built from an old IMTS paging station that originally
fed 10 watts into the tube PA. I sold the Motorola tube PA to make room
for the rest of the goodies. The receiver shelf was added and the
control system stripped as I usually do containing only a modified
Station Control Card. In addition to the exciter, 10 watt PA, receiver,
and control shelf, there also resides a RC-96, DVR, and FC-900 stack.
The original power supply was replaced with TPN1110B so the backup 110
watt PA could be driven under battery power. I say 'backup' PA because
the main PA is a GE 4EF5A1, 330 watt station power amplifier from the
Mastr Pro/II era. The GE tube PA resides in its own (GE) cabinet along
with a front facing exposed metering panel and internal rack mounted
Mastr II style IMTS power meter/alarm.

In this station, GE and Motorola are married to give (IMHO) the best
operation from one of the most powerful 2 meter repeaters on the east
coast.
Both are simply a joy to service.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Does the R100 need duplexer if using two anetnnas?

2004-10-05 Thread Wade Lake

Point taken. 1/4 wave antennas are not truly isotropic. The vertical
seperation can be much less if gain antennas are used however, and gain
antennas give better coverage further out, which is usually a benefiet.

As long as you are using 1 antenna system for TX and another antenna

verticals).
Unity gain, omni-directional antennas (like 1/4 wave verticals) radiate
in
all directions equally and you cannot effectively isolate one from the
  other.

Actually, the 1/4 wave ground plane antenna doesn't radiate in all
directions equally. Instead it has quite a hole in the pattern directly
above the vertical radiator and they work quite when they're stacked one
above the other, vertically, using the top antenna for receive and
mounting
it upside down. Separation should be as much as you can stand but at least
30 feet. They've been used on repeaters for years. I've run several
repeaters without a duplexer using 1/4 wave ground planes myself.

Provided you have 2 antennas with some gain, I would recommend at
least 9dBi, you will need enough tower or mast to vertically seperate
the
antennas by 10 or 15 feet. If you are using yagi type antennas, the
same
  rules apply.

  Good luck

[Repeater-Builder] 2 repeaters / one antenna

2004-10-05 Thread ve3iny

I have two repeaters, one running 144.67/145.27, the other running
448.8/443.8. I use a ham grade diplexer (Daiwa or MFJ or something)
to connect the output(s) of the 2 meter and 440 duplexer(s) to a
single feedline feeding a dual band Cushcraft colinear.

This set-up works great, and the diplexer introduces very little
VSWR
into the system.

Howver I am sure there is a more professional method of combining the
two repeater duplexers to the common feedline.

Any suggestions ?

Not really, there are more expensive crossband couplers though. As long as
you don't take a lightning strike you will be fine. If/when that happens
buy another 60 dollar coupler. I used one of the cheap Comet crossband
couplers fro years until I built my tower, I then came across a tower
company that was going out of business and I bought all his stuff for
pennies on the dollar. Along with that stuff came about 20 Microwave
Associates crossband couplers of varying models. They are built like tanks
inside and do pretty well in lightning strikes. I have had several at 475
feet since late 1998 with no problems.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Direct Digital Frequency Synthesizer

2004-10-05 Thread Wade Lake

I have not encountered any forums specifically for DDS projects. I
wanted to build one for a QRP project I was working on but I also wanted
to try replacing old channel elements with one to make a Rock bound
Motorola or GE, frequency agile for remote base operation. The NJQRP
kit parts are easy to find from Jameco, Digikey, etc. Since the NJQRP
kits arent available any-more I was thinking of designing a new PWB of my
own with a stamp on board, since I'll be needing more of these for all
the projects I have in mind.

Wade - KR7K

Is there a forum group for this project or more specifically I am
interested in a DDS board if there are supplies out there. I see the NJQRP
website discusses another production run, but I would like to find an un
built kit from someone who may have decided it was too much..

Doug
KB8GVQ

 Hi all,

If any of you radio builders out there have built the NJQRP DDS
board or any Analog devices AD9850 based project, you probably
noticed right away, as I did, that there are very few ways of
controlling the AD9850 DDS chip On the fly.

I just wanted to share with the group a piece of software I
wrote for the Basic Stamp2, to load frequencies that are directly
entered to a Basic stamp via a 4x4 keypad ($7.00 from Jameco). Stamp
code to do this might already exist, but I was not succesful in
 finding any.

I realize that there is already code for PIC's out there but many of
you might agree with me that it is easier to customize Stamp code.

My code can be downloaded from http://kr7k.pecnet.net

Hope it helps someone out with their DDS Project - it sure helped
 me...

Re: [Repeater-Builder] 2 repeaters / one antenna

2004-10-05 Thread mch

I would recommend lightning protection (specifically Polyphasor). Since
it should be at the enterance to the building, and the duplexers (the
two on the repeaters and the one combining the repeaters) should all be
inside the building, they would all be protected. That should eliminate
the lightning issue.

The tower is another matter, but in this case the combined feedline is
not diplexed back to two separate antennas, so it's a non-issue.

I have a PDF file at work on the DB-212 which gives information on all the
212 configurations. I will submit it as soon as I can. I do know that
 the
cable coming from each dipole is 50 Ohm and where they join in a Y (now 25
Ohm) is a 1/4 wave stub made from 35 Ohm cable to get back to 50 Ohm
 again.

[Repeater-Builder] Intermod problem?

2004-10-05 Thread Mr John Lloyd

Q,

I had a IM problem several years ago with our 146.940
repeater. The repeater was a GE MastrII station with a
dual isolator on the transmitter and a bandpass
bandreject duplexer. The antenna was a Sinclair SRL229
mounted to a 40 Ft wood pole. The other transmitters
found in the IM mix were AM broadcast transmitters
nearby. One was on 910 khz and the other on 1510 khz.
Thats right, they were 600 khz apart. When the 146.94
transmitter came on the mix was present and heard in
the 146.34 receiver until the repeater timed out. One
clue was that the IM would go away at sundown and
return at sunrise. We found that the station on 1510
went to very low power at night. Both AM transmitters
were within 5 miles of this repeater and were very
strong.

It turned out that the mix was coming from a nearby
tower that had 3 rusty guy anchors. This was a 120 Ft
tower that was 200 Ft away. I solved the problem by
putting in jumper wires attached with cable clamps
from each of the guy wire to ground which bypassed the
rusty guy wire combing plate.

Look for any rusty guy wires, rusty joints between guy
wires, rusty tower joints, loose metal rubbing up
against a tower leg or section, loose hardware on a
tower, antenna elements that have come loose from their
mount. This should get you started.

The site that has the strongest interferrence is most
likely to have the problem nearby. This sounds like
the 146.70 location from your description.

I would make sure that both repeaters have dual
isolators on their transmitters. A dual isolator keeps
the transmitter PA from creating the 2A-B and 2B-A mix
from happening and being radiated back out through
your antenna.

I recently found and purchased a tuneable Sinclair
Dual Isolator and I tuned it down to 145.270 just
fine. Insertion loss was under 1 db and the isolation
was 75 DB on frequency. I got mine from Bill Hance,
KD7CWA. Bill knows his stuff and is good to work with.

Trying to troubleshoot an intermod??? problem between
two repeaters.

The 146.10/.70 repeater's receiver gets blasted by the
147.90/.30 transmitter but only when they are both
transmitting. Yes,the transit freqs are 600khz apart
and they are only 5 miles apart. Would a circulator
help this problem?

Also have similar problem between the 146.07/.67 and
the 147.87/.27 repeaters when they are both keyed up.
Ideas?

[Repeater-Builder] UHF Duplexer Question

2004-10-05 Thread JHCCRadio

I currently have a UHF MTR-2000 repeater, I bought it without a duplexer. It is the 100 watt type. I will be using this repeater at a high site with alot of intermod. I am looking for a good duplexer... I am not sure which one tp purchase. I have no problem buying a new one and spending some money, but I am not sure if that is the best choice.. Sop here are my questions ??
Which brand of duplexer does motorola send as a package with the MTR-2000 if adding the duplexer option ?
Which brand of duplexer seems to work the best in a high intermod site ?
Is a used duplexer as good as a new one if bought in good condition ?

Thanks in advance ??

[Repeater-Builder] Re: filter question

2004-10-05 Thread rtoplus

Hi Steve

I haven't had a chance to remove the pre-amp. Here's the story...

My handy-dandy motorola tech came to the site about 3 months ago
to help. He told me I had about 6db-10db of desense according to
his zillion dollar service monitor. He was wanting to sell me a
used Celwave 5042-1 duplexer he had. He offered it to me for a good
price...$600.00 so I bit and we hooked it up and tuned it. I asked
him about the preamp and he said I should leave it in place. I said
OK and he went on his merry way. A ham buddy of mine and me then
took off in different directions to check out the new system. The
desense was worse than ever Just a few miles from the site, any
attempt to use the repeater caused the repeater transmitter to key
on and off constantly. Next day, I went back to the site, removed
the celwave and put the sinclair back on...problem went away. I got
home and looked up the specs on the celwave and lo and behold, the
sinclair had much better specs. The radio tech blamed everything on
the antenna I have, which I know causes some problems, but like I
said in an earlier post, my options are somewhat limited (any
suggestions in this area would be welcome!).

Needless to say, I've not used this guy again.

Anyway, I haven't removed the preamp. If I do remove it, does the
receiver need to be retuned? That's one reason I've not removed it
cause its a bit tough to get my equipment to the site if retuning is
needed.

Thanks

TX RX in Angola, NY has BP/BR duplexers that seem to be the
most popular for high interference sites, in my opinion. Depending on the level

Turn the Repeater Power Down to 20 watts output. Borrow a 3dB
attenuator that will handle 15 watts and intert it in the line
between the rf pa and the duplexer. Test the system again using
weak signals (run around your normal locations with ht's).

Less the reduced repeater transmit power out, tell me/us if the
desense the same goes away, or is much reduced.

Motorola uses the six cavity celwave rack mount (very expensive). I
would suggest the tx/rx units over the celwave. I use the tx/rx 4
