Re: [Repeater-Builder] Choosing Commercial UHF Repeater

2005-02-21 Thread Eric Lemmon

Perhaps the best answer is to see what the public-safety agencies use at
sites with several dozen UHF repeaters within a few hundred meters. In
my area of Central California, the most common repeaters are Motorola
Quantar and MTR2000, or Kenwood TKR-840. The brand of the repeater used
is driven by the brand of mobile and portable radios being used, since a
Kenwood mobile radio will not mute quietly on a Motorola repeater, and
(except for the Professional Series radios) vice-versa. While many GE,
Vertex, and Icom radios will mute quietly on a Kenwood repeater, that is
not a "given."

While selecting top-quality equipment is important, there is a great
deal of engineering that must go into the design of a repeater at a
dense site. Logical placement of antennas is important; you don't want
to put your antenna right next to an antenna that has a harmonic or
subharmonic relationship to yours.

My personal preference is to use large-diameter cavity bandpass filters
on both RX and TX, double or triple ferrite circulators on TX, and
nothing but double-shielded cable or hardline throughout. The Number
One Rule is that nothing but an on-frequency signal can get into my
receiver, and nothing but an on-frequency signal leaves my transmitter.
In an ideal world, all of the repeaters at a dense site would be
designed to follow this Rule. Alas, such is not the case...

[Repeater-Builder] Explanation & Solution to the GE Mastr II non duplexing frequencies (mobile repeater)

2005-02-21 Thread Kevin Custer

All,

It was a busy day at the Repeater Builder shop. Scott Z and I were
working on a Mastr II mobile conversion for a customer on 224.000 -1.6
megs and couldn't get the thing to duplex as it self quieted as soon as
the transmitter was activated. We both knew about the problem on UHF
that happened around 443.400 give or take, but the 220 thing had us
baffled. We decided to load the whole scenario into Microflop XL and
see if we could see anything that could be producing the problem. Sure
enough, lots of data was produced, studied, and the problem found. We
took this one step further and made a prediction spreadsheet that shows
the "good" and "bad" repeater pairs on both the 220 and 440 ham bands.

If you would like to download the XL files to view to research that
shows why certain frequencies using LSI are a no-no, go here:

BTW, all fields are editable with your own entries to prove to yourself
why things are as they are on (your?) frequencies...
The Good and Bad fields on the UHF *may* be a bit liberal as an
differential frequency of 15 kilohertz was used as the criteria. This
field can also be edited if you think 15 Kc is too liberal in the judgment.

Moving on, the data also shows that using High Side Injection will
eliminate the problem, however, using a popular 220 mod that doesn't
change the LO multiplication factor results in a HSI fundamental of of
nearly 26 megahertz; something way out of the original range of the
ICOM. I wanted a LO fundamental down in the 17.XXX range so we decided
to look at other modifications on the internet and found two that indeed
used the formula of LO=RX-11.2/12 instead of the original divide by 9.
We weren't extremely happy with the tuning of the modifications found on
the net, so we decided to do our own research to perfect the Mastr II to
220 receiver mods. Not only did we stabilize the conversion, but we
gained several dB of sensitivity in the process. I have never been
satisfied with the 220 receiver conversion on the Mastr II, until now.
Our bench research showed a lack of LO injection to be the problem with
the current mods on the internet. We converted 2 receivers in the shop
today just to be sure our conversion can be duplicated. Both turned out
to be around -117 dBm for 12 dB sinad with no preamplifier; slightly
better than book spec as determined by the HP 8920 service monitor.
This modification allows the 220 LO fundamental to be close to the
original High-Band fundamental. At some point in time I'll write up the
new mods for the 220 Mastr II receiver and post them on the Mastr II Dot
Com website. Of course, simple HSI seems to fix the problem in the UHF
band with no ill effects, and the X12 LO multiplier scheme seems to fix
the problem totally on the 220 band, even with LSI.

Hope this helps, Comments welcome.

[Repeater-Builder] Need info TPL PA6-1-BE Rpt UHF

2005-02-21 Thread Steve

I have a rack mount (very heavy) TPL amp that I need info about.
I would like to use it on a HAM repeater.
Looks like a well built unit, internal PS, fans, large heat sink.
Questions are:
What is the drive level?
What is the output level?
What are the rear panel connections (V+,+sense,V-,-sense,and remote)
Are there any connections to the above to make it function.
And, lastly, if anyone has manual that they would like to sell or
copy?

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Choosing Commercial UHF Repeater

2005-02-21 Thread CookTowersInc

Hello All,
The Kenwood TKR-840 is a fine repeater. But I have noted
that
most of the Hams seem to buy the Kenwood TKR-850 and
they
work very well. We have a Ham who has a Maggiore
High pro at one of our tower site that is very
high
RF and works well. We have a 50,000 watt FM
broadcast
station, a digital TV station that I have no clue what
it
puts out. 3 cell carriers, 9 trunking systems some
800
some 900 and a new 460 5 channel trunk. The Ham
repeater
is in a rack right next to and in the same room as this
whole
mess. It has a TX/RX duplexer and circulator. No fancy stuff
just the repeater and a 1200 MHz duplex link. Seems to do just fine. The antenna
is a DB-420 about 50 feet below the FM broadcast antenna.
Very Best,
Dean Westbrook, EE,PE.

It is a alarm monitoring unit. With appropriate power sensors it can
monitor transmit power, SWR, various voltages, PTT, etc. It is also capable
of remotely controlling outputs for control functions. If connected to a
phone line, it can also page or call pre-programmed numbers when certain
criteria is met, such as high VSWR, low power, AC power fail, etc.
I have a unit on one of my repeaters. It works pretty well.

In fact, I just checked-they say they bounced msg 11290 on 2/17; msg
11290 STILL does not exist yet on the radios-4-sale group! The most

It's not the server that's stupid, it's the people that run it.

I remember this coming up a few years ago-wasn't it a case of the LO in
the receiver getting close to the same freq as the tx (or one of the
multiplier stages?), and in a duplex app, the tx freq was getting into
the IF of the rx...or something like that...

Sorry, Nate, but read it again-they say they got a bounce from a message
that didn't exist in the group yet! And this has happened a bunch of
times over the last year or two.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Line loss

2005-02-21 Thread CookTowersInc

Hello All,
This is all good and right on the money!
But reminder that every 3 db cuts your
signal in half. I would not use the 9913
on a repeater my self you mite want to
look into some 1/2" Hard-Line type coax.
Less loss and you will not get the static
type of noise of 9913 type coax.
Be very careful of buying used Hard-Line
type of coax. Unless you can sweep it
to make darn sure it is good. Just a small
amount of moisture will mess up a whole
roll of Hard-Line type coax. A bad fork
lift operator will mess up a roll as well.
We get Hard-Line type coax at work some
times brand new right off the truck from
the manufacture and when we sweep it
with a TDR it is bad. So be very careful
of any used or take down Hard-Line type
coax unless YOU can test it and not who
you are buying it from. There is an old
saying and that is it all ways is good at the
Ham fest.
I also agree do not get cheap on your
antenna. If you need small on 440 the
DB-404 is a good low cost omni. You can
go to the repeater-builders page. There is
a list and info on all types of antennas
and where to buy them.
Just my two cents.

[Repeater-Builder] FS Spectrum/Hamtronics 222Mhz repeater

2005-02-21 Thread Joe

I have finally decided to sell my 224.66Mhz repeater due to no activity in
the area. The duplexers have already been sold, but the transmitter and
receiver is for sale. I am keeping the S-Com 5k controller that I was
using on this repeater.

Hamtronics R-220 receiver
Communications Specialist TS-32 PL decoder
GLB Electronics preselector
The receiver is tested and measures less that .2uV for 12dB Sinad
RX frequency is 223.06Mhz

Spectrum SCT-110 exciter, measures 12 watts output
BA-70RPT PA, measures 48 watts output (specification is 50 watts for the
220 PA)
Communications Specialist SS-32 PL encoder
TX frequency is 224.66Mhz

Both are on rack mount plates, connections are brought out to terminal
strips on the rear panel.
All boards are in cast aluminum cases. Photos available at:
http://users.adelphia.net/%7Ek1ike/

Asking $300.00

 Question,

Will the 4 transistor PA fit on the continuous duty heatsink? In other words,
was the heatsink drilled for both types of amps? I never thought to look at
this.

[Repeater-Builder] UHF Micor Mobile Exciter Questions

Hello Group,

I have just picked up several UHF Micor mobiles and have several
questions before testing them. The 3 wires for the LLA or transmit
pre-driver are not connected; can someone tell me which pins they
should connect to?? Also, what exciter pin is used to switch between
Standard and Widespaced?? Thanks.
