[Repeater-Builder] Hardware info request

2005-03-30 Thread wpru364

I found two Trident cr-355's in my basement I had forgotten about. I
have no information as to what the are used for or how to do anything
with them. Does anyone know anything about them or how I can get some
info about them. From the way it looks I am thinking it is a trunking
controller of a voter.

If someone is interested I am interested in selling one or both of
them to get a repeater controller.

Please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you have any info that can help me.

Thanks.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Linking Question

2005-03-30 Thread Ralph Hogan

If the link requires PL, then turn off the PL when there is no COS from a
user. (Many controllers can be rigged to implement this, or you can make a
circuit to mute PL driven off COS gone). This dead hang time after a user
lets up is usually when the repeater tries to ID. The distant repeater wont
repeat it since it doesn't hear PL on the signal.

However, normally if the link radio is established on a 'remote-base' port
of both systems, the controller is usually programmed to not send ID audio
down a remote base port, so no Id-overlay problem.

In my quest to learn about building my first repeater, I have thought
of a potential problem.

If I wanted to set up an RF link to another repeater, how do you
overcome the potential problem of each of the repeaters ID'ing
(walking on each other) at the same time. (I could see this happening
if both repeater sites were idle at time of key-up. (Given that most
repeaters ID in 10 minute intervels). Is there something that should
be done during construction?

Thanks.

used for a half-duplex port
Repeater(rx and tx units) on the main port and second port is the link say
for simplex or to another repeater..

but there are many others avail. out there. check the below link out for

Bob, if you really want to go low cost, you can wire a simple
transistor switch from the unsquelch indicator of one radio to the
PTT of the other and use one of the $8 K1EL CW ID chips to keep you

I used to breadboard all my controllers using 2N3711, 2N3702 and 4066
bilateral switches, a capacitor for RC repeater tail and I had about 5 buck
and a couple hours in it installed. Had plenty of surplus CW ID'ers and had
a repeater on-line for less than 40 bucks including radio and crystals. I
now am using a MCC controller in both my repeaters but am looking seriously
at a NHRC, I have five repeaters to build in the next 6 months.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: A Good 440 Anttena

2005-03-30 Thread bradley glen

Hi

Having worked with such patterns -the result is up to
your imagination.

The most commonly used was an omni and yagi.
EG:A 6dB omni phased with a yagior corner reflector .
This gives you a typical Butternut pattern as viewed
from the top.
This would be used in a case where a 2-stacked dipole
of 3dB gave good all round coverage but a specific
direction required additional coverage.
The c-450 uhf system used many of these types of
patterns to give the highways the best coverage
possible.
I am surprised many ham repeaters do not do the same.I
have been doing some experimentation with cross-field
coverage using the same principle.

Others have indicated that you need to talk with marc about getting
a coordination. I seriously doubt that you are going to get one on 2m.
2m is overpopulated with repeaters. Why not create one at 1.2GHz,

You were correct, 2135. I just wasn't turning it hard enough. The latch

the correct key.

No, the gentleman ask specifically about a controller that was, feature
wise, comparable to the RC-85. Being an owner of ACC products for over
20 years, I knew he also meant 'worked like' or 'programmed like' as
well. While the NHRC-10 might be a good choice, I have no personal
experience with it. It's very rare that I don't mention NHRC, but I'm
sure these other guys enjoy a plug now and then too.
Fair enough?

[Repeater-Builder] New vs Old Junk

2005-03-30 Thread Paul Finch

Hello,

Who was the person that was saying new was better than old junk the other
day? I tried to key my 3 month old TKR-850 repeater today and it was there
but real low in signal strength and I was only about a mile from the site.
I knew something was wrong! Ya see I be smart about these things. Anyway
there is no power out, this radio has been in service three months and
broke, my Johnson's have been in service 7 plus years and no problems, yes
new is better that old junk, right!?!?! The UHF Johnson 559 rated at 25
watts has been running 40 for a long time!

I will look into the problem and let everyone know what I find. To be fair
about this, the other day someone turned the air conditioner in my tower
building off and the ambient air temperature went up to 140 degrees F, but
the Johnson's survived, go figure! Matter of fact, everything did except
the new Kenwood.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] New vs Old Junk

2005-03-30 Thread DCFluX

Let me know what the number is on the final power module.

The new Mitsubishi RA series have problems with the heat sink die not
being flat. In the center there is about a .8mm indentation for no
reason. The datasheet specify it is nessacary to mill the heat sink to
fit this, but it is not economical as each module is slighlty
different, so most just stick heatsink grease in the gap and call it
good.

I recently built a 1250 MHz amp based on the RA18H1213G and I got
metal poisioning from milling the copper die by hand with 600 grit
sand paper. But you can use a belt sander with a fine belt and where
gloves and a mask.

Repair may be possible, pop the plastic cover of the module and search
for hair line fractures like the old MA-27 in the Yaseu 5100. But
usually I have heard that the entire board cracks when something ain't
right mechanical wise in the modules.

On a related note, if the module is not getting B+ or Bias voltage it
will attenuate the incoming signal up to 60dB.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] 2 meter coors?

2005-03-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Some repeater coordination groups have set aside a Test Pair on 2-Meters
(and sometimes other bands) where you can try out having a repeater.
They're sometimes also called SNP (Shared, Non-Protected) Repeater
channels. In Oregon, it's 145.25, in Washington state there are two -
145.13 and 145.29 (which is interesting because there's a somewhat busy
145.29 Repeater coordinated in Oregon just 60 miles or so away from the
Washington SNP area.)

Restrictions for setting up a repeater on the Test Pair sometimes are that
you must use CTCSS, keep it below some maximum elevation, run no more than
25 watts output or so, use an antenna with less than some particular amount
of gain, and have no links or crossband interties, IRLP, autopatches, etc.
in use on it. You may find out that you're sharing the channel with other
repeater(s), and no one has exclusive rights to the channel. But it's a
good place to start, if all channels are full in your area.

Sometimes, you have to show the frequency coordinators that your Test Pair
repeater is operational before you can get a coordination for your own
coordinated repeater channel. Then you might be able to sell your Test
Pair crystals to someone else who wants to go through the same routine.

Larry

No one here can possibly answer that. It all depends on where you are.
If you live in Wyoming, I'd bet you might be able to. New York City, and
I'll bet not.

You have to talk with your frequency coordinator.
