We had 'PL' capability 35 years ago and were using it then.

history is that way back when there was no PL capability; this was
followed by transmitting 100 Hz PL; then programmable PL xmit; and now
I see many more radios capable of PL encode AND decode.
Our situation is that we have small local workgroups who need to
converse locally, and occasionally chat with everybody in all groups.
If I thought about it, I could probably figure out a best way to
arrange this with simplex separate TR freqs, and different PLs.
However, it might be too complicated for the average user to deal

You're absolutely correct. I was using the term simplex in the

  universal
definition, the term half duplex is often used to describe TX and
  RX
on two different frequencies but not simultaneously. Some might
consider that practice to be wasteful of spectrum.

Perhaps a more efficient alternative is to configure the simplex
repeater radio to use different CTCSS tones for TX and RX. The user
radios must, of course, be capable of encoding and decoding
  different
tones, but that capability is not often found in Amateur grade
  radios.

True, but there are instances where a SR makes sense. Quick deployment for low
volume comms is one. Rescue ops, public service events, etc...

Training BEFOREHAND is always recommended so that the users can become
accustomed to its odd behavior. PL is also recommended to keep the SR from
repeating everything on the frequency and annoying co-channel users.

A simplex repeater controller connected to a radio set for split operation
(different TX and RX freqs) CAN eliminate the problem of hearing everything
twice, at the expense of being careful not to double on the input freq. and
having a delay between RX and TX. HTs or mobiles programmed reverse split of
repeater radio will operate somewhat like a regular repeater, without the
simultaneous RX/TX.

Prefer SCOM, but open to other suggestions. Ideally the controller
 would cost $200 or less.

 Needed features:
 - CWID / voice ID (would be sweet, but will settle for CW)
 - LINKS to multiple half/full duplex repeaters (maybe control 2 or 3
 repeaters)
 - Built-in CTCSS encode/decode
 - Remote-programmable
 - Macros
 - Switch sensors to broadcast alerts (door open, fan dead, security,
 etc.)
 - Adjustable squelch tail for COS, and CTCSS
 - Small footprint

I've looked at several brands, but can't decide which one would
provide the best service. I'm building a 2M event repeater.

Anybody got used SCOM/5K /7K they'd be willing to part with?

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Simplex repeater hardware

2005-05-19 Thread Joe Jarrett

The frequency response of a 2 way communications system is well within the
frequency response of one of the 8 KHz sample rate ChipCorders. The only
decisionwould beto select the longest possible message time.
The ISD1416 gets you 16 seconds, the ISD2560 gets you 60 seconds. Both of
these are probably available through Digikey.

  issue).73,Don

Ow! They were always high, but 1.5x NA?! That's highway robbery!

Where else are you going to go?

Kinda like Ludlow and Newberry Springs... the one restaurant
in town has a monopoly on all the Highway 40 traffic...

[Repeater-Builder] CTCSS decode/DTMF tone problem

2005-05-19 Thread Paul Holm

I'm working on adding Echolink to our 2M machine
(pl 146.2) here and am using a Kenwood TM-241 for a link radio. This rig
does not have PL decode so we added an outboardTranscendient CDC-01
decoder board. Using the RX out pin off of the mic connector for
discriminator tap. PL decode works greatexcept when DTMF tones are
sent through the repeater. As soon as DTMF is sent, audio from the decoder
drops out. This is not happening when testing on a simplex frequency, only
when sending DTMF tones through the repeater. Any ideas about what's
happening? Thanks.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] RB Antennas??

2005-05-19 Thread Scott Zimmerman
Jon,

That's correct. They are 2 and 3 pieces that screw together with a bell type
furrel. Unlike most ham grade antennas though, the bell is oriented properly to
keep the water out.

The specs and size remonds me of the opek uvs-200 and uvs-300.
Similar models exist from greaterland...basically made in Taiwan if I recall
correctly.

Do these come as 2 and 3 piece units such that you have to connect internals
before you attach the sections together ?

[Repeater-Builder] Extra Dayton Ticket Available

2005-05-19 Thread scottn3xcc
Fellows,

I have 1 extra ticket to the Dayton Hamvention starting tomorrow. The
first person to offer $25 for it gets it. That's the same as it would
cost you at the door, without having to stand in line for hours.

Please Reply direct to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
