RE: OT Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Failure to communicate.....

2006-02-18 Thread Mike Perryman K5JMP
That is the great thing about ham radio... so many modes, so many projects
to pursue! We have such a diverse hobby that there is something for
everyone. I try to practice the old live and let live philosophy... to
each his own. I just enjoy building devices, testing them... and refining
the design until something else catches my eye.

Most of my old projects sit on the shelf gathering dust until field day, or
a demonstration event. Then you get to show off your work, and let the new
guys (we work hard to interest the young folks) have a peek of just how much
this hobby has to offer!! I have ATV gear that hasn't been powered-up in
over 3 yrs, but I keep it because I built it from scratch and the kids need
to know that you can do anything you want to in life. All you have to do is
be willing to work for it. For the most part, ham radio and project
building instills these values.. values that seem to be dwindling in our
society these days.

Build away.. learn all you can. Just don't forget to pass a little along
to the new guys.

Not ranting, or preaching... Just happy I found the hobby! Although, my
wife likens it to an addiction.. ;-)

I guess I will have to say something on this subject as it is coming down to
the same arguments! Everyone in ham radio has an interest and for some that
interest is CW, some it is SSB,FM,RTTY,PACTOR, Building, Operating,
contesting, Sat work, Volunteers, and the list goes on and on! Stop beating
a dead horse! If someone gets a license they at least had to put an effort
forward and should be applauded for that! When it comes to jerks there are
jerks in every walk of life. You ignore them and move on! Heck, I seldom
pick up a microphone as I like to build and Repeaters is something I enjoy
building and learning from other builders. I could care less how long
someone is a ham or what class they are as its their actions that count! Oh
that's right this is the repeater builders group isn't it? hmm , Guess I
will have to go back to trying to get these darn M/A Panthers to work on 440
so I can make a mobile repeater ! 73's Steve N4YZA K

Lately the local crew of newbies has gotten into the habit of doubling
so much with each other that now they start sentences, and four words
into the sentence, they say check for double and un-key.

Of course, they don't seem to get that they could just un-key briefly
and listen and re-key without the added comment every time, and it'd be
a LOT faster. They're probably worried that someone else will mash
their way in during the slight un-key -- they're all so quick-keyed
about things. If all the guys they were talking to wouldn't just mash
down instantly on their PTT's every time they heard someone else unkey,
they might actually be able to have a civil conversation!

Adult Attention Deficit Disorder poster-children, I swear. Check for
double, indeed.

I remember being so excited about my radios when I was a newbie, that I
really really wanted to talk, but even back then, I think I could get
through 10 minutes of not keying up and talking in a round-table!
Listen and comprehend aren't always in the cards with this new group.

Just unkey the damn radio momentarily and keep going, and learn to have
a normal-paced conversation where ten people don't need to talk at the
same time!

They did finally figure out that handing the conversation off to a
SPECIFIC person works better, but of course that means you actually have
to pay ATTENTION to who's there, who's left, etc... and maybe even a
couple of notes on who said what so you can add comments that continue
the CONVERSATION instead of just inanely blathering on about different
topics because you can't remember what the guy two people before you said!

They've even started picking on each other with it... Check for Bob...
Check for Fred... (names changed to protect? the innocent?)...

It's becoming my new Pet Peeve. I think I'll start doing it too and
saying something like, Checking for kids who can't wait to push their
PTT...

Oooh, and then leaving at least a 20 second pause to see if they can
EVER make it, to not key up for that long.

It's so tense, you can almost hear the relief in their voices when their
turn comes around -- like it's some kind of race. Out of breath and
hurring to get THEIR point in first about the last comment.

LOL!

Oh well, I'm glad they're excited about radio!

[Repeater-Builder] What is A Repeater??

2006-02-18 Thread Doug Fitts W7FDF
I just spent the past hour [in between two cups of tea] reading ALL the
posts from this list [from Friday], had a really good laugh and almost
fell otta my chair here in the shack with quips like, at our VE
sessions, state up front that you are not allowed to copy dots and
dashes and then go back and decode them,We have a local examiner who
not only requires 100% solid copy... he also requires you to send as
well, they didn't need to attach their amplified microphone to
their new 2 meter rig, Failure to communicate. turn up your
squelch, I can't hear you is another one!, Ahh yes-the tinfirgudbudy
crowd. Or as we like to call them, the 'light-bar brigade'.Turn up your
volume. I can't hear you, Turn up your RF Gain, you arent using enough
power to get into the repeater. On, and on ,and on and

Just last week I was listening to a conversation on one of our local 440
UHF repeaters and the fella often instead of saying, yes, or Roger
That or OK. He often kept repeating, 10-4!.

Now indeed I just have to make one or a few comments then throw out a
way for everyone on this list to educate these newcomers to the ranks
of Amateur Radio. My comments are that I got my Ham license back in 1959
[I was a CB'er before I got my Ham tix and not ashamed to admit it] and
was tested in front of an FCC examiner [641 Washington Street the old
federal building, NYC where the twin towers were built and once stood].
I did the Morse Code testing having to receive and send back then, at
5wpm for the Novice then 13wpm for my General!. I have seen how
attitudes have changed these past 47 years [February was the month I
tested] yet the hobby still is the BEST on this planet, even with some
of its faultsand I still ONLY have a General Class tix! That will
change come July when I test for my Extra and its about time!!

So having said that, regardless on where the person started [citizen
band frequencies aka 11-meters], or some guy or gal named Joe Schmoe or
Sally Three-Fingers that can't count to ten, or know the difference
between a 1/2 wave and a 1/4 wave mobile antenna or is shown a resistor
and can't read it [you know, the colored bands around the device]. We as
the so-called Oldtimers [I'm 62] need to help these folks succeed in
their quest to be the BEST Ham Radio Operator they can be. This will
ONLY come from education, hand holding, on air conversation through your
local friendly repeater and sidebars of one-to-one sharing of
experiences and knowledgeagreed?

So as I go outside to pull the weeds, cleanup the front yard landscaping
rocks otta the gutter [the kids like to roll their bikes on my property
with CCR's] and other Honey-Do's. I'd like to come back to this list
this afternoon and see that indeed some of you can select a topic and
educate the many new Hams in the fraternity.OK?

So answer this thread [if you are bold enough and have the time] with
some educational thoughts and experiences about Repeaters. What is a
repeater, how does it work, what components are used to make up the
system, what does the COS circuit or PL circuit do in a typcal repeater,
how much power is normally required to access a typical repeater from
the mobile, why do Hams NOT use an amplified microphone in the FM mode
and finally, how and why is it necessary for a typical repeater to ID
[CW or voice] and the operator to ID as well every ten minutes and NOT
with every over or exchange of conversation. Many, many subjects so
pick one, pick any subject of your choice and have at it.

I'll be back.best 73!!

Doug W7FDF
Vail, Arizona U.S.A.
PS: I am a former two-way shop owner from the NYC area, have been
designing and building repeaters since about 1979 and operate three Ham
repeaters here at my home [449.925, 448.450 and 927.8500] still employed
[in my third career change] as a Tucson Bus Operator the past 12
years...so why can't I afford a Golden Screwdriver?he he he

And BTW...all of those other files you are asking about have been sent out

anything I'll be glad to help.

What all do you get for the $1200? I have a GR300 (basically the
same repeater), turned the power down to 21 watts, on solar power
and only paid $250 for it (not a scratch on it). Brand new I was told
the GR300 sells for around $1200 to $1500. Just FYI. What
controller comes with it? They come new with an option of 6
different controllers.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] GR-500

2006-02-18 Thread Eric Lemmon
Phil,

The GR500 Repeater is a wall-mounted unit that incorporates the familiar
R1225 full-duplex transceiver. It comes with a thermostatically-controlled
fan and a power supply, with space to install a mobile notch duplexer. Of
course, such a duplexer is useful only when the TX-RX separation is around 5
MHz. The same R1225 radio is also used in GR400, RKR1225, and GR1225
repeaters. If the GR500 is brand-new and comes fully equipped and
programmed, $1200 seems like a good price.

I have three R1225 repeaters in service, two on VHF and one on UHF, plus a
portable repeater on a widespread 2m pair. The radio is available in either
a 1-10 watt model or a 25-50 watt model. It is an entry-level, no-frills
repeater that has a built-in controller and Morse ID-er. It's not
especially sensitive, but it works and is relatively inexpensive. The UHF
repeater has been operating on solar power for over three years, sitting on
a cold and windy mountain ridge.

Depending upon the band and frequencies you intend to use, the GR500 may or
may not be a good choice. I'm curious about your specific needs, and why
you picked the GR500. Please elaborate...

You want buttons?

Here's buttons: Yaesu FT-8500 with the FS-10 (all-in-the-mic) remote control
system. Must be something like 30 buttons, a joystick, and four rotating
controls (volume and squelch for each band). But they forgot the ECHO!!!
hehehe

I have one in the mobile. Took a bit of getting used to (my hands have a
tendency to push buttons and spin the volume controls while handling the
mic) but it is nice to not have to reach for the radio head while driving...

I have connected the Rangr loudspeaker O/P

primary tx a/f to a small amp, so I can hear
the tones, cw id etc. I made JP3 and applied 12v
for a few seconds, then removed JP3 and from
another radio tx,ed into the rptr rx. I the tx,ed
again and sent dtmf 1234 to set the password, but I never
got the CW OK signal.
On the nhrc there are 5 led,s a yellow, green and red, then
another green and red. I take it the yellow is dtmf received
this is lit when I send dtmf tones. The green is CAS and red
is TX primary channel. The 2nd green and red are CAS and TX
secondary channel.
I take it the CAS is only needed to make the nhrc key the rptr
tx and is not needed to program the controller. So any ideas as
to why I can't hear the tones, id,s etc

Do you have the CAS hooked up from your receiver on the radio thay
you are using for the receiver? If not that would be my guess as to
why the controller doesn't know that you are talking to it.

[Repeater-Builder] NHRC-4 Controller

2006-02-18 Thread steve

Hi

small problem, I think. I want to use an nhrc-4
controller with
2 Ge Rangr mobiles as a 6mtr rptr.
I have connected the controller audio in got
primary channel
to the rx loudspeaker output, and on the controller
tx a/f out I have a small amp, so I can hear the tones. CW id etc.
When I tx from another set to try and set a new
password on
the nhrc the yellow DTMF received led works OK with
each dtmf tone sent, but I don't seem to get any CW OK from the tx
af
or any cw id.
There are 5 leds on the nhrc a yell. a green, a red
them another green and red. I take it the 1st 3 are for the primary channel
ie
dtmf received, cas and tx, and the last 2 are cas
and tx for secondary channel. I take it the CAS is only needed to key
the
rptr tx and any setup can be done by jst inputing
the tones on the primary channel. Ideas please

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Alinco Ham Repeater??????

2006-02-18 Thread Andrew G.

Chris, They make EXCELLENT repeaters for ham use. We have a pair of Alinco DR-235 220mhz radios on our repeater. I interfaced them to an ACC RC-85 controller. The TX drives a TE Systems 100watt amplifier into a 6cavity sinclair duplexer. The RX has an ARR pre-amp with great results (little to no desense @ 100watts). Highly recommended.Andy KC2GOW__Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
