It sounds like you ran into the same problem I did. Here's the speculation

I guess I'll answer my own question. The problem was accompanied by error

that when Retrospect thinks a tape or disk is bad, it stops the backup and
 waits for another media.

In the last couple of days I've seen two installation where backups fail
because Retrospect wants another media. Even though the tape or disk
weren't full, the Summary window for the Backup Set said "Appending requires
another member". In one case we were backing up to Onstream ADR tapes. The
tape only had about 3.5GB on it, and it holds about 15 GB. The other was a
Orb Disk using Retrospect Express. It also was _way_ below capacity. In at
least one case I know the media wasn't marked missing. I'm not sure about
 the second case.

 Any ideas what's happening?

As you can see, it's not saying that it is even trying to execute the
script. The script is active during the specified time.

When I look in 'CONFIGURE-BACKUP SET-Current Backup Set' it tells
me under Available "appending requires another member".

So I'm sure that the tape is full, but my question is, why doesn't
the log tell me this? Or at least that the script failed to execute
because of an error. Looking at the log gave me no clue of what was
going on after I cleaned the head.

Re: Windows 2000 Server and Mac Clients

2000-09-04 Thread Eric Ullman

Hi,

Sounds like a good setup, Phil. You will have to use TCP/IP to back up the
Mac clients, as there isn't any AppleTalk client support in the Windows
version of Retrospect. Other than that, you shouldn't have anything to be
concerned about. Retrospect Workgroup Backup for Windows works just like the
Mac version.

Have fun!

A client of mine is wants to install a backup system. He has 2 Macs and one
Windows 2000 system. We'd like to make the W2000 system the server, using
an Onstream ADR 30GB IDE Drive, since the hardware is much less expensive
than the SCSI hardware for the Mac. (Performance is not a high priority in
this case.) I haven't installed a W2000 Retrospect Workgroup Backup yet.
I'm just wondering if there are any serious issues I should be aware of.
Can the Mac clients use AppleTalk, or must they use TCP/IP when backing up
 to a W2000 system.

16 MB catalog limit in 4.3

2000-09-04 Thread Lawrence E. Bakst

I just upgraded to 4.3 and was happy that the 2 GB file limit was
fixed. Imagine my surprise when I ran into a 16 MB catalog limit. See
the log entry below. With today's costs of storage at $4/GB (recent
Fry's ad for 40 GB drive @ $160), I think Dantz would be well advised
to remove all limits in Retrospect.

Can anyone comment if the 16 MB catalog limit is going to fixed soon?
Are there any other limits I will run into after this one. Can
someone describe why this limit exists? My guess us that there is a
24 bit quantity in a data structure that causes the limit and that
the other byte is used for something else. If that is the case, it
doesn't sound too hard to fix.

I have to say I am really disappointed that after the long wait for
the 2 GB limit fix (I believe it's more than a year since support
existed in the OS) I run smack into another limit.

Log entry:
Can't save Snapshot in mac-file-terah-a, error -25051 (file backup
set catalog limited to 16 MB)

Best,
