Re: [RDD] Rivendell v3.3.0
I've done that. And the answer.: No matter what kind of system is acting as the server. Deb10 or Centos. The database performance is the same.! Looks like a mysql client problem... Am 30.03.2020 19:41, schrieb Lorne Tyndale: Tim, With regards to the database slowness issue(s), it sounds like it could be a MySQL setting, but I admit that I have not tried compiling V3 on a debian based system, so I have not run into this. But for troubleshooting, have you tried setting up a Rivendell database and filestore server on CentOS system with the workstations running your Ubuntu 18.04 build which then access your database running on CentOS? If the performance is then adequate you could maybe compare the MySQL configuration between Ubuntu and CentOS to see what might be different. I know this might seem like a lot of work to perform during this time when it seems like every day brings a tasklist of 20 or more new things that all needed to be done yesterday. But just something to think about. Lorne Tyndale Greetings, We have been running Rivendell since version 1 almost ten years it seems. We have always been a debian based facility and never had any problem with that until version 3. Although I have no real problems other than getting the dependencies installed to get version 3 compiled on Ubuntu 18.04 The slow database issue that you speak of has kept us from moving on to version 3. Searching can be painfully slow depending on how many songs you have in a category, The log load at midnight can take 30 seconds or more which is unacceptable. We actually run Elementary OS in our studios which is a Ubuntu derivative ( 18.04). I personally have no problem with the idea of running The appliance for Centos, but when trying to do that have run into many hardware issues on our current computers which I don't have with Ubuntu. So that is a non-starter. So the argument seems to come down to why don't you replace all your hardware, (12 workstations) run centos and get with the program. Why do I feel like I'm hearing a Microsoft argument. If I wanted to replace everything every year I would have just kept running a windows based automation like I was ten years ago. I've really no problem to use Centos. It is my fav. system für my mail and fileserver.. But what if your system has a brandnew chipset, not supported hardware like my touchscreens, or some trouble with a virt. environment.(GUI freeze sometimes.) I don't need to use the latest ubuntu /fedora spin... Only debian stable. And its running very well except the slow database access in some situations... Thats all. Most of the high priced competitors who are Windows based will NOT run on a Windows Server OS. If I go to Help - > Audio Device Info, Audacity says "No Devices Found." Any ideas? Rivendell takes over a sound card, so you can't use it for anything else at the same time. This is by design. This is true. The other option is to use the audio routing app JACK ( https://jackaudio.org/). JACK enables sharing of audio resources between higher-level applications (and is supported in Rivendell). The Rivendell wiki has some information about implementing JACK on a Rivendell computer. In my opinion the current best practice is to let Rivendell start the JACK service daemon and use the JACK Clients entries in RDAdmin->Manage Hosts->->JACK Settings. One significant caveat when using JACK and Rivendell 3.X is that jackd(1) MUST run as Linux user `root`. MUST.?? I've added a line in systemd configfile "user=rd" and can run all other application like audacity, VLC, qjackctl,stereotool... as normal user. But after the switch from 3.0 to 3.1 i got some problems with laggy response inside the voicetracker and rdlibrary/edit marker... as written in my post 7 days ago.. Previous Rivendell versions could work around this constraint, but it's not possible without code changes in Rivendell 3.X. This means that all applications using JACK must also run as Linux user `root`. This, to me, is another significant reason to use Rivendell computers only for Rivendell applications, and use different computers for general audio applications. ___ Rivendell-dev mailing list Rivendell-dev@lists.rivendellaudio.org http://caspian.paravelsystems.com/mailman/listinfo/rivendell-dev

I would be happy to have someone find a solution as this will keep me from moving version 3 into production. Initially I thought it was a problem with the distro, maybe it still is, but then I discovered that 2.19.3 does work fine although it did seem a little bit slower than on Ubuntu 14.04. After experiencing this on Ubuntu I then tried Debian 9 with same issue. Perhaps Debian and by extension Ubuntu have changed something that is causing this however there is the big performance difference between rivendell 2 and 3. All the testing I did was with a networked stand alone MySQL server. Then just to see I installed the server locally with same results. Really shows a slow down when loading a new days log chain, can take anywhere from 8 to 20 seconds for the log to load and begin play. I have exhausted my knowledge trying to figure this out. Hi I've installed the latest 3.x release on Debian 9. The server is running inside a KVM virtual machine without any problem. Just like the server for the 2.x system. I've opened the mariaDB Server to the local network with changing the bind address line to 0.0.0.0. The audio ist shared with NFS. Then i installed on a physical machine the first rd3 client. It looks very good. But it seems that the SQL connection is very small. Changing the "show only the 1st.100 Carts" to show all in rdlibrary takes one minute. Open the "edit marker" dialog, too. The network is a switched 1GB/s lan, all clients are connected to the same switch. Does anybody know how to improve the SQL speed.? Do i have made an error in the sql config.? [RDD] RD3 - Debian 9/64
Hi Has anyone ever tried to compile Rivendell 3 on Debian 9? I attach my notes here. The compile works, but then the connection between CAED and mysql fails. Tested manually with /usr/local/sbin/caed... By the way, I would prefer to run caed ripcd and rdctachd with user rights, so that other jack clients will still work. (Stereotool, CALF, VLC ..) On RD2 Debian 8 i use three .service files with success.. --snip-- cp caed.service /etc/systemd/system cp ripcd.service /etc/systemd/system cp rdcatchd.service /etc/systemd/system Then enable them to start on bootup systemctl daemon-reload systemctl enable caed.service systemctl enable ripcd.service systemctl enable rdcatchd.service - # Install manual for Alpha 3 automake libqt4-sql-* mysql-client libexpat1-dev qt4-dev-tools build-essential libjack-dev libtool libssl-dev libsamplerate-dev libsndfile-dev libcdparanoia0-dev libid3-dev nfs-common mp3val libcurl4-gnutls-dev libtwolame-dev libmad0-dev libjack-dev libmp3lame-dev apache2 mysql-server audacity qjackctl ntp libmp4v2-dev libfaad-dev libflac++-dev libsoundtouch-dev libasound2-dev libsamplerate0-dev libid3tag0-dev libsndfile1-dev libpam0g-dev # not needed... xmlto xsltproc Download sources https://github.com/ElvishArtisan/rivendell/archive/master.zip extract and change to new directory... Re: [RDD] New Wiki
Very good work..! Instead of using the CentOS Appliance it might be simpler on new hardware to run Rivendell on Ubuntu or Debian OS. I use Debian 8 and compile it from source with a small script/listing. My way to install on a new system ist to install from an image created with the tool Systemback. That output is installable from any DVD / flashdrive. Maybe such Iso files can be copied to the Wiki.??! Re: [RDD] Lubuntu Live CD [ SOLVED ]
Answer myself..;) Found the reason for caed is not able to run jackd. It's so simple...;o) On my Debian8, when installing qjackctl and as an dependency jackd is the new one called Jackd2.!!! And that version 2 can not run via systemd or in that case called from rivendell caed because of the need of a DBUS connection (X11).. Solution.: apt install jackd1 That removes jackd2 and replace it with jackd1. Problem solved..!! @Tim Your ISO has also installed jackd2.! Re: [RDD] Lubuntu Live CD
Very good work. I've done this based on Debian 8. And made the image with Systemback, too. :) I think, it shoud be possible to compile the next release with this commands from inside the source DIR..?! Assuming the path to the libexec is the same... autogen.sh configure --disable-hpi --libexecdir=/var/www/rd-bin make ...
