Man commits suicide at Ground Zero
 25-year-old reportedly distraught over President
 Bush's re-election
 The Associated Press
 Updated: 8:43 a.m. ET Nov. 7, 2004

NEW YORK - A 25-year-old from Georgia who was
 apparently distraught over
President Bush's re-election shot and killed himself
 at Ground Zero.
Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside
 the off-limits site,
said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority
 of New York and New
Jersey. A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide
 note was found, Coleman
 said.
Newsday, citing a police source it did not identify,
 reported Sunday that
Veal opposed the war in Iraq and was apparently
 distraught after the
 election.
Friends said Veal worked in a computer lab at the
 University of Georgia and
 was planning to marry.
I'm absolutely sure it's a protest, Mary Anne
 Mauney, Veal's supervisor at
the lab, told The Daily News. I don't know what made
 him commit suicide,
but where he did it was symbolic.
Police were investigating how Veal entered the former
 World Trade Center
site, which is protected by high fences and owned by
 the Port Authority.

[RollTideFan] CECIL HURT: Learning a lesson from premature celebrations

2004-11-06 Thread Jeff Todd
November 06, 2004

At the risk of offending any Republicans who aren't
feeling magnanimous after last Tuesday's landslide, it's
not time for the Alabama football team to drop that
banner just yet.

Yes, the Crimson Tide has reached the six-win plateau.
Yes, the Tide will get a nice bowl trip to Atlanta or
Nashville or Shreveport. Yes, it helps recruiting. Yes,
it's good for a team to get the added practice time that
comes with postseason eligibility.

But the real mission of this Alabama football team
should be more than beating the six most beatable teams
on its schedule. No, that's not a criticism. It's
certainly not a failure to recognize all the adversity
that Alabama's team has overcome to reach this point.
But there are still two regular-season chances at huge
wins -- one against an old rival that's coming off a
national championship, and a second against an even
bigger rival that's bidding for a national championship
of its own. That's where this team can really make its
mark in history in blazing letters.

Mike Shula says the same thing.

In the understandable excitement about earning a bowl
trip -- the first for all except the grizzled veterans
on this team -- Shula got an ice-water bath.

In the coach's estimation, it was premature.

The water on the back is nice, Shula said. But we
want to save that for when we win the big one.

That comment doesn't mean that Shula was slighting
Mississippi State. He spent a good part of his postgame
news conference praising MSU coach Sylvester Croom, and
it wasn't just lip service.

Croom brought in a Mississippi State team that could
easily have collapsed after some ignominious early
losses, and had them playing tough football. For all the
outside issues that had accompanied this game, it really
boiled down to the same thing that lots of
Alabama-Mississippi State football games have boiled
down to, long before either Shula or Croom were ever
hired. It was a hard-hitting, old-fashioned game -- not
mistake-free -- that was finally settled because Alabama
had more players and more playmakers (even in its
current state of attrition).

It wasn't a case where someone outcoached the guy on
the other sideline. Both coaches did just fine, and both
programs should feel comfortable with the man they have.

Alabama should feel comfortable -- but not content.

We've got to put it aside right away, Shula said when
asked again about bowl eligibility. We've still got a
lot of work to do. First, we've got to get healthy.
We've got to have a long discussion about what we're
going to do in practice this week, because we are beat
up. Then we've got to get focused on playing the
defending national champion (LSU) at their place. And
we've got to play better than we did tonight.

Alabama did improve in some areas on Saturday night. It
was the best game yet for Spencer Pennington at
quarterback -- not enough to make anyone forget Namath
or Stabler, but at least enough to make LSU and Auburn
aware that he can throw the ball. Brian Bostick made
some big pressure-packed kicks, although Brandon Brooks'
fumble on a punt return makes it hard to say that
special teams were improved. It wasn't the defense's
best game, but that's only because the Tide defense has
set a lofty standard for itself this season.

And all that might be good enough, given the
circumstances surrounding this season. It might be good
enough that Alabama has established a no-nonsense
attitude, and earned more respect than it had at the
beginning of the year. But there is a chance to do
more -- a lot more.

It might be a slim chance. LSU and Auburn are as good as
any teams Alabama has played this year. Only Tennessee
would be comparable. Against the Vols, Alabama was able
to make it close, but not to win, and winning is what
counts. So the Crimson Tide can't pause to take a deep
breath. It can't simply start dreaming of a bowl game.
The toughest two-game stretch of the schedule is ahead.

The Tide shouldn't say Mission Accomplished, without
seeing if it can go beyond anything it has done to this
point.

Not true. The proposed tax increas crossed county
 lines therefore it
is a state issue, not a local issue.

It didn't cross every county line in the state. Like I
said, only the people it pertained to should have been
voting on the proposal. What business do I, living in
Etowah County, have voting on a proposal that affects
you and Phyllis? There were several other proposals on
the ballot that didn't affect me, yet they were on my
ballot.

[RollTideFan] HuGe turnout

2004-11-02 Thread Jeff Todd
At the New Union Volunteer Fire Department, today. The
machine indicated I was the 380th voter as of 2:00 p.m.
The most I've ever seen was 411 very near closing time.
I waited until the rain started pouring down to go vote.
Good strategy as there was no line. Only drawback was
the KFC crumbs stuck to my ballot. I'm not kidding about
that. Got a good laugh at the expense of the geriatric
poll workers brigade. I walked in and handed Me-Maw my
water bill. (I just love being different!) She asked me
what it was and what did I want her to do with it. I
told her the man on television told me to take my water
bill to my polling place, present it, and the DNC would
pay my bill AND let me vote! Me-Maw just smiled and
said: Well...that'll be OK. Then she handed me a ticket
with the #2 scribbled on it. I handed the ticket to next
Me-Maw who asked me HOW was I going to sign my name. I
told her: with that pen in yore hand. I signed and
stepped down to Pa-Paw who handed me the ballot
splattered with Extra Crispy crumbs and dried chicken
skin. Voted straight Republican and NO on 6-of-9
amendments. Stuck my ballot in the machine and took an I
VOTED sticker and placed it above my heart as I walked
out the door. I'm proud to be an American.

 It's called hyperbole...sarcasm to make a point. I'll
 point it out from now
 on.

Gee, thanks!

Spencer, to my recollection, has never been a very
 good QB.

No, but he's been accused of having potential by more
than one coaching staff.

 He was a
 baseball player at Fayette

He also played football...QB, I do believe. And he's
also the son of a coach, if I'm not mistaken. That's
normally a pretty good foundation for becoming a decent
college QB. At least one that you don't have to worry
about costing you game, after game, after game. What is
this, Pennington's 4th year at BAMA? You'd think he'd
gotten enough coaching by this point to be a dependable
QB. NOT!

He was tutored at that time by the brilliant (sarcasm)
 Les
Koenning, who is famous for molding great passers
 Andrew Zow and Tyler Watts

Who, oh by the way, managed to win SEVENTEEN FUCKING
GAMES in TWO SEASONS!

(sarcasm.) He may have looked good in some
 scrimmages. Hell, he probably
looks good in practice at times also. But that's
 slightly different
(sarcasm) from making great throws against Tennessee
 et al.

I could've sat here for days and never figured that out!
Thanks for the insight, dude.

So now we're complaining that he has in the past
 looked strong, but now he
sucks because his position coach isn't decent,
 laying aside the fact his
HEAD coach was a QB coach in the NFL.

Jason, when Shula starts coaching QB's at BAMA, get back
with me. In the meantime, as long as that nimrod Dave
Rader is coaching QB's, and coordinating the offense -
WE ARE FUCKED!

OR, it just might be (sarcasm) that he was THIRD
 STRING for a reason going
in to the 2004 season, and that he's just not a very
 good quarterback.

Or, it might be because Shula flipped a fuckin' coin and
it landed on Guilon.

Maybe you'll get your way and we'll fire the architect
 of the No. 1 defense
 in AMERICA

HA! HA! HA! Are you talking about the same dickwad that
last year said there was no point in blitzing Timmy
Chang because he couldn't be sacked, even if he didn't
have an offensive line?

Alabama hasn't played one single team worth a damn this
season. And when they do, that defense you're bragging
about will get their nuts handed to them.

and fire Rader so we can find a decent position
 coach who can
turn Spencer back into the fine quarterback he once
 was (sarcasm).

What the hell's come over you? It wasn't that long ago
YOU YORESLEF were just as down on this coaching staff as
anyone, including myslef. What is it about this
glistening 5-3 record that's made such a believer out of
you? Oh! Never mind. I forgot; it's that #1 defense
that's got you whistling Yea Alabama!

And as for your derisive comments directed toward our
 head coach about the
 Prothro package,

Since when did the truth start getting under your skin
so badly?

you might be surprised by the end of the year, given
 what
 I've heard this week.

I would hope so, considering that Shula will probably
have a month to get ready for a bowl game.

No, I won't be a damn bit surprised. It'll be too late,
which will be par for the course.

started all over again. I could smell it on my breath,
taste it when I woke up, see the empties piled up in the

dropped in the floor (or did I bounce it off a wall?),
feel the unbearable pulsations in my head as I searched

[RollTideFan] Meckasun joke

2004-10-26 Thread Jeff Todd
There are two Mexicans who have been lost in the desert for
weeks and they're at death's door. As they stumble on, hoping
for salvation in the form of an oasis or something similar,
they suddenly spy, through the heat haze, a tree off in the
distance.
As they get closer they can see that the tree is draped with
rasher upon rasher of bacon. There's smoked bacon, crispy
bacon, life giving juicy nearly- raw bacon, all sorts.
Hey, Pepe says the first bloke Ees a bacon tree! We're
saved!
You're right, amigo! says Pepe. So Pepe goes on ahead and
runs up to the tree salivating at the prospect of food. But
as he gets to within five feet of the tree, there's the sound
of machine gun fire, and he is shot down in a hail of bullets.
His friend quickly drops down on the sand and calls across to
the dying Pepe.
Pepe! Pepe! Que pasa, hombre?
With his dying breath Pepe calls out, Ugh, run, amigo, run!
Ees not a Bacon Tree! Ees a... Ees a...
Yes, Pepe? Ees a what..?
Ees... a... ham bush.

 ESPN.com news services
The Florida Gators have fired third-year football
coach Ron Zook and his
staff, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit reported Monday.

Ron Zook and the Gators fell to 4-3 on Saturday.

Athletic director Jeremy Foley will meet with members
of the team this
afternoon and then announce that Zook and his staff
will coach the team for
the remainder of the season, Herbstreit reported.

The firing comes on the heels of the Gators' 38-31
loss Saturday to
Mississippi State, the worst team in the SEC.

The Gators are 4-3 this season, 20-13 overall under
Zook.

His teams haven't had the swagger of those under his
predecessor Steve
Spurrier, who lost only six home games in 12 years and
won a national
 championship.

When asked about his future Sunday, Zook focused on
next Saturday.

I just have to worry about this next game right now,
Zook said. That's
all I have any control over.

Although I think the MSU win was a fluke, brings up an
interesting topic.

Bama fans, in general, know that we have a lot of
injuries that may be
keeping us from winning some games. And we are having
to play above our
heads also. But what does the typical fan think if,
for some insane reason,
MSU comes in here and beats Bama in two weeks?

A loss to UT, Auburn and even LSU is some-what
understandable. But a loss to
MSU won't be easily explained away as simply lack of
depth or injury
related. We've been banking on the MSU game as our
ticket to a low-tier
bowl. With MSU's win over FLA, as flukey as it was,
the possibility of them
having the will-to-win against Bama is more prevalent
now than it was two
weeks ago. The Bama-MSU game wwas going to be
emotional for MSU anyway, but
this win (and MAYBE a win over UK) will give them
enough confidence to just
walk into T-Town and walk out with a win.

As they walk out, so may our bowl hopes. Unless we can
pull out a win
against LSU (a maybe at best) or Auburn (I hope our
bowl chances don't come
 down to this game).

The Florida Gators have fired third-year football

Ron Zook and the Gators fell to 4-3 on Saturday.

Athletic director Jeremy Foley will meet with
members
 of the team this
afternoon and then announce that Zook and his staff
 will coach the team for
the remainder of the season, Herbstreit reported.

The firing comes on the heels of the Gators' 38-31

Mississippi State, the worst team in the SEC.

The Gators are 4-3 this season, 20-13 overall under
 Zook.

[RollTideFan] No 6th year for Brodeenie

2004-10-25 Thread Jeff Todd
Posted by DBTide on October 25, 2004 at 12:12:49:

There will be no sixth of eligibility for quarterback
Brodie Croyle.
Alabama does not plan to apply for the medical hardship
waiver because he does not meet the NCAA's requirements
for an additional year, UA Associate Athletic Director
for Compliance Chris King said.

Croyle redshirted in 2001 and played three games this
season before suffering a season-ending injury. He will
be a senior in 2005.

Arkansas got some little bullshit penalty, but nothing
like we got. If I had to guess, they came up short due
to signing too many JUCO's.

So what's the difference if both teams have 74 players

Re: [RollTideFan] checking off

2004-10-24 Thread Jeff Todd
What's wrong with blaming CMS?

Franholio had it going on, no doubt about it. Some have
criticized his recruiting while at Bama, but under the
circumstances I can't imagine anyone else doing a better
job. With all the uncertainty facing the program during
his tenure, about all we could hope for was not to lose
any legacy recruits. I can't imagine a Keith Brown, or
D.J. Hall signing with Bama if they'd come along 3-4
years earlier.

But I just think all that uncertainty provided Franholio
with a convenient excuse for leaving. I don't think he
would have stayed with us much, if any longer regardless
of the circumstances at Bama. Certainly not long enough
to return Bama to domination.

Man, I'm looking for a silver lining wherever I can
find one. I realize
it's a lame excuse but it's the best I can come up
with without placing
the blame squarely at CMS's feet. On another note, and
I know there's
some that don't want to talk about this, but imagine
if Fran had stayed
the course and held the rope. That 2002 season wasn't
a fluke. I truly
believe we were in position to dominate the league the
way we did during
the 70's. Call me crazy, but that's what I saw at the
time.

I don't disagree with this theory, but all I was
saying is just imagine
if he had stayed for say 15 years and was happy and
content to close out
his career at ALABAMA. Bama would have dominated. How
many times have we
gone into places like Auburn and Knoxville and blew
away those two teams
like we did while he was here (throw in LSU as well).
That gave all of
us hope that Bama truly was on it's way back to the
place it used to be.
Nothing over the past 21 games has given us hope that
that will happen
any time soon. That is extremely frustrating. Yes
everyone says be
patient, but Fran showed us what could be done and he
did pretty quickly.

We'll never win one of these games with the coaching
staff we've got. I still despise Joe Kines, but I'd be
happy if Shula would just fire Rader and hire a real
offensive coordinator and give him full control of the
offense. In other words, Shula's fucking play calling
doesn't impress me a gotdamn bit. He needs to stop
calling plays like the national championship is on the
line, and start calling plays like a bowl invitation is
at stake. Someone needs to give Shula a fucking clue,
cause he damn sure ain't got one.

Bama Fans, one day, I don't know when, but one day
Bama is going to win
one of these close games in the 4th qtr and then
things will turn around
for them. Until that happens they will struggle with
confidence problems.

I can't help but wonder why the offense doesn't try to
run outside more.
Every running play seems to be geared toward running
inside. With
Darby's speed and his ability to make guys miss, I
wish they'd run the
toss sweep or do something to try to get the ball
outside the ends.

Damn, I'm hurting, I hate losing to Tennessee so much.

how Shula is still in

signature win that Shula needs to secure his

Are all eyes on Misery State as our 6th win or

the fuck slapped out of them occasionally. Say what you

As for CMS's motivational skills, I have to wonder if
that isn't yet another aspect of the job he's learning
on the fly. The reason I say that is I'm just not sure
how much motivation he was responsible for in the
positions he held in the NFL. He'd probably be surprised
at the results he'd get from just going ape-shit fuckin'
crazy every now and then. Damn all this buddy-buddy
shit. Any time you hear the term player's coach used,
it's bad news. John Hannah said the players from his era
played as hard as they did simply because they were
SCARED of Coach Bryant. Shula needs to put the fear of
God in coaches and players alike.

In other words...IAWTP!

[RollTideFan] The Morrall of the story

2004-10-12 Thread Jeff Todd
Backup quarterbacks can win - just ask Tide coach's dad
Tuesday, October 12, 2004
By PAUL GATTIS
Times Sports Staff [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Maybe it's a Shula thing, something in the genes that
passed from father to son.

Before the Super Bowl became an overblown circus known
more for its wardrobe malfunction than the game itself,
there was Don Shula.

He was a sideline fixture in the days when the Super
Bowl was just a game and not a corporate festival. The
father of Alabama's football coach guided teams to four
of the first eight Super Bowls.

And a more subtle aspect of that legacy is that twice
Shula did it with backup quarterbacks.

I won a lot of games with backup quarterbacks, Shula
said Saturday while watching Alabama's 45-17 win over
Kentucky.

To which son Mike might ask, What's the secret?

That's because the Crimson Tide has used three starting
quarterbacks in six games this season in compiling a 4-2
record.

Brodie Croyle started the first three games before
tearing a knee ligament and being sidelined for the
season. Marc Guillon then stepped in and struggled
through two games before missing the Kentucky game with
a stiff back.

Third-string quarterback Spencer Pennington turned in an
admirable effort, according to offensive coordinator
Dave Rader, in the blowout victory over Kentucky.

But where is Earl Morrall when you really need him?

Morrall, now retired and living in Naples, Fla., was
Shula's backup quarterback with the Baltimore Colts in
1968. But he became the starter when Johnny Unitas went
down with an elbow injury in the final game of the
preseason.

That injury, in fact, caused nerve damage in Unitas' arm
and was once the subject of a cover story in Sports
Illustrated.

With Morrall at quarterback, the Colts went 13-1 and
marched into Super Bowl III as the NFL champions and the
overwhelming favorites to whip the AFL's New York Jets.
Of course, no one remembers Super Bowl III for Morrall.

That was another quarterback. The New York Jets' Joe
Namath - ironically, a former Alabama quarterback -
guaranteed a victory and then led a 16-7 win over the
Colts.

Morrall would get his Super Bowl ring with the Colts in
the 16-13 win over Dallas in Super Bowl V, again
stepping in when Unitas was forced from the game with
bruised ribs. But by then, Shula had already moved on to
coach the Miami Dolphins.

After that game, though, Shula engineered Morrall's
arrival in Miami.

He was a veteran quarterback who had been around and
played a lot, Shula said. He was brought in just for
that reason - as insurance. When I got to Miami and he
became available, I said to my owner that I wanted to
bring him in.

Yes, Shula wanted him, but Dolphins owner Joe Robbie
didn't. As Shula remembered more than 30 years later,
this is the conversation they had:

Why? You've got Bob Griese? Robbie said.

Just as insurance, Shula replied.

What's he making?

Well, he's making a lot of money - $90,000.

$90,000 for a backup?

Indeed, that insurance policy became a sweet safety net
for the Dolphins when Griese broke his ankle in the
fifth game of the 1972 season.

And Shula and Morrall were united again.

In NFL history, 1972 stands alone without explanation -
an acronym of sorts for perfection. Each season, until
all 32 teams lose a game, the '72 Dolphins are the
inevitable standard of comparison until their 17-0
record remains unmatched and largely unchallenged for
still another year.

Perfection, achieved with a backup quarterback.

Morrall completed 83-of-150 passes that season for 1,360
yards and 11 touchdowns - laughably modest numbers in
today's pass-happy game. But Morrall was named the AFC's
Player of the Year by The Sporting News.

Morrall wasn't a part of the ultimate win that season -
the 14-7 victory over Washington in Super Bowl VI -
because Shula chose to go back to a recovered Griese.
Morrall, according to a 2002 story in the Boston Globe,
was disappointed but understanding.

So is there a moral in this story for Mike Shula?

You've got to have them for a while and make sure that
you train them properly, his father said. And you've
got to give them some reps in practice.

That's the advantage father had over son. Morrall had
been in the NFL for 12 years before replacing Unitas in
1968. And in the undefeated season with the Dolphins,
Morrall was 38 years old.

That hardly compares to Guillon and Pennington, who had
one career start between them coming into this season.
And in that start, Pennington was forced from the game
in the third quarter with a separated shoulder.

There's no magic things I can tell him, Shula said.
I'll watch a game and we'll talk and go over
situations. Nobody knows me better than Mike and nobody
knows Mike better than me.

He's paying for sins of the past. When he gets his
fulfillment of scholarships and gets them coached,
that's when Mike should be judged.

It's the plight of a coach, to be defined by your
surroundings - be it the plays your players make or the
NCAA sanctions that came

be 2 more sets of condos then further back, there
will be 2 more sets of
condos with courtyards complete with pools, water
fountains water falls
lots lots of retail shops. I haven't been to PC in
quite a while, but
it's amazing to me that there's that much space
available. They must have
cleared out a bunch of shit. Phase One will be the
courtyard condos which
are labeled residential. I'm assuming these won't be
for tourists.

fragments from the tibia lodged in cartilage behind the

The Joe Kines defense doesn't defend the QB, so we
need all the help we can
 get.

Southern Miss QB out; Guillon could not start today

 From combined reports
 October 09, 2004

HATTIESBURG, Miss. | Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower
said Friday that Dustin
Almond, the Golden Eagles' starting quarterback, will
not play next Saturday
 at Alabama.

Almond, a junior from Orange Park, Fla., suffered a
hamstring injury in the
final seconds of regulation Thursday night on an
18-yard touchdown run that
put Southern Miss' game against Houston into overtime.
Backup Damion Carter
replaced Almond and led the Golden Eagles to a 35-29
overtime victory.

Bower said that Almond's hamstring is strained, not
torn, but that he would
be out from two to three weeks. He ruled out any
chance of the quarterback
returning in time to play against the Crimson Tide
next weekend at
Bryant-Denny Stadium, moving Carter into the starting
position.

I don't know how long he'll be out, Bower said.
That's an individual
thing. Some guys get better quicker than others. It
depends on how he
 responds.

Southern Miss improved to 4-0 for the first time since
1981 with the win
over Houston. The victory was the 500th in the history
of the USM program.

From Tighter Inside Her:

It ended up a pretty good practice. Marc [Guillon's]
back tightened up a little bit, so Spencer got a few
more reps. It [Guillon's back] was a little tight and we
didn't want to make it worse at this point. We'll see
how it is tomorrow. It was good for Spencer to get all
those reps. But we still anticipate Marc being the guy
[starter]. Keith Brown did not practice, so he probably
won't play. Simeon Castille, we still feel like he'll
play. A.J. Milwee and Adam Thrash will both make the
trip.
