[RollTideFan] Bama Fan

2005-08-13 Thread 1tide1
A good little Auburn story.
An Auburn University family of football supporters head out one
Saturday to do their Christmas shopping. While in the sports shop the
son picks up an Alabama jersey and says to his older sister, I've
decided to become an Alabama fan and I would like this for Christmas.
His big sister is outraged by this and promptly whacks him round the
head and says, Go talk to mother.
Off goes the little lad with the Alabama jersey in hand and finds his
mother. Mom?
Yes son?
I've decided I'm going to be an Alabama fan and I would like this
jersey for Christmas.
The mother is outraged at this, promptly whacks him around the head and
says, Go talk to your father!
Off he goes with the Alabama Jersey in hand and finds his father. Dad?
Yes son?
I've decided I'm going to be an Alabama fan and I would like this
jersey for Christmas.
The father is outraged and promptly whacks his son around the head and
says, No son of mine is ever going to be seen in THAT!
About half an hour later they're all back in the car and heading towards
home. The father turns to his son and says Son, I hope you've learned
something today?
The son says, Yes, Dad, I have.
Good son, what is it?

The son replies, I've only been an Alabama fan for an hour and I already
hate you Auburn bastards.

[RollTideFan] BAMA to play Notre Dame!

2005-05-19 Thread kurtrasmussen
  well... kinda.

Notre Dame, N.C. State on Tide schedule
Thursday, May 19, 2005
STEVE KIRK
News staff writer
TUSCALOOSA - The Notre Dame and North Carolina State men's basketball teams
have agreed to play the University of Alabama at the Crimson Tide's remodeled
Coleman Coliseum this season.

Also coming to Tuscaloosa is a first-round game in the Preseason NIT, where on
Nov. 15 Alabama will play host to Miami of Ohio.

Add in a game at Big 12 powerhouse Oklahoma and potential later-round NIT games
against Duke, Missouri, UCLA, Memphis or Seton Hall, and it's no wonder Mark
Gottfried said Wednesday that his team will be playing one of the toughest
schedules in the country.

Only the NIT game has been announced. Other contracts are in the mail, and it
could be several weeks before Alabama releases its 2005-06 schedule.

First-round Preseason NIT games will be played over two days. Games on Nov. 14
include Manhattan at Seton Hall, Sam Houston State at Missouri, Drexel at
Princeton, and Boston University at Duke. Games on Nov. 15 include
Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Memphis, Miami of Ohio at Alabama, Army at Temple, and
New Mexico State at UCLA. The semifinals and finals are held at Madison Square
Garden in New York.

[RollTideFan] BAMA Baseball Tonight

2005-02-10 Thread Pat Smoot
New catcher SS. Should be a pretty good team if they've learned how to
hit. ROLL DAMN TIDE !!

Bama Arrives in Honolulu; Season Opener on Thursday
Wednesday, February 09, 2005
HONOLULU, HI -- The University of Alabama baseball team opens its 112th
season with a four-game series against the University of Hawai'i here in
Honolulu beginning Thursday, Feb. 10 at 10:35 p.m. (CT) from Les Murakami
Stadium on the island of Ohau. The teams will also play Friday, Feb. 11 and
Saturday, Feb. 12 at 10:35 p.m. (CT), while the series finale is set for
Sunday, Feb. 13 at 5:05 p.m. (CT). The four-game series at Hawai'i marks
Alabama's first-trip to islands since 1957.

Coach Tilden Happy Campbell's 1957 SEC Western Division championship team
posted a 15-5 record on its 20-game tour from June 25-August 7, 1957. The
1957 Goodwill Far East Tour included stops in Tokyo (Japan), Okinawa
(Japan), Korea and Honolulu. At the time of Alabama's last visit to the
islands, Hawaii was not yet a state. Hawaii did not become the 50th state
until August 21, 1959. The Alabama football team and men's and women's
basketball teams have also played in Honolulu. The football team is 2-1 in
the Aloha state, winning the 1985 Aloha Bowl (UA 24, Southern Cal 3) and
splitting a two-game series with the Warriors in 2002 (UA , 21-16) and 2003
(UH, 37-29). Bama and UH are expected to open the 2006 football season in
Tuscaloosa on Sept. 2, 2006, which will be the first game in the newly
expanded Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The team arrived at 5 p.m. (HT) on Tuesday following a 13-hour travel day,
that included a nine-hour, non-stop flight from Atlanta to Honolulu.

We are excited about being in Hawai'i, Alabama head coach Jim Wells said.
We are also excited about starting another season. This year is a little
different because of the long trip, but it will be good to finally play
against outside competition.

Hawai'i has a pretty good team. They beat Rice (won two of three in May)
last year here in Honolulu and they had good crowds, even one sellout.
Hawai'i has two good pitchers (Ricky Bauer and Steven Bryant) and a lot of
guys back (six returning starters) off last year's team. This will be a
good series for us against an NCAA Regional-type team.

Alabama finished 29-26 last year and has most everybody back off a team that
finished a disappointing 11th in the Southeastern Conference.

After three weeks of preseason practice, which included eight intrasquad
games, Wells says his team is much improved this season, and hopefully will
be more productive. Alabama's opening day lineup will include seven
returning players and two newcomers. Sophomore Emeel Salem will be the Tide's
leadoff hitter and play center field. Senior Allen Rice will play second
base, while junior transfer Kody Valverde will catch and bat third in the
order. Junior third baseman Evan Bush, senior designated hitter Gabe Scott
and senior first baseman Zac Welch will hit in the middle of the lineup.
Sophomore Michael McCallister will be in right field, senior Matt Grooms
will play left field and true freshman Cale Iorg will play shortstop for the
Crimson Tide.

The pitching rotation for the Hawai'i series will include three veteran
left-handers and one right hander. Sophomore Wade LeBlanc (2004 National
Freshman of the Year) will get the nod on opening day for the Crimson Tide.
Sophomore Brandon Belcher will pitch game two of the series, followed by
senior Brent Carter and junior T.J. Large in the final two games of the
four-game set.

While winning four games is the ultimate goal of this seven-day trip, Wells
said he wants his team to see the island and have some down time while in
Honolulu.

We are going to Pearl Harbor and to see some other sights here on the
island, Wells said. We will let the guys see Hawai'i on Wednesday and
Monday (Feb. 14), with the other four days focused totally on playing and
winning the games.

Alabama has won a school record 11 consecutive season openers, dating back
to the 1994 season. The four-game road trip to Hawai'i marks the first time
since 1999 that Alabama has opened the season in an opponents home ballpark.
Alabama opened the 2003 season at the Minute Maid Park College Classic in
Houston against UL Lafayette, Houston and Rice. The 2005 opener is the
fourth time Alabama has not began the season at home under Wells.

[RollTideFan] Bama gets its main man!

2005-01-31 Thread Jeff Todd

Roy Upchurch has made his decision.

At a press conference this morning at Godby HS in
Tallahassee, the 6-0, 195-pound Upchurch made an
announcement that Alabama fans have been waiting a long
time to hear. The Parade All-America running back picked
the Crimson Tide over Florida State and Arkansas.

The Alabama coaches laid it all out there, Godby head
coach Shelton Crews said on Monday morning. Coach [Bob]
Connelly did a great job of recruiting Roy. They
developed a close relationship. And the two visits Coach
[Mike] Shula made down here really helped.

Upchurch is the fourth running back to commit to Alabama
in this year's class. He joins Ali Sharrief (5-10, 188,
4.5) of North Jackson, Glen Coffee (6-0, 205, 4.45) of
Fort Walton Beach, FL and Mike Ford (6-2, 205, 4.4) of
Sarasota, FL.

All along Alabama just made Roy feel like they really
wanted him, Crews said. They told him from the very
start and all the way through that he was the top guy on
their board.

Another factor in Upchurch's decision was the Tide's
running game.

He knows Alabama is committed to running the football,
Crews said. Alabama uses the run to set up the pass.
Florida State is just the opposite.

After an injury-plagued junior season, Upchurch emerged
as one of the nation's premier running backs this year.
As a senior he rushed for 2,543 yards and 27 touchdowns
and was named Parade All-American.

On Sunday night, a coach at a rival school in
Tallahassee told TI that Upchurch had all he tools to
become a star at Alabama.

I watched a lot of film of guys like Cedric Benson and
Carnell Williams when they were in high school, and Roy
Upchurch is one of those types of backs, the coach
said. He's got speed [4.4] and he'll run over people.
With some maturity, he could be a great one.

Upchurch is the 31st prospect to commit to the Crimson
Tide. Prospects will sign their national letters of
intent on national signing day this Wednesday.

[RollTideFan] Bama vs MSU... bounceyball

2005-01-22 Thread kurtrasmussen
http://www.bamabasketball.net/Guest/articles/1212005-2017.asp
Walter Sharpe was not the start of the recruiting wars with State...
by Bill Ellis
Friday, January 21, 2005
The other day someone in New York called me from a newspaper and asked
if I wanted to collaborate with him on article about the MSU's
recruitment of Walter Sharpe. I told him that I appreciated the offer
but I'd been in the briar patch before and found it to be pretty
painful. I had to explain to him what that meant.

The hatred that exists (and I think that is a fair description) between
State and Alabama goes back further than Mario Austin. Austin as you
recalled made a verbal commitment to Alabama and then switched to State.
A lot of people yelled foul. I wasn't one of them. I kept telling people
that Austin didn't want to play college ball with Gerald Wallace because
he felt he had been second violin to him long enough. I caught heck for
saying that but it is true. That change in schools accelerated an
already bad situation between the two schools, but the real story began
with Antonio McDyess. Big Mac signed with Bama and that is where both he
and his family wanted him to attend.

Rumors ran wild in Mississippi about how Alabama was buying McDyess. Not
true. The exact opposite occurred. A friend of the McDyess family told
me that if I wanted to know who was offering money I should go to
Meridian and Laurel, Mississippi and talk to a couple of automobile
dealers. Supposedly one offered money and the other offered the wheels.
I asked each of the two men in question to comment. Both asked me rather
impolitely to leave their showrooms. I would have done the same thing. I
knew neither would answer me but I wanted to see how they would react.

Admittedly, their refusal to talk with me isn't proof of anything, but I
was at least expecting a denial or some similar statement. I have my own
belief as to whether their involvement was actual or not. The McDyess
affair was the start of hardcore hatred between the two schools. State
has always had an inferiority complex with Ole Miss. They generally had
the upper hand in basketball over Ole Miss and that was based on their
ability to get the best in state players. Losing a McDyess to an out of
state school was going to set bad precedent. The Bulldogs might suddenly
be even if Ole Miss started recruiting the best players or the best
players left the State. The reported price to keep McDyess in State was
reported at over six figures and the first number wasn't one.

That is not saying that any of that was true. It also doesn't mean that
Ms. State was involved. None of that matters any longer. To Bama and
State fans the affair has been engraved in stone. The younger fans think
this started with Austin, but it didn't. In fact, I think a lot of it
really began with Mike Nordholz.

Mo William's recruitment just put more hot sauce on the salsa. The truth
of the matter with Mo is that Bama been actively recruiting him hard
and often since he was a ninth grader. I went to Jackson with some Bama
people to watch the best high school player I've ever seen play a junior
high school game. State and Ole Miss fans hated it. To Ole Miss's credit
they down played the entire affair. State cried like a true sinner at
the inquisition. State intentionally fanned the flames knowing they
never had a legitimate shot at Mo. It only served to make a bad
situation even worse.

But the capper is Walter Sharpe. Here is a young man who was actively
recruited by Georgia, UAB, and Bama for three years. In fairness to
State they were in on him hard in his junior year, but dropped off the
radar when Lawrence Roberts mysteriously decided to transfer to State
after turning down Kansas, UNC, and (reportedly) UCLA. He could have
gone anywhere with the NCAA's blessing and he chose Mississippi State. I
guess he thought the nightlife was better.

Sharpe hadn't been contacted in any manner since Sharpe's junior season.
State was upfront with Walt and told him they were going with an
All-American. Most people thought he was Bama's to lose as they say, and
I think that is right. UAB was a strong runner-up and had a real shot.
His mom wanted him to stay in the City.

Two days before the first day of the signing period Sharpe told the
world he was considering Mississippi State. Keep in mind he had never
set foot on campus at State, he had not had a single State coach contact
him, or had even talked with Rick Stansbury.

Stansbury called him on the telephone at the 11th hour and asked him to
consider State after all. His high school coach was pushing him to
State. You draw your own conclusions as to why. I have my beliefs based
upon conversations with some teachers and other players as Parker. These
rumors had been swirling around the recruiting people for about two
weeks. Several people had contacted Alabama, UAB, and Georgia to warn
them that Sharpe was being led West so to speak.

Big weekend for Bama recruiting
Tide schedules biggest rush of prospects to visit campus beginning today
Friday, January 07, 2005
By THOMAS MURPHY
Sports Reporter
http://www.al.com/alabama/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/sports/110509317865620.xml
If college football recruiting were a baseball game, the University of
Alabama's pre-Christmas efforts would be like a seven-inning quality start.

The Crimson Tide has a de cent hold on 24 commitments, but it would like
to finish with a flourish by knocking out the last handful of top
prospects on its board.

That's where this weekend comes into play.
Starting this evening, the Alabama program will play host to 16 or so
prospects, treating them to tours of its new football facility, Bryant
Hall, Bryant-Denny Stadium and taking the group to Saturday's basketball
game against LSU.

Obviously, it's a big weekend for us, Tide coach Mike Shula said.
This will be the biggest weekend we'll have by far all year.

There is only a trickle of prospects scheduled to come in on the final
few weekends before National Signing Day on Feb. 2.

There's a small chance we could be finished if things go well (this
weekend), Shula said.

A wide spectrum of players are slated to attend, but Davidson High
School tight end Gabe McKenzie, the state's No. 1 player on the Mobile
Register's Elite 18, was wavering Thursday on his scheduled visit.
Alabama assistant coach Buddy Wyatt visited McKenzie Thursday to try to
convince him to follow through with the visit.

Among the other visitors expected are Williamson defensive end Antonio
Coleman (who was visited Thursday by new LSU head coach Les Miles),
blue-chip defensive backs such as Chris Keys and Chris Rogers,
prime-time receivers Fred Rouse and Julius McClellan, top defensive
linemen Bobby Greenwood and Doug Worthington, and a quartet of standout
running backs.

McKenzie, who has Auburn and Miami (Fla.) as his leaders, looks like a
long shot for the Tide, while Coleman has narrowed his choices to Bama,
Auburn, LSU and Southern Miss.

Keys has committed to Alabama, but he was an LSU pledge until Nick
Saban's departure on Christmas Day and there may be twists remaining in
his recruitment. Rogers, of Lakeland, Fla., has been a Maryland
commitment, but some feel he has swung toward the Crimson Tide. Rogers
told Tider Insider he will make his official announcement at Evangel
Christian School in Lakeland next Tuesday.

Rouse, the top-rated receiver in the country by Rivals.com out of
Tallahassee, Fla., appears a possibility, however remote, but Tide fans
are holding out hope he'll surprise by choosing Alabama over Florida
State, Texas and others. McClellan, an intriguing 6-4, 220-pounder with
4.4 speed, is rated the No. 5 junior college product nationally out of
Coahoma (Miss.) College.

Greenwood, who is still considering Alabama and Florida State over
Auburn and Vanderbilt, will probably get a strong sales job from fellow
Prattville products Kyle Tatum and Roman Harper this weekend.
Worthington, a 6-7, 255-pounder out of Althol Springs, N.Y., is
committed to Ohio State but is keeping his options open as the Buckeyes
enter murky NCAA waters with allegations of recruiting violations.
Worthington is also slated to visit Florida, and is also considering
Wisconsin, Boston College and Notre Dame.

While Alabama can still take the best available athletes to fill most of
its final six or so slots, another running back and a defensive lineman
or two are key targets.

We're still (recruiting) at every position, but defensive line and
running backs for sure are two positions we're looking at, Shula said.

A handful of running backs -- led by Roy Upchurch of Tallahassee (Fla.)
Godby, Mike Davis of Columbia, S.C., Mike Ford of Sarasota, Fla., and
Tide commitment Ali Sharrief of Stevenson -- are set to visit today.

On the defensive front, ends Greenwood and Worthington are scheduled to
be joined by Brandon Deaderick, an end out of Elizabethtown, Ky., and
tackle Antonio Forbes of the Atlanta suburb of Norcross. Cordero Moore
of Mequite, Texas, who had a family connection to the Crimson Tide, was
scheduled to visit but canceled after committing to Oklahoma.

McKenzie is not the only tight end on the weekend's guest list, as Colin
Peek of The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., is expected to attend.

Keys and Rogers lead a big group of defensive backs slated to visit,
including Guesly Dervil of Jacksonville, Fla., and Anthony Johnson of
Jackson, Miss.

Alabama is also slated to welcome linebacker Antonio Clay of
Jacksonville, Ga., who has narrowed his choices to Miami and Alabama, as
well as quarterback Jimmy Johns of Brookhaven, Miss. Clay's visit,
somewhat of a surprise, has been credited to Tide receivers coach
Charlie Harbison's efforts.

In other Alabama football news, Shula said the Crimson Tide will have to
learn from its apparent faux pas in failing to bring grayshirts John
Parker Wilson and

2004-12-29 Thread Rick Mc.
The Tide lost in Madison, Wisconsin tonight, dropping their record to
10-2. Wisconsin has won 36 games in a row on their home court.
Here's the write-up:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=243640275
Alabama 62
Wisconsin 76
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Alando Tucker scored 21 points and Wisconsin
stifled No. 18 Alabama's high-powered offense in a 76-62 victory
Wednesday night that extended the nation's longest home winning streak
to 36 games.

The Badgers (9-2) took a 33-23 halftime lead behind the Big Ten's best
defense. Alabama, the Southeastern Conference's leading offense at
better than 86 points per game, scored on seven straight possessions to
start the second half, cutting the lead 42-37. But the Crimson Tide
(10-2) went scoreless for almost 3 minutes after Ronald Steele's basket
cut the lead to 54-46 with 6:18 left.

Tucker's 3-pointer gave the Badgers a 65-48 lead, their biggest of the
game, and Wisconsin cruised from there.

The Badgers haven't lost at Kohl Center since Dec. 4, 2002, when Wake
Forest beat them 90-80.

Alabama came in shooting almost 50 percent from the field but the
Crimson Tide made less than one-third of their shots in the first half.

Chuck Davis made two of his first eight shots, but scored 10 points in
the Crimson's Tide's run to open the second half and then cooled off the
rest of the way. He finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, while
Kennedy Winston also had 18 points for the Crimson Tide.

Wisconsin never trailed as Mike Wilkinson hit his first three shots to
open a 7-0 lead. He finished with 15 points while Zach Morley had 13
points and seven rebounds. Tucker also had seven rebounds.

As a follower of Alabama recruiting for 30 years,
I can't remember a year since the SEC letter-of-intent
was abolished in the early 1980s in which the Crimson
Tide had as many frontline prospects committed before
Christmas as it does this year. And the Tide still has
several top uncommitted prospects that might jump on
board by early New Year.
Alabama currently has 22 commitments. Given that
at least two or three of those will greyshirt next fall,
it's likely that Alabama will sign 28 or 29 in this
class. That would leave six or seven scholarship slots
open. And in the event the class fills up, the Tide
staff has a plan to accommodate a top prospect or two
who might decide for Bama late in the process.
Ideally, Bama would like to finish with another
running back, a tight end, two defensive linemen, a
safety/linebacker and a defensive back. There are
several prospects that could fill those spots.
Based on the information available now, let's take
a look at those prospects most likely to complete the
2005 signing class.
  Running back
At running back, there is little doubt about who
is at the top of Bama's board. With an outstanding
senior year, Tallahassee-Godby star Roy Upchurch (6-0,
193, 4.4) bolted to front of the wish list. Upchurch
scored 27 touchdowns and finished second in the state of
Florida with over 2,500 yards rushing.
Alabama has been high on the list of such talented
backs as Mikell Simpson of Harrisburg, PA and Mike Davis
of Columbia, SC. But what separates Upchurch from the
others is that he's probably the better all around back.
He does everything the Tide staff wants in a back -- he
runs with speed, elusiveness and power, he blocks and
catches, and he returns kicks.
As TI has reported for months, Upchurch's mother
is a close friend to the mother of former Tide running
back Ray Hudson. That might help.
Another thing working in Bama's favor is its
offense. Upchurch likes the way the Tide features its
tailback.
For several weeks, sources close to the Godby
program have indicated that Upchurch would pick Alabama
over FSU. According to sources, Upchurch will make an
unofficial visit to FSU on January 28. His decision
might be made before that visit takes place. Unless
something changes, look for Bama to get its man.
The Crystal Ball says: Roy Upchurch
  Wide receiver/tight end
Besides running back, Bama's other priorities on
offense down the stretch are a top tight end and a top
wide receiver.
The Tide is still in the mix for
Montgomery-Trinity Presbyterian tight end Tommy Trott
(6-5, 240). While Trott says Auburn is his current
leader, Trott told TI on Wednesday night that he was
still torn between Alabama and Auburn.
Bama is also looking at other tight end prospects,
including Collin Peek (6-6, 250) of Jacksonville-Bolles,
FL.
Bama has a great shot at landing
Milledgeville-Baldwin, GA star receiver Nick Kyles. Over
the past two seasons the 6-2½, 189-pound Kyles caught
over 100 passes for more than 2,000 yards. He favors
Alabama over offers from Auburn, Georgia, Florida and
Clemson. While Bama is still in the running for
Tallahassee-Lincoln blue chipper Fred Rouse, chances are
much more likely that the Tide would end up with Kyles.
The Crystal Ball says: Nick Kyles
  Defensive line
On the defensive side, Bama is still in good shape
with at least four line prospects.
  Prattville's Bobby Greenwood (6-6, 240) will
probably choose Alabama or FSU. At the moment, TI
believes Alabama will win out for Greenwood.
As of Wednesday night, Athens star Wes Brown was
clearly struggling with his decision between Alabama and
Tennessee. Back in the summer, Brown committed to
Tennessee. But since that time he's had second thoughts.
He has visited Alabama and Tennessee. Although he comes
from a family of Tennessee fans, he apparently favors
Alabama. Sources close to the matter tell TI that Brown
would like to make a decision before Christmas.
As TI has reported for several months, Bama is a
legitimate contender for Mesquite, TX star defensive end
Cordero Moore (6-4, 265). Moore has narrowed his list to
Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Arkansas. Moore's
father, Rod Moore, told TI that he and his wife favored
Alabama as the school for their son. Moore will make his
official visit to Bama on January 7.
Another top out-of-state defensive lineman on
Bama's list is Brandon Deaderick (6-4, 235) of
Elizabethtown, KY. Deaderick has listed Bama among his
top three, along with Louisville and Auburn. Michigan
State is also making a late push.

ALABAMA FOOTBALL FANS SHOULD BE CAREFUL!

The University of Alabama is considering a speech code which would contain
the following provision:

University officials in charge of student programming must develop clear
policies restricting any behavior that demeans or reduces an individual
based on group affiliation or personal traits, or which promotes hate or
discrimination, in any approved University program or activity. These
policies must be incorporated into any contract entered into by the
university regarding participation in formal University programs or
activities.

A football game is a University activity is it not? An Auburn football
player has a group affiliation, does he not? Does this mean that a clear
policy must be developed by University officials restricting any behavior at
a football game that might in any way reduce or demean a member of the
opposing team?

If it makes you feel any better, the broadcast really
sucked! I hate those low-budget productions. I swear
ESPN2 only had two cameras and one cameraman. Most of
the broadcast was from what appeared to be ONE FREAKING
remote control operated camera about 300 feet from the
court. Most of the time you couldn't even see the
numbers on the players jerseys. There were many times
the only way I'd know if a basket was good was if the
scoreboard in the upper right hand corner of the screen
changed.

2004-11-04 Thread Rick Mc.
Bama must adjust offensive schemes
By Tim Gayle
Montgomery Advertiser
http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/NEWSV5/storyV5bamafoo4o.htm
TUSCALOOSA -- Two of Alabama's top three receivers are now standing on
the sideline, nursing season-ending knee injuries.

They happen to be running backs as well, an indication of their
versatility and what their loss means to Alabama.

Former starting tailback Ray Hudson, the second-leading rusher in the
Southeastern Conference, was joined on the injured list two weeks ago by
Tim Castille, the starting fullback. So not only did Alabama lose two of
its top playmakers, it also lost it's big-back look that featured
Castille and backup fullback Le'Ron McClain.

But Alabama players insist there will be no dropoff in production.
You really don't lose anything, starting tailback Kenneth Darby said.
I'm going to have to do more of what they were doing. I'm going to have
to catch the ball more out of the backfield and be in there for the
big-back set. The roles are just changing. They're not taking anything
out. They're going to keep everything the same.

It's hard to argue with success.
Alabama's offense is the leading rushing attack in the Southeastern
Conference. But it's almost impossible to expect the Crimson Tide to
have the same success without Castille, who stepped into the role
vacated by Hudson as a quality receiver out of the backfield and also
split time between tailback and fullback.

I think our offense will look similar, running backs coach Sparky
Woods said. You fit it to your personnel. We lost two great players in
Tim Castille, a halfback and a fullback, so we have to make some
adjustments. The biggest part of it is the younger guys have to step up
and play that role. We can't just change offenses.

Alabama head coach Mike Shula suggested the role can be filled by using
McClain as a fullback and in a single-back offensive alignment, and that
tight ends can fill the role of blockers in some passing situations.

Le'Ron has really improved since last year with his blocking, with his
catching, and he's in much better shape, Shula said, and he
understands what we're doing a lot more than he ever did at any point
before.

(Tight ends) Clint Johnston and David Cavan, we've used them this year
at times with a single back. We could possibly do some of that.

The logical choice would be Johnston, the most versatile of the tight
ends, but the junior from Wetumpka has been limited in practice this
week with a concussion.

I still don't know if I'll play, he said after Wednesday's practice.
They said it needs time.

Offensive coordinator Dave Rader said practice this week has focused on
Castille's backups, McClain and Josh Smith.

So far, they've responded with a resounding affirmation, he said.
They're two tough young men, strong-minded and smart. We have every bit
of confidence that they'll be able to fulfill the role.

We, for sure, don't have the big backfield. That's a big change for us.
That burden will go on 'KD' (Darby). He's got to be a big back now.
That's an immediate change we'll see. Other than that, we've all been
running the same plays most of the fall and spring and throughout
preseason camp. You're going to have more reps now, but they're going to
be the same plays.

McClain, the 244-pound sophomore who went from being an all-state
tailback at Tuscaloosa County High to a seldom-used fullback at Alabama,
likes the idea of being featured in a one-back offense.

I would be real comfortable, McClain said. Every day, before we come
out to practice, I'm working on my one-back set with my stance and
everything. If my opportunity comes, I'm going to take it.

It's doubtful the Crimson Tide offense can line up and run the ball the
way it has through the first eight games of the season. Quarterback
Spencer Pennington, who has struggled since moving up from third team a
month ago because of injuries, will have to improve his accuracy.

He picks things up quicker, Shula said. That's probably the biggest
thing as far as when you're talking to him about certain things and
certain reads and progressions. His awareness of blitzes, things like
that, are all things that he's progressed with. In practice his accuracy
is improved. We've missed some throws that we felt like if we would have
made them we would have had taken advantage of some opportunities, and
that's where we have to get better.

Pennington predicted Alabama's offense will continue to maintain its
level of success without Castille.

We're definitely going to miss Tim and we've missed Ray, he said. But
Le'Ron can run out of the backfield, he can make catches and he can run
after the catch. We're very excited to have him step in there and fill
that position. I don't feel we're going to lose that factor of our
offense, but I really don't know. We haven't played a game without Tim.
I guess we'll have to see this Saturday what goes on.

Sloppy work: Shula said he

As I've told you before Mike, they are not allowed to sit at the cool kids table, so
no...they didn't show up.

We had a nice pre-game tailgate, got to see friends we haven't seen since last year
and made some new ones. The Smoot crew stopped by for a little while and stirred
things up a bit.

Ron (Velvet Leggs) was in rare form Saturday. It doesn't take much to talk him into
'bustin-a-move.' He performed for anyone who would watch.

As for Mrs. Smoot's comment regarding my newly acquired vehicle...I have no
contractual obligation to Mr. Rice for sexual favors in lieu of said vehicle purchase.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
