I also found out that if I reboot the WinXP PC machine or the samba

nbtstat -A (IP of linuxbox) at WinXP PC and nmblookup -A ( IP of WinXP)
to be able to connect the

Re: [Samba] Mounting Share at Boot

I've got the following in my /etc/fstab file

//abinidi/common/abinidi/common smbfs
uid=500,gid=500,credentials=/etc/smbmount_passwd 0 0

//abinidi/homes /abinidi/home   smbfs

//abinidi/networking/abinidi/networking smbfs
uid=500,gid=500,credentials=/etc/smbmount_passwd,rw 0 0
/d

500 is my user id
/etc.smbmount_passwd is a root rw file with the following
content
username = steves
password = x

Of course /abinidi/... are local directories

Hope that helps

I have a W2K laptop that when it tries to connect I get the above error.
In network neighborhood I can see my linux machine but I cannot see any

When I check using swat the area for active shares is empty...what can I
do to solve this problem?

[Samba] Problem with Samba 2.2.5: a lot of smbd processes are generated

2002-09-30 Thread Gross Johannes-Ludwig
Title: Problem with Samba 2.2.5: a lot of smbd processes are generated

Hello,

I use Samba 2.2.5 on a SUN V880 Computer with Solaris 8, installed as a new system about two weeks ago. Before that, samba 2.2.3 was used on an Ultra 450 under Solaris 7 for many weeks without problem. The usage of the samba service has increased a lot since the change to the new system, because some applications were changed to start from the exported file systems.

Sometimes (about two to three times a week) the samba service runs wild: old connections are still working, but new connections don't and a lot of smbd processes are started. The log file only shows the starting of the processes, no error messages. If I change the samba definition in /etc/inetd.conf to contain -d 9, I get a lot of output, but I can't find the information to cure the problem.

Can you give me some hints how to find the source of the problem or how to solve it ? Are there special patches that should be installed on an V880 ( I installed Solaris 8, 2/02 and then applied the recommended patch cluster from the Sun web page) ?

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / kind regards

If you are starting the daemons with inetd, they won't run as

[Samba] smbd, nmbd crashes

2002-09-30 Thread murray zangen

Hi,

I've been running Samba successfully for several years.

I tried running Samba on a new computer under Redhat 7.3 using a test
smb.conf where testparm shows no errors. Running "smb start" runs
properly i.e. starts smbd and nmbd, but after a few seconds both
programs stop running (running "ps aux| grep smbd" shows job running,
running "ps" again shows that it stopped. Running "smb status"
twice after staring smb confirms that they ran for a few seconds and
then stopped.

All necessary changes were made to /etc/services and inetd.conf.

Any ideas?

Thanks

As I better explained on a second post, this behaviour doesn't happen
when the same "problematic" Windows
programs are writing to a samba share which is a *real* linux directory
(i.e., it's not a samba share that is in turn
smbmounted back to a windows share)
So, in sum:
[Windows]>[ [samba]>[linux filesystem] ] works OK
[linux]>[smbmount]>[ [windows cifs]>[Windows filesystem] ]
 works OK

[Windows]>[ [samba]>[smbmount] ]>[ [windows
cifs]>[Windows filesystem] ] DOESN'T ALWAYS

see the strange behaviour?
I'm puzzled I didn't get more replies on this subject, is there another
better list to ask about this?
A samba developer's list maybe?

thanks Karen

Tried that. As expected, windows talking to windows behaves normally.
And as I said, windows talking to samba works normally.
linux talking to smbmount (with a windows target) works normally
windows talking to samba talking to [linux talking to] smbmount (with a windows
target).. that's the ugly beast!

The few replies I'v gotten make me think that
a) I'm not explaining the problem correctly
b) Nobody has a clue
c) Nobody cares

Anyone else has ideas???

[Samba] ENABLING QUOTAS

2002-09-30 Thread Servie Platon
Hi everyone,
Is there a way to enable and allocate quota manually on each user's home folder as per on a user to user basis?
For example:
User  Allocated Quota  path
rector  20 MB   /home/rectorprincipal 20 MB   /home/principal
teacher1 10 MB   /home/teacher1teacher2 10 MB   /home/teacher2
student1  5 MB   /home/student1student2  5 MB   /home/student2
If so, what is the syntax for this. Thanks in advance.

Do *NOT* do that. Passdb.tdb *must* not be world readable, prefereably
700.

You are using tdbsam_nua, and have not set up an non-unix account range
in your smb.conf. (See the smb.conf manpage). Or, set a 'add machine
account script' so that you have a 'real' unix account to add to tdbsam.

Jerry,
Yes I had the Admin useres set as well as the valid users. I had entered a
number of usernames in both. Should this make a difference? I deleted the
entries in admin users and then created a new file but the owner was still
set to root.!?!?

I still have the force user set to apache but it doesnt seem to work.

I hope you can help some more... thanks

Re: [Samba] W9x print driver download problems with Samba 2.2.3a and CUPS

2002-09-30 Thread Adam Glasgall

Curioser and curioser, running the exact same rpcclient command which
cupsaddsmb runs :
rpcclient localhost -N -U'root%' -c 'adddriver "Windows 4.0"
":ADOBEPS4.DRV:.PPD:NULL:ADOBEPS4.HLP:PSMON.DLL:RAW:ADFONTS.MFM,DEFPRTR2.PPD,ICONLIB.DLL"
results in:
result was NT_STATUS_INVALID_LOCK_SEQUENCE
with debuglevel 2. Going to debuglevel 3 doesn't increase verbosity to
any extent.
I'm thinking this is a serious bug in Samba 2.2.3a, I'm wondering why on
earth Samba 2.2.5 or at least 2.2.4 hasn't made it into Debian testing
(at least!) yet, and I'm trying 2.2.5 tomorrow.

Hard indeed. I'm running a small script that first lists all shares available
to an user (smbclient -L), and then uses smbclient again but to connect to each share
and run
"dir". I run this script once for each user I have (about 300). The load on
the ldap machine, a PII-300 128Mb soars to 32 and stays there.

Samba is running on another machine, while openldap 2.0.25 is
on this PII-300. Load on the samba machine is between 1.5 and 2.5 most of the time
during this test. (the samba machine is a celeron 500).

I recently upgraded from RedHat 6.2 to 7.3. I had samba running

I've looked through the various help files, FAQs, and mailing lists,
but can't seem to solve the problem. The smb.conf file is below.

One other thing I noticed has changed since the upgrade is if I do
'smbclient -L k466a'
I used to get a Domain=[KRANNERT] but now I get Domain=[MYGROUP].

[Samba] Printing problems with Samba 2.2.3a

2002-09-30 Thread Eric Keeley

Hi,

I've been using Samba 2.0.5 successfully for a long time and am now trying
to configure 2.2.3a under Debian GNU/Linux 3.0. I've succeeded with the
exception of one printer share. What makes this frustrating is that the
share is mostly functional, but I haven't been able to find my problem
described anywhere else.

We have two HP printers, a LaserJet 4000N and a LaserJet 5N, which I'd like
to share using the new SPOOLSS printer functionality. Following the
instructions in the Printing How-to, I was able to upload drivers for both
printers to the Samba server from an NT4 (SP6a) Workstation. Printing to
the 4000N now works flawlessly. My problems are with the 5N. When I try
to print a test page with "Print Test Page" button, NT4 WS (SP6a) responds
with

"Test page failed to print. Would you like to view the print trouble
shooter for assistance? The data area passed to a system call is too small."

Also, several of the settings on the "Device" tab are
unavailable. Strangely, I am able to print to this printer with my other
application programs with no apparent problem.

In an attempt to fix this problem, I uninstalled its driver according MS
Knowledge Base article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q135406&; and
deleted its driver files in print$/W32X86/2. When I subsequently attempted
to upload the driver, I received a copy error. Apparently, this is
because NT4 was attempting to copy the files to $print/W32X86 instead of
print$/W32X86/2.

Here are my questions:

1. Does anyone know what caused the original problem with the failed
printing of the test page and the unavailable options in the device tab?

2. What's the right way to remove printer drivers after they've been uploaded?

3. How does one give NT4 WS amnesia about a print driver? For example,
even after I deleted the files and registry settings for the HP5N as
specified in Q13506, its driver was still listed as an option on the
General tab. Are there other registry settings that need to be altered?

Here are the share definitions for print$ and the LaserJet 5N:

[print$]
path = /usr/local/windows/printers
read only = yes
write list = @respgms
browseable = no

[hp5n]
printer name = hp5npcl
printable = yes
printing = BSD
print command = /usr/bin/lpr -P%p %s
browseable = yes
path = /tmp

Thanks for any help,

Eric

sorry, I was wrong:

This is only needed, if you can use smbmount but not mount -t smbfs.

This is working for me:

linux 1.0 > smbmount //tb2/bbi /mountpoint -o username=tb,password=tb
linux 1.0 > mount
/dev/root on / type ext2 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
/dev/hda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
//tb2/bbi on /mountpoint type smbfs (0)

Then /usr/sbin is not in $PATH.

When I'm typing "set" on the console:

linux 1.0 > set
BASH=/bin/sh
[...]
PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin
[...]

/usr/sbin is in there.

Try

PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin
export PATH

Control this with

set

Re: [Samba] Win XP SP1 problem

2002-09-30 Thread Cameron Jenkins

Thats the problem, the PDC is not displaying any logs of any attempts of the
Win XP SP1 to try and join the domain.

Network connectivity is fine, I can also connect to shares via Windows
Explorer, I just cant join the domain.

Roaming profiles are set by XP as default rather than being controlled by
Samba, is this correct? I dont think the profile is the issue, as there
seems to be more like a XP issue than a Samba one.

i don't remember exactly but there is a setting
you need to change in the group policy editor to disable
checking for the SID in the profile... Unless the profiles are stored

Samba was installed by the Red Hat (7.2) installer when the system was
originally configured. Since I am not using a self-compiled version of
Samba, do I still need to do this? Should I try do see if it solves the

if you are using a selfcompiled version, you need a link to the correkt
location of smbmount in /sbin. I think, this is not documented yet but
I had the same problem and there was a tip in the mailing list...

Here is, what I do:

cd /sbin
ln -sf ../usr/bin/smbmount mount.smbfs

If smbmount is in /usr/bin...

Excellent. I didn't know the meaning of sticky bit on directories. Two
remarks (in case the kids try this at home). On my system (Linux) setting
the sticky bit is done using "chmod 1770 ..." and setting it (obviously)
doesn't prevent users from creating their own directories but that's
perfectly acceptable to me as long as the don't remove existing ones.

Thank you.

[Samba] winbind password replication?

2002-09-30 Thread Lewis Maggio

I have a question, and I could easily set up a test to
answer it for myself, but I was hoping someone would know offhand and save me
the trouble.

I have 2 office locations that are within a block of eachother,
and I have line of sight between them.  One office is running windows a nt4
server PDC with exchange 5.5 and operates as the file server.  This is
going to be switched VERY soon to a windows 2000 or .NET server with Exchange
2000 or Exchange .NET and I'm going to run a samba server with winbind as
the file server (I'll call this file server A).

At the other location, I have samba 2.2.5 set up as a PDC
and file server (I'll call this file server B).  Both of these
locations have DSL lines, and I'm going to set up a wireless network to
save $80 a month.  At 11mbps, I wouldn't want to run file server A over
wireless.  I would like to reconfigure file server B as a domain member
with winbind.  The authentication would take place over the wireless link.

Now if the wireless link goes down for some reason, I could
go to an XP box and log in, and it would use the last known good password for
the account.  My question is, if the wireless link goes down, would the winbind
server do the same thing?  In other words, if the PDC goes down, will the winbind
server still allow users to access their files with their last known good
account info and password?

This is an excellent idea. In investigating this, however, I have

[Samba] Winbind UID assignments - keeping a backup

2002-09-30 Thread Wieprecht, Karen M.

We use samba 2.2.5 in security=domain with winbind running. NT users who
don't have corresponding UNIX accounts are assigned a UID "on the fly" based
on the range specified in the smb.conf file.

Are there any recommendations for keeping that file backed up or synced up
with another system's samba files? We have a cluster where either of two
machine could serve our critical files in the event one went down. I would
like to keep this critical UID assignments file synced up (should I just use
rsync?). Since it's a .tdb file, not just a text file, I wasn't sure if
any host-specific stuff was written there that might become a problem if I
use a copy of the file on a different samba server.

Curious,

After upgrading from Samba PDC 2.2.3a-6 to Samba PDC
2.999+3.0cvs20020906-1 to fix a SNAP server problem, I am unable to join
a WinXP machine to the domain. I get the following error message in
Windows:

"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain
'yourdomain.com': Access is denied"

My log tells me the following:

[2002/09/30 12:54:26, 0] passdb/pdb_tdb.c:tdb_update_sam(789)

permissions?
[2002/09/30 13:01:18, 0] smbd/service.c:set_admin_user(309)
root logged in as admin user (root privileges)

So I chmod 777 /etc/samba/passdb.tdb and it still doesn't work.

I also added the signorseal patch to the XP box.

Am I missing something here? If need be, I'll post the smb.conf file.

Many Thanks!

RE: [Samba] Problems with lower and uppercase filenames

2002-09-30 Thread Wieprecht, Karen M.

I note some distinctions here:

The tools you had trouble with were NT tools, and the problem didn't exist
with all of them. NT is not case sensitive, and so developers of the
various tools and utilities probably handle character case differently. I'm
betting that it's the utility you are using that is deciding to make the
file name upper case (file copy, by default, calls the output "COPY OF
FOO.TXT" and probably doesn't try to preserve the case of the original file
name, notepad may also throw away any lower case letters ... Etc.) You
should try these same tests without going through the loopback to make sure
you understand what behavior is introduced by the utility itself .vs. what
might be getting introduced when you throw samba into the mix. If the
behavior is the same in both cases, I'd blame the NT utility, not the file
sharing method.

Subject: [Samba] Problems with lower and uppercase filenames

Hi, I just subscribed to this list to see if I can get a solution to the
following problem.
I've spent a couple of hours looking though the man pages, google, etc
but haven't found a solution.

Platform: RedHat 7.3 and Win98SE (in spanish)
Samba Version 2.2.3a

Ok, the problem is the following.

case 1:
Let's say I have a unix directory /temp shared through samba. I'm
sitting at my windows machine and I can create filenames
with upper/lowe/mixed cases and everything works fine

case 2:
There's a windows shared directory in my windows machine, let's call it
"MyWinShare"
I want to access it from unix so I do a mount -t smbfs -o username=joe
 //WINPUTER/MyWinShare /mnt/winputer/shareit

now from the unix shell prompt I can create files in my windows machine
with any kind of upper/lower case letters...

so far so good...

Now I create a samba share:
[whatever]
path=/mnt/winputer/shareit
browseable = yes
writable = yes
create mask = 0666
directory mask = 0777
preserve case=yes; added this one just in case

The problem starts now. When accessing this share from the Windows
computer I can see the shared directory (although through
an unnecesary "loopback" which is irrelevant to the problem because it
still happens with a different setup "without loops").
* If I drag and copy a file from the windows explorer, lets say
"foo.txt", the new file becomes "COPY OF FOO.TXT"
   All the characters in uppercase.
* If I move the file to another directory in the share, the case is kept.
* If I rename a file to fOooOo.tXt, the case is kept.
* If I use Notepad and save a new file in the share, it goes all to
UPPERCASE!!!
* If I use Wordpad, however, it respects the case...
* Other programs behave in different ways...

The main problem (and what started all this) is that my Java IDE has the
"all to uppercase" problem and if I edit a file and then save it, the
filename goes to UPPER which is very bad for a Java filename since
it's case sensitive.

So I read man smb.conf, man smbmount, etc... and saw parameters for
codepages and character sets, and started trying combinations (my windows is
in codepage 850 for DOS and codepage 1252 for windows, my
/usr/share/samba/codepages has an entry for 1251 but
not for 1252...)
Nothing new happens with all the codepage changes, the problem persists.

Notice that is not a problem of smb itself because other shares work
fine, nor of smbmount itself because from the unix prompt I can create files
in the windows machine with any case of letter. But smb+smbmount,
both together, give this phenomenon!!!

any ideas?? I hope this is not too confusing... it's 6:30am already
and I can't even type!

thanks

BarZ

1. Set the winbind use default domain parameter to yes
winbind use default domain = yes

2. The winbind separator
The docs show / and + as sample separators,
but + is special in NIS, and / is special in
UNIX. I used _ (underscore) as my winbind separator.

Buchan Milne passed on the use default domain tip (thanks!).
I found a NIS Reference buried in the smb.conf man page.
It only refers to the NIS group definitions, but the light went
off that NIS was probably being adversely affected by the
"+" winbind separator we were using. Changing it
to underscore fixed us up. Let me know if this does the job
for you as well.

Karen

How exactly do you do that? I've only managed to get winbind users when
using winbind. smbd would refer to the users in winbind regardless of the
users existance in other NSS databases.

2002-09-30 Thread David Brodbeck

I, too, have been successfully using winbindd, albeit in a smaller
environment. (~30 users) It's worked very well on our file server. I've
been using it since pre-2.2.2, I think.

More recently I started using it to authenticate ssh logins to one of our
machines, to avoid having to deal with multiple passwords for users. So far
it's worked well for that, too.

Even easier, I just created a password for one of the Samba users
(smbpasswd -a); then I am able to mount the directory using this password
as Samba falls back to the smbpasswd database when the DC is not available

> If this works, you have a firewall or user name problem.

no filtering rules active on either client or server; user name in domain
and on the fileserver are identical too

the messages logged by samba are similiar to those quoted below, apart
from the fact the fallback to passdb database succeeds in this case

Oddly, rpcclient setdriver doesn't seem to be run at all during the
process. I suspect this to be a bug in the version of cupsaddsmb.
I've run it manually, and I'll test when I get into the office today.
More later.

Yes, that is my next planned step. It's complicated somewhat by the fact
that our servers here run Debian stable, and the versions of Samba and
CUPS in that are both rather elderly...well, I'll try and see if that
fixes matters.

[Samba] problem with Samba in domain

2002-09-30 Thread Helge Bahmann

Hello!

I have a samba fileserver (Debian Woody, Samba 2.2.3a) that I am
trying to join into an NT domain (smbpasswd -j ...); the command says that
it joined the domain successfully.

Then I setup security=domain, workgroup name etc. as outlined in the samba
howtos. However whenever I try to access a share on the Samba server I am
prompted for a password (even though I already logged in through the
domain controller) and am subsequently denied access.

The logfiles on the fileserver contain the following on the failed mount
attempt:

[2002/09/26 18:53:28, 0] rpc_client/cli_netlogon.c:cli_net_req_chal(246)
  cli_net_req_chal: Error NT_STATUS_INVALID_COMPUTER_NAME

[2002/09/26 18:53:28, 0]
smbd/password.c:connect_to_domain_password_server(1336)
connect_to_domain_password_server: unable to setup the PDC credentials
to machine ADLER.INFORMATIK.TU-FREIBERG.DE. Error was : NT_STATUS_OK.
[2002/09/26 18:53:28, 0] smbd/password.c:domain_client_validate(1554)
domain_client_validate: Domain password server not available.
[2002/09/26 18:53:28, 0] passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:pdb_getsampwnam(1367)
  unable to open passdb database.
[2002/09/26 18:53:28, 0] passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:pdb_getsampwnam(1367)
  unable to open passdb database.

I don't know what to make of this -- does someone have any suggestion on
what went wrong? I am rather green on this.

Things that may be notable to our setup:
- Samba server and PDC live in different IP domains and different IP
subnets
- I had to manually insert the machine name of the PDC in the smb.conf
file; putting in "*" to let Samba find out the PDC on it's own results
in "Domain password server not available" message in the logfiles

Thanks for your patience.

Did you change the name ? This will cause a new domain SID to be
generated (either domain name or netbios name of the server). Best to
bring up the new server as a Samba BDC and set the domain sid using
smbpasswd -S.

Debian unstable is packaging Samba 3.0, and has been for a couple of

Thanks for your time!

You need Samba 3.0 on the PDC - I think we now have the right stuff in
there now.

The SNAP servers do RAP calls to the server, which until very recently
we didn't support. You might have better luck with Quantum's newer OS
(not sure what the deal is on upgrades), but it still requires Samba 3.0
on the DC.

Did you change the name ? This will cause a new domain SID to be
generated (either domain name or netbios name of the server). Best to
bring up the new server as a Samba BDC and set the domain sid using
smbpasswd -S.

That's definitely old. I would suggest trying 2.2.5 (or wait for 2.2.6).

This has to be the case for log messages written before the log file

I guess so.

You mean the *wrong* command

rpcclient localhost -N -U'root%pass' -c 'adddriver "Windows 4.0"
"printer_name:ADOBEPS4.DRV:printer_name.PPD:
NULL:ADOBEPS4.HLP:PSMON.DLL:RAW:
ADFONTS.MFM,DEFPRTR2.PPD,ICONLIB.DLL"

is sent for you instead of the *right* one

rpcclient localhost -N -U'root%pass' -c 'adddriver "Windows 4.0"
"printer_name:ADOBEPS4.DRV:printer_name.PPD:
NULL:ADOBEPS4.HLP:PSMON.DLL:RAW:
ADOBEPS4.DRV:
ADFONTS.MFM,DEFPRTR2.PPD,ICONLIB.DLL"

But this looks not like a Samba bug; it is rather "cupsaddsmb"
duing the wrong thing. "cupsaddsmb" is basing itself on "rpcclient"
and the sole responsible source for issuing the parameters which are
handed to "rpcclient".

Anyway, I am *not* seeing this with my last few versions of cupsaddsmb.
Likely, this is fixed *long* ago.

Which version of CUPS are you using (and which platform?) if you see
this?

Could you post this to the CUPS mailing list at www.cups.org, please,
if it still prevails after upgrading CUPS (or ripping off a "cupsaddsmb"
binary from a more current CUPS installation)?

I'm not sure what happe4ned to the --with-nis option either, but it seems

Hi there,

i'd like to use NIS (AIX based) to authenticate the samba-users (to
implement samba enterprise wide)

in "using samba" is an option which should be configured
(--with-nis) (NOT the --with-nisplus option)

now i got 2.2.5 (source) - but in "configure" this option is missing

Was this dropped in version 2.2.5 ?
Which was the last version that's able to work with NIS ?

Does anyone know how i can get this thing working ?

You shouldn't have domain logons enabled with winbind in 2.2.x.

Rather use pam_mkhomedir, and enable pam session support in smb.conf to
force samba to use pam_mkhomedir.

Install Mandrake 9.0 using a network install, you can join the domain
during installation. If you can't do a network install, you may need to
do some stuff manually. ACLs are supported on XFS and ext2/ext3 (but,
you must choose 'acl' as a mount option for them before it will work).

If you can't get 9.0, 8.2 with the Mandrake RPMs from ftp.samba.org will
get you about the same place as a non-network install of 9.0, except
only ACLs on XFS.

To get ACLs on RH7.x, you need to get the install ISO from SGI's XFS
site, or rebuild the kernel and samba yourselfwith acl support. I am not
sure about 8.0.

You will find some relevant files in either samba CVS or Mandrake CVS,
with examples for using pam_mkhomedir etc.

Some of this is covered in
http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/muo/connect/csamba5.html#winbind

I don't use samba on Redhat (removed it before I even got that far), but
quotas work in Mandrake, on XFS (8.2 and later, AFAICR) and ext2/ext3
out-the-box. (be aware that XFS takes a few seconds to update quotas).

Mandrake 9.0 has ACLs available on ext2/ext3/XFS out-the-box also, plus
the ability to join a windows domain (via winbind) during a network
install. If you can't do a network install, it's still pretty trivial.

AFAIK, samba should support any quotas the kernel supports, so you
should have quota support on Redhat, as long as the filesystems are
mounted with quota support.

This may or may not meet your needs - sorry for the wasted bandwidth if
it doesn't.

We needed a mechanism for our experimental LTSP lab to transparently
mount & unmount shares from a Win2000 server at login/logoff awhile
back. What we came up with is a set of shell scripts that do this
utilizing the capability of gdm to run pre & postsession scripts.
Unfortunately, at least at this time, you _do_ have to use gdm as your
display manager as I have not found a way to make kdm perform similar
functions. This does not tie you to the Gnome desktop - you can still
run, KDE, Ice, or whatever - but you have to use gdm to do it. The
scripts use two hidden files in your home directory, one to tell the
scripts what share to mount where, the other is a credentials file.
Putting the credentials in your home directory (hopefully) keeps them
more secure as opposed to putting them in fstab which is usually world
readable.

If you want to give them a spin you can get them at:

http://scnc.lsd.k12.mi.us/~mrambo

Just follow the linux link.

Hope this helps.

[Samba] Properties & File xfer slow over VPN

2002-09-30 Thread Philip Burrow

I'm running a couple of domains across a FreeSWAN VPN. I have one WINS
server which everything uses. Browsing works, etc. The only problem is that
file transfers are *incredibly* slow and it takes an age to bring up the
properties for anything. I appreciate this could be down to the link speed,
but the upstreams of all connections are 256k and are only lightly used,
with pings across the VPN being around 60ms, so I would expect around 15k/s.
I get more like 3k/s. FTP is fast, so I guess it's Samba. There appears to
be loads of network activity on the Windows (XP) clients I'm using to test.

I have this set on all of the Samba boxes:

socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_KEEPALIVE SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192

Should I just experiment with these options?

Phil.

[Samba] Successful integration using Winbind - not a dream

2002-09-30 Thread Robert W. Dempsey

Good Morning to All,

I have a Red Hat 7.3 box with Samba 2.2.5 successfully integrated
with a Windows 2000 domain. I am using a Win2K Domain Controller to
hold all of the user accounts. I use WebMin 1.0 for the administration
of my Linux box, and am able to pull up domain user accounts when
putting permissions on files on the RH machine. I used a combination of
resources to do this.

First, read the article located at
http://asia.cnet.com/itmanager/netadmin/0,39006400,39050042,00.htm. This
will show you what files to change. I also went onto the Win2K domain
controller did the following:

1. Start -> Programs -> Adminsitrative Tools -> Domain Security Policy
-> Windows Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options.
2. LAN Manager Authentication Level = Send LM & NTLM responses
3.  Start -> Run -> cmd
4. secedit refreshpolicy machine_policy
5. secedit refreshpolicy user_policy

After this, I rebooted the Win2K Domain Controller for good
measure, and I also rebooted the Linux server to ensure that all of my
services started in the proper order as this appears to definately have
something to do with it as well. I have only been able to get a RedHat
box to fully integrate, although I also have Mandrake 9.0 RC2 working
quite well for a client. If you all have any questions, please feel
free to respond and I will try to help you as best as I can. I will be
out for the day so I won't be able to respond until later (8-10 hours
from now). Good luck, and may Lnux light the way to the future for all
of us!

You are right, somehow this got lost in the Samba HOWTO Collection and
should be listed.

Are you saying there is no content in /WIN40/0/
at all?

> and it's certainly not trying to get the right file.
> Watching communications between the two machines with ethereal yielded
> no useful information.
> What's going on here?

I guess your "cupsaddsmb" command didn't work as intended. Try to run
it again. Use the "-v" parameter for verbose output. Are you seeing the
line

   "Printer Driver successfully installed."

*twice* (once for each architecture, W32X86 [=WinNT/2K/XP], and WIN40
[=Win9x]) ?

Are you seeing a line of

   "Succesfully set to driver ."

at the end?

If any of the "rpcclient adddriver|setdriver" commands fails (they are
printed by the "-v" output of cupsaddsmb), you can try to run them
manually from the console, with debuglevel increased ("-d 3" or "-d 5")
to troubleshoot this...

My final advice: Upgrade 2.2.3a to the latest 2.2.5 (with additional
print patches applied as to the advices on the website) or to 2.2.6 if
it is released

I've created a howto that follows the steps I've taking to setup a working
winbind setup.

You can find this howto at : http://www.sin.khk.be/~dj/

I welcome any feedback you all have on this howto to improve it and make
it usefull for the complete samba community.

Here you are wrong. It is your task to create the home directories
yourself. Winbind creates a second passwd and group file (sort of
speaking) and you can see the result of that with the getent command.

But the local things related to accounts (home dirs, quotas, ...) are not
done by winbind and therefore have to be done by you.

I've created a howto that explains a simular setup as your and includes a
way to auto create home dirs for users using pam.

You can find this howto at :

I can already comment that when using winbind you can best remove this
line since winbind will create the users. But see my howto for a full
smb.conf.

[Samba] Winbind question...

2002-09-30 Thread Jeremy Lahners

After reading the documentation and watching the traffic
on my new Samba server, I believe that in order for winbind to work
correctly, it needs to be constantly able to connect to the main W2K
server to retrieve password and username information.

  My question is:
If I cannot assure this constant connection
between the servers, is winbind my best solution for maintaining password
  and user synchronization?

  My situation:
I have two offices connected via a VPN which
allows all traffic to flow between the two offices. My main office
has a W2K server and I have set up my remote office with
Samba/Winbind.  The Internet connection is not extremely stable
between the offices.  Everytime the connection goes down, even
briefly, users at the remote office lose their connections to the server
and are not able to re-connect without rebooting their PCs.

  The ideal solution:
I would like to be able to set up winbind (or
another program) to check with the W2K server periodically for updates
only (maybe every day), otherwise I would like it to maintain the
usernames and passwords entirely on the Samba server and not require a
  connection to the W2K server.

  Relevant smb.conf info:
  # Global
  parameters[global]
  workgroup = SCHEMMER    netbios
  name = FS1_CB    security =
  DOMAIN    encrypt passwords =
  Yes    password server

      winbind uid =
  1-2    winbind gid =
  1-2    winbind
  separator = +    winbind cache
  time = 86400

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in
  advance!

[Samba] Win XP SP1 problem

Fresh install of Win XP, install SP1, then try and join a samba 2.2.5 PDC,
and get:

"Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error
has occurred:

The specified user does not exist."

I see no entries in my samba logs at all to say that my Win XP box was
attempting to join the domain. I can however get to shares via Network
Neighbourhood.

Anyone else experienced this problem?

When I use a fresh XP install without SP1, once I apply the plain text

make directories owned by a user who can't log in, group users, chmod
4770 (sticky bit set) and you're done

Where are the windows user and password?

Take a look at "man smbmount"

You would add

.., username=WindowsUser, password=WindowsPassword, ...

to the options, or better

..., credentials=FileName, ...

where the file FileName has the following content:
username = WindowsUser
password = WindowsPassword

[Samba] 2.2.5 and NIS question

2002-09-30 Thread ufo

Hi there,

i'd like to use NIS (AIX based) to authenticate the samba-users
(to implement samba enterprise wide)

in "using samba" is an option which should be configured
(--with-nis) (NOT the --with-nisplus option)

now i got 2.2.5 (source) - but in "configure" this option is missing

Was this dropped in version 2.2.5 ?
Which was the last version that's able to work with NIS ?

Does anyone know how i can get this thing working ?

[Samba] Samba 2.2.5 groups

2002-09-30 Thread Martin Hermanowski

Hi,

I just switched from TNG to 2.2.5. I had a group named `faxusers' with
TNG, and I am surprised that this list shows up in the `Security' Dialog
in Windows with the right name (after I doubled the gid). So it does not
work, but the group itself seems to be recognised correctly by Windows.

Is there probably a patch or something for 2.2.5 impleting the group
membership? No privileges or such, simply the membership of users?

Regards,
Martin
